If you want to use this rig for animations make sure you go to the shader and set frames to 1, disable Cyclic, and enable Auto Refresh. This way the face doesn't change every frame and it only changes when you set keyframes on the location of the bone in pose mode.
Sir, i just want to say thank you so much for this comment. You saved me!
it still goes through every frame for me :(((, what other steps should I consider?
are you sure you set the frames to 1? shouldnt be possible for it to automatically change if its set to only 1 frame in the image sequence @@webdog3667
you need to set the "frames" to " 1 " as blender now plays back animated textures, whereas the offset actually offsets it. @@webdog3667
@@webdog3667 I think i found it set on image node set frames to 1 and i will not change every frame
Amazing! You're a legend for giving away the whole rig, have been so frustrated trying to learn 3D facial rigging and this 2D answer is fascinating, excited to play around!
Blender is much more unexplored than I thought 🤯
Yeah it ia more that 3d software
It blends 3D and python, hence its name :)
This is a wonderful tutorial! It simplifies a complex process into easy steps to follow. Thank you very much Shotty!
Hey so i noticed you have a red border on the thumbnail. When you watch a video, a red line is on the bottom of the thumbnail. Someone might scroll by thinking theyve already watched your video.
I was so confused, i tought i watched it already but then i saw the publishing time, and that's new video
@tenSowaXXL yeah and I do NOT want to miss anything good from SS
maybe thats the point, makes you feel familiar with the video, makes you look twice
Yeah, it’s a common mistake
TH-camrs have been doing this for years bruh. It’s so you’re likely to watch it again *because* you don’t see the red bar.
I used your previous 2D video to rig a lot of things, this update really helps, thanks!!
If you don't want to use a rig, you can make a custom property for the face object set to integer and use that as a driver for the node value. Though perhaps the object data also has a place to change the frame value for that matter?
This is exactly something i've been wanting a tutorial on for so long XD Now i wanna see someone take this and work it into a rig that can be used with VRChat!!
For those having trouble with the shrink-wrap stage, make sure to go into Edit Mode for your face plane and subdivide it a bunch.
This should give it geometry to actually wrap to
Any idea from where I can download 2d eyes?
I just used PixlrX (Free) to make some face slides with some circles (on Normal) and some squares (set to Alpha/Erase). It's not as "cool" as hand drawn eyes but you can get away with a surprising amount with just 2D shapes. I'd highly recommend giving it a go 🦊👍@@pixel__lord
same question is mine
Tysm!
W video. it explained so many questions other tutorials have left unexplained. i Love your teaching style. thank you so much!
Once again! Thank you very much for this tutorial! You have made it really clear and easy to understand.
That's a great way of doing it. I've seen other ways, but none that give this ease of animating.
Following directly, explanation is so clear
I'm a complete newbie to Blender here and just wanted to thank you for your tutorial. It's really helpful all the time.
😊
Any idea from where I can download 2d eyes?
ive learned so much from you since yr first 2D facial rig in 2020, thank u again
Super helpful! Thank You!!
I recently got that old shapekey GUI slider driver addon working on 3.0. It works well if you copy the driver off the shapekey into the respective texture's frame offset, albeit without the needed GUI polish obviously
Awesome! I remember asking around to see if anyone knew how to set up a Cory Carson face. This is beautiful!
This is sick! Thanks for sharing
WOW, this is something new for me in blender! I will try ^^ Thanks
just when i think i learn alot about blender in a month, this man comes out with a new vid
Thanks for the tutorial and files to play with and explore. Just last night I put on Nick Jr for my 2 year old niece, and saw some very similar face animations on 3D characters. I was wondering how to do such a thing, then this shows up in my recommendations. Cheers. Happy to subscribe to your awesome channel.
That's what im looking for! Thank you, it's like Joystick and Slider in After Effect
WOW! very nice and clean tutorial..straight to topic. You have earned by subscription ❤❤❤
Amazing tutorial, thank you!
One thing you forgot to mention is to put number 1 on the frames box node, because in other wise the sequence repeats all the time when we play,.
hoooly crap im so happy that i looked through this videos comments.
you're a life saver thank you
@@dvd-b5676
Love it, thank you! How do you animate with it on the time line without it cycling through all the images? Cheers.
I would love a tutorial on how to achieve the texture in that first animation! THe clay-looking one that also animates
This is amazing!!! Is there anyway to change the scale of the eyes without affecting the scale of the mouth?
Nice!!!!! Is there a way to have the face plane parented to bones? I have an armature on my model, but that face rig doesn't stay attached like you'd expect.
the video helped me thank u bro
In case anyone was stumped for a bit like I was, after importing the images, if you have a purple square just move forward a frame on your timeline and it should then be your first set of eyes!
