- The cost of living is one of the most important, if not the most, considerations when deciding where to stay for a long term in foreign countries as a digital nomad. Nomad List is a website that digital nomads often use to find a place for “workation” or remote work, and Chiang Mai is often ranked as the best city on the website. It may be because the cost of living is lower than neighboring cities such as Bangkok, Yangon, and Pai. Pai is a small village located 3 hours from Chiang Mai by bus, and is popular with people visiting northern Thailand for trekking or road trips. Chiang Mai is a bigger city than Pai, but the cost of living is lower.
I’ve had a few long-term stays in Chiang Mai, and I think everything in Chiang Mai is cheap and Chiang Mai people are known to be less scammy. You hardly get to hear rip-off tales.
In the last video, I introduced the attractions of Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand and has universities and big modern hospitals, and was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. The weather was relatively cool, and there were many shared offices with fast internet, so it was a good place to stay while working remotely. It is convenient to rent a scooter, and there are convenient facilities such as condos, markets, and general hospitals within 10 minutes by motorbike. And there are many cafes with good coffee. You can get a massage at the Chiang Mai Night Market near Chiang Mai University or at the Sunday Market outside the Old City, which is also an indispensable advantage.
Because many native English speakers, such as retired immigrants, are staying here, there are shopping malls, and gyms where you can communicate in English, as well as yoga and cooking classes conducted in English.
There are also many schools and language courses for foreigners. International schools such as CMIS (Chiang Mai International School), Prem, APIS (American Pacific International School), NIS (Nakornpayap International School), and LANNA (LANNA international school) have the advantage that classes are conducted in English and Thai. There are also many Korean students attending the schools.
There is a Thai language school in Chiang Mai, so there are students who come for language training. Language schools include LICMU (Language Institute CMU) operated by Thailand's top tier university, Chiang Mai University (CMU), YMCA Language School Chiang Mai, and NES School of Languages.
For Koreans, Chiang Mai is well known as a destination for golf holidays. In Chiang Mai, there are many resort-type golf courses with hotels and golf courses. The advantages are that the courses are of high quality, both rounding and sightseeing are possible, and fees are cheap. In particular, in winter, many golfers visit Chiang Mai to avoid the cold, so travel agencies make golf tour packages and direct air routes are also operated.
Today, we will talk about cheap prices and living expenses, which are big advantages of staying in Chiang Mai.
When I went to Chiang Mai for the first time, I practiced some survival phrases in Thai such as ‘how to read numbers’ and ‘how much is it’ because I was worried that I might be overcharged. However, I realized people don’t rip you off even without using those phrases.
Also, I got the impression that part of the reason why the people are so chill is due to their religion (Buddhism). Unless you're in a touristy area like Old City or Nimman, restaurants are often closed, and many are only open for breakfast or lunch and then close early.
Chiang Mai is the center of Northern Thailand travel. There are many famous mountains around Chiang Mai, such as Doi Inthanon and Doi Sustep. Doi Inthanon is a national park north of Chiang Mai with the highest mountain in Thailand (2,565m above sea level), and it is the end of a range of mountains that extends from the Himalayas. Doi Suthep is a place where there is Phra That Doi Suthep, a temple where Buddha's relics are enshrined, and is famous for its beautiful view and natural environment. Like these places, there are many trekking courses nearby, so many travelers come to enjoy activities in nature.
These tourists are active in price comparison in search of cost-effective products to save travel expenses, which will also be the reason why prices in Chiang Mai are not high.
Lastly, the lower numerical unit of Thai baht can be another reason why the prices are kept low.

욕심 많이 없습니다. 관광객 보다는 토박이 대상 가게들이 주류입니다.
치앙마이에서 13년 거주한 경험입니다.
치앙마이 거주자 입니다. 전 치앙마이가 태국의 다른 도시보다 물가가 저렴하다고 느낀 적이 별로 없네요. 공산품 같은 경우 방콕이 더 저렴하다고 느낀 적이 많습니다. 바가지 요금이 상대적으로 적어서 여행자들은 그렇게 느낄지도 모르겠습니다. 실제로 치앙마이에 치앙마이 사람들은(치앙마이가 고향인 사람들) 별로 많지 않다고 알고 있어요.^^;;
외국에 살고 있으며 몇년후 노후생활을 치앙마이에서 보낼 계획을 조금씩 하고 있는 59세 남자입니다.
지금까지 치앙마이관련 유툽 영상을 많이 봤지만
학문적 관점에서 바라본 영상이라 많이 신선했습니다.

