Hey guys, how's it going? Chris Connor here and welcome to another episode of filmmaker reacts for my channel. Seat back, relax and lets study the filmmaking techniques as well as talk about what visual effects can be pulled of within after effects! This week we are reacting and taking a look at two Destiny 2 Gunslinger short film cinematic!

Still the saddest and happiest I've been in Destiny. Sad that Cayde died, happy cause best DLC of D2 so far. Weren't they supposed to add a statue for Cayde? What happened to that?
@Nathaniel Lyman not actually true: he had a family in the golden age, but lost his memory when he became an exo. He then lost his memory every time his memory was wiped, and when he was revived as a guardian

The little drone, a Ghost, is what’s responsible for healing and reviving the ‘Guardians’.
Fun fact, when he initially revived in the trailer, his shoulders were tensed up until he felt his horn on his head. He really likes it.
The gunslinger, Cayde-6, was overconfident and pulled out his Ghost to heal and it was promptly sniped and destroyed. He can’t return to life without specifically his Ghost.
There were actually more cutscenes but they were spaced out too far apart. You could find a video where it’s stitched in chronological order.
Edit: the Ace he refers to is his son, and he named his revolver the Ace of Spades

No, once they’re destroyed, they cannot be revived/repaired. They can be knocked out and put in a coma-like state, which happened in Curse of Osiris, where Sagira was knocked out by a Vex blaster, came to and hijacked OUR Ghost, and he was knocked out until Sagira returned to her shell
@@fbi2522 as far as the game has shown, no. Yes our Guardian was dead for years. But we got resurrected by our Ghost when our Ghost chose us. Ghosts go around choosing new people to bring back as Guardians. Our Ghost was made by the Traveler. And there are supposed a limited amount of Ghosts. So yes our character was dead for years but that’s because we hadn’t met our Ghost yet. Who knows how long our Ghost had been wandering before they chose us. But long story short a Ghost’s death is permanent. At the end of the day it’s whatever Bungie wants so maybe one day there will be a way for Ghosts to resurrect.

Technically those are his final words to Uldren. his final words to us are "You tell Zavala and Ikora, the Vanguard... is the best best... i ever... lost."

Uldren's reaction was an AMAZING bit of character acting, and is really subtle and understated. Uldren's eyes unfocus from Cayde, like that line REALLY affected him. He then closes his eyes, and takes a careful breath in, taking a moment to compose himself, before the cut to black and the gunshot. The fact that his face is almost completely shrouded in shadow, all you can really see is his irises, and the moment his nostrils flare on the inhale, adds to the effect. It works so well.

To answer your quote about Cayde sounding like Nathan Drake:
Its because Nolan North (who voices Drake in Uncharted) had to voice Cayde throughout the Forsaken dlc of Destiny 2 (where this cinematic comes from). The reason he had to take over is because Nathan Fillion (Cayde's actual actor) couldn't voice him due to timing difficulties so Nolan had to sound like Cayde/ Fillion, it does work in some scenes but it does come out like Drake sometimes :)
More fun, North and Fillion are good friends. North based Nathan Drake on Nathan Fillion, hence why his Cayde sounds so similar. Also, Nathan Fillion was too busy with his new show, The Rookie, to do Cayde, but he named his character on that show Officer Nolan, after his friend.

Cayde kinda always came out like Drake to be fair. Attitude wise at least. Honestly, I didn't notice a difference playing. Not before knowing and not after.

The little floating thing he has is called a "ghost" and it's kinda of what gives our character their power as well as prevents them from dying. Having been destroyed, our character was once again very mortal and has lost his powers
I wish we can destroy the ghosts of guardians who use xenophage on Gambit.

@@finnley905 Yep. He voices the ghost as well. At first Nathan Fillion was the VA for Cayde, but he stopped working for bungie to focus on his Uncharted project. Nolan North stepped up to voice Cayde in his final moments
@@finnley905 Nolan North took over voicing the Ghost with release of Destiny: The Taken King (replacing Peter Dinklage). Cayde-6 was originally voiced by Nathan Fillion. For whatever reason, for the Destiny 2: Forsaken Fillion chose not to return (popular theory is that he was unavailable due to filming season 1 of The Rookie), and Nolan North stepped in to also voice Cayde-6 (doing a pretty darn good job of emulating Fillion's previous performance.)

