    Thanks to everyone for supporting us through the production of our "Rediscovering Mystery" series. It was wonderful to take the time to dive into The Witness, Spelunky, and Frog Fractions 1 & 2. We hope you enjoyed them. For those who don't know yet, our next AAA project is (*drum roll*) FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. We just returned from a week long shoot in Tokyo and are working hard to get that finished for early June. In the meantime, we'll have a bunch of interesting smaller clips we filmed at GDC last month (also Danny is going on his honeymoon and is looking forward to not staring at Adobe Premiere for a few weeks). We'll have plenty more behind the scenes stuff up for patrons too. Thank you all for helping us reach 100k subscribers only six months after we started this channel. We're absolutely stunned and humbled by your viewership. We have some incredibly exciting projects coming for the next six months, so we hope you stick around. - Danny & Jeremy

      Enjoy your time off - it's much deserved with the truly high quality of these documentaries!
      If there's ever the opportunity open, you guys should try to do some docs on older games as members on the team are available - like 80s-early 00s - would be really cool to see an in-depth look back with some new interviews and insights to really popular and more obscure games that may have been forgotten. (btw, would love to see a Falcom doc sometime in the far flung future :) )

    I remember my brother buying Spelunky on the Playstation store and I was kind of critical of him saying there were plenty of AAA/big titles to buy, but I ended up playing it. I liked the game enough, but I couldn't get through the mines initially. I kept trying, and kept learning the game. Eventually I honed in on the skills/knowledge to get to, and ultimately through, Hell. The further I got, the more I appreciated the secrets and thoughtfulness that went into the game. Not much in gaming matches the satisfaction of emerging victorious from the other side of Hell in Spelunky! Now I consider it in the top 10 games I've ever played. It's so fun, and has so much replay value, and you never know what will happen on any given run. Anyone watching this who hasn't played it, it's a must.

    • @JG_Wentworth
      @JG_Wentworth 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GameArts1 That's honestly why I've started torrenting games that I'm unsure of in terms of my enjoyment with them. Sometimes it takes more than a couple of hours of gameplay to know how a game sits with you, and when you're strapped for cash like me, it's hard to make decisions based entirely off of other peoples experiences with games. I don't want to spend money on a game I'd ultimately want a refund for, and then not be able to get my money back because I wanted to give the game a fair chance.
      Spelunky 2 was one of the games I did pay for though. Not only does it offer more than plenty of value for its relatively low price point, but everything about the way the game feels just made me instantly want to delete that copy and go support the developers in the most direct way possible. And I did! It's honestly the pinnacle of platforming controls in my opinion, the controls are responsive, tight, and the game expands on your movement in a lot of ways that have a lot of depth. Along with that, while I've never experienced it, online play with this game looks to be quite enjoyable, and the humor of the game boosts exponentially when playing with other people, both new and experienced.
      While I won't do anything so rash as to encourage you to get into torrenting specifically for this game, maybe try and find someone who does have the game and ask them what makes the game stand out to them, or even ask them if you could try a couple of runs with them on steam remote play, I believe you can do that without needing a copy of the game yourself. Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are really both great examples of lighting in a bottle, with Spelunky 2 harvesting what made the first game special and forming an even stronger game with that foundation. It really is quite amazing what these games have accomplished, and I can't wait to see what he does next with his future titles.

I kind of sucked and couldent get past the jungle world (400m-800m.) But it was still so fun trying to get better learning, the patterns of the game. P.S. a game where you kill video game programmers was made a while ago by choice. I think it was a Nitrom game but it was so dang cool and reallyyy fun (Nitrom created really fun short games like bad ice cream 1, 2, 3, and 4.) But I forgot the name it was like kill all I think programmers, it starts with kill all though it was a good short game I really enjoyed oddly enoughed😂. Absolutely love Spelunky. I could play it for hours and never get bored. I don't really follow the Indie scene so it was great to watch the 3 guys who created the game talk about it passionately.

    I’m only 12 and I beat both games at 10 and know everything about the 2 games. 😊Almost about to pull off a hell run. 🎉❤ Some people my age just think, if it’s not Fortnite, or popular, it’s not fun. Which I know to most of you that sounds stupid. But you’d be surprised. 😮 The games were super important to my childhood because it bring me hours of joy. ⏰ Thank you Derek for one of my favourite games of all time. ❤ P.s if you are reading this (Which let’s face it, there is a super low chance of him seeing this,) I have a idea, maybe in the next year or two, maybe could you and you’re crew make Spelunky 3? I have been waiting for years to find someone in real life who knew what The Spelunky series was. One day. 🙏 P.S.S Thank you guys for reading all this, and make sure to have a great day❤😊.

    I want to be an indie developer, this documentary was very inspiring. After I watched this video a chain of events, two days in the making unfolded and a bunch of stupid bullshit splashed up into my face. If I hadn't watched this, and had my mood uplifted, my day would be so fucking depressing, the kind that shadows you for weeks and makes you question everything. Thanks for making my day Noclip and developers of Spelunky, I haven't played the game yet but this was still very inspiring to watch, I'm definitely going to pick it up soon. And I just discovered this channel after seeing the Bethesda and Fallout 76 documentaries, when pay day comes around Im becoming a patreon for sure.

    It kind of floors me that he feels the Ice Caves are a break. The abyss always stresses me out so much more than the levels you can’t fall down the bottom of.

    • @JG_Wentworth
      @JG_Wentworth 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, you can take things a lot slower in the ice caves because theres not a constant barrage of enemies around you at all times. The biggest threat is probably the aliens, not because of their attack, but because of how unpredictable their ship is when you try to destroy it. You're a lot better off just avoiding them and continuing to take the caves slow, looking down often to see what's below you and where you can jump.

      Has one problem, like the classic sonic games, you can walk into traps that are impossible to see until it's too late due to the screen size.
      That rarely happens though, and really only with the dart traps in the mines. Thats the only issue for me.

    First, excellent documentary! Thanks Noclip people! I've been meaning to watch this for a while and just got around to it now.
    But - WTF??? There's a Worm level in Spelunky???
    I've played 10s of hours of the game, and watched and read so much more about the game. From all the stuff BananaSaurus Rex did, to all of the secret runs, to the Solo Eggplant run, to many speed runs, and on and on. Yet still I'd never heard of the Worm level. I can't believe I'm still learning more about this game.

    Wasn't there another / second video about Derek Yu where he talks a bit more in-depth about his clickNplay days and gamejams and all that stuff? I thought it was also a NoClip video but I can't find it for the life of me. Did it get removed? It was really inspiring and would like to see it again tbh.

    Man, I didn't know Derek Yu did Aquaria. I got it when it was new and have loved it ever since. Hearing him be a little down on it makes me sad. I've always kind of hoped for a sequel. I love me some Spelunky, but I really, REALLY loved Aquaria. It was beautiful, unique, somber, had fantastic music, was one of the first "real" Indie games I played that truly impressed me.
