Will be doing an update video from this! @everyone what am I doing now, am I still teaching, are there still issues, will be answered. ❤
I’m so glad I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. The last great generation before technology. I pity these kids and young adults. They have no idea how great it was to grow up playing outside and using our imaginations to find things to do. We could ride our bikes without shoes and helmets we climbed on rusty metal jungle gyms. We spent the summer combing through the woods and orange groves to find soda bottles so we could turn them in for .10 cents each to buy candy. We got in trouble at school for passing notes and chewing gum. Social media has destroyed our youth.
The 2000s were fine tbh.
We were still riding our bikes, jumping on the trampoline, swimming in pools and busy being kids during our summers. The video games are honestly a great way to bond. Tech was there, but it wasn't ubiquitous like today. I really think it was a sweet spot, but it has gone WAY too far
I loved passing notes. It was busy-body work for me. I was a ugly little boy so I didn't get to many passed to me.
As a 20 something zoomer, I can confirm these activities do sound like something I would've enjoyed.
2000's kids grew up with the belt😂
I hear you. Unfortunately I’m a 25 year middle school teacher and there is no way I can leave the profession for at least five more years.
Why is that?
I’m year 21 and need to work another 13 years to be able to draw 1800 a month retirement. Not going to do it. Will leave after this year
This is the sign to break your contract mid year
@@Brainjoy01 As long as I give 30 days notice, I’m good. They can’t have the state pull my certification.
However, I’m at the age where is doesn’t make sense for me to find a new district to work. I’ve been there for 25 years and there is nowhere nearby which would pay me anywhere close to what I’m making.
I’m a few years away from being eligible for a full pension so I’ll just grin and bear it.
@@cynthiaziegler6558 Retire at 34 and get $1,800 per month? Wow. You could do that find a new position at just 34 and end up with a second pension.
Speaking as a 3rd, 4th, 5th grade 35 year retired elementary teacher, I could understand why people are quitting teaching!
You will never know the pressure a teacher gets:
2 parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles, cousins, neighbors, friends, school authorities, etc.
If you are teaching in a suburban school, parents are educated and are completely bias about what their kids are learning.
The pressure is horrendous and parents are easily disturbed by classroom happenings.
Teaching is almost like a religious vocation because teachers grow to feel their students are their actual children.
I did not leave teaching, but my teaching and all the attention I devoted to my students played a part in my divorce (18 year marriage).
The music is distracting for the whole time, maybe just the beginning and ens
Lots of people feel "burn out" about their job regardless of what they do. There used to be a saying "no body likes their job." I've never had a job that wasn't stressful, cause anxiety and many other health issues. Actually, working at one of my jobs is what caused me to become disabled. It caused permanent damage to my brachial plexus. That resulted in six to seven years of untreated nerve, vein and compression of my main artery. That compression eventually ended up causing nerve damage in my neck, chest, shoulder, hand, arm, upper and mid back. Now I'm applying for disability, not because this is what I desire. Is rather work because I'd rather be independent financially. Plus, if you work, you're going to make more money than what disability pays which is only $900 a month. The reality is there are no employers I can find that can or are willing to accommodate to my restrictions and see my restrictions as an unreasonable ask. I mean, my entire right upper half of my body doesn't work. It takes me 4 to 6 hours to make coffee, brush my teeth and take a shower. I'm just saying don't discount people that are actually disabled and need disability because you know some people that just want to sit at home all day. I'm wondering about the reasons why the issues you're describing are happening. My parents never spanked me, but they did teach me about establishing my independencey, being responsible including taking responsibility for my actions. I'm pretty sure I'm much older than you at that. Much of what's being said sounds very anecdotal. I'm inclined to agree with the notion that social media has created some big problems all over society. I would agree that parents not teaching their children accountability has something to do with it. Spanking and beating your children, though, is not the only way to teach that. What it's sounding like to me is society as a whole seems to be experiencing an existential crisis. Personally I've never had a job where I've been able to come home and say "wow what a great easy day" and I never complained about it because that's what my expectations of work was. It's work, it's not supposed to be fun. You do it to make money to survive and get entertainment and other resources. That's just what you have to do. We also need to do it because that's what makes society go. In order to get those resources we need to do the jobs we do to have them. People can be passionate about what they do for a living. Anyone who says they love their job, of they don't mean they have passion for what they do, then they're lying and just saying what they think people want to hear. To avoid this existential crisis, that seriously everyone is feeling. Then employers do need to a better job at making work more tolerable. It's not just about improving wages, they need to stop consolidating more and more responsibility and work loads onto fewer and fewer workers. That creates burn out very fast regardless of what the person makes