Pulling a parachute for 300 miles!

- I got called for a long distance tractor swap after a truck broke down mid trip. Luckily the drover was able to get to a motel to sleep and reset his logbook time. So I headed to the customers yard to pick up a good truck to tow out to him and swap for the bad truck. In order to pull the truck forward I would have to remove the driveshaft, but since it was a good truck that was going straight to work I didn't want to do that. So I rear towed it instead, but that meant the fairings that are designed to be as efficient as possible through the wind in one direction, are creating a ton of drag and risk damage if I drive too fast without strapping them in place.
After the swap, I already had all the gear out and the @zackliftinternational4841 setup to rear tow, so I just towed the bad unit back the same way. All together it was a little over a 300 mile trip dragging that parachute without any issues.

interesting that you're bad mouthing people who were skeptical about the bungee straps -- and YOU'RE the one who lost the $700 light bar. If you're so sure about things why didn't you just leave bungee straps on it? Hey, that's how they designed it.
No, I bad mouthed the people who were D-bags about it. Maybe maybe try paying attention to what I said…
I have no problem with people seeing that and questioning it, not knowing that it’s the industry standard and is exactly how those light bars are designed to be attached to a truck.
The people I was bad mouthing are the assholes who said things like, “That’s what you deserve for using bungees.” Or, “How stupid do you have to be to think bungees would hold that.” And other things like that. So yes, I will bad mouth THOSE people all day long…. Because fuck those people.
@@CaseyLaDelle
Who IS this d-bag? Same guy everytime? Out of work driver? Competitor?
Casey was airing his thoughts on it ...
you are too critical and he did mention it was his mistake for the loss. Learn to read the ROOM.
Don't worry about it man hey we all make mistakes i, know i have it is about learning from them. Like you have done so, i see you've developed a system of checking and tracking everything good move stick with what works for you good luck "Hook in"
(see i did a thing) pun intended.
they pointed the douchebag arrow at themselves, by trying to belittle casey for "his" work as if they were the gatekeepers of whatever it is they think they do the best in the world lmao, they should put their effort towards being useful to society instead.
I appreciate the fact that you strive to do the safest, least-eventful recoveries possible. That's the goal, and one of the reasons why I subscribe to this channel - no fake drama - just real honest content.
Always pivoting your job around your girls! Great life choice!
Not sure why you demean yourself. You are much more skilled than 90% of the population.
This whole series featuring the acquisition of the Western Star and the Zaklift is excellent. What's really fun is watching you figure out all the small things you need to make it all easier to use and simplify your life.
Nicely done Casey. The worst dragging load I ever had was a 10,000 pound big crane boom. It was just a lot of pipes, a skeleton boom. As soon as I went over 45 MpH, it dragged like a 50,000 lbs. load just because of the wind turbulence around all those pipes.
Casey, some people might not have noticed this, but I did. That driver is really going to appreciate you remembering to take his dolly off his truck and strap it to the 2nd one. Great job!
I did no such thing
Interesting video and explanation about how towing one of those tractors backwards affects power and mileage. I learn things from your videos. And your hooking up with your family regularly shows that you are a really good guy.
Time is money. One way or another, you're gonna pay.😂
So make it easy on yourself and your equipment. Great job, Casey. Thanks for bringing us along.
And charge by the hour--not the mileage. Somebody needs to pay for alll that extra strpping/tying down, etc.
Only a hundred things to remember and check. Good job Casey.!. Glad to see you putting your new gear to work and making your business successful.
WELL SAID
Casey this is the Happiest I have seen you in quite awhile……Glad to see you’re back doing what you enjoy! Congratulations 🎉
Back when you only needed 10 hours off in a 24 hour period was a lot safer than this 10 hour all at once. We often drove a few hours and then rested a few hours then all over again without getting sleepy. Now driving 11 hours at once is much more dangerous. Love the videos. Nice truck for sure. I am building me and old POS just to help the neighbors out from time to time. The bungy cords when the light fell off were probably bouncing up and down pretty good hook on the strap where when hooked on something solid, they hold fine. I do like the method you are using now much better. good idea.
