India is the world's largest country at 1.4 billion people. And of those 1.4 billion, about 450 million live in the northwest states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh. While that might be fine otherwise, these people live in a region is severely water stressed. And if India can't get its water usage under control, those same 450 million Indians will need to move somewhere else.

My late uncle was the chief water engineer for the state of Rajasthan. In the 80s, he realized that not only was there a huge water problem in the water table would run dry by the mid 21st century, but there was a huge amount of waste from leaky pipes in wealthy people’s homes that had been properly installed. He tried to start a campaign to get plumbing done up to code, and quickly got shut down by corrupt officials who were getting bribed to turn a blind eye.

Usually the most useless ppl are the ones wreaking Havock for the rest.. lack of long term vision, Honesty, and selfishness at its fullest, from the wealthy ppl to public employees... Then the rich when they see the problem getting out of control, instead of helping in fixing the problem, they just packed their luggage and move to the west, particularly the USA, or Canada, dragging those bad custom and dishonesty and of course exploitation practices and start their cycle of ignorance and bad behavior again in new lands without learning the lesson, blaming other for their mistakes and perpetuating the problem. Kudos for your uncle one of the few people that saw the issue before becoming worse and also for trying to bring a plausible solution to avoid further disaster. That is part of the reason specially in the 🇺🇸, buildings, houses, Roads etc has to be built by code, especially when there is a fire inside a house, bc if the firefighter has to use his axe to open a wall or a door, he knows by code where the electric or gas line is located to avoid getting injure or making a bigger problem..

*One of the water poor areas in IIndia is having having yearly contests to create rainwater harvesting earthworks with onsite materials. This is encouraging villages to work together to solve water problems.

Weather is certainly unpredictable. This past year has been a rainy year for northern India especially Himachel Pradesh, just north of Uttar Pradesh.Even last winter was wetter than usual. A long and heavy monsoon this summer has caused all kinds of flooding this year. The Beas river was just raging with the excess water.

I have a point with this video that I find strange. Namely, what ended the Harappan civilisation was a global cooling event, not warming. The warming will make the monsoons more intense and will probably lead to intense flooding, not drying. What India lacks is not water but rather clean water. That is, however, likely to improve as the country develops, regulations get implemented and awareness goes up.
The problem of having abundant clean water was probably what India will have. If I poo 💩 into people's reservoir, I can increase the bacterial count to an unhealthy level and render a huge volume of water no longer potable.
When I was living in a shantytown in Kowloon, Hong Kong, we kept the several water streams separate. We drank only boiled water. We washed clothes with mountain-runoff spring Phoenix Creek/Brook water. We also had city remote public water and public toilet service. We used a chamber-pot.
It's not as convenient than in the U. S. A. but we knew how to manage hygiene. The ability to be very calm when facing a water supply disruption is an advantage of my having lived in a shantytown. I knew that I could cope and also what to do. Serenity !

Climate change is of least concern in Punjab. The larger issue is government corruption and illegal divertion of water from farmers inside the state to outside.

Seems unlikely - very little of the water in the major Indian rivers actually originates in Tibet. The vast majority is rainfall on the Indian side of the Himalayas.

India has enough water according to the land and geography. I live in Delhi NCR, which is considered the most water scarce region. Ironically, I seldom faced any water issues over the last 7 years. You need better technology to utilise water properly, that's all. And India's technology is be becoming better and better every year.

Current government has done very impressive work for solving the water problem so far this year in summer we didnt get some horrible water shortage

and also for agriculture people dont directly use water from river they use canals and other systems and government started a mission in 2019 to provide proper tap water around the country has been successful so i dont think this is huge risk for india

Climate change is making monsoons stronger. Water availability in North West India is going up. Water shortage is not the issue. The issue is the need to build more dams to control the coming floods.
The fact that all major countries, including USA&China face the exact same problem. And none of us are doing anything.
The "easiest" solution is to build some reservoirs.

That is partially because much of southern California's water comes from the Colorado River, which partially runs through other states, forms part of California's border, and also runs through Mexico.

