  • #Yamuna - once the lifeline of Delhi, along whose banks the Mughals built the Red Fort and the city of Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi) - is one of the “most polluted rivers in the world”
    Recently, visuals of toxic froth floating on the surface of the Yamuna river near Delhi made their way back to social media, with experts citing different reasons behind the #pollution.

    There's a beautiful talk by Pankaj Vir Gupta titled "The Yamuna River Project" that talks about Yamuna's pollution in detail.
    The Yamuna is quite healthy, until it hit Najafgarh drain. The moment the drain dumps it's sewage into Yamuna, it's dead, there's no life anymore. It takes Baras's waters outside Itawah for the Yamuna to finally breathe some life again.

    It is so funny that government shows its authority over common citizens when they pass on rules to minimize pollution. They even penalize the violators. Why it is hard for them to do the same over industries causing pollution. The guidelines are there already. Why can't they take severe action against violators.

    • @libshastra
      @libshastra 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it's not the industry that's the problem. It's basically the citizenry.
      Yamuna's pollution comes largely from untreated waste from residential areas - colonies, posh housing societies, slums (less so from Dhobis - they do contribute but much much less). So when the Govt. proceeds to fix the problem by building STPs, the more posh citizenry then file a PIL against the govt alleging destruction of trees, STPs incubate diseases, pollutes the Yamuna (I kid you not, this last bit was 3 pages explaining of nonsense of how STPs add more pollution).
      So now we are stuck in situation where 3 out of the 9 STPs are done, 4 are stuck in courts and the remaining two are yet to be proposed. Guess what, Delhi needs another 4-5 STPs because the PIL forced reduced capacity on the 3 that were built.
