In island of Jamaica (the Caribbean), we wash the fruit when it's all ripe (changes to a really dark colour), remove the seeds, blend it with water. We then add vanilla, supligen (milk base drink), nutmeg and powder base milk. It will become this thick chocolate drink
I got some Black Sapote seeds in April, and after about a month of following the instructions that came with (put in a bag/mini greenhouse and give lots of heat and light), and still no sign of any germination, I got fed up with it, and stuck it on my fridge (where I start all my seeds), after about 3 more weeks I finally spot a little shoot 😲. It currently looks like 4:10. I'm so glad I found this video, I wasn't sure if the seed case was meant to still be under the soil 😄
We grew this while living in South Florida and were amazed at how fast this tree grew! Try making flan with the fruit, or spoon it out and whisk some powdered cinnamon in it, slice some strawberries on top and then squirt some cream on top and enjoy! Also makes great bread.
I have eaten it a few times and they are very good. As others have said the texture is pudding like but the taste is good but not chocolate pudding. I am growing it successfully in Central Florida US.
I recently found your channel! I appreciate all the information you provide, making this years gardening adventure a lot easier! Definitely want to try this fruit!
Ooh! Your seedlings look beautiful. Both of mine couldn’t shake off their pods, so one got a tiny bit damaged. They are from fruits that I got from a friends farm here in the Virgin Islands. It tastes like a sweeter avocado with the texture of an overripe avocado. It’s rich and light at the same time. I To bring out the chocolate flavor, I added a little vanilla, the tiniest bit of cinnamon, and it really made the flavor pop. It’s decadent, and I believe if you added some sweetener or stevia it would taste like pudding. Another fruit I LOVE and have seedlings of, are called Caimito or Star Apple. So delicious and beautiful, too! The color is a violet fuschia inside. My very favorite is Soursop, or Guyabana, also known as Graviola. Huge, juicy and prickly, they taste like a creamy pear and pineapple mix when ripe.
I've tasted black sapote frozen. A guy I bought my tree from freezes the pulp and eats it like that. He said it tastes a bit like a chocolate Paddle Pop when frozen. He was right. I found the frozen pulp refreshing and not quite as sweet as pudding but definitely nice to eat, almost like a Paddle Pop 🙂. I'm in Perth and my potted sapling is looking very happy so far with very little fuss.
He had to leave them with his parents when he moved to the city years ago and they died while he was gone. From what ive gathered from his comments on the subject, hes thought about growing a new one but has yet to do it
Awesome! Looking forward to growing these. We tried them at tropical fruit world in NSW and we had it with vanilla coconut ice cream and It was amazing and did taste like chocolate pudding.
Approximately where in Qld Coconut..?? I’m in Childers region, have two different Sapote varieties in black soil, alkaline, maybe some acidic mulch might assist..?? Regards Den
Hey mate. I'm in QLD. They are good. Nnsw has them growing. I've just harvested some seeds. I am thinking a heavy mulch will go a long way around the plant base when growing. The fruit is good. Goes mushy very fast.
Grow them here :) they are ok. Texture is good but no not chocolate flavoured haha. It’s kinda like a really mild, sweet avocado. I have had 1m trees killed by a freak frost here (-3 degrees Celsius) so yes definitely use a greenhouse there!
This was so awesome, thank you! I really want to try to grow this, a chocolate pudding fruit, from seed, then graph it to my american persiommon bonsai. Is there any way you or someone could send me a few seeds? It would mean so much. Just think about it and get back to me please! Thanks!!
Have you thought about trying to grow cloud berries? From what ive heard you can only get them fresh if you pick them yourself. However if i remember correctly they are extremely hard to grow Edit: spelling
Hey Kalem (sorry, I'm sure I heard and spelled that wrong), So, I have a black sapote seedling I've grown from seed. It's about a foot tall and I'm ready to plant it in the ground. I live in Los Angeles., so my climate is kinda similar to yours I think - though probably drier, I irrigate regularly. I haven't been able to find your follow-up videos to this, so you may have addressed this already, but... Based on your experience, can you tell me which of my planting locations you think would work best? 1) FULL sun from about 9am-6pm in the summer. It does get 100 degrees here (38c) occasionally. 2) Partial shade = FULL sun from about 9am-2 or 3pm when it gets shaded out by another large tree. The nearby tree canopy might also help keep the young black sapote warm in our winters (does get down to mid-30s (1-2c) at night). Thanks for your input!
I have a Persimmon Tree that bears fruit every year in Zone 8 (USA). I also have in a pot a Sapote Tree growing in my Sun Room. If they Persimmon is related to the Sapote, can the Sapote handle the Winters planted outside in my Zone (8) ? Lower Mississippi.
I've planted 7 seeds in good quality potting mix about 7 weeks ago and not one has sprouted. I know that they can take a long while to germinate, but this long??
Thanks for the video mate, I have two different varieties (I hope) of Black Sapote growing in Queensland, although they both seem very different, except for one that looks similar to the leaves on the one’s your growing, but the seeds are totally different, long and slender..?? I often wonder how many varieties there are.. The leaves and growing habits of the other tree are different in the extreme.. My fruit doesn’t taste very good, but my tree has only had three fruit on it in four years growth.. Maybe it needs more water.. Regards D…
I THINK it tastes like chocolate with a underlying flavour of fig. IT IS DELICIOUS. But you have to be patient. And it take 8 months for the fruit to mature. I let them fall off the tree. You have 3 days to eat them!! Worth it.
Hello from Georgia! Its so wonderful to see how you growing Black Sapote! Its my dream to have black sapot seeds..Can somebody explaine how can i buy them?
I ordered sapote from miami fruit. I am guessing you could eat the fruit then use the seeds. I have not tried growing them but really want to since i am in souther louisiana and believe they would do wonderfully here.
@@anastasiadiamond5591 i’m in Northern Nsw and we get the most fruit over summer but we have fruit all year round. Just need to make sure you pick and eat them at the right time or they can be quite bitter. The best way i can say when they are ready, is when they look so gross you wanna throw them on the bin (brown and mushy) thats when they’re ready! Hahaha
They seemed to germinate quite quickly, that's not one I've tried either eating or growing yet although I know about it. I've got around 20 persimmon varieties here in the UK

We have a couple of producing trees but this yr nothing….so we bought a similar size fruit from a local Nursery….fruit ripened faster and we’re sweeter than ours….so we plan to buy theirs and try another grow area…..normally store bought fruit taste less sweet and less chocolate flavor…we do like this newer fruit better….
I absolutely love persimmons and i love chocolate. However i dont like black sapote at all, not out of hand at least. I bet black sapote would make a good pie filling if combined with additional ingredients however.

I just ate one. They taste a little bit of avocado with a subtle taste of pudding. Very nice indeed. Definitely a dessert-fruit.