and eventually turns into an impossible task. People need better work hours for work life balance. It's very depressing for anyone of their entire waking life is spent on work leaving no time for friends, family, loved ones and entertainment; we're social creatures. We're not evolved to be in totally stressful situations 12 hours a day 6 days a week. We're also not evolved to do hard physical labor 12 hours a day 6 days a week (which is what I did and it broke my body). No physical trainer is going to tell you to work out power lifting weights 12 hours a day 6 days week; that's not healthy. We need time to rest and sleep, this is so important our health rapidly deteriorates without it. That's hard to do when you work 12 hours a day and 6 days a week. When I did this I literally only had maybe 1 to 2 hours to take a shower and eat before having to go to bed and wake up only 6 to 7 hours later and repeat the work day; not healthy. Employers need to stop acting like we need to live and breathe our job/employer; that's ridiculous. What we do off the clock is seriously none of their business. A person's employer is not their "family" as I've heard it put at times. What a way to fall into an existential crisis then not being able to define one's self as an individual then basically being forced to feel as though they're part of some collective based around a brand or job title. Even doctors have hobbies that define them beyond medical science or being a doctor. It's pretty dark and dismal or bleak when it feels like the only reason we're even allowed to procreate is so we can create more employees. The subjective meaning to life kind of falls into the abyss of nihilism at that point. There are way more examples I could give of this, but this rant has gone on long enough. Thanks to social media one thing people really hate doing is reading; especially if it's more than one sentence.
Hi Jonny! Love your video, watched it all and I agree with everything. It's hard to say and it feels like as a teacher you are blacklisted if you say it, but the system is in really deep trouble and is totally and utterly broken. No one wants to be a teacher anymore, it has turned into a profession that is a culture of fear of parents, students and admin. I felt like I was going to get into trouble every single day, just trying to teach and do my job yet the students I taught could do whatever they wanted and say whatever they wanted to me.
I know in the US there is the added stress of your classroom getting gunned down which I can imagine is even more stressful. But even as a UK teacher, I did not feel safe. I've had things thrown at me, I've had personal property damaged/stolen and I've felt physically and psychologically threatened by some students. I felt like I wasn't allowed to speak up for myself and felt discouraged from reporting any of this. It's abuse and it is against health and safety laws yet nothing can be done about it because they are 'just children'.
Senior leadership who are supposed to be managing their school are clueless about what their teachers need and want. The elephant in the room is behaviour and lack of student achievement and focus in the classroom. There are very few schools in the western world now that actually hold students accountable for behaviour and punish them accordingly. There is no support. Teachers are no longer trusted and treated as professionals. Parents and admin are suspicious of us.
Thing is, what incentive is there for students behave and to do good nowadays when as you say, people just want to sit at home and get paid for doing nothing? Or not do not a lot for their money. Lockdowns and the current way that society functions has taught children that hard work doesn't pay. They think its funny to disrespect their teachers, undermine them and derail lessons at every opportunity because they have no respect for their parents or anyone. They think they know everything because they can look it up on a phone.
Something has to give as the turnover rate is HUGE in teaching. 10 years ago, 50% left in first 5 years. It's now 50% in first 3 years. We are not paid enough and as you have said it is leading to severe mental health problems. I'm also just finished with 2 years of teaching and feel the exact same way as you. I feel like there's something wrong with me and my ability, and feel a lot of anxiety because of the bullying and gaslighting I've experienced in the buildings I've worked in.
I really appreciate you taking the time to respond with your experience! And yes, I 100% agree that this field of work is falling apart day by day. Something needs to be done or I can seeing society turning sideways. Right now I’m still teaching in my third year, but I still have the same feeling as last year. I’m uncertain as what I’m going to be doing, but I do know that I’m not going to stay long in this career if nothing changes and changes soon. Again, appreciate your feedback

Hang on in there and don't give up on teaching until you have moved around a bit. This is my third school in three years, its in a much more affluent area and better attainment so I am hoping there won't be as many behaviour problems but I'm not expecting it to be perfect.
I have put too much time to give up now. I would ideally like to stay in the profession for about 1/3 of my career and then move onto something else. But if things don't change and I don't find it better, I don't know if I can make it even 5 years.
Getting on with your coworkers is another big issue for me. Some teachers are lovely but others you really need to watch for backstabbing and gaslighting. I'm here to teach and do my job - I don't care how amazing someone else thinks they are, but we all have a teaching diploma and are working together, not in competition.
I’ve taught for 2 years. This year I’m trying out subbing for hopefully less stress with not having to grade or interact with parents. I’m still nervous about behaviors.