1990년대 치암마이 게스트하우스 건설 붐이 일었는데
그 당시 태국 방문객이 연간 3백만명도 안되는 시기였음.
당시 카오산로드 제일 싼 욕실없는 싱글룸 70바트 정도 했는데
치앙마이는 럭셔리 신축 더불룸이 50바트였음.
당시 코팡간 방갈로 40바트
코사무이는 50바트부터
코피피는 80바트
크라비 라이웨이는 70바트
당시 1달러 750원으로 1바트 30원이었음. 하루 5천원으로 잘먹고 잘 지내던 좋은 시기였음

다녀온지 2일됬는데 바가지가없다?.. 잘 모르겠네요 그닥 싼것도 못느꼈고 로컬음식 싼만큼 양적고 싼마이 입니다ㅎㅎ하나좋은거 배달료가 400~500원수준이라 그거하나는 좋았네요 ㅎㅎ 맥날 스벅같은거 더 비싼느낌도 들구요 낮에는 40도넘게 올라가서 사람들 다니지도 않고 다 쇼핑몰에 모여있으며 미세먼지 심하고 .. 저녁에 좀 선선해지면 나오는데 야시장도 생각보다 작고 물건들도 다 비슷비슷해서 그닥 구경하는 재미도없었구요 ..가격도 제값합니다 ㅎㅎ 솔직히 방콕은 안가봐서 모르겠지만 치앙마이가 이정도로 찬양받을만한가 싶었습니다 ㅋㅋ 2주 계획했다가 비행기표 변경해서 일주일만에 들어왔네요 ㄷㄷ

치앙마이 다녀 왔는데 정말 좋았다 ^ ^ 나도 치앙마이에서 평생을 살 생각 중이다 , , ,한국의 미친 물가 살면 살 수록 적자인생이다
우리나라도 텃새가 심한동네는 먹고 살기 힘든 동네고 바다가가 특히 힘함
살만한동네는 인상부터 여유롭네요 텃새도 없고

방콕에서 20키로만 나와서 빠리몬톤(수도권)만 가도 바가지 거의 없고 매우 저렴합니다.아침에 도시락 25밧(950원)정도면 사먹을수 있어요
유흥거리 많고 외국인 많은 태국 중부,남부는 관광지는 현지인도 가기 꺼려 합니다
파탸야 이런곳은 손님으로 태국인이 들어가면 표정이 영 좋지 않아요 ㅋㅋ
하지만 북부의 치앙마이는 확실히 관광지 치고는 다른 곳 보다는 저렴하고 깨끗한것이 때가 덜묻은 느낌이 있더 라구요
같이간 태국인들은 치앙마이가 촌나봇(시골)이고 발전이 더뎌 아직 물가가 저렴하다고 생각들 하구요
미래에 어찌 될지는 모르겠지만 현재는 확실히 다른 광관지 보다 호객이나 더러운것 안보고 심심하지만 느긋하게 즐길수 있는 곳이라 생각합니다.
치앙마이 10여년 살면서 문득 궁금하긴 했는데 이렇게 정리한 내용 보니 수긍이 가네요. 좋은 영상 감사합니다.

란나왕국의 수도였던 곳이라는 역사적 자부심 때문인지, 삶의 질이 높아서 그런지, 치앙마이 시민들은 방콕을 선망의 눈으로 보는 게 아니고 낮춰(?) 보기도 하더군요.

