Dude, these videos are amazing. I LOVE how you give the sense of real car ownership through your POV Reviews. I feel like I'm really having a day owning this car.
The Veloster N has joined the ranks of very few cars that I actually like and want to buy at this point. As odd as this comparison sounds, it gave me similar vibes to the M2 Competition I drove - It's hoonable but more importantly, it's fun 100% of the time. Considering that's what I prioritize in a car over anything else, it makes it near the top of my list.
I know your comments a year old but this exactly. I drove an m2 as a rental and then test drove the veloster n and very similar vibes despite being so very different in price and pretty much everything else. I was a die hard golf r fan until I drove one of these and decided that they were kinda boring.
It's interesting, I've owned a WRX, Focus ST, RS, and a Type R, and my favorite without a doubt was the Focus ST. The torque steer, the laggy-ish build up of the turbo, the ease of ownership - it all added up to fun to drive, loved it. My next car will be a Veloster N since everyone seems to mention the N is like the ST.
I’m now 66 years old and so I’m a little more practical in my needs but still enjoy driving and having some fun. After this horrible pandemic is over, I’d like to test drive this as a consideration of my next smile machine. 😎
I've got an fk8 type R with good mods, stock turbo and no E, but a good tune, and I love your comparison. I have a friend with an N and I say alot of the same things. ^^ the N feels like so much more of a well rounded car that is able to race and track very well and is so comfortable to drive, while the R is a monster in autocross and a missle at high speed, but rides so hard in R mode and has a sound system that needs alot of work to sound good. You killed it man, you seem like you would be fun to cruise with.
I was surprised how much I liked my Veloster R test drive. In the end I went GTI with DSG to accomodate family, but loved what Hyundai did with the Veloster, even if I didn’t get to drive the N.
You just checked all the boxes on my end of 2021 shopping list except the WRX instead of the Civic Type R. I’m sticking to about $31k or less. Your thoughts on the segment are spot on.
Just bought an Rspec and it is even less expensive with out all the adjustments and only 75HP less. It does have normal and sport mode with a big difference between them. Suspension is awesome!

I think it is the fairly simple where it slots in. It is the highest performing hot hatch besides the type-R at the track and on the street. It is more reliable(so far no issue if you get accessory pads and no trans or cooling issue like the type r) than it and more fun but not quite as livable or as fast at the limits but also much cheaper day to day. It is less of a daily than a gti, gli, or golf R but it is cheaper and/or faster than all of them(veloster N with the accessory pads has been beating the golf R on road courses). But you lose the automatic the and interior isn't as nice and the ride quality suffers.
Agreed, its the cheaper Type R with some innovative features thats slightly more hardcore than your GTI/Golf R. Hyundai timed the car perfect with the loss of Fiesta ST and Focus ST/RS, hopefully enough people buy these and keep the segment alive.
This guy is brilliant. Knowing a big rear sway bar swings the back around on a car.. the term is long in the tooth, referring to the gti, but really appreciate his reviews. And yes Hyundai bring the Elantra 4 door hatchback N over here!
With these cars, you either love them or hate them. I personally never cared about Hyundai until I recently got a 2015 R-Spec 6spd for a good price. I fell in love with it. It's different, that's for sure. The way it drives and handles. 1st gen has some minor issues that could have been made better from the factory but it's nothing super serious and it gets addressed with the 2nd gen. My next car is definitely going to be another Veloster. Hoping on getting an N with the performance package here in a year or two. It's great seeing this becoming more widespread and more reviews on it. As I think most people skip over this when they hear "hyundai" as I feel like most people are still in the same boat as I was. Associate it with a cheap and crappy type of car. But if you are willing so sacrifice a bit of interior quality for the actual interior design/layout and what the car gives you in return (in terms of performance, etc) for the price point, it is hands down the best hot hatch you can buy right now.
i got a CTR over this because it was MSRP, but if i wasn't able to this would have been an instant pick-up. it's definitely slower and not as set up for the track as the civic, but man, it has so much character, the size is perfect, and the price is just nuts.

I haven’t owned the brz but I think you would like this just as much and it would be more practical and realistic due to warranty and extra room. Also throw it into normal mode, and you got a base model Veloster with good comfort and even better MPGs
Just bought myself 1 of 5 2020 Veloster R-Spec in Sunset Orange. If you really wanna spend smartly, get the R-Spec for $24185 and put $1-2k in a decent tune and some small mods and easily get the same performance or more as the Veloster N
Three weeks ago my wife and I watched the IMSA TCR races at Road America. The N’s took first and third. Just this past weekend Mason Fillipi and Gottsacker took second in the N at Virginia International Raceway. Hyundai is crushing the circuits!
