Hey guys, how's it going? Chris Connor here and welcome to another episode of filmmaker reacts for my channel. Seat back, relax and lets study the filmmaking techniques as well as talk about what visual effects can be pulled of within after effects! This week we are reacting and taking a look at two OVERWATCH ZERO HOUR short film cinematic!

2:56 - This seat belongs to Jack Morrison, who is the masked man in the short "Hero." After a falling out with Gabriel Reyes (Reaper), a fight broke out and Jack was presumed dead in the aftermath. He now goes under the alias "Soldier:76"
3:00 - Ana Amari was a sniper working in the early days of Overwatch. During a mission, she ended up in a shootout with the Talon sniper Widowmaker. However, a slight hesitation allowed Widowmaker to get the upper hand, shooting Ana directly through the scope and into her eye. Again, she was presumed dead, but recovered. She now uses a biotic sniper, which heals teammates when you shoot them. Her daughter, Pharah, is a playable character.
3:06 - Torbjorn Lindholm is a Sweedish Engineer known for his skills at designing weapons and gadgets. During a special operation, Torbjorn was injured severely, but saved by Reinhardt. Ultimately, Torbjorn lost his arm, but lived. As a combination of thanks and hoping Rein would stop being so overly concerned, he allowed Rein to name his daughter. Reinhardt named the girl Brigitte, and she is the character we see at 7:51
3:08 - Angela Ziegler was a medical student during the omnic crisis. The crisis had a heavy toll on her, as it resulted in the loss of her parents. She is a close friend of the Lindholms, and visited Torbjorn when he lost his arm. Using the Valkyrie swift-response suit, she was able to provide healing in a whole new revolutionary way. Under the alias "Mercy," she is the woman who heals Mei at 8:07

The 3 along the bottom are from left to right: Torbjorn, Sojourn, and Genji
Sojourn is currently a character in development, and is set to release next. All we know about her is that she is Canadian.
Null Sector (the robots in the short) is an omnic terrorist group
I never knew that torb is Brig's father, there is so much lore I haven't read.
I did not know the reason of torb losing his arm nor did I know REINHARDT was the one to name Torb’s daughter lol. Thank you I really had no idea

8:55 the music stopping, than hearing Genji pulling his dragon blade ultimate as the music returns is the shiver moment for me in this trailer, every time goosebumps and shiver down the spine, i love it.
Indeed, I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't play OW before watching these as you would not be able to pick up on things such as the voiceline and get that split second of realisation before Genji appears.

Basically her dad was pretty injured in one battle and told Reinhardt if he actually survived than Reinhardt would get to be the god-father of his next kid.

Another note on the "missing" characters: There is a short story that tells where Ana Amari and Morrison (Soldier 76) are, in Egypt as I recall. Torbjorn is actually traveling with Bastion (the PTSD omnic from the earlier cinematic). I really hope we get more new cinematics that reintroduce them all to the team.
Torb isn't really traveling, he's staying at home, retired, with his wife Ingrid, and he occasionally answers a call from some government to come clean up an omnic-related mess. Based on Zero Hour, he ignored Winston's recall message. He basically took Bastion home and adopted it as his pet (the OW2 Bastion redesign shows it wearing an Ironclad Guild baseball cap). Given that Torb's hometown of Gothenburg is going to be one of the new maps related to the campaign mode for OW2, we can infer that the Ironclad Guild is going to be attacked, the new Overwatch will come to the rescue, and THAT will be what convinces Torb to come out of retirement and rejoin the fight.