The emotional part was when he said “I’m coming home, Ace” plus in the campaign “You tell Zavala and Ikora, the Vanguard is the best bet I ever lost”... DAMN, hit me right in the feelers
The character was originally voiced by Nathan Fillion, but he wasn't able to record for the Forsaken expansion so they got Nolan North instead.
Nolan North was also the voice of Nathan Drake and he has described that voice as his Nathan Fillion impression, so it's no coincidence he sounds similar to Nathan Drake here as well as he is literally doing an impression of Nathan Fillion.

@@wiiwaremania For real. I remember people raging at North filling in for Fillion 'that's not our cayde!' yada yada yada, and saying he sounds nothing like Fillion, which was just a load. While it would have been preferable for the OG voice actor to voice Cayde's final moments, Noland North did an oustanding job filling in for him, and captured that beloved Cayde charm.

Cayde-6 never actually remembered what his son’s and wife’s names were, but Cayde-5 named his unknown son Ace as motivation after he Reset.

The whole "shockwave muzzle flash" Is actually the regular gun blowing the Scorns head of, the reason it comes out in those blue watery tones, is because the blue stuff is the blood.
Or maybe it’s ether, since scorn were originally fallen and fallen need ether to survive and grow.

To be fair, he doesn't know the universe at all. He assumed the little robot thing was a basic companion/friend/pet, not the direct source of the character's power. In a normal, "epic" animation, having the companion die would be the turning point where the protagonist goes from cocky mad to legitimately furious and unleashes the full extent of the power they had previously hinted at against the fodder enemies, but that's intentionally subverted here because the story it's telling is tragic, not empowering.
A bit of context and clarifications for the video, if you want to read this wall of text:
How he got there: The location the video takes place in is one of the lowest levels of the Prison of Elders, a high security prison built to contain the most dangerous criminals and prisoners of war of the solar system. When a prison riot started and inmates began breaking out of their cells, Petra Venj (right hand of the awoken queen Mara Sov, who had the prison built in the first place) called Cayde-6 (the robot gunslinger in the video) and the Player Character to help contain the dangerous alien inmates that were rioting.
Once Cayde and the Player regained control of the Control Center and stopped the riot on the upper levels, Petra inspected the high security cells that contained the Scorn Barons and their followers (the evil aliens with 4 arms in the video) and found them empty. She then alerted Cayde that the Barons used the riot to attempt an escape through the lowest levels of the prison and Cayde, to get to the bottom levels as fast as possible, destroyed the supports that kept the Control Center hanging from the ceiling of the prison. The fall resulted in Cayde's death, but it got him to the Barons before they could escape.
After being brought back to life by his Ghost (the little drone thingy), he rises from the rubble and the video begins.
"Did you see THAT, Petra?... Petra?": Cayde realizes that Petra Venj can't hear him, meaning the comms are broken and he can't call for reinforcements. While this is happening, the Player Character is rushing as fast as possible towards Cayde's last known position but arrives just too late.
The little drone-thingy: Ghosts are little drones, each containing a small fragment of the Traveler (the machine-god that grants Guardians their powers), and they act as a bridge between the Traveler and the Guardian they are linked to. Ghosts are fully sentient and are able to speak, often helping their Guardians by hacking, providing long range communications, and bringing them back to life whenever they die. As long as the Ghost lives, its Guardian can come back from the dead. If the Ghost is killed (as happens to Cayde's Ghost), the Guardian becomes mortal again and loses their power.
"I'm coming home, Ace": When he was still human, Cayde used to have a son called Ace. After he was turned into an Exo (robot with human mind), his memory got scrambled by the process and he kept a journal to ensure he didn't forget anything important. He then died in the Collapse (a catastrophic event that brought humanity to near extinction) and was chosen and revived by a Ghost decades (if not centuries) later, becoming a Guardian and losing his already scrambled memories in the process. He pieced together his old life by reading his own journal he kept on himself when he died, and used the Ace of Spades as a symbol representing his son, so that he would never forget him again: he even named his favourite gun "Ace of Spades" to honor his son.
This may look a bit slow because this trailer was taken from an in-game cutscene.
Is he dead? He gets dealt the killing blow in the cutscene immediately after by the one leading the Barons, who uses Cayde's own gun to shoot him. This series of cutscenes is from the end of the first mission of the Forsaken expansion; and most of the story missions in the expansion revolve around avenging Cayde by hunting down the Barons and reclaiming Cayde's gun, the Ace of Spades, from Cayde's killer.

in the cutscene immediately after this, it shows that he is on the brink of death without his ghost there to heal him or give him powers. then the main antagonist of the expansion reveals himself as the mastermind behind the prison break, picks up his gun, and shoots cayde with it.

