gotta be 8.0 or less or im not riding it
You should try the Indy stage 11 lows. I ride Indy low 139 on an 8.12 deck. Best set up I have found. Makes flip tricks rotate a lot faster. I can lock grinds easily and I like the lower to the ground feel as well.
idk y i chuckled.
He said it with a straight face too😂😂😂
I ran this set up for 10 years . I loved it . Deluxe 8.25 and 139 Indy’s .
What Indys ? Silver Stage 11 ?
Back in the day I Road an 8-inch board with 7.5 ventures. Did some of my best tricks with that setup.
that's my set-up now!
I'm 47
@@theJACK__ mines 8.25 real with 144 indys now. I'm 49 when I bought that 8inch board (1995ish) I asked for the biggest board they had in the shop. 😁
@@YorkshireMatt
yeah I remember 8s were "tanks"😆
Lol I remember those days too, my dedicated transition board was a huuuuge 8.0 inch 🤣 felt like riding a Cadillac compared to most street setups of the day
Majority of my skating was on 8" board with whatever thunder truck is 7.6 wide. I've been really contemplating about going back down. I'm riding an 8.25" with 8" thunders. Can't flip the board like I used to. Even an 8.25 feels like a boat.
Greetings from Puerto Rico! Thanks for all the great content. Im in my 40s, started with Indys and rode ventures for most of the 90s so i can relate to ur appreciation for the Venture lows. Now Im in that same back n forth of Indy vs Thunder..but looking forward to checking out the new Slappy trucks brand.
Something that helps with this kind of setup is using 3 washers on the inside of each wheel. This helps push out the wheels so it feels less tippy. One of my favorite setups is an 8.125" deck with Indy 139's with the washers.
I have been riding 8.0 Indy hollows on either a 8.125 and 8.25 and yes my flat has gotten so much better. I used to ride that set up 10years ago and I skated my best ever then so lately I’ve been trying emulate that same feel. I’ve had some success with it but gotta still work on ledges and rails
One of the best setups I ever had was a 7.875" board on 7.625" Thunder 145's. I was worried it would be a problem, but it turned out to be fun and have a good feel. Having trucks a quarter inch smaller than your board is better than having them wider than your board. They probably turn better since you get more leverage over them.
I found the opposite to be true. I use 8.25 decks with 8.5 trucks and it turns way better then 8.25 or 8.0 trucks
I Skated recently 8.5 and 8.25 deck with 14inch wheelsbase with thunder 147 and loved it, switched to 8.25 with Indy 139 (cause the News Deck had longer 14.25 wheelbase) and hated it, just didn’t work, put back thunders and it felt perfect again! Didn’t know why though… now I guess I have an idea! Thanks @bendegros for catching the devil in the detail like always!
What deck was it? Been looking for decks wider than 8.0 but cant hardly seem to find very many that dont have like a 14.25 wheelbase. Not a big guy and like venture lows i just wanna move up in width.
Hi! I had a anti hero “true fit” which was 8.5 with 14” wheelbase, but they are kind of Hard to find, check Tired, Chocolate and Girl boards, they have many with 14” wb
Just sized down to a 8.25 on 8” trucks. Might even grab an 8 deck next. Crooked grinds are a bit harder, i’d agree.
I had 139 Indy standards on a G052 Girl board, which is 8.25 wide and has a 14 inch wheelbase. My flatground was the best it’s ever been and never at one point did I feel tippy or out of control. It didn’t sound like a setup that should’ve worked, but somehow it did for me! 😂
139 silver 11 ?
I switched from 149 to 139's hollows on an 8.25 board and I've been absolutely in love with it. My flip tricks are on point, I'm not uncomfortable anymore on different grinds, and I'm very comfortable turning switch fakie or regular now and I've never had that advantage before. I ride smaller wheels than most at the 52 to 53 range new until they're smaller... That being sad I have a wide range of trucks and a wide range of deck sizes because I still can never figure out what the hell I want. But right now I'm enjoying it😂 low trucks for sure are better for me always tho.
Similar experience here. I started on an 8.0 with hollow 139s and have since scaled up to an 8.25 but kept the 139 hollows. Only potential issue I have is sometimes feel a bit more wheel bite if I land flip tricks a bit off center but don't know if I can blame that on my trucks lol.