You could also compare the reliabilty according to Consumer Reports survey results, and safety scores by the IIHS. Also add the Subaru BRZ and the STI/WRX.
I have a Civic Coupe touring, nearly the same stereo as the Type R. Test drove a Veloster N yesterday. Veloster stereo system is almost as good but not quite. No tweeters and the sub is a little weaker.
Does the exhaust only sound good in n mode? Also does n mode use more gas? I’m guessing not with just the sport exhaust setting for custom? Is it recommended to use n mode in winter roads?
I've had a 17 Civic si, 13 Focus ST, 16 Fiesta ST, MK4/5 Gti. The Ford products were a lot of fun but the quality wasn't nearly as good as anything from Europe or Japan. A car developing rust after two years (both Fords) is totally unacceptable, which is a shame because I loved driving those cars. German cars have their quirks but they are build far better. The Civic had the perfect chassis and brakes for the street and the engine was phenomenal on fuel but had the personality of a kitchen appliance. Looking forward to driving a Veloster N, I like the way they look and sound and I expect the quality to be very good as well.
I'm very interested in this car. It's between this and a 2024 GTI but the price tag on the GTI is much compared to the N. So any advice or imput, I'd greatly appreaciate it.
Grab a Miata if you can deal with the impractically. I have one (2016 ND) and it's my favorite car without a doubt. I'm never going to get rid of it. I'm looking at a Veloster N as a second car for myself to actually enjoy the Miata for longer by keeping it away from Midwest winter and salt conditions.
Probably my least favorite thing about this car has to be how light the clutch is like for me it's not enough feedback with it. Now downshifting feels decent but it just doesn't feel right especially compared to my Genesis. Could just be me though...
I noticed the color temperature of your video changes noticeably; the light color of the buttons switches between blue and white several times. So in real life what's the light color of the buttons?
The light color of the Veloster N buttons is a nice lighter blue, similar to the seatbelt color. It looks really nice at night. (Source: I just picked up one of these last Friday.)
I just sold my Mk7 2016 Fiesta ST for the N. I will never knock the Fiesta. I won’t lie. I miss it at times But damn that Hyundai is so impressive! It’s straight line speed is ok but the way it takes corners is just amazing
Hey what's happening I've purchase a Hyundai veloster turbo r spec it's has a B&M short shifter it's not powerful as a veloster N now with this pandemic going it's going to be difficult to find one
Hi what's happening I've a 2020 veloster turbo r spec I changed out the Mufflers and exhaust tips it's loud enough for me and my friend bought a Hyundai veloster ultimate and he purchased a spoiler from the veloster N & he bought a Hyundai veloster N he bought a carbon fiber spoiler and I've purchased his spoiler & help me install it on my veloster turbo r spec it matches my is all black now the pandemic now they discontinued the veloster N & the r spec & the ultimate & they've the veloster N d.c.t
You forgot to mention that in the states the Veloster N comes with a 10-year 100000 mile warranty. Nice. I'd still take the Honda Civic type-r over the Veloster, don't care for the three door design, Veloster n rear seats are very tight little legroom.
I always MUTE the sound system test/segment because it just sounds like noise and doesn't translate well through compressed audio and tiny speakers in my devices. Headphones don't help much either.
Thinking about pulling the trigger on the N early this summer. My only question is I am 66 years old it will not be my daily driver. What do you think?
Great video again! Making my decisions easier yet harder at the same time. Really wondering what the GTI is missing, that the Veloster N has, that makes it less fun. Is it tendency to understeer, lose traction on acceleration and turn in? Or does the sound of the car make that much of an impact? Rear sway bar + JB4 tune + exhaust on a GTI might be my pick if that really is the case.
@@ashcosmo3854 It does. Veloster N is a very compelling package, but I just can't get over the third door and slight lack of basic creature comforts like heated seats, since I live in the North. I also don't want to deal with 19" rims, and having to switch them out for 18's right off the bat. I would have immediately bought the I30N if it was here (and if it had heated seats), but the next closest thing would be a GTI. A big benefit of the GTI is the availability of CPO. I can get a 2018 SE with less than 5k miles for around $25000, which is $4000 less than the VN. All the while with a bigger color selection. I'm not sure if I'm going to ever track it, so I would need something that dailies better. Slight modification here and there for a GTI to be a bit more aggressive is okay. I might not even JB4 it (which is reversible), so no real warranties would be voided. My real mod is getting a miata as the neighbor.
