  • I bought this Rhino Rack Vortex 2500 RS nearly three years ago due to its low profile, flush design, and satin black finish. It's been great. However, I'm looking to add another rack to my collection. With a second rack on order, I figured I'd do a review so that I could then compare it to the next rack. BTW, this rack has been superseded by the ROC25.

Oddly enough, I may be moving in a few years. I hate to give up my new shed, but I guess I can drop another one at the new place.

    My friend is getting rid of her roof basket and a rhino-rack with towers made for a Subaru Crosstrek, I’d love to buy it for my GTI & find compatible Mk7 “3-Door” rhino-rack towers but no luck. I’m assuming 5-door parts like yours aren’t compatible with 3-doors, or Frankenstein’ing Thule towers to rhino-rack crossbars would be weird?

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for visiting! VW offers OEM racks for 3-door cars. See them at parts.vw.com/p/Volkswagen_2015_Golf/Base-Carrier-Bars--2-door/53175566/5G3071126.html. The aftermarket companies either didn't like their fitment or didn't expect to sell enough to justify the R&D to create them. Total speculation on my part, though. Good Luck with your search!

    I’m looking for something that can support a 14’ fiberglass canoe (no-name brand from the late 80s). It weighs about 150 lbs. Any suggestions? It doesn’t need to be a permanent mount or anything. I might tote it twice to four times a year.
    I have a Toyota Venza and I love it. I did buy a trailer hitch based on your thoughts regarding your trailer. Still looking for a used, small utility trailer.
    Started following you because my son just bought himself a 2020 GTI and he was looking for traveling storage space options.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rack will certainly handle 150 lbs. However, I'm not sure about the wisdom behind putting a 14-foot object of any kind on a rack with only 28 inches of crossbar spread. If you do it, make sure the ends of the canoe are tied-off to the car at the ends. I've seen people remove a bolt from the fender under the hood, place one of these beneath it (amzn.to/366KCvv), and then use the loop as a fastening point for the tiedown points for kayaks and other long loads. If I was moving your trailer, I would use one strap there and another at the hitch pin on my trailer hitch. I would also get a set of load-stops (amzn.to/3cL5DNL) to keep the load from shifting, as well as extra tie-down. Good Luck!

    When you installed the rack, did you have to tinker around with the measurements? The front rack fits fine but my back ones don't work with whatever measurement I found on their site. Thanks in advance for the help.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wanted a wider crossbar spread. Moving the back crossbar rearward helped to bring the pads more inline with the ridge on the roof. I like that placement better. But don't go too far; the clips won't clear the wider door frame. See my Yakima vs. Rhino Rack video at th-cam.com/video/jtIKPaonJd0/w-d-xo.html for more detail. Thanks for visiting.

    I am looking for a rack that can go on and off. My BMW rack was so easy to go on and off but these look so complicated. I have a 2019 GTI.
    Suggestions?

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This rack is super-easy to install and remove. The only complication is if you need to use T-bolt accessories. These days, more and more accessories are being made to use snap-around mounts to work with aerodynamic crossbars. So, unless you need heavy duty T-bolt accessories, racks don't come much more simple than this Rhino Rack. Thanks for visiting.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for visiting, Andrew. You may have misunderstood what I was saying, or trying to say, anyway. I'm a Yakima fan and already have matching Yakima keys for my accessories. I wanted a Yakima flush bar system, but that's the one that's not currently available for Mk7. So, I went with this Rhino Rack. This rack is called "Vortex 2500 RS," but appears to have been replaced by the ROC25. Anyway, once I decided to go with a flat bar, I didn't even bother looking at Rhino Rack because I knew I could get a similar result by switching back to Yakima... and being able to go back to using my single Yakima key. Does that clarify anything? Again, thanks for visiting.

    6:30 fairing on lead crossbars... I have not noticed those noise or flapping issues on my Yakima aero crossbars on my GTI, so maybe it’s only a Rhino Rack issue? Would love to hear what you find out... I’ll keep an eye and ear out for mine!

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I must admit that the flapping wasn't much of an issue below 75 mph. So, unless you speed too much, you may not ever notice. I haven't decided if I will put a fairing on my Yakima rack.

      Thanks for writing, David! There is no channel on the underside of the bars. If you need a place to hook, there there are T-slot compatible rings that can be used. Double-looped tiedown straps like these may work for you, too: amzn.to/3uGpU1a. Good Luck!

    Do you think it will fit two bikes and a surfboard (ca 20in wide)?

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure if all of that will fit. Fork- mount carriers tend to be narrower and may fit with your surfboard. But I don't think two "wheel-on" carriers will fit with a board since they're wider. Thanks for visiting.

    • @joshfuckernepal

      Yes I’m worried it won’t fit. Now deciding between aesthetics or functionality

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshfuckernepal - Another possibility, and I'm not an expert with surfboards, is using a kayak mount that's designed to hold the load at an angle instead of flat. That will save some crossbar space. The question that I cannot answer, but you might, is "can a surfboard ride on a kayak mount?"

    • @joshfuckernepal
      @joshfuckernepal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StealthGTI Yes, I've been looking into that as well. I am not an an expert either, but I don't see a reason a surfboard can't travel on a kayak mount. But can't find too many answers. There are also vertical kayak mounts that sit 90 deg above the bar which will save a lot of room. It is just another piece of gear. I am also considering the wider rhino rack (non-flush ends) which is much wider and will likely fit everything I need. It is Just not as sleek as this low profile one.

    • @joshfuckernepal
      @joshfuckernepal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, I've got two flush mount 1Up racks for the bikes which I believe are on the narrower end of the spectrum.

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. I don't think I'd carry one without at least having "load blocks" mounted on the T-slot channel to prevent the hull from shifting left/right on the crossbar. Crosswinds can do tricky things up there. Thanks for visiting!

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No leaks. I don't leave my racks mounted long enough for the door seals to take-on a new shape. I rack-up when I need it, remove them when I don't, and my seals return normal very soon afterwards. I'm about to take the rack on a 7000-mile journey. The seals may take a little longer to recover after such a long drive, perhaps resulting in a temporary wind noise at the door, but I don't expect any leaks. Thanks for visiting.

    Does this rack damage the paint at all?

    • @StealthGTI
      @StealthGTI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! Nearly any rack can damage the paint if left mounted for too long. I had very light marring a couple years ago. A detailer resolved those marks without trouble. My normal practice is to leave the rack mounted for no longer than necessary, perhaps a day or two. I recently did a 7400-mile road trip that had the rack mounted for over 30 days. There was definite marks left on the paint. I think they are actually water deposits from rain; not actual paint damage. I tried to buff them out without much luck. I'm having the car detailed by a pro in July and will share a video of the outcome. I'll probably reduce my use of the rack, but I will also consider having paint protection film applied to the areas where the pads contact the paint. Thanks for visiting!
