Hundreds of farms across America used wastewater sludge as cheap fertilizer to fertilize crops for people and animals to graze, but absurd levels of PFA's levels were detected in the meat and vegetables above the FDA allowed levels.
Wastewater sludge should be sent to landfills, not used as fertilizer. There are likely many substances including PFAS present in the sludge, I would be concerned about microplastics as well.
I am retired now and only have a decorative BOD5 bottle in my home as a reminder of the years I spent analyzing wastewater influents and effluents for our environmental agency. Lots of time spent at STP’s also and I appreciate this guy who narrates the video. He and everything around him looks so familiar and I miss it.

I build waste water plants in central Illinois. The amount of clarifiers at that plant is mind blowing. Props go out to these guys, can’t imagine what it takes to operate a plant of that size
Also if new to cooking, please when handling waste cooking oil, put it into a waste container (bunched up aluminum foil works), let it cool/solidify & chuck it into the trash. Simply dumping in your sink puts at high risk your sewer pipes clogging once cooling & solidifying. The combination of cooking oil & toilet paper does in even the craziest of sewage pipes. This coming from a water resources engineer.

Did you know its possible to get sick from tap water? and that brain eating amoebas can be in tap water? The water could be worse, but there is an outdated bare minimum so it could be better. The USA has NASA technology for filtration that is only privately used, when it could be utilized for the public.
I went to a water reclamation plant once while in HS, it was extra credit assignment. Let me tell you folks, anyone who works at these facilities deserves more respect. It was not easy to stay in any of the rooms for more than a couple minutes, except the office area. It is not a job most of us can handle.

Most water treatment plants aren't equipped to remove or treat water from pfas/micro plastics. Recently the EPA has been authorized to come after PFAS manufacturers that knowingly release it into the environment, and water municipal suppliers will have to get equipment to detect and remove 6 types of PFAS chemicals. (There's a lot more forms of PFAS chemicals but these 6 are the most widely circulating and toxic) Personaly I'm wondering how water bottle manufacturers are gonna repackage water.
If they stay in our bodies and they find them in rain then I'm sure they arent removing them anytime soon. It's already in the rain cycle and all sorts of other things.
You know they're called 'forever chemicals' for a reason right? The relative low reactivity of perfluronated compounds makes removal without more elaborate (and expensive at this scale) infrastructure impossible. Same applies for heavy metals, a simple ion-exchange resin/bed would do but again - expensive. Given we're talking public infrastructure, thats coming out of the taxpayers pocket first.
Most communities allow citizens or school students tour facilities when asked. Some even have open houses yearly for public awareness. Most people are shocked and amazed seeing what's involved with wastewater treatment.
Water becomes drinkable once it enters the soil and filters through it. The soil minerals are able to attach the contaminants like heavy metals or nitrates to their surfaces while the water goes into the groundwater. This is why we need good soils. They are ideally covered with natural vegetation because the vegetation sort of replenishes the capacity of the soil to do this.

It really depends on the wipe, generally those wipes never break down (as seen from the jar lol). I've had brands that disintegrate after sitting in the toilet water, but they suck for wiping. Just get a trash can with a lid and throw them away instead.

30 years ago I visited my towns wastewater facility with my school, they did things exactly the same back then, the only difference is that here we are not allowed to use the bio solids as fertilizer because of the high levels of heavy metals, it's kind of sad to see that now 30 years later they still haven't found a solution to that problem (but I guess it all comes down to funding, more important to give tax cuts to the 1%)

Add being in the direct flight path to Midway Airport's Runway 13C, and low-flying planes coming in for arrival every 3 minutes, and it's a great place to live!

Be careful to unferstand that Chicago has many combined sewers. That is, rainwater (aka stormwater) goes into drains that enter the sewer system. Many years ago, Chicago constructed a huge underground storage system for combined sewer overflows that occur when the sewage collection system is overwhelmed by rainwater and would BEFORE the construction of underground storage, go directly to the river. Now it slowly goes to the wastewater treatment plant. Modern development of small cities have a separate collection system for stormwater. This allows wastewater treatment plants to operate far more efficiently.

This plant is massive. TBH I’m good on the wastewater treatment. Potable water is so much easier to do plus a heck of a lot less work. We treat usually 20-30 million gallons per day at my plant and it’s pretty chill.

Wastewater sludge should be sent to landfills, not used as fertilizer. There are likely many substances including PFAS present in the sludge, I would be concerned about microplastics as well.

I am retired now and only have a decorative BOD5 bottle in my home as a reminder of the years I spent analyzing wastewater influents and effluents for our environmental agency. Lots of time spent at STP’s also and I appreciate this guy who narrates the video. He and everything around him looks so familiar and I miss it.

This reminds me of my internship era. I was assigned to evaluate industrial waste water treatment, and this video is very acurate. They didn't sugar coat about the smell 😂

I build waste water plants in central Illinois. The amount of clarifiers at that plant is mind blowing.
Props go out to these guys, can’t imagine what it takes to operate a plant of that size
Also if new to cooking, please when handling waste cooking oil, put it into a waste container (bunched up aluminum foil works), let it cool/solidify & chuck it into the trash. Simply dumping in your sink puts at high risk your sewer pipes clogging once cooling & solidifying.
The combination of cooking oil & toilet paper does in even the craziest of sewage pipes.