My take in three words: connectedness, grip, and sound. The GTI is an extremely well-rounded machine that balances livability, practicality, refinement, and features with driving excitement and performance. The N, while it can be a surprisingly civil daily, is just balls-to-the-wall insane overall and it's design skews heavily towards performance and driving excitement. It's steering system is simply brilliant. The limits of its grip are notable given it can sustain momentum in a way that many more expensive cars cannot. Turn-in is stupid sharp...you find that perfect turn-in point and the N is a tack-driver that immediately follows your every command. Understeer mitigation is excellent for a FWD car, driving position is fantastic, the ability to customize just about every aspect of the car's performance and electronic functions is exceptional, and the sound is bat shit crazy. From that first turn, it's very obvious that you are in a car that has been designed around driving excitement and prioritizes this above everything else. It's a very different design philosophy IMHO.
Yea I might be making a mistake in trying to mod the GTI into becoming close to a Veloster N. It's just that there really aren't that many turns where I live. It's a grid of potholes with the occasional on ramp. More research it is, but hopefully someone who has driven a mk7 GTI + RSB and a Veloster N can chime in.
@@npaul4171 Have you driven it in normal mode ? I agree the interior of the VW is nicer but the N in normal mode is close to no different than a GTI. Then you can flick it in N mode and it becomes a totally different beast. The GTI.. well.. you're just stuck with a GTI. I agree though the I30N blows the Veloster away in most liveable aspects. I can't believe they didn't give America the I30..
Several questions... Anyone... please help me with answers... Thank you ! Can you buy and put a space saver spare tire in the trunk area? Is this car as fun to drive as a Type R? (Nothing to do with speed Just the feeling) Is this car comfortable enough to take on a 300 mile plus vacation trip? Would you consider this car to be a more reliable car than the VW GTI or a BMW 230i in manual only? Has anyone checked the real world mpg when not driving like a hooligan? What color does anyone think looks best on this car?
I’d like to drive one, but I don’t think favorably. Recently many of BMWs non-M cars have been a disappointment from a performance driving standpoint and I think the 230i is at the top of that list. The Veloster N and Civic Type R are pretty hardcore hatchbacks, their performance is almost brutal when you start to push them hard, not much BMW makes these days could realistically hang on a backroad these days.
@@TheTopher thanks, I needed to hear this :) Although the 2-series (RWD) is the only driver focused car that BMW makes today, but I agree that the non-M models are just too soft.
Never say never bro speak things into existence work towards your goals and trust me everything will fall into place, speaking from experience. God bless
I love the look of the veloster N. I would buy definitely consider one if they did away with the asymmetrical doors. That bothers me more than anything. Same with Honda, their blind spot camera in the passenger mirror ruins the whole car for me.
GTI is king. MK8 will continue to be the best daily driver, and a blank canvas for every driver. you can literally pick and choose how you want to mod your GTI.
I beat my buddy's 19 sti all he time. He jumps out in front at launch but the N chases him down. As far as ride quality to the sti. The N will ride nicer in normal mode. But alot more stiffer in N mode. More room in the sti.
@@npaul4171 i drive a manual frs daily and am trying to find something more relaxing like the new camry. But always liked the veloster n looks like a joy to ride . both have their appeal
You'll need the warranty. I'm a victim of the GDi engines they build. Failed at 52,000 with full maintenance. They were quick to replace it, but I still haven't seen the car since June. Buyer beware. Hyundai/Kia build fantastic vehicles until the engine fails. I'd go for a Subaru, but I've heard they aren't much better with head gaskets. I don't know for certain how true that is, just what I've heard about newer Subarus. I can definitely confirm Kia/Hyundai engines are terrible though. Be wise my dude.
It's compelling to consider whether its competitors are actually competitors when price is factored in. The Fiesta ST was around 20,000, the Veloster N is around 30,000, and the Type R is around 40,000. In my opinion the Veloster n should be compared to cars like the Focus ST and the GTI, yet it is competitive with cars like the type R which in and of itself is impressive. I bought a Fiesta ST because it's about as much fun as you can possibly have for anywhere near that price, but I'm looking at the Veloster N and wondering if I want another car payment.
29k is a lie, around here the p.p. 275 model is 36k in Indiana and on there web page. At that price I'll go WRX STI USED OR RS USED, both can be found under 20k miles and are way better.