Fun fact, when he said "I'm coming home, Ace" that is his (cayde 6's) son that he lost before his conscience was tranfered into the exo body that you saw. The number after his name (6) is how many times they had to reset/wipe his recent memories, cuz some exo/robots lose their 'minds' when they remember that they once were alive and not a machine.
And it’s rare to find EXOs with their name with Number 1
And I think there is side effects when you get Reset too many times look at banshee 44 for example

She's the reason he was the way he was
Chris by the way the reason they killed the "little buddy first" (which is called a ghost) is because without it Cayde-6 (the main character throughout this) cant be revived without the ghost, so if you kill the ghost he will become mortal. The reason why they want to kill Cayde-6 is because he is a part of the vanguard in Destiny which basically protects the Last City and organizes assaults against the "Darkness".

I was waiting for this moment!!!!
To explain 24:02 the thing that was shot was his Ghost. The "ray blast" was a special bolt that can kill Ghosts. Ghosts are the the things that can heal and ressurect Guardians. The particles that go thru his hand is a wave of Light, the thing that gives a Guardian their powers and immortality.
Also that wall smash didn't kill Cayde-6, there is another clip where Uldren Sov (the main antagonist of the dlc) picks up the Ace of Spades (the gun) and kills Cayde.
There is some continuation of this cinematic, but it is mainly an opening cinematic to the "Forsaken" expantion of the game, and what is the player characters motivation(revenge) for the story. I would really love to see you react to "The taken king" trailer, as well as opening cinematic, they are leaps and bounds more epic and impactful than this cinematic.
Blizzard games and now Destiny? And I thought I couldn’t love this guy even more
Not much is known about one of the favourite Characters from Destiny 1/2 Cayde-6. But many people think based on context and dialogue, that he once had a son named Ace. His race is thought to be humans turned into living machines to fight a long forgotten war.
Their not thought to be humans. They were humans. The number designation is how many times they’ve been destroyed before their reboot. (Their memories upload to a cloud and put into a new body) the process to become an eco also requires them to lose most if not all of their memories.
Now while Exos are “immortal” after the fall of the golden age there was no longer anyway to revive them (maybe at the deep stone crypt) but the way Cayde lived was because, as many have already pointed out, he had a ghost. A robotic creature that can infinitely respawn you. But the ghosts aren’t immortal and if the ghosts are killed then anyway who was borrowing ghosts power will lose it. Meaning that Cayde when his ghost was killed was also gonna die. Hence “I’m coming home, Ace.”
The 2 names he says in the beginning, Petra and Guardian, are referencing Petra Venj, an awoken who serves under Mara Sov, and the guardian is you the player.
This came up on my recommended nearly cried it’s been 2 years too 😢

actually he could get revived. There are many reports of dead guardians who got revived. Uldran sov for example will be revived in beyoned light. at least thats what many people think.

@@NiceDevTeam yes. So if a ghost gets destroyed a new ghost can technically revive a dead guardian. Also there is all the Taken lore where oryx revived his dead sisters after killing them. My point is: There are multiple ways in the lore how a completely dead charakter could get back into the game. (Englisch is not my main language, im sorry pog)
25:36 the line "I'm coming home, Ace" refers to his dead son from before he was resurrected, named ace, which is why he named his gun Ace Of Spades, canonically when a Ghost (little buddy that got shot) resurrects you for the first time you lose all memories, he only knows because of a journal he found near him when he was resurrected

Cayde-6's normal voice actor is Nathan Fillion but he was unavailable at the time for the Forsaken DLC (or he didn't wanna do it, I can't remember) so they got Nolan North to do the voice instead.
Normally Cayde is voiced by Nathan Fillion, who unfortunately couldn't do the voice lines for Destiny 2 Forsaken. They were instead done by another member of the cast: Nolan North, who also did the voice of Nathan Drake.