Great video Casey, not sure why people have to point out a mistakes made by a poster, "he who is without sin let them cast the first stone", in 71 years I've made my share, learned by them and moved on, it's part of life.
I'm just glad to be able to see you back in action, Casey. I totally understand the speed limit and hauling a parachute behind you - my RV is an older 30' DP that was designed during the fuel crisis, so 60 is its happy place, and driving a square box down the road needs everything in its favor 🙂
No dust on those tires, keep it rolling ,great video, thanks for bringing us along
I was one of those who mentioned the possibility of carabiners for your light bar and I'm glad to see it worked. It just seems more secure since the ends aren't open.
Great video because you also teach. Learning about the power factor and how just 5 mph makes a huge difference is something I learned in my older under-powered SUV. At 65-70 mph it loses 4 MPG compared to 60 mph, so your lesson applies to big rigs and little rigs, too.
I said I was ONE of those, not THE one. You're mistaken.@@bloodyeyeful
@@hotflashfoto Touche, Poor attempts at humor deleted. Blessings.
Oh too “BE THE ONE !” This social media dynamic is so cruel and hateful at times! Can’t we all be respectful and nice to each other? My Mother taught me years ago. If you can NOT say something nice, then do not say anything at all! What you think about multiplies, so avoid the negative hateful speech.
Huh??@@kenc1800
Great point out on the mpg 55 vs 60. The only thing you gain is about 10 minutes on a 2 hour trip lol Safer speed, better fuel economy and less DEF. Figured this out years ago in my super C Freightliner motorhome.
Casey You are a true Angel and you make the world a better place. Thank you for your hard work and efforts to share you life experiences. Peace be unto you. Keeep up the great work.
Not going to lie, when you, as a professional driver, mess up a gear change it makes me feel not so bad when I mess up mine! 😁
I'm perpetually on the search for 19th gear, looked for it several times.
@@jameslovitt994
LoL I've tried to find a 7th gear more times than I wand to remember, and some times that I forgot about having 6th gear.
Ahh, that illusive 7th gear! It's in there somewhere I'm sure.
I always wanted to drive a tow truck when i was younger. Life went a different direction but always thought it would be a good job to have. Now i just watch it on TH-cam.
Data point, most class 8 trucks are designed to pull the max load of 80,000 lbs at a max of 65 mph. For the optimal service life of tires, bearings and drive train. Slower speeds increase the service life of the components, while faster speeds exponentially decrease service life. The harder you hammer the GO pedal, the faster you will be buying fuel, tires, wheel bearings, u-joints etc. Wanna go fast, How much money you got !!! 😂 Love the channel and content, thank you Casey for sharing !!
Remember when towing another vehicle with smaller wheels, the smaller wheels are rotating faster than the tow rigs. I bet people have replaced more camper trailer wheel bearings than worn out tires.
Congrats on setting the proper priorities with the Girls.
Trucks aerodynamics certainly weren't meant to be pulled in the opposite direction from which they were designed to be operated. I drove OTR from 1988 to 2009 and during that time drove our wrecker to rescue our broken trucks. We always pulled trucks backwards so we wouldn't have to pull the axles out. The mirrors we always folded in so the wind wouldn't tear them apart and the side fairings we always strapped them together to keep them from ripping apart from the force of the wind. I always enjoyed doing our wrecker runs (we had a lot of them lol) we're based out of southwest Tennessee and I've done runs as far as Idaho and Arizona either bringing a truck to a broke down driver and bringing his truck back or dead heading to pick up either abandoned or broken down truck.
Folding the mirrors in is a risky move. It will prevent the covers from coming off, but if the wind catches them enough to fold them out at speed you will see some serious damage
I don't want to watch towing videos other than yours. The same with rock crawling other than with Trail Mater and Matt's off-road recovery. I like how you explain the process as you think it, like an unfiltered thought process. Not looking to impress us, just letting us know what you are thinking. "You never said you were good at this.", is a very humble and healthy way to approach life. The armchair quarterbacks throwing negative comments are just farts in the wind and they are gone soon, unless you put yourself downwind from them.