Are Indys too high ?
8.25 board with 147 Thunders is the ultimate setup, at least for me! Been riding 147 Thunders for 20 years🫡
U should try the 148 team hollow or standard if u don't like light trucks
Ben, the black antihero eagle is a 8.12 I believe. I’d double check that. The grey one is 8.25
YES that is what others have been saying too, so I think this might help a little for the DLX size of boards can be a bit different.
AH black eagle = 8.125 x 32 with 14.25 wb and 6.7 or so tail (might measure a touch wider than 8.125)
AH grey eagle = 8.25 x 32 with 14.38 wb and 6.5 or so tail (measures more like 8.3+ in width though)
That makes sense with everything in that video too.
He is riding an eagle from a season or two ago when the released some eagles in the “true-fit” mold with shorter wheelbases I believe. If you see true fit on DLX boards they have a shorter wheelbase- and if I’m not mistaken he’s riding a dark wood stained 8.25 true fit mold eagle, not the traditional
I just recently went from 149 standard to144 hollow forged on an 8.25 its made a world of difference, loving it.
Best skateboarding youtube channel ever created! Keep it up ben 😸
I just switched from a 7.75 deck to an 8.25 with the same 8 inch indy forged hollow truck, 5 mm riser pad and 56 mm wheels and it feels amazing 😂
It's important to know that I don't really do grinds but love to do super popped flip tricks
That's a massive jump in land mass. How u liking the switch so far? Do you feel more confident with a larger deck and familiar trucks?
@@phfighter9465 thanks for your question, yeah it is and I was a bit scared at first mostly because I love to do 540 flips and didn't know in what extent would the change effect them, but it's really good so far. The only issue I'm having is that I skate a deck til it's basically unusable which means the nose and tail get short and really narrow and pointy until I buy a new one (because of money issues), so it's really hard to get used to a big tail and nose once again. But I'd say everything feels the same so far as when I bought a new 7.75 deck the only difference is, everything I land feels more comfortable and stable. Really good experience I'd say, but it's only been a week yet curious how it's gonna perform when it breaks in as much as I like it. It's usually on the 3-4 week mark.
@dominikturi646 outstanding! We all get attached to our decks after spending the time breaking them in.
Riding a deck until its dead is to be expected. Real sense of accomplishment when u stare a your limp noodle of board with its razored tail knowing that piece of wood gave you everything it had👍🏾
Keep pushing 🛹👏🏾
@@phfighter9465 that's the spirit I can relate to! I won't let my board down until it lets me down first!
Keep up the grind!
0:20 that frontside flip is just so solid
I hated my experience on 5.0 Venture Lows on a pretty mellow board with a long tail. I never even considered everything was geared towards a bad experience though.
These last two vids have made me consider trying them again on a short and steeper tail.
Always with the madness!
I just bumped my setup to an 8.7 with 159 Indy forged hollows (8.75" axle). Only thing I don't like about these wider decks most are making is they're too long! Like almost 33". I'd much rather prefer max of 32" but having trouble finding shorter wide boards. I got it from Chapman and for some reason they dont list any of their board lengths? I'm dumbfounded by that. Any idea on their lengths? Maybe their 8.5 or 8.6 are shorter
I ride 8.25 with a 144 Indy mid hollows which it sits 50.5 ride height and it felt amazing on the sweet spot where not only grinds but flip tricks and stability especially riding trucks very loose.
Yesterday I tried an 8.75 setup with 149 Indy’s and really enjoyed it. Think it made flip tricks easier for that size. I got the inspo after watching 8.25 and 8 in trucks.
At that size it’s probably awesome.
Definitely turns on a dime. The 50-50’s lock in pretty well. Seeing that video gave me the green light to finally go back to 8.75 but this time with a 1/4 smaller truck. Appreciate the vids Ben 🙌
Forever stuck between “maybe if I make these small changes to my setup, certain tricks will click” and “just get better, you dummy”
+1
Great video... I actually have this setup. 8.25"board & 139 Indies.
The notable difference in my setup is offset Nano Cubic wheels, so more hanger space is available 👨🔬
I just recently got my 1st pair of Thunders. 148's. I expected them to feel and perform like my Ventures. WOW! I WAS WRONG! On Ventures, I get bucked off the board because it doesn't want to turn. The Thunders are opposite. They made my Aces feel like tight trucks. Aside from wheelbite, partly due to 54mm wheels, I love these Thunders. I have them mounted to a Creature with a 14.35" wheelbase. Which, btw, I think is my forever board....Creature everslick.