Has anyone gone from a brz to this? I’m seriously considering one of these. Worried I’ll miss rwd but turbo punch and the extra practicality would be nice + 2 real seats for my 2 kids!
Its different but you will love it
I own a 350Z and a 2020 N, must say it’s a lot of fun and a great daily with good warranty
If you really wanna spend smartly, get the R-Spec for $24185 and put $1-2k in a decent tune and some small mods and easily get the same performance or more as the Veloster N
not really
if i put 15k down is that a good amount to finance the rest?
I like to put down how much I would like to pay monthly with insurance in mind.
Three weeks ago my wife and I watched the IMSA TCR races at Road America. The N’s took first and third. Just this past weekend Mason Fillipi and Gottsacker took second in the N at Virginia International Raceway. Hyundai is crushing the circuits!
I JUST DROVE MY FRIENDS MANUAL (FIRST TIME) DID A CRAP TON OF RESEARCH THIS IS MY BABY! WHY CANT THEY BRING THAT FASTBACK OVER HERE TO THE STATES!!!
The Veloster N???? it is in the states...www.hyundaiusa.com/veloster-n
Space Emperor Karl, maybe he’s referring to the I30N Fastback
@@subvet3668 it's coming! we will have the elantra in N version
@@davidpaulin , I really hope so.
Hey what's going on I've bump into a person bought a veloster turbocharged N it's awesome 👌 😊❤
You could also compare the reliabilty according to Consumer Reports survey results, and safety scores by the IIHS. Also add the Subaru BRZ and the STI/WRX.
I heard people are happy with the N the type r I saw from other comments has overheating with the transmission issue. Not sure if thats true or not
How does the Veloster N audio/stereo compare with the Honda Type R?
I have a Civic Coupe touring, nearly the same stereo as the Type R. Test drove a Veloster N yesterday. Veloster stereo system is almost as good but not quite. No tweeters and the sub is a little weaker.
They should offer the H/K system in the VN, it would blow Honda's premium system out of the water.
Veloster N is $28.900 Type R is $40 for the price Veloster N also got the fun....
The N certainly isn’t lacking in personality! It acts like the Type R looks.
@@TheTopher my exact thoughts!
I'm very interested in this car. It's between this and a 2024 GTI but the price tag on the GTI is much compared to the N. So any advice or imput, I'd greatly appreaciate it.
I've been looking at new Miatas but this has peaked my interest... I may have to go test drive one
miatas are sweet, but super impractical
Grab a Miata if you can deal with the impractically. I have one (2016 ND) and it's my favorite car without a doubt. I'm never going to get rid of it.
I'm looking at a Veloster N as a second car for myself to actually enjoy the Miata for longer by keeping it away from Midwest winter and salt conditions.
Could we get your sound test tracks? I'm intrigued after hearing the first two
Love your videos. Can u test the land Rover Discovery ?
Really appreciate the review. Would you rather own and daily drive this car or the VW GTI or the Civic SI for ten years?
I miss it at times
But damn that Hyundai is so impressive! It’s straight line speed is ok but the way it takes corners is just amazing
First thing I did was put a JB4 piggyback.. it solved the straight line problem lmao
Would you say the Veloster N or Fiat 500 Abarth is more fun?
buildmorefarms100 i am curious as well
Hey what's happening I've purchase a Hyundai veloster turbo r spec it's has a B&M short shifter it's not powerful as a veloster N now with this pandemic going it's going to be difficult to find one
Even the 2019’s price has not budge and it doesn’t help that they are discontinued
@TheTopher - Who do you think wins the audio battle? Veloster N, SI, or GTI?
You forgot to mention that in the states the Veloster N comes with a 10-year 100000 mile warranty. Nice.
I'd still take the Honda Civic type-r over the Veloster, don't care for the three door design, Veloster n rear seats are very tight little legroom.
if you just get the 250hp N do you not get the different suspensions
How’s the music system? Compared to the bose system? In the mazda 3
Awesome review.
Btw, what is the title of that first track you played?
Love that car and it's lambo tail lights!
Does this thing pull as hard as something like a 2011 Subaru WRX?
Harder
TheTopher thank you sir. Watching a video is NOTHING like actually being in the car lol, I couldn’t tell at all. Good video.
I always MUTE the sound system test/segment because it just sounds like noise and doesn't translate well through compressed audio and tiny speakers in my devices. Headphones don't help much either.
I want a sporty car but i have to leave the house at 4:20am every day. I think this is a great match.
Thinking about pulling the trigger on the N early this summer. My only question is I am 66 years old it will not be my daily driver. What do you think?
