ROOF RACKS - YAKIMA BASELINE vs RHINO RACK

  • I bought my Rhino Rack Vortex 2500 RS roof rack when I was headed on a road trip and needed more cargo space, but didn't have room to park my trailer. I bought my Yakima Baseline rack for a project that didn't quite work out as planned. I find myself in the unusual position of being able to review two roof racks on the same car in the same video. Tell me what you think.

    I have heard that those clamp roof racks do damage to the car there pretty bad. Maybe i heard them for knockoff brands but i want to follow up. Any feedback?

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect that they can damage a roof if the clamps are overtightened. The RhinoRack comes with an L-handled wrench that bends when the appropriate torque is reached. That's good, but doesn't stop anyone from tightening "just a little more." Yakima comes with a torque key that releases with a "click," making it impossible to overtighten if the Yakima tool is used. Still, I'd be concerned with some of today's cars that have plastic roof portions around the sunroof. Makes me glad that my roof is all steel. :-) Thanks for visiting.

    Hi, I know this has nothing to do with Thule but I'm about to purchase cross bars for my car, a 2019 Kia Rio hatchback and I'm currently down to 2 options, the Thule WingBar Evo with the Thule Evo Clamp or the Yakima JetStream with the Yakima BaseLine towers, I did not find a video comparing these 2 like you did with Yakima and Rhino Rack but I figured you could give me an advise based on your experience with the Yakima bars

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I cannot give you an experienced recommendation. Between those two racks, and assuming you currently have no accessories from either company, I'd get Yakima if American-made is important or Thule if European styling matters. I'm sure either rack is a good purchase. With that said, I think the lower profile of my Rhino Rack is quieter than Yakima... possibly quieter than Thule, too. Thanks for visiting.

      @@StealthGTI thank you very much, the reason I was between those two is because I got them used and both were $150 dollars, I ended up getting the Yakima system with the jetstream bars and baseline towers, the car that had them and mine shares the same base clips for the front doors so I just had to buy the ones for the back doors, o just got then delivered yesterday and I installed the bars last night, I don't mind the noise they make and I do like the fact that the are higher because the only reason I got them was because I bought 2 kayaks and will be transporting them at least once a week.

    Hello. I was very close on buying the Roc25 version but then saw on another website them having the Vortec 2500 in stock. Any preference on which you would get? I noticed you mentioned the Roc25 might be slightly more efficient.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Although I haven't seen one in person, I think the ROC25 is a better design. I suspect the mechanics of it are identical to the 2500; just small details about the ROC25 make it better. I'd buy the ROC25 unless you find the 2500 for substantially less. Thanks for visiting.

    The Yakama will be louder without a fairing because it sits a little higher. If you install the fairing on the Yakima then the buffering sounds went away almost completely completely on my Ford Fusion. As far as the height difference that height does come in handy with skis so if the skis are mounted bottoms together the bindings will clear the roof.

    Still enjoying my 2016 GTI with only 36000 miles. Such a fun car to drive and does most things well. Just wanted your opinion on premium gas. I always use 93 octane, Is this necessary? Also, I am in the market for new tires. I live in STL, MO. We have snow and ice but not too much. The tires that came with the car hold the road quite well but maybe there is something better and that works ok in snow? Love your channel, makes me feel smart for purchasing this car as I have yet to have any problems, simply a joy to drive.

      Premium fuel is not required on a stock car, so long as you're using Top Tier suppliers. Premium fuel also yields more power. My car is tuned; so, premium is a must. Thanks for visiting.

    how wide are your cross bars and how high do they sit? Could I open my sunroof? You think?

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for writing, Rickey! My Yakima crossbars are 50 inches wide and sit approximately 3.25-3.5 inches above the roof, which I think is just a little higher than the factory bars. There's plenty of of room to open the sunroof. Even my much lower RhinoRack bars clear an open sunroof. Take Care!

    I honestly have so much road noise inside my GTI, that I cannot discern (easily) the noise from my Yakima jet stream rack. Have you added sound dampening to your GTI?

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not added sound dampening. I have it on hand, but haven't installed anything. Now that I have a louder exhaust, I'm motivated to dampen the hatchback and trunk area, at the very least. Anyway, none of that will reduce noise from the roof. In fact, it may make it easier to hear that noise since the exhaust/tire noise I'd target will be reduced. More to your report, are you saying that you cannot hear the difference between "no rack" and "rack" at 70 mph? I hear a clear difference. It almost sounds like my Rhino Rack with a cargo box mounted, albeit not quite that loud. HAHA! Thanks for visiting.

    10:30 more width capacity on Yakima, but overhang can be a head hazard! ⛑

    • @NoZenith
      @NoZenith 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point, I have been curious how hazardous they are as I have yet to be around a GTI with more than the flush bars, usually the stock VW ones. I want the multi-functionality to be able to go get plywood or put a bike rack next to a 14-foot canoe upside down on my roof so I'm seriously shopping

    • @bthemedia
      @bthemedia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NoZenith I only found the VW flush mount in silver and I wanted black, so I got the Yakima medium width. Very rare, but have hit my head... also have not needed to mount more than a cargo box.

      I have the 50-inch bar on my Yakima rack. It seems to be a good length, perhaps because the bar sits farther forward on the roof. Who knows? A longer bar would surely be a head-banger.

    Why not try to take a hair dryer or heat gun to the deformed T bolt strip. Doesn’t seem like that much work. For the Yakima jetstream.

    • @StealthGTI

    What size are the T-bolts for the rhino bars ?

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a 3/8" bolt. But that's not all there is about the bolt. It has a flat face that's 3/4"x3/4". I use two t-bolts, depending on my need: This bolt is shorter = www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/Yakima/Y8880184.html; this bolt is longer - www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/Yakima/8860061.html. Anyone have water leak issues with rhino rack?

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No leaks. I don't leave my racks mounted long enough for the door seals to take-on a new shape. I rack-up when I need it, remove them when I don't, and my seals return normal very soon afterwards. I'm about to take the rack on a 7000-mile journey. The seals may take a little longer to recover after such a long drive, perhaps resulting in a temporary wind noise at the door, but I don't expect any leaks. Thanks for visiting.

  • @4GuitarTrance

    I personally like the looks/placement of the Rhino rack better... simply for aesthetics reasons, for what it's worth.
    Check around... there are some companies I've seen around from time-to-time that make deflectors that mount in front of 3rd-party roof racks that supposedly stop some noise created by roof racks by deflecting air above and over the racks. Plus they look pretty "sporty" to boot. They also kinda' match the side window deflectors, looks-wise. I have no idea whether they still make them or make them for your specific vehicle.
    I remember seeing a Honda Fit a few years that had racks and had the deflector/shield in front of the roof rack. Looked really nice.... but don't know how well they muffle/deflect the noise.
    Maybe worth checking out. Yes? No? %-\

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the Rhino Rack better, too. As for a fairing, I simply don't think it's necessary, especially if I have something mounted, be it a cargo box or bicycles. Once cargo is mounted, no fairing is going to stop the cargo from making its own noise. Very seldom do I mount crossbars without cargo. I'm not into fashion statements. Function > Form. ;-) I appreciate the time you've spent watching several of my videos today. Feel free to stick around. Take Care!