I’ve got 8.25 Indy hollows on an 8.5 bbs board right now and I’ve gotten used to it, but I think I’ll be switching to my 8” thunders on an 8.25 deck when it’s time. It’s perfectly skateable but I agree that lower trucks just lock in more consistently and make it much easier to pop well on steeper decks.
What you're explaining/experiencing are the effects of center of gravity. Something tall and narrow has a higher center of gravity and more likely to tip over, but when you lower the center of gravity, either by lowering it, or widening the base (wider trucks) you increase the stability. It's why off-roading vehicles widen their wheel bases when they install lift kits. Helps counter the increase height of center of gravity and risk of flipping.
Personally, I can't do standard Indy's (55mm height), they're too tall for me. What I've ended up with is a frankentruck from them. I take the hangers from the Indy Titaniums (53.5mm), and replace the baseplate with the ones from Forged MiD's (50.5mm) for the Inverted Kingpin. Normally if you were to swap the normal baseplate from the Titaniums with the Inverted Kingpin conversion kit they sell, it would increase the height to 55mm, but the Forged MiD's allow it to keep the 53.5mm height. If I'm not mistaken that's the same axel height as non-low Ventures, with Venture Lows being 48.3mm
If i didnt know better id say Ben has a little of the madness back and that excites me greatly !
I always rode a magic carpet setup. I prefer a wider board and a narrow truck as I like a tighter turning radius
I think you should do at least three sessions with a setup to see if it fits or not. I feel like every skater has these very good and very bad sessions for "no reason". other then that, love to see your videos, always very insightful! :)
I second this motion actually. Because it's true. I swear there are days I cant land a kickflip in 20 tries, and some days I can land 20 in a row, all boned and caught.

this was my setup for years before any companies had 8.25 trucks. could never get used to 8.25 board on 8.5 trucks. love the 144/148/5.6
i skated this type of setup for a long time because its just what i had, it was squrily and it required more accurate truck placement when grinding. when i went from 139 to 144 indys i noticed a big weight diffrence and stability diffrence
Hm so heavier weight difference?
Great video! Would really like to hear your thoughts on the Ace AF1s, either hollow or standard.
I had a 8.38 FA with Indy 139’s and main positive was noticeably catching flip tricks higher. Now ride Indy 144 standard much more stable grind and roll.
I have been skating 8" Indys 139 for a long time on decks from 7.75" up to 8.50" , for me that was the normality hence I used to change decks more often than trucks, only recently within the past year I have realized that I needed to match the truck size with the boards width, so I have started buying a set of trucks of each size from 8" up to 9" , Indys and Thunders also. I definitely prefer now having my trucks like the same size of my board.
Have you tried 139 silver 11 ?
Man do I hope you decide to do a cross Canada trip one of these years, and that it brings you through Lethbridge 😅 Would love to skate with you and think it'd be a good time BS'ing about gear with someone that actually pays attention and knows the numbers
Hey nice video, thank you! What would you say about the influence of the height of a truck when it is wider than your deck size?;)
Got on 8.75 Minilogo trucks (as low as 48mm) on 8.5 mellow kicks deck …and just don’t want anything else. I’m fine!
Have you tried the forged hollow mids. I'm just curious because,I've made myself start to skate a small board again(down to an 8.3 from a 9), and I actually finally like the mids.
I haven’t tried them in anything but 139 and 144 standard. I liked them both. A bit heavy but they were great for ledges.
I found that spitfire classic shape tends to slip out on crooked grind. bones v1 with slight sharper edge makes huge difference doing that kind of tricks.
Hey Ben
Riding an 8.6 with 159 Indy standards' is a killer combo!😎
Now we want to see the same video with a thunder 147 😉 pretty much the ishod wair setup
Currently riding an 8.25 Mario McCoy vx twin on 5.2 venture lows.. best setup I've had
did you ask your boss permission to skate it?
@@theJACK__ oh look the pedophile... does your parole officer know you have TH-cam?