12:52 the blue is ether from a head shot. Those scorn use to be fallen and they were created with ether tainted by darkness. You see the same ether when they "teleport" in the game. But every time you get a headshot ether explodes out of their faces lol

Either they took a shortcut or they did it on purpose. That blue explosion is called "light" (which I assume is a type of energy) and it actually goes through objects. We see that in the beginning when Cayde is revived.

24:20 The blue particle effects during the explosion is the Light (the Light is the "power" that gives the Ghost it's healing and reviving abilities, every ghost has a bit of light in them) released from the Ghost. These particles don't behave like smoke, more like a wave that passes through everything in its path. The action in this cutscene takes place during a mission in which Cayde-6 is on the bottom level of a prison, while the player is still on a higher level of the prison. When Cayde's Ghost is destroyed, both the player and Petra (who was also in this mission) can visibly see and feel the wave of Light propagating even in corridors far away. There is multiple renditions of the scene but the main theme is that the character, Cayde, gets defeated by the enemy, the Scorn Barrons, and then another character picks up his weapon and shoots him. The one trailer where it is shown it acts like the head was shot but it was the chest.
If I recall correctly (it’s been a few years since I played the Forsaken campaign) that cut to black between the final impact on Cayde and showing him come through the wall is actually because there is gameplay between those 2 points. It cuts back to the player at that cut to black before the impact. And later in the missions it cuts to him coming through the wall. I may be misremembering this scene but my memory is of that sequence.
These explanations of shot framing and movements remind me of my old art teacher fawning over my artwork saying it was "second nature" cause I never had any idea what the things I was doing were called, or how to explain them normally. Not sure which piece she was talking about, or if I just forgot, but that was in a public high school.

6:20 his Revolver is called the “Ace of Spades” but according to game lore Ace was also the name of Cayde’s son who died. So he named the gun after his kid, so when he says “I’m coming home Ace”.
Its him accepting defeat, and letting himself be killed.
That was such a huge moment for destiny players

The scene hits even harder when you know that Ace was his son before he became an exo and a guardian.
So basically the sniper killed the floating thing called a ghost, which enables him to revive himself if he died. But since the ghost died, if he dies he ain’t coming back. Luv u Cayde😭😭😭
Prolly the best part of the cinematic is that all the abilities are actually in the game and the way they get shown off is extremely well thought out

There’s actually a scene right after this where the main antagonist picks up Cayde’s gun and kills him with it. He doesn’t actually die from the impact of the flaming mace, but rather his own gun

Ok so with beyond light coming out, I can explain what happened in forsaken, Variks caused a riot in the prison of elders, Cayde-6 Petra Venge and your character go to stop it, Cayde and Petra split off and you go fix the security system, an explosion causes some of the prison to collapse sending cayde down a pit knocking out coms, he is ambushed by scorn, he is outnumbered and his ghost gets shot so he can not be revived anymore meaning if he dies it is a final death, the scorn barons take Cayde to Uldren Sov, who uses Ace of Spades(Cayde’s gun) and shoots him with it causing Cayde-6 a final death and the hunter vanguard position open

There is a second part to this! He says one of the best death one liners. The actor is actually Nathan Fillion. Also when Cayde-6 was looking for “Petra” and “Guardian”, it is a main character of this DLC and the player that he is looking for.
I don't know if anyone else has stated it in these comments yet, but, when Cayde states "I'm coming home ace." He is referring to his son whom according to lore from the game is dead along with his wife whom he referred to as "queen". Although no one knows if he actually has a family as when he became the robot, which are called "exos", he lost his memories from before the procedure. He only remembers them because he wrote a journal beforehand in order to try and remember but obviously can not tell if they were actually real cause he has no memories of them.

the reason for the particle explosion is because of what those monsters have in them they have a thinbg called corupt ether and it comes out as a blue gas

Cayde's pistol has a feature called "memento mori" (remember death or remember that you will die) that activates after reload, giving explosive bullets. I'm guessing that's the idea behind the exploding enemy heads. "I'm coming home Ace": Ace is his son, who died.
