A truly iconic song of the 80s. ...takes me straight back to being an 8yr old kid ....riding my bmx... break dancing.. climbing trees and playing what would become classic 80s tracks on my ghetto blaster. ...miss those days big time.
It was early 1984 and there was only one radio station back then, playing the music us kids liked. At 1am or so there was a show bringing new releases and I was - as so often then - lying on the floor in front of my Technics Stereo-Tower with my headphones on (my parents wouldn't approve of me being up that late and not getting enough sleep for the following school-day) - listening to what was new. The guy on the radio said something about an all new and unknown artist from GB and his new single "Wherever I Lay My Hat". I always recorded the show to be among the first ones to have a tape of the new songs. Damn, was I glad to having recorded this particular show! Somewhere in some old box among all the crap that I left behind , somewhere in my parents' house, some 9,000 miles from here, there's still this tape that I've listened to over and over and over again..
Paul Young - a fantastic smooth voice. This track, shows his voice to perfection. The 80's were full of great bands, and great emerging talents. Boy...........does time fly by!!!

Most definitely I've only come across 3 basses like that in 25 years of playing. With mass produced guitars you find a rare special one every once in a while. You instantly know it too.
This song truly brings back the 80's. A time when we intelligently celebrated diversity and inclusion didn't even need to be mentioned as it just happened naturally. Hate and racism rarely reared their ugly heads. The future seemed powerfully optimistic. Forty years later and it's like we've returned to the bleakness of WWII - regressing 40 years. 80's music is a momentary escape into an optimistic past.
70’s child but grew up through the 80’s and boy do I miss music from those eras. Damn if it wasn’t the best music you’ve heard during those times...... Great Memories!
Wow! This guy used to make my day in the 90’ when I started listening to it as a young boy. I forgot the name of the guy at some point just stumbled on it at classic fm 99.3 here in Lagos, Nigeria and I was made to remember his beautiful name again which is Paul Young. I love the song 🎶 like nothing else. 😢😢❤❤
Remember this song like it was yesterday because it was so well executed it exploded Paul Young on to the pop scene back in July 1983 when this track spent 3 weeks in July at number 1 and helped rocket his excellent album "No Parlez" to the top of the charts from which he had a number of hits no doubt about it he was up there with the George Michael's ,David Bowie 's and Rod Stewart's that summer so thanks for brilliant memories Paul!!!

This is a song that has stuck in my head for almost 40 years but amazing how all the elements came together to create a bit of magic. Picking an original b side, slowing it downl adding the bass guitar and keyboard leading to a song for all time (at least in my opinion). As things move on with technology i can't help but feel a lot of the craftmanship in music and eleswhere is being lost at its expense.
Paul Young, has Got the Best Voice Ever In History of any Artists, Nothing But PERFECTION, He Sing's this in Perfect Melody, Love this Man's Voice 🤓👍🍻💋💋💋👏👏👏😗😉💋
As much as I like the Marvin Gaye version, the production on this one is so amazing. They took a twenty year old song and made it sound like an eighties power ballad. If you didn't know the song existed before, you'd never know it was a Motown rerecording.
I only just now listened to the original. I knew it was a Marvin Gaye song but had always assumed it to have been part of his more independent, reflective and mature 70s output, not something from the 60s Motown heyday. In that sense, I feel that this version not only updated the song for the 80s, but takes Gaye's musical development into account too.