Exact setup I've been thinking of running for my next setup, but i've never tried a vx before. Been hunting for a twin deck that'll pair well with the 5.2 lows. good stuff
You are into the never ending spiral of the "my best setup" syndrome :-)
Not really. I’ve been testing boards and it keeps me trying to find the right truck for it. I already know exactly what I like to ride and as soon as I have a steady supply of the right deck I will settle down.
I thought your perfect deck would be that one customised by Dr. Scmitt@@bendegros

😋
I tried every truck. The best are Indy’s, the mids and the stage 4s. Too gewd!!!
Reynolds rides 139 Indys on a 8,5 Board...and I feel him. I am old too and from the 90s😂 love the bigger board dont love the wide trucks😊
This is why I'm curious about the 139 and 144 Indy mid forged hollows. 50.5mm high. Do they have good pinch? Pop?
i do like this setup. i've been riding decks wider than trucks since late '90s
to be fair, i'm not good or consistent enough for it to affect me enough to notice. what i do notice is that they flip faster
I used to love this board size with a 139 as it felt better than 149’s
Isn’t the black eagle an 8.125? The 8.25 eagle is grey right?
I just cranked-on a set of THUNDER 151's on a POLAR 8.5 with 97a classic spits.
You’re so good ben omg
I had the same problem. Switching from 8.0 ventures to 8.0 Indy’s. Couldn’t stay locked in and pinched with my crooked grinds. Had to switch back to the ventures
Hey Ben. Ive been having trouble replacing bushings on my venture 5.0 lows. I cant find bushings small enough. Any recommendations?
for the last 10 years: 8.38 with 139s , 14.25 wheelbase. Then this year I added 3 washers on the inside each wheels to make the Indys more like a 142 ;)
Can you plssssss review the Indy Stage 4s :))))
The black eagle board is 8.12" with a 14.25" wb.
9.125 Franky Villani egg deck with Independent 151 trucks feels real good riding and doing tricks
Isn't the black eagle an 8.12? Unless they decided to change the sizes for the different colors of the classic eagles, I'm pretty sure the black eagle is an 8.12 and the grey one is the 8.25.
Hey Ben, when would be a good time for a new boarder to move away from a complete and start toying around with a setup like you do?
I'm riding 8.25 board to 8" thunder hallow lights with indi bushing 😎🤙 feel's great. I want to try bones medium bushing soon. What do you think sir ben?
Nice
Is the video for your perfect new concrete ledge in the works or dropping soon? I'm quite curious to see the build process behind it.
I’ve been working on it here and there. It’s just a big process and I’m daunted by it.
@@bendegros Yeah that understandable. Well at least we know it's in the pipeline somewhere. Your last concrete ledge video at Richmond park is nearing a million views though so maybe that's a little bit of incentive? Keep on doing your thing regardless. Always enjoy the new uploads.
You looked like you were in your zone on the venture lows. But Indy has a truck out that is 50.5mm tall
Those would probably be great but I will probably stick to venture for now.
How bout the other way around Ben? I have a 8.25 anti hero with og ace 55s with 55mm spitfires. Love how I lock in on grinds.
Started skating 14.5 wheelbase on ventures. In my mind I told myself it would be horrible to skate, to my surprise its the best feeling setup ive ever had and my pop is so consistently snappy. Also I thought scoopy tricks would be harder, but tre, fakie tre, and biggerflip are all the same. Maybe the tiniest bit more effort, however all the positives outweigh that small negative for me. Additionally the 8.5 og baker shape is very nice, whereas 8.25 baker is the worst pointiest shape board
139 hollows on 8.25 deck 52mm wheels 🙌🔥
8.5 or 8.38 with 144 or 148 feels good
Rode an 8.5 hockey with 147 thunder hi’s and unexpectedly loved it. Thought I would hate it because of how wonky it looked but ended up being a lot of fun
im a 8.0” with vintage 7.6 grindkings & radial fulls kinda guy. The kind of radial fulls that cover the axle
Ben I'm extremely proud of you n your content if that makes any sense. I've watched u since u started your channel I've subscribed a few times but been unfortunately mentally disturbed n delete everyone, your all enemies lol jk. But ✔️ this out, I'm thinking of getting a cruiser deck thas a 9.0. Kinda brings me back to 87-89. I've been skating 7.78-8.0. What size trucks should I throw on one of these 57 chevs? I like for my truck to be flush with my deck. Not a32" in or over tha same. Reason y I'm asking is because I'm thinking a wider truck n front but idk. Thanks for everything man u have excelled in every way but that's no step for a stepper like u man
What video did you do 8.25 with 8 inch ventures. I’ve been wanting to skate 8 inch board with 145 thunders or 129 Indy’s. What do you think
Look forward to giving 5.6 hollows out next..