International, need I say more? Great content on fairings secured, lights, etc. 11hr driving, 19 hrs break, etc. Axel placement and secured truck.
Casey , Western Star turn signals and brake lights operate this way for the Canadian market . Remove the turn signal switch , remove cover plates . At the bottom of the turn signal switch you will clearly see a red jumper wire , cut it and your lights will properly operate . This operation will take 15 minutes .
Another great video and learning things from Casey! Good safe tow job!
Great job/video
It’s nice to watch your videos, nothing staged or scripted. I’m pretty sure you’re enjoying doing what you do and sharing with the viewers. Keep up the good work.
We always pulled them forward. It doesn't take that long to disconnect the driveshaft. Yeah I didn't like doing it but I like it better than the drag and swaying. We usually had to pull them further than you seem to. I used to work for a company that retrieved their own broken down trucks. Seemed like all of them broke down at least 600 plus miles away.
We use bungee cords also on our light bar
Casey does a very good job at his job. Very thorough. Towing big trucks is a very big responsibility.
Dude, you messed up! Everyone knows the purple bungees with carabiners are way better than the yellow ones! And all the carabiners need to be pointed north (unless you're in the southern hemisphere, where they have to be pointed east). Geeze, what a newb! Where'd you learn truck drivering? 🤣
Kidding of course. Another great video, Casey. I'm glad to see that truck and Zaklift earning their keep. Here's to much continued success. 👍
Here's an idea... Inflatable or foldaway wind deflector to take up that void in the back of that tractor rig fairing so it won't be a parachute shape--- turn it to an egg shape 😊
I am amazed with the number of people have a need to criticize. I thought of something, but I do not like criticizing people. You are doing a great job. I wish I could also.
Love your channel, awesome video. Stay safe out there! ❤️🙏
Its always about the family, tuats why we exist 😊
Nice job, Casey. Pointing out all the things you do is good for the viewers and it’s a documented record for the owner (and yourself) in case any mysterious damages happen after you unhook. The proof that you do things right is the best way to avoid a liability call…
All I think is your truck is freaking cool. Glad to see the new lights. Those are cool as well. Never thought magnet lights when I said take downs.
You are correct…the girls are importener! Well done Casey!
Good job Casey, keep up the good work.
You know since you picked up your new most Awesome Tool for your business you are much happier. The right tool can do that to a person, make them happy. As always thanks for sharing. Peace Out.
New truck is looking and working good for you!
Things are designed mainly to increase profit. The light bar was designed to eventually fall off so Casey has to get another one. They didn't take into account on Mark and his wife finding it. Thanks Mark!
I think it was because you backed into it with the take the pressure off the king pin idea. thats what makes the clamp lock sir, so thats why the lock wouldn't stay open! 😁
Casey you did a first class job. Great video.
Great to see carabiners on the light bar, those look a lot like the ones I have on key rings tho, hope you checked they have a decent rating and they are not the chinesium ones we get here
They look like harbor freight carabiners, and you definitely shouldn't climb with them, but they're plenty strong enough to make the bungee cords the weakest point of the setup
I had to laugh at the new descriptive word that you came up with. Thank you for sharing this talent with us😂😂😂😂!
what a great tow job Casey! the new tow truck setup sure is a beast. Glad is was a non eventful drive both ways with the parachutes.
Another Fine Harney County rescue by Casey Ladelle.... Nice job Casey!
New subscriber here. . Love the videos and the fact that they aren't exciting at all. . Just very factual and informative. . That's something missing from many TH-camrs !!!! Interesting observations on speed versus fuel consumption. .As a long time EV driver I know how 5mph can make a big difference to range even in something as powerful and aerodynamic as my Tesla Model S. Cruising at 70mph (UK) uses about 15% more electrons than doing 65mph. .Keep up the great vids.