69 and love my N
apparently this isn't important to anyone but me, but how is the stock sound system? I need music. Always music.
@TheTopher what would u pick :
Camaro SS or Veloster N ??
from a daily drive perspective
Is the gap in performance bigger between the Civic si and the Veloster N or between the Civic type R and the Veloster N
Civic SI and N have a bigger performance gap. That's why the N is always compared to the type R
You can't justify another car based on modifications though. The fact that you have to void warranty on another new car to match a rival says a lot.
(Nothing to do with speed Just the feeling)
Is this car comfortable enough to take on a 300 mile plus vacation trip?
Would you consider this car to be a more reliable car than the VW GTI or a BMW 230i in manual only?
Has anyone checked the real world mpg when not driving like a hooligan?
What color does anyone think looks best on this car?
Very insightful! Type R is definitely the closest competitor. How do you thing the BMW 230i compares?
I’d like to drive one, but I don’t think favorably. Recently many of BMWs non-M cars have been a disappointment from a performance driving standpoint and I think the 230i is at the top of that list. The Veloster N and Civic Type R are pretty hardcore hatchbacks, their performance is almost brutal when you start to push them hard, not much BMW makes these days could realistically hang on a backroad these days.
@@TheTopher thanks, I needed to hear this :) Although the 2-series (RWD) is the only driver focused car that BMW makes today, but I agree that the non-M models are just too soft.
What would you pick? A 2022 Veloster N or a 2022 Golf R?
Styling and character and a much better handling car, get the VN. For more practical, straight line and winter capable get the golf.
Test driving one tomorrow because of this video.
I have to watch this video because I'll never be able to afford a Veloster N and this is the only way i can "drive" one.
Never say never man learn computers. Zero college here but 10 years experience and I make almost 100k year!
Never say never bro speak things into existence work towards your goals and trust me everything will fall into place, speaking from experience. God bless
Does this have a good turning radius?
I love the look of the veloster N. I would buy definitely consider one if they did away with the asymmetrical doors. That bothers me more than anything. Same with Honda, their blind spot camera in the passenger mirror ruins the whole car for me.
Would you rather add a door or take away the 3rd? I personally like the passenger side look more than drivers
@@peej.w7598 Make a 2-door model like that new Toyota.
GTI is king. MK8 will continue to be the best daily driver, and a blank canvas for every driver. you can literally pick and choose how you want to mod your GTI.
I know it’s a little outdated, but a Volvo C30 T5 manual is a decent competitor
@6:25 old in the tooth? You mean long in the tooth.
😄 that’s the one
How does this compare to a WRX or STI?
I beat my buddy's 19 sti all he time. He jumps out in front at launch but the N chases him down. As far as ride quality to the sti. The N will ride nicer in normal mode. But alot more stiffer in N mode. More room in the sti.
It doesn't, STI ALL DAY. I have a focus ST and drove this N version and it is a joke for price comparison to the STI.
Interesting thing is that this car is not designed to compete against the R, but people are keep comparing the N and the R. Lol.
Veloster N or Toyota Camry XSE?
Camry
Camry TRD. /s Lol Veloster N hands down if you ain't got no kids.
Do you like cargo room or driving fun/engagement?
@@npaul4171 i drive a manual frs daily and am trying to find something more relaxing like the new camry. But always liked the veloster n looks like a joy to ride . both have their appeal
Camry TRD
I've been considering this for a long time, recently been trying to compare it to a GT86. Anybody have any insights?
Mini Cooper s or Mini Cooper JCW. Should be on the list. John Cooper Works.
Veloster N or BRZ performance pack with headers and a tune?
I would go for the Veloster. You can't beat their warranty.
This or a used focus rs for the same price? ive driven the veloster N but not the rs.
Royal Onion I have heard that the RS has some reliability issues? So maybe a used one would not be wise. However this is all word of mouth
i cant find the blue one in my area :(
It's compelling to consider whether its competitors are actually competitors when price is factored in.
I like ur videos ♥️
29k is a lie, around here the p.p. 275 model is 36k in Indiana and on there web page. At that price I'll go WRX STI USED OR RS USED, both can be found under 20k miles and are way better.
I went to a dealer today to check it out. Was $28,000 after dealer incentives ($30,580 sticker price).
AZ, can get these used for 19-22k with 5-15k miles. Destroys the price of a used Sti. Bought my Sti with 48k miles for 25.8k
Buy used with 5k miles on it for 25k with performance pack. Plenty of examples on auto trader