@@cofffee817 No. The Mercy Short Story takes place after the Ana/Jack Comic. They're in Mercy's Story because they got injured during that comic. They ask Mercy if she wants to join them and she declines. Presumably, some time after Ana and Jack leave, Mercy gets the call from Winston and decides to fully armor up for the first time since Overwatch shut down. Also, presumably, she's made modifications to her armor in the intervening time since, you know, character re-design for OW2.
If I had to guess where they're going with this, I would say Ana and Jack are going to track down Pharah before rejoining Overwatch.
I'm really hoping Zarya will become a sort of villain in the Overwatch story. I mean, she was introduced in the Sombra Short as the Private Body Guard and Pet Project of Lady Volskaya. Her tech is, obvsiously, Volskaya Industries tech. I could see her being a Corporate Heavy only interested in the interests of the company that made her.
For Hana (the pilot for DVa), they could take an interesting route and have the UN request that Korea dispatch the MEKA Squad to either apprehend of kill any active members of Overwatch once they learn that Overwatch has violated The Petras Act. In exchange, the UN dispatches forces to Korea to defend it from the Omnics. After some time, MEKA Squad is recalled to Korea as the UN Forces are struggling against the Omnics. Hana elects to continue the hunt, telling her team to go back. So she could start out as an Anti-Hero whose sole goal is to bring Overwatch to justice. From there they could do something REALLY interesting and have her run into Hanzo who convinces her that Overwatch isn't evil after having decided that Genji was right. They could go from that to Hana and Hanzo arriving in Hanamura only to be confronted by Zenyatta who tracked Hanzo down after Genji told him that he was rejoining Overwatch. After a discussion, Zenyatta agrees to help Hanzo reclaim The Shimada Clan and the three assault Shimada Tower (or Castle, whatever their headquarters is) and that could be a cool campaign mission. After the current Head of The Shimada Clan is deposed and Hanzo takes his rightful place, he leaves the Clan in the hands someone he trusts and, after using Shimada resources to repair and, possibly, upgrade DVa (campaign progression integration anyone?), the trio take a Shimada Quinjet to Gibralter to find Overwatch. Once they find Overwatch, Hana learns that her home is in big trouble. The UN had no idea what they were getting into and has no answer to the Omnics. MEKA Squad, along with the remnants of the UN Forces are struggling to hold the line. Hana asks Winston to send Overwatch to Korea to help. Winston agrees, despite the risk with the UN Forces there. Before they can formulate a plan, the doors open once more and Pharah steps into the base citing that if they're going to be fighting over the open ocean, they're going to need an Aerial Commander for this mission. Pleasantries are exchanged and it's revealed that Ana and Jack succeeded in their mission and sent Pharah back to Overwatch. Two Strike Teams are assembled and Overwatch flies to Korea. The Aerial Strike Team will take the Omnics head on over the Ocean. The Ground Strike Team will deploy on the coast, ready to defend the city from any ground forces that may slip by, Could you imagine an Aerial Campaign Mission where you get to pick between Pharah, DVa, Echo, and Mercy?

As a genji player in the game, i can confirm blizzard have done him justice in this cinematic to make up for the years without a single change
It was consolation for the triple jump nerf... and the blade nerf, and the spread nerf, and the little cage that they put him in so no one could use him for so long. But, hey new player had to learn who Genji was somehow.
I love his new design he just looks so badass which is the reason I started playing him in the first place

Genji is BY FAR my favorite part of this! He’s one of my favorites so seeing him fully in his element as a badass is SO SATISFYING! Trust me, as someone who has followed the game for years, this is the best thing they could’ve done. I’m so happy!

Morrison's full name is Jack Morrison, and he is actually Soldier 76. He is the guy with blonde hair at the center of the image. Dr. Ziegler, aka Mercy is the "angel" that heals Mei. The dark-skinned lady standing next to Morrison in the picture is Ana Amari and the other person in the picture is actually a new character for Overwatch 2. There is lots of lore for Overwatch outside of the cinematics. There are official comics, smaller trailers for other characters, as well as stories told via limited time game modes (Overwatch Retribution, etc).
I know that this isn't the kind of thing you do on your channel but I think it would be cool if you were to play Overwatch on the channel! It's not a request, it's a suggestion. That aside, once again, great video! I've learned a lot about cinematography thanks to you (I plan on working on a video game or an animated series someday as a writer).

Added context (because it's not really spelled out in the cinematics): Brigitte is Reinhardt's goddaughter and his squire. She is the daughter of Torbjorn, another character in the game that (sadly) does not have his own cinematic. Torbjorn is an inventor and former weapons designer. Brigitte has his knack with machinery and actually built her powered armor and flail herself so she could follow Reinhardt on his "adventures".

What Blizzard shorts really bringt to life (in my opinion) are the animated characters themselves. Blizzard is soooo go(o)d at animating the characters even the smallest details. it's insane.