Did you know its possible to get sick from tap water? and that brain eating amoebas can be in tap water? The water could be worse, but there is an outdated bare minimum so it could be better. The USA has NASA technology for filtration that is only privately used, when it could be utilized for the public.
I went to a water reclamation plant once while in HS, it was extra credit assignment. Let me tell you folks, anyone who works at these facilities deserves more respect. It was not easy to stay in any of the rooms for more than a couple minutes, except the office area. It is not a job most of us can handle.

Exactly what I said. Those little savior pellets they love are ruining farmers lives and possibly damaging our health along the way. Pfas, lead other toxic forever chemicals are plentiful and now they're planting it directly into our food source...
They are not.
Most water treatment plants aren't equipped to remove or treat water from pfas/micro plastics. Recently the EPA has been authorized to come after PFAS manufacturers that knowingly release it into the environment, and water municipal suppliers will have to get equipment to detect and remove 6 types of PFAS chemicals. (There's a lot more forms of PFAS chemicals but these 6 are the most widely circulating and toxic)
Personaly I'm wondering how water bottle manufacturers are gonna repackage water.
If they stay in our bodies and they find them in rain then I'm sure they arent removing them anytime soon. It's already in the rain cycle and all sorts of other things.
You know they're called 'forever chemicals' for a reason right? The relative low reactivity of perfluronated compounds makes removal without more elaborate (and expensive at this scale) infrastructure impossible. Same applies for heavy metals, a simple ion-exchange resin/bed would do but again - expensive. Given we're talking public infrastructure, thats coming out of the taxpayers pocket first.
Most communities allow citizens or school students tour facilities when asked. Some even have open houses yearly for public awareness. Most people are shocked and amazed seeing what's involved with wastewater treatment.

Water becomes drinkable once it enters the soil and filters through it. The soil minerals are able to attach the contaminants like heavy metals or nitrates to their surfaces while the water goes into the groundwater. This is why we need good soils. They are ideally covered with natural vegetation because the vegetation sort of replenishes the capacity of the soil to do this.

Heavy metals can be extracted either using cationic exchange membranes or using reagents that make those heavy metals precipitate in the water, then they can be scooped up from the water's surface in the clarifiers. PFAs can be removed using the same exchange membranes or using activated charcoal. Source: I'm an environmental engineering student.
It really depends on the wipe, generally those wipes never break down (as seen from the jar lol). I've had brands that disintegrate after sitting in the toilet water, but they suck for wiping.
Just get a trash can with a lid and throw them away instead.

They are not flushable ! My toilet advertises flushing 8 billiard balls at once. Does not mean I am going to do it.
So thankful people are willing to work at these plants as many of us wouldn't be able to take the smell.
30 years ago I visited my towns wastewater facility with my school, they did things exactly the same back then, the only difference is that here we are not allowed to use the bio solids as fertilizer because of the high levels of heavy metals, it's kind of sad to see that now 30 years later they still haven't found a solution to that problem (but I guess it all comes down to funding, more important to give tax cuts to the 1%)

I lived in Stickney for 12 years (grew up around Stickney my whole life). We call it Stinkney for a reason. The whole village smells like $#!t after heavy rains. Add being in the direct flight path to Midway Airport's Runway 13C, and low-flying planes coming in for arrival every 3 minutes, and it's a great place to live!
It is a fascinating story of the work done by remarkable people who are rarely seen but make a great difference to the quality of life and living.

Did some plastic lining of a plant in Australia, honestly the smell isn't that bad you get use to sewer pretty easy, grease traps are way worse. Funny though i didn't see any ducks in their ponds, we use to have a bunch of ducks in the long tanks...

Be careful to unferstand that Chicago has many combined sewers. That is, rainwater (aka stormwater) goes into drains that enter the sewer system. Many years ago, Chicago constructed a huge underground storage system for combined sewer overflows that occur when the sewage collection system is overwhelmed by rainwater and would BEFORE the construction of underground storage, go directly to the river. Now it slowly goes to the wastewater treatment plant. Modern development of small cities have a separate collection system for stormwater. This allows wastewater treatment plants to operate far more efficiently.

As a union plumber starting out rodding sewers for years it's nice showing people what plumbers do to keep diseases down and your toilets flushing and basements dry.
Here in the UK when we get excessive rain the water companies just dump untreated sewage straight into the rivers and waterways.

It can be done, but it depends on some people.
This plant is massive. TBH I’m good on the wastewater treatment. Potable water is so much easier to do plus a heck of a lot less work. We treat usually 20-30 million gallons per day at my plant and it’s pretty chill.

Had a stoner moment a few months back that I think about often... when turning on your sink imagine all the work and effort it took to get you the water just to touch 6 inches of air in your sink, and then turn straight to waste just to get filtered to do it all over again..

Many years ago they stopped allowing residents to take the sludge for their own gardens. Kind'a gross when we went to get the sludge and found tomato plants growing in it.
He should be the ambassador of waste management plan.
Here in the UK we just divert sewage directly into rivers. Saves a ton of cash on infrastructure and massively supports our foreign investors.

The plant on the southeast side had giant freshwater sponges take up residence in the discharge basin where it dumps into the Grand Calumet river.
Make a similar system thatll clean those rivers in the chicago area