One of the biggest problems is that the vast majority live on about $3 USD a day. If there were greater wealth, invested to important contingencies, there could be greater capabilities. I live in a neighborhood in northern suburban Detroit, and have thousands of Indian families as my neighbors. I have heard time and again, how much they all love that Michigan has water mostly everywhere you look, and is surrounded by it! .....AND it's salt, and shark-free! ❤
So climate change isn't helping, but they also have a lot of very poor practices that are not helping either. So I feel for them. But they need to try to help themselves as much as possible also.

what are you on about, indians are far better off than westerners in real terms of *cost of living* . average salary in india is about $380 per month with very little taxation (no taxation == no money for infrastructure, maintenance of public spaces, etc.). 80sqm flat near where the jobs are (hyderabad) costs $10k, and the energy bill on 3 bed villa with swimming pool in same location is only $8 dollars.
its the cost of living that matters, and also job prospects, which today are far, far better for india than for uk usa, canada, australia.
and india wants to have big disparity in wages between them and the west, it gives them huge advantage, just as long as they keep the cost of housing and utilities low.

How did India get so huge in population? India and China are into the billions, like no other countries on Earth are even close! United States is the 3rd most populous country and it has more than 1 billion less people. Plus China and India are also very near the other most populous countries of Indonesia, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

This past season, severe flooding has hit much of northwest India, so the issues presented here were a problem in years past. The big issue is the reckless wastage of water in Punjab and Haryana, tapping into a dwindling ground water supply. Perhaps the rains this year would have replenished some of it.
To make more efficient use of water capture, Andrew Millison's channel has documented many local and large initiatives at capturing water in Rajasthan region of India, which have been successful. This needs ro be adopted throughout India.
As a backup, India's has constructed numerous dams and canals, with the potential to divert water away from Pakistan's rivers. In the event of a drought, the government has indictaed it would divert water into Punjab and Haryana.
This could be real issue, with a war conflict between India and Pakistan ovwr water.
Fun fact: In 1960 itself, Jawaharlal Nehruji had known that this problem would become big in the future and had suggested to setup a research wing to deal with it. He even made a committee called 'The Banerjee committee' to study the causes and potential solutions for it
But later leaders lacked Nehruji's vision and the project was quickly forgotten

Where is the most logical place that Indian people wanting to live in a less densely populated country, should go? The closest I can see is Australia, New Zealand, UAE, Saudia Arabia and Qatar. I get that a lot of them go to UK, Canada and USA, but they are quite a flight away and if you leave any family behind, quite a trek to go back and visit.
Well India is surrounded by seas and oceans on its three sides and there is lots of solar power available. Hence India can put lots of reverse osmosis plants just like isreal using solar power for water if it needs😊
Bt what about north states? If u know all west and south states actually always against sharing their resources to north states. Already South and West states pay most tax get nothing in return. So don't think both South and West states will give water to north states.

I am from the state of Punjab. Many Punjabis realise this problem and are leaving Punjab for foreign countries, particularly Canada, but also other Commonwealth nations like UK, Australia and New Zealand. They see no future in India. It's really distressing why our politicians don't focus on this problem. In a state where agriculture is the leading sector of the economy, the least they can do is to adopt sustainable agricultural practices. However, Punjab is stuck in a wheat-paddy monoculture, which has destroyed the region's biodiversity, depleted the groundwater table and created a huge stubble problem. On the top of that, copious use of pesticides is polluting the water sources and creating issues like cancer and infertility among the population. I fail to understand why government doesn't do away with paddy (a water-guzzling crop which is nowhere suitable for the environment of Punjab) to encourage diversification and solve the stubble issue. I think it's a combination of incompetence, corruption and the lack of will-power!
True , there is massive population movement underway from India to Canada at the moment. Not just Punjab but mainly .
Canada population grew by 1 million last year (2022). Problem is despite the size of the country most immigrants go to the big cities. It is not sustainable due to the lack of infrastructure .
@@hirsch4155 True. Canada is also facing problems like housing crisis and lack of infrastructure due to the influx of immigrants. However, Canada is trying to take some steps. For example, it is far easier to get a PR in a small city as compared to Vancouver and Toronto, where it's too difficult to get a PR unless you're a skilled professional.
U can't blame govt only. I have seen people waste so much water keep running pumps carelessly wasting precious ground water due to free electricity. No micro irrigation use or harvesting is done. Govt is tired of asking them to switch to millets like bajra, ragi, jowar which are waay less water intensive & nutritious.
BUT when eventually water table subsides, they see no future in India and want shift to canada. There generations have been fed by the holy land of Punjab & it can do so in the future but people are digging their own graves without realising all this.. Sad reality of today
@@parthoomphy7214 While you are correct that it is not entirely government's fault, but I believe that the major responsibility for this crisis lies with the government. They are doing empty talks of diversification and going to millets, jowar etc. without providing any monetary support or security. Why are they only providing MSPs for water intensive crops? Just like us, farmers also want some stable income and social security. Similarly with stubble burning, what is a farmer supposed to do with the stubble when he is barely making his ends meet? Stubble management machinery is costly and in-adequate. Government keeps subsidizing wrong things like water intensive crops and precious natural resources, all due to political reasons.
Population is one of the main problem. We should not deny people to have multiple chuldren, but There should be a scheme were families with one children are given some benefits so that it encourages people to have one child.