So Wise , Thank You .. There is No substitute for Real Knowledge and experience
That's the perfect location to have work lights on the truck. Nobody you feel like you will blind. It's always better to have them and use your brain to determine if you will bother others. Put a switch on them and be selective.
Regarding the bungie cords, I think when a few of those folks said "as soon as I saw the bungie cords" they probably meant "as soon as I saw how you installed the bungie cords". That was just not enough tension. I don't think the strap had as much to do with it. The whole thing was just too loose, loose enough that the light bar could bounce up and down far enough to create slack in the cords and let them come loose.
When applying things with bungie cords they have to be very taut. You want it so that no matter which way you tug on the thing that you've got tied down, it can't move enough to create any slack on any of the cords. If it does, the hooks can and will come loose. This is why the cloth weave-wrapped cords are "better", because they have a hard stop on the length. So when you apply them, you want to pull them to their maximum extension, and it's safe to do that because their length is limited by the cloth weave. Also, the cloth weave limits the amount that the load can move against each cord, which means that if you're up against the length limit on all the cords there's not enough movement possible to come loose.
Anyways, great video and thanks for sharing with us. Big respect for showing your mistakes and owning them. Some things we only learn from experience, but at least it can be someone else's experience. 😂
Another "class" on how he does things ... like that song goes ... the good, the bad and the ugly !!
6.4 mpg? Geez I get 8 - 9 mpg in my 89 F250 w/ 460. And that is a Canadian gallon, just for reference 6.4/US gallon = 7.7/Ca gallon. As usual, another entertaining video.
I have two phones... Last week I had to back up to a trailer by myself. Opened a FaceTime connection and set one of my phones on the back bumper, other one on the dash. It worked great except right is left and left is right.
I keep my ratchet straps lubed up with dry lube. It helps alot toward them freezing up ans sticking. In winter i coat the ratchet parts with a wet lube. It helps keep ice out of the gearing
14:00 Casey hollering stop in the background made me literally lol😂
One reason the mileage varies so quickly relates to the Bernoulli factor. The functions like lift and drag are result of speed computations to the power of 4. e.g. 5, 25, 125, 625 . Increase speed by 5 and see a 625 times increase in drag factors.
Well, did you get your strap that was holding the king pin lock so you could move the truck? Asking for a friend, Of course he did, just didn’t film it, silly me.
i think this was a great video. keep making them.
I did not know that U Bolt cup make life a bit better why not

It’s been nothing but awesome so far!
@@CaseyLaDelle long may it continue!! Keep up the good work.
Great tow
I would have to have a strap check list. Lots of stuff to forget.😅😅😅
It’s all that wonderful computerized semi stuff. It’s so you don’t blind somebody going down to road. They make sounds if you get out of your lane or if they didn’t paint the lines. Don’t open the door with it in gear or the parking brake released because it makes all kinds of noise and the horn blasts. Companies lock them in economy mode so it takes miles to get up to speed. And there’s more crap coming every year. It’s like driving a video game. I’m retiring again at the end of March or sooner.
Casey one of the worse loads I moved was a 20 can at the rear to dock unload. It waa a drag with ruffles. 😮😮😊😊
I drive a 50ton wrecker built by Miller and I've never had a job i enjoy more
Hey just a thought maybe use some masking/painters tape on mirrors and whatever else u need to take you can wrap it two or three times if need be but that will come right off when your finished and leave no residue!
I feel ya Casey, atleast its not snowing!! Gonna be 25° tonite and maybe some flurries in MN.
I am one of those people who tried to tell you that the bungees on the light bar wouldn't hold it on, but I must not have said it loud enough since you didn't hear me. The strap just has too much vertical movement to rely on the bungees to not come unhooked. Also, throw one of those Apple Air Tags or something similar in the light bar itself to find it when it goes astray.
No air tags, please . Why expand the spy network?!
I've yet to see Casey take anyone's advice.
Good job
Nice job on the tow Casey!!
You are a good man, Casey LaDelle, girls first!
OUCH, now I feel like I am a DUMMY. WE know different. LOVE this channel, drive on.
