These places are (almost) as good as Chiang Mai, especially during its infamous "burning season".

In the videos so far, I talked about the things I felt while living in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Chiang Mai is a great place for digital nomads to work remotely because of its low living costs. Also the weather is relatively cool and there are many coworking offices with good Internet access. It is convenient to rent a scooter, and there are convenience facilities such as condos, markets, and general hospitals within 10 minutes by motorbike. The level of the service industry is high, so there are many cafes with good coffee and many delicious restaurants. Chiang Mai is also well known as a golf destination. In Chiang Mai, there are many resort-type golf courses with hotels and golf courses.
Today, I will talk about cities other than Chiang Mai where I stayed while living as a digital nomad. Bali is an island in Indonesia that is three times the size of Jeju Island. The shape of the island also resembles a woman, similar to the island of Maui in Hawaii.
Tourists mainly look for resorts, hotels, and pool villas in the Denpasar area near the airport. Ubud is about an hour's drive inland. Because the price is cheap, there are many people who come to do yoga. These so-called yogis practice at yoga studios such as The Yoga Barn. Other than that, there are many people who come for workation or long-term stay. It was closed due to COVID-19, but there was also a cool coworking space called Hubud(Hub in Ubud).
Chiang Mai and Ubud have many similarities. Bali has so many Hindu temples that it is called the ‘island of the gods’. The Besaki Temple is also called the mother temple, but it is a place like a Hindu holy place where more than 30 temples are gathered. There are Hindu temples everywhere in Ubud, and it feels similar to the many Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai. And also, like Chiang Mai, there is a culture of sharing called ‘canang sari’.
There are similarities between the two people. Even now, the people of Chiang Mai have a perception that they are descendants of the Lanna kingdom, and Bali was also an independent kingdom in the past. And they have an exclusive character, such as using Balinese among themselves. And Bali has an artistic personality that it has its own painting style. It is said that European artists stayed in Bali from the days of Dutch colonial rule, and the ‘Ubud style’ was created by combining Balinese traditional paintings and Western paintings. There is also a place called ‘Art Market’ in Ubud. You can do shopping for souvenirs, but surprisingly, art paintings are also sold. There are many art museums and galleries dotted around the streets, the most famous being Neka Art Museum, Puri Lukisan Art Museum, and Agong Rai Gallery.
In Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam, I had a different impression. Perhaps because of the influence of socialism, which does not recognize religion, although it has a long history, it does not have a strong religious color.
Still, HCMC has always been a satisfying place. Thanks to the Mekong Delta created by the Mekong River flowing down from the Tibetan Plateau, they enjoyed abundance, but competition (between Khmer, Champa, and France) to occupy this place was also fierce. Although Hanoi became the capital after the Vietnam War, the economic center remains Ho Chi Minh City. Korean companies are actively advancing into the city, so there is a factory of Samsung, and recently, construction companies such as Lotte and GS are developing real estate projects such as eco smart city thủ thiêm and apartments in metrocity nhà bè.
I got the impression that Taiwan's Tainan has a similar historical background and religious atmosphere to Chiang Mai or Ubud. Taiwan has Taipei, Taichung, and Tainan along the coast, and before Taipei became the capital, the island's center was Tainan. Tainan is a place where the Dutch built Fort Zeelandia, but later, Zheng Chenggong(Koxinga) occupied it and established the 'Kingdom of Tungning'. There is also a Temple of Confucius, and there are many shrines and temples dedicated to the local god Mazu. Tainan also has a university named after Zheng Chenggong(National Cheng Kung University, 國立成功大學), which is a top-tier university in Taiwan. If you go to places like Anping old street, you can see historical traces from the Netherlands, Japan, and China here and there. In Taiwan, the cost of living is low and the GDP(PPP) is high, so food costs are cheaper than in Korea. It is also attractive that airfare is cheap because it is close to Korea, and there are many cheap and delicious street foods.
The cities I talked about today have their own pros and cons. Therefore, rather than finding the perfect city, finding the charm of each would be the way to enjoy cities.