Well it's more a talk scene with no true action or anything worth analysing, maybe he could do one that covers a bunch of origin stories and everything but again, that's not what he does
The action sequence of Genji + the sound effects and music ramping up the scene = instant goosebumps no matter how many times I watch this
I'm sure a lot of it had to do with your film experience, but you're the first person I've seen reacting to this that caught the dialogue callbacks. "I'll be right behind you" "You better be" and "stick together"
Was immensely satisfying someone actually get it. The level of detail in these short vids is amazing, and they always manage this almost impossible task of making such a short video not only a coherent story, but with enough color , emotion and exposition in a short time to get you emotionally involved. It's a massive task that only those of us who have tried to tell a story via any medium (video, written, whatever. I myself am a writer with 4 full length novels under my belt) can appreciate.
I am not exaggerating when I say that Blizzard is easily the best at pulling all of these emotional levers and delivering all of the needed expositional data within this short time.
Anyone who has ever written any sort of novel or short story knows how hard it is to convey any sort of data necessary for your reader to understand the story properly while in context and action, without leaning on expositional dialogue. Giving the reader necessary info through action is necessary for your story to be interesting, and very very difficult.
Blizzard just gives us a master class on combining music, sound, dialogue, filmmaking specific elements (camera angle, dramatic unveiling of characters, scale and setting shots), along with subtle visual/audio cues and clues in both setting and characters altogether to convey this simple, but deep story that reveals more details and thought each time you watch it. They never once lean on an expositional dump or give more information than is needed right then to carry the story forward. What is revealed is always through action and is always only just enough to make sure the consumer knows what is happening, but is left wanting more of that knowledge and insight to the world, even independently of the current story. They give you enough to understand, draw you into the story, and leave you wanting enough afterward to do deeper research for even dry facts to get more insight into their world.
Basically, they are the absolute kings of short form video storytelling and it's not even close.

I was, out of nowhere, randomly watching reactions to Zero Hour again. Lots of good ones out there. I click back to my subscriptions and...here it is! Finally! God damn I love watching Chris so much. Such a solid dude.
Chris your reactions literally make me tear up a little. I can't really explain it but your reactions are so genuine and animated I almost envy the feeling. I'm not a sappy person so I'll just say stick to it dude, you're awesome.
Also, some characters did not get Winston's call. And some of the heroes are vigilantes now. And if I were to choose a power it would be Reapers ability to be smoke.
Once again, I really enjoyed your energy and analysis.
If I get the chance to show my friends these video shorts, my hope is that they get as much fun out of them as you do. :)
You help me see some of the thought that went into making these moments, like the double-overlay visual of post-explosion "shock" and the contrast between the two shots of Winston looking at the photograph at the beginning and the end.
I'll keep my eyes open for what you do in the future.

having watched you react to so many of these I have to say I admire your dedication to your craft. Even seeing you react like a kid I could still see the filmmaker underneath dissecting and making notes off all the effects that were taking place and im sure how best to incorporate anything in your own work. I have to say bravo and I only hope that I get the opportunity to see a full length feature from you at some point
You should 100% watch the sigma origin story for the next overwatch reaction although it’s not a sort of high quality animated cinematic it is still a really cool video. Loved this vid so much I’ve been looking forward to this for so long and love your content keep it up.

31:11 If I could have one hero's powerset, which would I have? I would be happy with either Reaper's ghost powers or Mercy's healing powers.
Honestly don't go with reapers wraith but with moiras as in lore she failed the experiment on reaper but implemented an upgraded version on herself, which is why fade and wraith form are so similar to each with moiras fade being way more refined.
This is what i Will always give Blizzard credit for even with everything going on you cant deny the emotional impact of some of the scenes, the amazing voice acting and the music

Honestly, I saw Zero Hour easily 15 times, I always get chills when Genji comes into action at the beginning and when he cuts the hand, some things never change haha
Actually now that I'm thinking about it, you can do the same as Overwatch cinematics with FFXIV and watch the cinematic in order
End of an Era -> Heavenward full trailer -> Stormblood full trailer and finish with the Shadowbringers full trailer