Ty so much!
My gosh, saved my life 🙏🦊
Where do you get the rig?
Thank you
Ur a crafty asset to the community 😊
Few problems I ran into, and how I fixed them: 1. When I uploaded my files, it created more than one plane. Make sure all your files have the same name and are in numeric order. Also, I'm not sure why, but if I selected files that were the same dimensions, all the files in the folder would be in the plane, even if I did not select them. 2. The bone was not changing the offset value of the face. I had to change the up/down value of the bone to something other than 0, then it worked perfectly. Hope this helps!
Thank You!
i need to rename the image to like 001, 007, 010 and so on
Thanks a lot! Can you import these animations to unity or you need to adjust something?
when i import it it does all the images at once how do I fix this?
same
Incase you want to duplicate the rig to multible characters, you need make the face material a single-user copy (the number right to the material name) and also the image sequences. And don't forget to replace the new bone name for each rig in the python expression.
How to download this rig bro please help 😅
Thank you!
nice work. how can animators work in solid view to increase scene optimisation? blender does not update shader nodes in solid mode
Where do u guy your facial images from? I assume from the same website since they are the same thickness and art style
youre the best dude. i love you man. thank you for this information!
Maybe I'm not seeing it but you said you included the assets and rig in the description and I can't see it? All I see is the links to the vfx pack and the crafty assets pack
Am i missing the link of where to get the rig?
@SouthernShotty Is there a way to edit any of the images independently? When i try to scale only one image it ends up also scaling all the rest. Help would be greatly appreciated 🐌
Hey SouthernShotty I just wanted to ask but in murder drones with how they change the faces for example into words or the murder x faces then do they just use a whole bunch of sprites and put it together? Could you basically just attempt to tell me your guess on how they went about it?
hello, what do i do if i want these facial rigs for a duplicate character? the facial expressions are linked for all characters how do i separate them?
The real question is why there is no value input for that shader node… but I guess you’d still need a driver if you wanted a controller in the viewport.
how do I switch between procedural patterns or 2 different image sequences
Is it possible to achieve this for a 3d face rig, switch to premade face models? (for instance a 3d open eye model and a separate closed eye model)
My image sequence isn't updating when I move the bone in pose mode, but only in object mode, any idea why? Great tutorial anyway!
Having the same issue. I am using Blender 4.0 instead of 3.6 so it might work differently in the newer version.
does it matter what size the png should be for the eyes? I imagine it would probably depend on the model
Where is the download for this rig please ?
So I own the crafty asset pack but dont see the facial rig anywhere to be found? Only see textures models and particles...
So how can i pack them into blend ? When I use image sequence and press pack resouces, I am seeing that no new files added and i am not able to pack them into blend hope you will reply
Just a question, if I have eyes and mouth int he same texture will that affect it in any shape or form?
where to find this face rig in cartf asset pack
Another quick question is how to attatche the face rig itselff to an exisiting armature?
thank you so much for the files,
i cant get it to work when i select all the images to import it makes multiple planes for each image it doesn't make a image sequence
Same here and I'm raging over it :/
@@jeremymarugg8627 @PaperBagManReal I had the same issue. I think you need to re-name your images. I had initially called them "image1" "image2"... but it didn't work, so I re-named them "image-001" "image-002" and it's working now. hope this helps !
Whenever i set the offset to 0 it makes the entire material pink when that isnt in the files i chose, is there any way to fix this?
any tutorial in how to make this for Unreal Engine 5? To make our character change expression if he attacks for example
magnificent, this is wonderful, thanks a lot for sharing all this information.
So with this method, we can make vtubers with mocap that triggers bone based sprite drivers?
how do i make it where freestyle does not affect the image texture because it marks the edges for some reason
amazing tutorial! I think you forgot to include the link to the face rig though
do you know how? im at that stage, and i thought grouping the face rig and the image planes together would work, and at this point im not sure
Do I know how to what? @@webdog3667
If your image going to purple in every changing offset just make sure to name it same all and just put numbers in the back
how do i make the facial rigs stays where the face is? without moving the image and redoing the shrinkwrap modifier. im new to blender so i don't know much
The Y axys doesn’t update on my pc, why is that and how to fix it?
Any chance you'd know how to get this sprig to function in unity?
where can i download the rig?
my driver isnt working and ive followed all the steps? any advice on what to do ?
Will this technique work if imported into a game engine like Unity? I have some characters I want to put 2D faces on, but a lot of character animation breaks when imported into a game engine- not sure how to avoid re-animating full lip sync.
this will works only for blender, but there are a similar way to do this in unity with the same face sheet that you use in blender, so you can work in blender and then in unity re do it
Where are the images?
When i attatch it to my model i cant apply rig anymore and when i dont the face wont movw how do i fix it ?