First of all, I have to say, on behalf of all CM people, thank you for appreciation.Anyway for you and any forigners reading my comment, please don't expect too much from us. TH and also CM is just a small and humble country. We have both good and bad things (for exmaple haze air pollution which some comments in your vid stated) That include people. Expecting anything too much ususally leads to disappointment when thing doesn't turn out to be as good as we expected although it might be OK in in own way.
You are right that Thai language (both central Thai and northern Thai) derived many words from Chinese. (For Koreans who don't know, we have 4 sub-languages. Most are familiar with central Thai which is official language, but there are 3 more: northern, northeastern, and southern. All are in Tai-Kadai family. Just different in tone and some words)
For those who want to do long stay in CM, be welcome. Some comments asked about the haze. My suggestion is do what the long-stay Japanese (which are lots) do. They fly back to JP during the hazing season -- about 3-4 mths -- then come back after the situation is OK.
What really interesting is the way you analyze why (I would say most) CM locals would not rip-off. It has been discuss among us Thai and foreigners for decades. Some suggest the same theory in your vid -- abuandant food -- for the reason why Thai (not just CM locals) tend to laid back esp. compare to Far East Asian. I would not say which one is true but I would suggest one of the an explanation I've read. Unlike most Far East Asian including Korea which has confucianism in their work ethic -- everybody has duty and role in a society from the biggest like country to company to family-- , Thai don't appreciate those who work too hard and dedicate all of his life to the company like the Karoshi culture in Japan, Thai ethics of work tends to be more work-balance. They believe that work have to go with relaxation in life. Of cause they appreciate those who work hard very much, but if you are one of them and have Thai friends, they would praise you but they would also tell you to relax -- to give time to those around you -- your family, wife, childern. They would tell you to take some break and find time to enjoy other aspect of life. To go abroad. They would tell you that you cannot take any of the money you earn to your death (religious, eh?) A comment I've read from a westerner who work with Thai said that you can expect Thai to work nonstop for a week, but they would not do that for months or years. They would find time of their own after that week or month long project end to take their day-off. They would go aboard, travel to other places, enjoy they free time with those they love -- friends, family, etc. And this is true from my observation and experience. more true to citys outside BKK, not just CM (where most Thai sometime nicknamed "Artist city" Think about artists. They tends to be more sensitive to other aspects of life besides materials) This might be one of the reason why our work ethic is different from you -- they way we view work. I would not say which one is better since all have their own advantages and disadvantages. Just suggest another point of view. Sorry for any typo. I do them all the time. Have a good day.
I’m so grateful for your comments with a lot of insights sprinkled here and there. =) Yes. Low expectation prevents disappointment but it also prevents people from visiting CM. I feel CM offers what many Koreans seek but can’t find elsewhere. And I realized (after publishing this video) that so many Koreans have fond memories of CM so any love or respect from Koreans about CM and you people is well deserved.
About the Karoshi culture. Korea is no less known for hard work but it’s not because we don't know how to relax or balance life and work. We have our own reasons to work to the fullest (e.g. rising housing prices, the cost of educating your kids and everything) and we Koreans believe(at least used to believe) we can advance our life through hard work and integrity. So it may not be about how we ‘view’ our work but about the economic reality we face and being responsible, willing to stand on our own feet. And I guess it is one of the reasons why some(I would say most) Koreans find the atmosphere of CM so relaxing and even enlightening. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. A lot learnt.