No Tape for mirror, try 6 inch wrapping plastic, easy remove ...
It would probably need some tape on the end of the plastic to keep it from unraveling, but that's easy to remove.
Saran wrap
I was laughing at Casey yelling at the truck for constantly beeping, turning itself off, etc. My new company truck (Cascadia) does all kinds of stupid stuff like that and I’m always yelling at it.
Great idea changing the cheep hooks on your light bar. If anyone thinks you are stupid for doing it, just point out that light bar stays where you hang it. Perhaps they are the ones that have a problem.
Frog tape is what you want to use. It will never leave residue, if you use the orange 2in tape it’s the same as duct tape but residue free. We use it for high end paint masking
I have use bungee cords for 20 years and never had a problem. You have to change them or once a while when they are cracked but that’s it .
"Those clamps on the fairing have little rubber pads so the don't scratch the paint." I get a kick out of how you have to explain all these little details so the internet trolls don't give you shit!😀
I agree. It would be better on their garden, if they have one.
@@judithburke1539 ??!
Middle of no where is 5 plus days away from home in aus for a truck driver or a towey enjoy 😊😊
Hey Casey. l really hope you didn't take my comments about bungy straps from the previous video the wrong way. l learned the hard and expensive way so l just thought l'd share my experiences so that others wouldn't make the same mistake. l really value how you talk about your experiences and take the time to explain things to us amateurs.
Moving on. Great example of fuel saving with your 55 vs 60 experiment. That's nearly 20% fuel saving !! lt would be really interesting to hear how much longer the trip took. While l get that time is money, the money saved on fuel by driving that little bit slower probably beats the extra truck/labor time.
lf possible, the next time you tow a truck like that it would be great to see the difference if it was towed forward rather than backwards.
I charge by the hour, so time definitely is money!
I watched the video of you loosing the light bar. My first gut feeling was that it was stolen.
Ice cream has to be in a freezer at a minimum-10, when I hauled baskin robbins our trailers were set to -20.
I say that fifth wheel needs servicing great video
Gotta find time to wash that seat belt 😂. Thanks for you videos!
I love watching your videos and the comments that you say to the people that don't have a clue I think that is absolutely hilarious I drive truck myself and then he got the pencil pushers that think they know and they don't know Jack
Gaffers tape comes off easy, looks like duct tape but meant to be removed it was designed to hold wires down for staging concerts etc
Good morning Casey
As far as the bungie cord issue in your last vid, the only reason it failed is because your top bungies were connected to a single strap, so the hooks were able to slide to the center where they would have lost all tension. The only way I could think to fix that would be to tie a knot in the strap for the bungie to hook into so that they couldn't slide. Hindsight being 20/20 and all that.
Given the price of those light bars I'm surprised they don't have some type of warning for the driver if they fall off
On the Volvo the 5th wheel plate release has a notch that catches. You have to pull it out and a little forward to make it catch and stay released.
Funny, 9 minutes in I was thinking the same thing the guy thought, it's gonna fall off. Difference is I have owned a towing company for 34 years and that's long enough to know just because that's how "the industry" does it doesn't mean it's right.
Casey, I used to deliver new trucks from the Volvo factory in Dublin Va. to the lower 48 and 5 provinces of Canada. I would pull 2 trucks stacked forward and one facing backwards from Virginia to Yakima Washington. Easy peasey. Pulling trucks backwards long distances happens every day, all day.
Like you said… “New trucks”
@CaseyLaDelle I wasn't dissing what you did. I had to prep the trucks just like you did. Just saying it happens all the time. Great video!

I didn't get a good enough look at the fifth wheel but the place i work at has an international thats relatively the same and with its fifth wheel when i unhook I use the pin puller, hook it from the bottom and pull out and up, there is a piece of steel that sticks up on the bar of the handle and that catches and locks it in place. Kind of irrelevant now but in the future it might help.
newer trucks are set up to turn off work light if truck move because to many driver was leaven them on going down the road but I am like you I like it to stay on until I get done working then I well turn it off