This is really frustrating... The faces keep changing constantly in the timeline and I can't animate it without them jumping all over the place. I set the interpolation mode to constant for the face and mouth but the cyclic and auto refresh keep changing the faces. Can someone please help me understand where I went horribly wrong? Also where is the free rig? I can't find it :(
i'm having this issue too, anyone got solutions?
@outatime9449 I even got his rig from gum road but it has the same problem 😭
I'm trying to figure this out as well 🤷♂️ it's probably something simple but I can't find it.
I'll try again today but it is really weird how it seems the frames are the real drivers instead of the bone
Yes, it's using the y position data of the bone, but the frames also?
Can someone please tell me how can you animate this with out it cycling through whatever is in-between
Thanks for tutorial!
But how to animate this by keyframes?
The pickers of it just move by themselves((((
I'd suggest playing with the thumbnail more - at the first glance it seems as if we've already watched the video :)
What version is this?
helpppp, it isnt working in my character. with a play button on. it keeps switching textures. i have also unchecked the cyclic option but it is still happening
the tutorial is really good but it doesnt work in pose mode?
Do you know how can I get this faces work on unity?
Have you experienced this not working when appending the character to a new project?
Every time i press play on the animation the eyes begin flashing every frame, any help?
I'm going to seem like the thickest person ever - but how did you get the shader editor to come to the side like that?? You just swipe it in but that doesn't seem to be there on mine so maybe you have a setting I don't know about? I'd rather follow along exactly how you've got it instead of keep switching to the shading window. So does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? ;_;
Omg I just solved it I'm such an idiot
idk wht when i rename it and i put the new name in the path it doesnt work, even if i copied it
you have video like this? but image plane + grease pencil, got problem on overlapping lines doin it, Thank in advance !
u found a solution !!!!!!!! im stuck
I can't find the download link. I would be even willing to pay for it. Can someone please help me to!
Hey! Weird thing is happening, when I import the images as planes with the "image sequence" checked it imports all images minus the first one i selected in the folder side by side as a "single image", and just the first one as a "sequence", but when I play with the offset menu the other images aren't there. :(
resolved: The name of the file matters, and needed to be numbered.
I imported images as plane for mouth,I thought two plane overlapping can make a whole expression. But it semms like I can't edit mouth plane alone, I don't konw why.Can anyone help me plz?
The way Blender change the drivers is a bit like the way you do in Python!
8:48 plz make tutorial how to make those rigs
I'm sorry but if i move the Eyes the mouth changes together
For some reason the plane is pink and it loads many planes even when I put animation sequence
hmm if I import as plane and image sequence, it just places them next to each other, and the shader does not have the image sequence setting, if I change it to that it turns the image purple and when i shuffle frames nothing happens. This is on Windows in 3.6
ah the naming was incorect, I named it eye_left_001 , eye_right_002 but they should all me the same name except the number. So: eye_001 , eye_002
how did you import it as animate image sequence? running into the same problem with purple textures atm, i almso renamed to: Face_01, Face_02....Face_10
You kinda skipped over the part on how to join the controlling thingy to the face. Also for some reason, the controlling triangle thing is only visible in the front view.
Hey, I'm trying to use this function for two separate characters. Shift+D on character 1 doesn't work as bone 1 and bone 2 changes both character's faces. I've tried to import the faces a second time and link it up to the second character but it impact the first one still. Any recommendations for how I can make this work? thanks!
I think you have to change the bone name and the name that the driver is looking for?
When I'm in pose mode the rig doesn't seem to do anything while I'm moving the bone. anyone else with the same problem I'm using Blender 4..0
This is great but I've ran into an issue with he shrink-wrap method! When moving the head via a weighted rig control the shrink wrap doesn't move with face anymore, Im thinking maybe a vertex group might fix this? Any suggestions would be great thanks!
I had the same problem, the solution I used was to parent the FaceRig to my current character rig. When I did that all the vertex groups for my character rig became available and I could assign the vertices of the image plane to my head vertex group. I also had to apply the shrink wrap modifier. Hopefully this helps.
@@ryanh430 Great thanks so much! I'll give this a try.
@@okeyjay If you add an armature constraint to the plane with the shrinkwrap modifier on it and set the constraint to the bone in your characters head it should stick in place. Just figured this out for myself took forever haha. But yeah go to constraints, add an armature constraint, pick the bone in your characters head and it should stick even when your animate your character in pose mode
@@sacoboyscinema Thanks so much saco! Seems like a good solution.
@@sacoboyscinema My dude, you are a lifesaver! It just wouldn't stick to the armature no matter what - until this helped. ♥ I already spent so much time trying to make this animation work in Godot, and now this kept happening. 😂