10여년간 태국은 치앙마이만 오고간 사람입니다. 제가 바다를 싫어해서 그런것도 있지만. 10여년전에는 거지도 없었어요. 저도 널려있는 바나나를 보고 굶어죽진 않겠네, 얼어죽진 않겠네, 했는데 이번에 와서 몇달 머무니 너무 많은 부랑자를 보고 놀랐어요. 치앙마이의 낮은 물가는 낮은 인건비에 기인한 것으로 생각됩니다. 10년전에 비하여 한국의 인건비는 대폭 상승하고 물가인상도 엄청났지만, 이곳 치앙마이는 제가 10년전에 6천밧에 얻었던 원룸은 지금에서야 7천밧으로 올랐고, 저는 주변에 같은 6천밧에 훨씬 넓고 쾌적한 곳을 구해서 지냈습니다. 10년전에 30밧을 내고 먹었던 볶음밥은 40밧, 20밧짜리 과일주스는 25밧 30밧, 물가가 올랐다는데 10년전이랑 비교하면 글쎄 오른건가 싶을 정도였어요. 다만 10년전에는 바트가 32원~34원, 지금은 38원, 체감상 원화로는 20퍼센트 이상 물가 인상을 체감하게 된거죠. 그만큼 이 곳 치앙마이에서는 때돈 벌기 힘들고, 간간히 하루 벌어 먹고사는 사람들 뿐이라는 생각이 많이 듭니다. 줄서는 까오소이집. 3, 40밧 까오소이 팔아서 줄까지 세워서 팔지만 한달에 얼마 벌까요? 마트에서 60밧하는 창 비어, 7~80밧에 파는 술집, 과연 얼마나 남을까, 참 생각하면 갑갑하고 여행자입장에서는 이 낮은 물가를 유지하기 위한 그들의 희생처럼 보이고, 또한 현지인들에게는 어쩌면 낮은 급여에 매일 술먹고 밥먹고 월세 내고 정말 어떻게 살지? 생각도 해봤어요. 대학 졸업하고 직장생활 10년차 급여가 12000밧, 711, 파트타이머 월급 9천밧, 특히 12천밧 던 30대중반의 그 처자는 한국 농장에서 일해서 돈벌고 싶다고 저한테도 말하던데, 뭐 제가 도울 수 도 없고요. 여기 있다보면 한국에서 돈 벌다 온 태국인도 많은 것 같아요. 물론 그들의 합법 비자로 일했는지 관광갔다가 몇년 일하다 온건지는 알 수 없지만. 치앙마이 저도 너무 좋아하고 사랑하는 곳이지만. 모든게 아름답지만은 않더라고요. 몇해전 러이 끄라통에 소매치기들이 기승을 부린 적이 있는데, 치앙마이 사람들은 그 것을 외지인들의 범죄라고 생각하더군요. 그만큼 스스로에 대한 믿음도 대단한것 같고요. 저도 그래서 치앙마이 좋아합니다. 한국은 안전하자만 그 안전이 수많은 cctv와 블랙박스와 경찰력의 도움이 필요하지만 치앙마이는 그 흔한 cctv도 없고 블박 단 차도 거의 없고요. 그래도 서로 언성 높이는 일, 빵빵거리는 일 없죠. 저야 일년에 몇달 살다가 돌아가는 생활을 반복하는 사람들이고, 아는 태국인이 많지 않긴합니다. 간혹 한국인들 중 사업하시는 분들 보면 사람 쓰는것에 고생이 많더라고요. 치앙마이 분들이 욕심이 없는 편이라, 일에도 욕심이 없으니, 교민들 만큼아니라 딱 관광객 마인드로 살짝만 들여다본 치앙마이는 적어도 외부인들에게는 천국이죠.
경험을 통해서만 가져볼 수 있는 소회와 고민들을 구체적인 숫자들까지 함께 공유해주셔서 감사합니다. 전 미처 생각 못한 부분들인데 확 실감이 나네요. 말씀 듣다보니 자주 가던 카오소이 집 생각났는데 지금은 줄서는 집이 됐는데도 가격은 딱 말씀하신 정도만 올랐고, 주방 벽 대신 세워둔 판자 하나, 테이블 장판 하나 새걸로 안 바꾸고 그냥 부부가 하루하루 보시하듯 장사하는 곳입니다. 덕분에 그분들 생각해볼 수 있었네요. 감사드립니다.

(중국 남부 민족)에 전통성을 가장 보존하고 있는 지역이 치앙마이 같네요.
한국 안동과 상주지역 등과 비슷한 특징들이 많은 곳 같습니다.

화폐 단위에 대해서는 저 역시도 비슷한 생각을 하곤 합니다만 제가 지식이 없다 보니 정답은 아니라는 생각이 듭니다.
필리핀의 페소를 예로 들자면 8월 12일 현재 1바트=37원 , 1페소=23원 정도 됩니다.
그런데 필리핀 물가 해마다 오릅니다.엄청.
실례로 필리핀의 졸리비에서 파는 햄버거 메뉴 중에 챔프는 10년 사이 두 배 넘게 올랐습니다.
이용자의 대부분이 서민들인 지프니라는 운송 수단도 두 배 넘게 올랐구요.
제 짧은 지식으로는 물가와 관련이 깊은 것 항목 중 하나가 부동산 가격이 아닌가 싶습니다.
치앙마이를 가보진 못했지만(...조만간 가 볼 예정입니다^^) 아마도 임대료의 큰 상승이 없지 않나 싶습니다.
당연히 매매가도 마찬가지일테구요.

