  • United Nations - Plastic - both a wonderful invention and a scourge on our planet. Over 300 million tons will be produced this year.
    Most is never recycled and remains on our land and in our seas for ever. Our story shows the damage to all creatures who depend on the ocean for their food - from birds… to us.
    21st Century: Episode #126
    This is an adaptation from the original documentary “A Plastic Ocean” by the Plastic Oceans Foundation

Theoretically, but also with different governments, the UN, and companies beginning to recognize these problems, I believe their is hope yet for the worlds ocean pollution problem.

    I remember as a child our cold drinks and milk bottles were glass and were resold and re-used. Even alcoholic beverages were sold in returnable glass bottles. Shopping bags were made out of paper. Any other liquid and cream products were sold in glass containers. All these containers had metal caps. All packaging was done with paper and paper products. Even our toys were metal and packed in paper.

I suggest we do our best, regardless because this planet may be massive relatively speaking however, it is becoming very small as more and more of it is being treated like our own personal garbage heap.

    If birds are mistaking plastic for thier food, this indicates depleting fish in the sea. I think this problem will soon come round us (deservedly)

    • @oeman7363
      @oeman7363 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah it's terrible, both plastic and the global overfishing rate is an environmental crime in itself. I'm not saying you're wrong, it's a good point, however it's unlikely that a fish would mistake a large piece of plastic for food, (with the exception of turtles who mistake plastic bags for jellyfish) as a lot of fish live very deep or in areas that aren't fished.
      The ingestion of plastic more often comes from micro plastics & eating other fish that have consumed plastic themselves . It can also enter through their gills or their filtration/feeding system. Hence why whales, basking sharks and other ocean giants are some of the worst victims of ocean pollution.
      Just out of interest does anyone know if there is any sea creature other than turtles that eats jellyfish?
      Sorry for the essay!

    • @JS-qg1ie
      @JS-qg1ie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think the amount of fish birds eat makes a sizeable dent on fish stocks and would affect their choice of food. If anything I’d say by birds eating plastic and dying their hunger is fulfilled and less fish would be eaten thus raising fish stocks on a minuscule level. It’s the cats that go hungry ;-)

    I grew up in the USSR, we had no plastic bags when buying groceries. We had permanent totes, bags, etc. The bags we did have we washed, and washed, and washed again, so many times until they were completely unusable. Only then they would end up in trash. No plastic bottles, and all bottles you buy were recyclable you would get quite a bit money back for taking it to the collection place. The nice part is that you'd rarely see any sort of mess around beaches, woods, that you see now that those countries have access to all the plastic.
    To be fair, USSR messed up the environment badly in other ways, but at least we had clean streets, woods and beaches.

      As for plastic bottles and bags, I grew up with glass bottles and paper bags and neither were that great. Broken glass in the streets and bags that fell apart when wet. It's also nice not having the jam or whatever be lost if the jar gets knocked onto the floor.

    If you want a way to reduce your waste:
    1. Everything you buy, every bottle, cup, plastic fork, container - put it in your car. Yes, the stuff from school & work too.
    2. Only clean your car once a month.
    3. In a year, you will have figured out how to reduce or eliminate all your plastic use.
    This might sound silly, but when I first started this, I wasn't really aware of how many bottles and cans I used every month.
    After a few months of this, I just don't buy anything in plastic bottles anymore.
    I still get the occasional "Arizona ice tea" in aluminum cans, but never, ever, plastic. Aluminum is a valuable recycled metal.
    Of course, try not to put any food scraps in your car.
    Once you have to carry around all your waste in your car, your behavior will change.
    Good Luck and I hope you have great success in reducing and eliminating all the unnecessary plastics from your life !

    A wide variety of things can be done to reduce plastic wastage.
    Plastic manufacturers will continue to supply plastic while the demand for it remains.
    Every time we buy food that is wrapped in plastic packaging, (fruit and vegetables for example) we contribute to the demand for that particular type of plastic. We can reduce the demand if we choose to buy loose fruit and vegetables.
    Independent fruit and veg stores don't use a large amount of plastic. Most of all their fruit and vegetables are sold loose.
    Another thing we can do to reduce demand on plastic is to buy milk in glass bottles. I buy milk in glass bottles from a local milk delivery company. The price is higher but it's very convenient to have milk and other groceries delivered to your door.