Dont ever become a teacher
Where I live, they shortened summer to two months. Also, we don't get paid for summer. Our checks just get spread out. So summer is only "paid" if you opt in. 😅 Also, there is already tons of money in schools. It just goes to the wrong people! 😢
@@youresoquiet totally agree with that! Those who need the extra money/resources aren’t the ones receiving it.
Having a combined 5/6 & 7/8 in one classroom is also a red flag.... I wish schools & admins would step up on that sort of thing (& everything else!)
I totally agree! Having combined grades is a decent reasoning why there’s so much behavior issues. Especially 5th as they’re not mature enough for middle school yet!
Some kids get behind (for one reason or another). As a result, tutoring is required. Part of furthering education, is discovering what the student knows already. From that point, the learning process can be begin. The concept, is to prepare a student to become a productive member of society. Their time to reach this point is fast approaching and they don't know it. My unconventional approach is to share entrepreneurial audios, then, discuss the mindset of those who can think and decide for themselves. The time to accomplish this is extremely limited. One can only plant thoughts and ideas into fertile minds, present philosophical questions that might cause a student to use the brain they've been given. The world is filled with opportunity of every kind. Self improvement is the very most basic level of learning and where understanding begins, which is why an exercise regime is the first 20 minutes of each class. Wanting to exercise, wanting to improve, wanting to become better, I think, is key. Incremental bites are easiest to digest. 10 minutes daily of reading, spelling and math assignments totals a 1/2 hour, 5 days a week, which can be practiced for a life time in 10 minute increments. It's about becoming better, or it's about resisting personal growth. Anyone who wants to stay where they are, is free to do so. I may be unable to change the world, but I can play my part during the brief segment of time I'm given. 🙂
Can I work where you are? We don't even get 2 months off (now add back in PD days and "optional" summer work, and it is even less). Days off at Christmas and Summer are definitely perks of the job, but the "3 months off" cliche is annoying and at least for me, untrue.
haha I don't know if you would want that!
Always remember why you went into teaching -- for the benefits and secure pension. If it was for any other reason, there's your problem. They don't call retirement the golden years for nothing.
That is so... true! A lot of people don't realize what actually goes into teaching and what teachers have to deal with.
Teaching is a ridiculous job for the simple reason that it is not possible for the teacher to learn anything for the kids if they have no intellectual curiosity. So it is an exercise in futility. The smart kids do their own reading to a very great extent. The dullards, or in other words the bottom two/thirds won’t learn anything anyway. Academic training by subject content should be reserved only for the smarter kids. The stupid kids should only get the 3 Rs plus manual arts training to enter the trades. You can’t fix stupid. I quit teaching after 7 years in 1988. Good riddance. Always vote no on school levies. The current system cannot be fixed so it needs to be put to sleep like a bad dog.
HOW will adding more money fix the problem? Answer: It won't until the value of education is again a driver of PARENTS kicking their little demon spawn in the nether quarters. If you want education to improve, STOP FUNDING BROODMARES.
Hahahahhaha 😂😂😂😂 that's accurate. I'm a teacher and I'm done with these disrespectful little children
No to the background music!
Agreed! Ruins the video
Agreed. It’s a serious topic and doesn’t need music. It’s kinda distracting. I sure do appreciate him speaking out about this though.
thank you for the opinions! I will take them into account when I do another video
Thank you
Your Welcome
Dang, you had to prep for and teach FOUR grade levels!? No wonder you quit! That’s nuts!
I stuck it out for another year to them be let go by a new principal, I just posted a video about it! And yes, 4 grades, two different subjects being math and social studies, while also running data reports on the students monthly tests.

Not bare with me....bear.
This is why I homeschool.
At this point just abolish public schools
The problem is how public schools are administered, not the idea of public schools themselves. Let the actual active teachers run their own schools and public schools will recover.
As a private school, it's not that much better
@@DidartieI was coming here to post this! Yes.
And charter schools arent much better but the parents care a little more than the ones in public.
You need a car wash
Yes I need a car wash, as I’ll do a car wash rant!
If our public schools were ran like private schools our children would benefit greatly.
No, belive me not. Prívate school treat them children as clients, they pay and feel entlited to pass.

Lol tell me you aren't a teacher without telling me 😂
Seems to me only male teachers are leaving teaching. Due to society breakdown and unions.
Not true~ many females are quiting too... I know several that have quite recently and I certainly can't blame them.
Anyone who awakens tge Matrix...leave!!! Yes lots of women too....they're just not talking as much about it....they ball up in teachers' lounge and cry!!
Not true
It does seem like the majority of our teachers leaving the profession are men. Which is really sad, because I don't think there were a lot of male teachers to begin with (at least not in H.S. and college education courses).
Ridiculous statement. Source: male teacher.
