As a veteran FPV drone pilot, I love seeing the amazement and ingenuity new FPV pilots have when solving their problems. Using Mavics as rescue drones is a bit of a tradition in the FPV world. Perhaps even a right of passage. The smile and joy at the end when you finally get the drone back and realize that it's pretty much still works is what makes this hobby so great. Thanks for sharing your adventure and happiness in this video!
@@Formulemedia There are a lot of ways to recover dromes. Depending on where you're stranded, different approaches will work. A mavic drone with hooks or a net work great for drones that are lying on roofs what are difficult to access. Drones that get caught in trees can be recovered by climbing a tree so ladders are a great way to get there but if you're not ready to risk your life just yet, a rope with a water bottle serves as an easy (but very portable) way to get access to a branch in the tree that you can then start pulling hoping the drone falls out. There's also long sticks (dronegrabber?) that you can buy. They are a bit more expensive than a rope but typically a bit more effective in the tree scenario. Joshua Bardwell made a video about that a few years ago, going over the several ways you can recover a drone. The one thing that ALWAYS comes in handy in the process is HOPE and some positive energy though! Hope this helps you get some insight in the funny advenctures us drone nerds have when things go south 🤣
@@roylaon Both or fine frames to fly with. Personally I am a big fan of the GepRC MK5. It's been very good for me but the nazgul is very popular as well. Just look up the parts that will be in there and see if they fit your requirements (4S vs 6S, your RX protocol, your goggle's protocol, etc) and obviously your budget. One thing that I do think could come in handy is checking if you can source replacements parts for that drone easily in your location. You will be doing this so it's worth figuring out if you can fix the drone easily once you've flown/crashed it. Hope this helps! Happy flying!
This is my greatest fear when flying my FPV drones. I typically don't get "epic" footage because I'm so scared to lose my drones. 😢 I can feel the disappointment in your tone and see it in your face when you crash. I feel for you there. Then the excitement when you get it rescued... Unbelievable happy moment! This rescue is amazing! Already scheming on testing out my own rescue setup with my Air 2S. 😆
This is Awesome! Well done you! Great storytelling, great rescue, and the commercial was just the cherry on top. I am happy that you manage to lift this drone. Well done Peter! 👏👏👏👏👍👍🖖
Very entertaining and seriously impressive precision flying! I'm just wondering: if the magnet was stuck to the FPV drone and it would've gotten stuck, or the Mavic fell below the maximum towing power, how would you have been able to release the FPV drone so you could get the Mavic 3 back to safety? I suppose you could lower the drone first to release tension from the rope and then fly upwards quickly so the magnet snaps off? Curious to hear how you tackled this!
@@PeterLindgren1 dude! wish you would upload the footage of that! I was thinking you dropped tension off the string and maneuvered so the loop came off the hook on the magnet. So you determined before flight what strength string to use first?
It's funny this pops up because just I few days ago, I did just about the same thing, except using my original Mavic Mini. Tied a long string to the bottom of it with a rock tied on to the bottom. It was a rescue mission to get a Mavic Mini 3 pro out of a tall tree. It lifted the rock quite well. I was impressed with it. It didn't end up working through, so I had to climb the tree almost all the way up which was a little tough, but I got it.

I'm curious if you had a plan if the magnets stuck, but the mavic could not lift the load? I guess trying to unhook the magnets could work, like what happened by accident.
Nice job Peter! I've had to do the same kind of rescue before from a drone stuck on a 3 story apartment roof, but I used an improvised Hook on a short string. My biggest fear was the hook would get stuck on something and now I've lost two drones.

did the vtx survive too? thats the thing that tends to burn out smart move to not tie the magnets to tied otherwise you could have been teathered to the drone if it got stuck ^^ i think the motors are magnetic too?
at 9:34 you start lifting the drone, then you say that the battery of the mavic was running flat and you therefore aborted the lift.. How did you detach from the drone with the magnet?
Lowered the drone to release tension of the string, then pulled up as fast as I could. The force of the drone going up made the magnet loose it’s grip.
@@PeterLindgren1 okay. Thx. I get you. well done. I was also worried about what would happen if you ran into some other metal etc. you’ve answered that also. ☺️👍👏👏
Hey Peter, thank you for all the amazing content. I have a question I can’t seem to find the answer anywhere. Can I buy just a DJI controler, use it with their simulator software and only buy the drone and goggles once I feel confident with flying or do I have to buy the full kit all at once?
I used a Mavic with a magnet in the same way to retrieve a set of keys that had gotten tossed into the gutter on a three-story apartment building. One thing that I did was to use a servo-controlled remote "dropper" to attach the string to the rescue drone. I was very concerned that without the ability to break free of the line I might get the rescue Mavic stuck if the magnet attached to a heavier object or if the keys became tangled on the way out of the gutter. The dropper gave me a failsafe in that I could release the string and abandon the magnet if needed to save my Mavic.
good idea. BTW falloutdjsteve, what do you think about all gubments drawing a line around you(Antarctic Treaty) and saying you are not allowed to leave? If you don't know what I mean, read my about tab.
@@PeterLindgren1 Well, I'd rather have the test show a lower lifting capacity than what the drone can actually lift than have the test show a higher lifting capacity than what it can lift in the field. Good job on the creativity.
So, what if while lifting up the FPV it got tangled in the bush or something and the magnets were too strong and wouldn't release? Wouldn't you then have the Magic stuck too?
Just ordered one of those magnets for my drone recovery pole. The motors are also super magnetic and would have been where I probably would have tried first. Drone recovery and dropping fishing lures out to sea would be a great reason to get my old phantom working again. Not sure if I'd have taken the chance with a Mavic 3 unless I had a way to break away if the magnet got stuck.
At 7:46 you said that the only magnetic part on a drone are the screws. I haven't finished watching the video at this point, but I hope you know by now that the motors are extremely magnetic.
I did the same. I crashed my quad on school roof.. Very inaccessible as they were higher than any commercial available ladders. I went back home and grabbed my Mavic Pro. I transformed cloth hanging into triple-claw. I just realized, the quad on roof was still powered. I had to cover up conductive metal with electric tape. Successfully retrieved it! This is the reason why I will never sell my Mavic Pro.

How did u disconnect the magnet from the mk5 when the mavic couldn't lift it?
Lowered the drone and then quickly pulled up. Made the magnet come loose