This is one of my faveriout Paul Young songs, its unforgettable, its soulful tones of Paul's voice which has a unique sound to it, I like it because it tells a sad story and is a very soulful sounding track, I think Paul's singing voice is amazing, the unique quality of it and the beautiful tones, ever changing scales he show cases his voice so well with this song, Paul has the singing voice of an Iconic legend, one you carnt forget. The 80s was a special era of music I was a teenager then, I am now 54, but I still listen to some great singers from the 80s who are quality artists that I cherish, as well as some new R & B singers, I love. Thank you to Paul for all those wonderful music tracks he released, what a pleasure it was to just listen to and sing along with his music, back then, and now, today still a pleasure, every time I hear it. As a bass player I drool over Pino’s bass work on this track. As a singer I gush over Paul’s vocal delivery. Everything in this song comes together remarkably to create an unforgettable piece of art born of a relatively forgettable Marvin Gaye cut from the late 60’s.
To call Marvin Gaye's version - as the songwriter - unforgettable is insulting. The horns and drumming on the original are superb, and Marvin's louche, casual, throw away interpretation is more suited to the actual sentiment of the song. Paul Young is brilliant but he sounds like he cares about being a vagabond - why? - it's dissonant with the lyrics. They are two different songs.
Between Pino’s incredible bass playing and Paul’s amazing soul voice, that’s what makes me listen to this track to this day.
Pino is an amazing bassist. I must admit I've been on a bit of a pino trip today.
I find this song because of Pino Palladino. Amazing fretless basslines.
Was Pino involved in the Commodores 'nightshift' because this song sounds super similar musically

Wonderful to hear this great song again
Paul Young never ceases to amaze!!!
Fab song christine
A genuine pop classic. Warm and sincere. Loved it then, love it now.
My favourite song by Paul. No parlez has been brought so many times. Saw him at Northampton theatre two years ago. 😀😀
Phenomenal song and era for music.. God I miss the 1980s ♥️
should have 1 billion views
80s was the best decade for music ever
Paul Young is the real deal.
He is a real deal Mshengu ❤

This is a song that has stuck in my head for almost 40 years but amazing how all the elements came together to create a bit of magic. Picking an original b side, slowing it downl adding the bass guitar and keyboard leading to a song for all time (at least in my opinion). As things move on with technology i can't help but feel a lot of the craftmanship in music and eleswhere is being lost at its expense.
Playing now for all of youz 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
ONE OF THE BEST SONGS OF THE 80'S. OCTOBER 2020!
Another wonderful song music Paul Young always loved the song where ever l lay my hat thank you sharing it
Unforgettable ❤ Thanks Paul Young for great music from Zimbabwe ❤
I'm just finding out tonight that this is a remake. Young did a terrific job.
This is one of the rare cover versions that is actually better than the original.
I'm perfect
***** So sorry but "I think we're alone now" was Tommy James and the Shondells, who also did "Mony, Mony" and "Crimson and Clover"
Beautiful, a real tearjerker.
i come here from time to time...it takes me back.Thank you mister paul.Hope you are good wherever you are.
This is the first Paul Young song I remember when the video shows exploded all over the tv back in '83. I recently downloaded this on my playlist.
This time 1983 was my fantastic and wonderful time!! In diesem Jahr ist meine Tochter geboren. Die 80's waren wunderbar...👍🎵🎼🎶🍃🌹

I played this at my Dad's funeral. Seem morbid. But totally wasn't. This song means the world to me.
Songs have different meaning for different people, it's what it means to you that matters. Sorry for your loss and God bless you for your future
It’s a great song with Paul Young’s distinct vocals.
Sorry for your loss of your father, teacher and friend.
This is a perfect song to play at a funeral... may your dad be resting in the highest of the heavens until you meet up again..God bless 💜
Such a great song sorry about your dad
♥️
Transports me right back to being 7 years old getting ready for school. Man, I miss the 80s so much it hurts.
As a bass player I drool over Pino’s bass work on this track. As a singer I gush over Paul’s vocal delivery. Everything in this song comes together remarkably to create an unforgettable piece of art born of a relatively forgettable Marvin Gaye cut from the late 60’s.
Absolutely
Totally agree
I like how he made it more melancholy. Seems more fitting. Gorgeous voice. 💜
Very beautiful vocal song❤
To call Marvin Gaye's version - as the songwriter - unforgettable is insulting. The horns and drumming on the original are superb, and Marvin's louche, casual, throw away interpretation is more suited to the actual sentiment of the song. Paul Young is brilliant but he sounds like he cares about being a vagabond - why? - it's dissonant with the lyrics. They are two different songs.
I was 12 yrs old when I heard and saw the video of this song. I will always remember the impact it had on me! I had the biggest crush on Paul young