Hey Ben
Or you should try indy mid 139. It is lower than 53 which meets your numbers.
im riding venture 5.0 low on 8 inch, its great u should try it
preach brudda!
I'd love your take on Thunder 147s on 8.25"+. Ishod and Shane O'neill skates 147s with larger boards, and the 147s are lower than 148 standards and up
I have that same set up Yeah that's how I feel, I can't get into grinds consistently.
(Went from 8 to 8.25 deck but haven't changed trucks yet)
What about ace’s ?
U rippinnnn
'im on indy forged hollow 139 with an 8.25 for 10 years now
tried to step it up to 144 for 3 times and allways went back, love how tippy and fast it is
locking in for me is easier and more precise with 139 also
I have always thought that indy 139 standards was a weird truck being it 55mm height while Thunder 147 is its own low height at 50mm compared thunder 148 and 149 at 52mm
Same TALL narrow trucks are much too tippy...

Which indys ?

Hello from France
I've been skating for 27 years, I've always skated venture low in 139, for a few months I've been trying thunder but I find them weird, it's much less stability than venture. Now I'd like to try indy but your video makes me hesitate. I've never wanted to try the indy 55 standard, 55mm on 139 is too high, but I thought I'd try the forged hollow ( 53.5 ). I don't know whether to take this or the indy 139 mid. The indy mid axle/nut bothers me, I'm afraid it'll unscrew and it bothers me not to be able to see the nut when I want to, it's hidden underneath, i'm not used to a nut like that.
sorry about my english, I don't speak it very well.
I skate 8.25 with 8.25 trucks. But I have spare 8 inch trucks. So I find wider wheels that cover the nut. 58mm OJ Elite fit 8.25 with 8 inch trucks. 60mm Ricta Clouds fit 8.5 with 8 inch trucks. 😎
For as long as I can remember the black eagle boards been 8.125 (with a brief stint of 8.18) and the grey 8.25. Whered you find a black 8.25?
check out doing this setup with andy andersons nano cubic wheels that move the bearing position and stick out further and make smaller trucks feel wider
This has been my setup for a while now, maybe I should try some wider trucks when I get the chance
Maybe..but if it works don’t sweat it.
@@bendegros True
144 hollows on 8.25 girl deck og concave g052 is my sweet spot. 139s way too hard to lock in, if anything I'll go back up to 149s ! Indys for life.
I can’t do shoves without going primo on 8.25 with 139s :(
That has more to do with technique. Sounds like you use the pocket to shuv. You should have your foot in the centre of the tail so it stays flat when you pop.
Question.. having smaller trucks than the board does not necessarily help to skate better ? think all these parameters are also in the mind, but madness is hard to prevent haha
I ride an 8.25 steep concave (Zero) with 52 bone V1 shape and 139 Indy S11 Hollow. It feels like an 8, but with more foot room.
Thoughts on the compound of the truck affecting the grinds? I've found over the past two years that there's just something about the metal they use in the ACE AF-1 that grinds way smoother for me.
I love Ben
If you tried the Indy 139 MiD's, I feel like you would love them.
Have you tried the spitfire lock in fulls?
Have they made you pro yet? 🤔
I wish I could step do a smaller wheelbase and try 8” trucks again. Being 6’2 and 210 pounds necessitates the longer wheelbase so I don’t slip out going fast and turning 🫤 I did move from Indy’s to Thunders a few months ago and love them. Helped with removing ghost pop too. Never tried Ventures.
Hmmm will smaller wheels work stabilizing with a tall truck? Spitfire just came out with 43mm F4s
I use a indepent truck 129mm in 8.25 deck🤯
How about Indy mids inch wide? You can get even inverted kingpin with them
Bro my setup is an 8.12 board with 145 thunder, that’s a 129 mm I guess
And I use washers to get more room for grind. it’s so fun setup and light weight
