Excellent Video! Thank you so much. Saved me a lot of money, and time. Hose had come off my solenoid valve on my 2000 Toyota Echo.

Hello, did you find out what caused the P0440? I also have the issue myself.

See reply up a few comments, basically no, never did find the problem, I clear it sometimes and it comes back again. Otherwise it runs fine at 150K.

Sergio- When you energize it you can feel and hear the coil pull in and it stays pulled in until you disconnect and again you can feel and hear the coil relax. I also connected a small piece of tubing and drew some suction on it with my mouth and it didnt seem to leak either.Normally open or closed depends on 'normal' - which generally means when the device is non-energized or straight out of the box. This confusing notation is also used on relays.I think the computer decides when to open this solenoid valve in order to draw some fumes out of the charcoal canister so it doesn't overload with gas fumes. I imagine the computer closes the port when the engine needs the most help running smoothly (cold start, low rpms, AC running) and opens it to pull out some gas vapors when it wont be noticed(decelerating, engine warmed up, no cylinders missing, not running rich).Several years later now, it still has this engine error about 50% of the time but we don't notice any other problems. Yes I've replaced the gas cap. Just leaving it alone now at 150K miles, runs fine otherwise. We do not have emissions testing here so I cant say if it would pass but I doubt it.

@@steves_handy_tips And finally how did you fix the code P0440 on your toyota echo because I have one and yesterday the check engine come on, pulled out the code with a scanner and is the same P0440...How did you fix the problem.

I have a 2001 Toyota echo as well. I have p0440, p0441, and p0446. I bought a new gas cap from the Toyota dealer and the codes didn’t go away. Checked the hoses and they’re all connected. I’m hoping it’s not the charcoal canister. I’m not sure what else to do now. My car won’t pass the smog check because of the check engine light.

@@CrPerez25 I am pretty sure you have a leak in hoses or the purge valve is bad. In my case it was the code p440 the problem was solved with a brand new gas cap. In your case is a leak or purge valve broken because when the p440 appears alone can be a bunch of stuff in connection the whole charcoal canister system..
In your case is easier because it is giving you more signs the code p441 and p446 that mean is air leak in some part of the system...check hoses attached the canister, purge valve and hoses in general...

Ah, I see now. So it seems like it’s most likely a leak in the hoses. I’ll give them a better look. Thank you! Appreciate the info.