I don't know how India and China got so populous so fast. I mean, I know *technically* how, but it is hard to imagine that happening like anywhere else in the world. USA is the 3rd largest country with more than 1 billion people less, only about 300 years old and a massively immigrant-based population.

As a resident of Rajasthan, I agree with you on the water usage. People here waste water a lot, given the overuse of groundwater. We must use water consciously and smartly. We must spread awareness about water conservation, Rainwater harvesting and transform traditional agricultural practices to an environmental friendly. Water is the most precious resource and it should be kept as such. Stricter norms regarding water usage should be implemented.

A lot of the water in those rivers is runoff from glaciers in the Himalayas. Those glaciers are at risk from rising temperatures, and many are shrinking. If they go, so do the rivers.
Great progess in water security has been made in southern India due to the efforts of the Pani foundation. As far as water goes the way forward is clear. We just need to get busy and do it.

What's funnier here is that rest of India will migrate to these regions, why?? Because as you guys can observe is that Delhi-NCR is in the same region as well,So is the industrial nodes of Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor this will give rise to many townships and people eventually settling in those townships as their job is in that place.

I’m a bit surprised you limited your analysis mainly to current day India. Shouldn’t that be ignored and focus on the geographical area of the Indus region (which includes Pakistan)… e.g. be apolitical.
There are six rivers in J&K where that water goes a lot unused, fowing into the Arabian sea. Build dams, divert and refresh the Saraswathi River valley..

India can build man-made rivers to bring water from water rich states like Tamil Nadu in the south to northern states like Gujarat. This is similar to the huge infrastructure project that has also started in China where water from southern provinces is diverted to northern provinces.

Well that problem for large part of North India will be solved river linking project with large number of artificial ponds branching out from linking project. Contrary to popular believe 97 percent of water in india comes from monsoon. There will be larger water problem in tribal belt in Easter states in india than in North india

Actually, Mohenjo daro and Harappa civilizations were in current day Pakistan. Their ruins are in Pakistan's Sind and Punjab regions respectively.

Bingo! The problem is more people create more pollution, that in turn changes the climate. So in reality the more the climate changes the less people should be causing pollution. Population is the main cause of water scarcity
When one thinks of the great rivers of the world emptying in the oceans could some of these rivers be diverted to alleviate the droughts in some countries, one of the tributaries from the congo river could probably be diverted to flow north to Egypt.
You could have add the 15 Million inhabitants of Delhi right in the middle (25 Million in urban area spread on 3 States) as you just cited Faridabad and Gurgaon which are just suburbs of Delhi !

He's not talking about Mohenjo Daro and Harappa but the larger Indus Valley cities like Dholavira and Rakhighari, Port Lothal. All of which are in Haryana, Gujarat, etc. The sites on the Indian side are larger and just recently being excavated. The civilisation had spread further east than you think.

Two corrections: (1) The most overpopulated states in India are UP and Bihar, No one in India talks about them separately when talking about population and related issues, Rajasthan is added to the BIMARU(bihar, madhya pradesh, rajasthan , UP) as diseased states which are eat up southern wealth and give nothing in return, also known as Hindi Belt. Haryana and Punjab are not overpopulated, their fertility rate is on decline
(2) The Indus valley remnants are in the south, They most probably migrated to south of India, They didn't go to Ganges Valley.The so called "Dravidian" culture is probably the only "original" "Indian" culture. The North-South divide is very much there, which Indians tend to disagree.
It's not universally recognised that Indus valley civilization was inhabited by Dravidians. Also, modern Dravidians are a linguistic group, just like Indo-Aryans. When it comes to genetics, modern Indo-Aryans and Dravidians descend from both what you call "original Indians" and later migrants.
The only "original Indians" would be the Sentinelese.

North Indians lost most of cultural elements(architecture, language, music, for example) to Persian rulers.