툭툭은 항상 비싸게 부르지 않던가요? 저는 몇 번 계속 비싸게 부르셔서 그립만 이용했거든요. 저만 어수룩해서 그럴수도 있구요 ㅎㅎ
제 행색 때문이었는지 전 아직은 안 걸려봤네요ㅎ 또 지내다보면 막상 툭툭 탈 일이 드물기도 하더라고요. 예전엔 출국 전에 스쿠터 반납한 다음에 공항 갈 때 타고 했는데, grab 생기고는 탈 일이 없더라고요ㅎ grab이 참 좋은 거 같아요.

미세먼지는 어때요? 날씨 좋대서 장기체류하고싶긴한데 미세먼지가 너무 심하대서 고민입니다
1월 말부터 3달 정도는 피하는 게 좋습니다. 그때가 버닝시즌으로 보통 현지의 은퇴이민자들은 그 때 고국에 한번 다녀오거나 남부 섬으로 여행을 많이 가더라고요. 4월 송끄란 무렵부터 비가 슬슬 오기 시작해서 우기가 시작되면 공기는 다시 깨끗해집니다.(5월) 그래서 보통 건기가 시작되는 11월부터 1월초까지가 비도 없고 공기도 좋고 지내기엔 가장 좋습니다. 그래서 사람도 가장 많고요^^
현재 치앙마이에 두 달 넘게 체류중인데 2월 중순 넘어갈 때 쯤 부턴가 하늘이 뿌예요.체감으로는 한 두시간 바이크타고 돌아다니면 목이 칼칼하고 잔기침이 나요.지금 들어오시는 건 별로 추천 드리고 싶지 않네요.

대체로 빠른 편인 것 같아요. 치앙마이에 디지털노마드가 많은 이유 중 하나가 빠른 인터넷이기도 하고요.. 방금 찾아보니 민간업체 조사이긴 하지만 초고속인터넷 순위가 태국이 4위, 한국이 7위네요.(2021년) 모바일은 한국이 더 빠르다고 합니다. 개인적으로 인터넷 속도로 인한 불편은 못 느껴봤습니다^^

돈 욕심이 있거나 신분상승의 욕구가 있는 사람들은 태국인은 태국에 없고 다 외국에 돈 벌러 나가있습니다 ㅋㅋㅋ외국에 돈 벌로 안 나간(또는 못 나간)사람들이 지금 태국에 있는 것이죠 ㅋㅋ제가 있었던 공장에도 태국인 5명 있었는데 진짜 잠 자는 시간 빼고 일만 합니다 ㅋㅋㅋ월 400-500씩 벌어감 ㅋ
앞으로 한국에서 태국분들 만나면 친한 척 해야겠네요ㅎ
Not really. The Thai you met is very few. And if you meet more of them I preety sure they are not much different in their background/status since you met them in your factory as you said. Statistcally this type should not use as sample of a whole population which have many differences. Thai want to rise in status. Some might be even greed more than you think. I, like all Thai, do know that most Korean look at Thai to be very poor so they have to work esp. illegally in your country. However to say those who want money have to go working outside is not true. In fact, if you read comments from foreigners (not SKRean since you guys rarely cantact with us compare to others.That's why many Thai agree that most SKorean very misundestood Thai -- people, culture, etc.) you might see that many wonder why their Thai friends come back to the country after graduated although thay have chances to work there. This is right. All people around me do that. Very few stay abroad and work. The reason is very simple: they can earn more working in TH than working abroad or there might be not much different in term of money, plus they can get close to their loves one/environment which is compensation for them. Not talk about the purchasing power (not the nominal monney they earn. I'm talking about purchasing power) if they work in TH. These people usually come a pretty OK background/family status. That's why no reason for them to work abroad eventhough they might have chances to wok in other places due to their knowledge/character/connection/etc. I think it's the same in every country including SKR. To the extreme I would say the son of Samsung owner would have a lot more chance to work instead of working in other land and rise themselves from zero. People who have to work illegally or any those who work in blue collar jobs in your land is not in that situation.
