My Dad was singing karaoke in FL and the karaoke-jockey (who had heard Dad many times) approached and asked if Dad styled himself after Johnny Hartman. Dad & I looked at each other and then both of us said, "Who?". The KJ was shocked bc, as he then said, Dad sounded so very much like Johnny!!! He said that even Dad's stylistic ways reminded him of Johnny. You can bet that Dad & I youtubed Johnny Hartman after karaoke that evening. I was shocked at the similarities! Dad humbly said, "No, he's way better than me"....but I said, "Dad, it's like I'm listening to YOU!". Dad even sang a lot of the same songs that Johnny had sung. "The Nearness of You" was one of Dad's favorites......and it is one of the songs when he sounded the MOST like Johnny. My Dad passed over 3 & 1/2 yrs. ago....but this remains one of my favorite memories. I just had to share it.
WITHOUT ANY QUESTION ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH! I HAVE EVERYTHING YOU EVER RECORDED IN MY FAVORITE IS STILL JOHN COLTRANE AND JOHNNY HARTMAN. IT SHOWS HOW WONDERFULLY COLTRANE COULD BACK UP A SINGER! NO EGO BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL MUSIC! LISTENING TO IT NOW IN THE EARLY MORNING LIGHT TO BRING SOME LIGHT TO MY DAY DURING THIS CRAZY TIME IN EVERYONE'S LIFE! BE SAFE BE WELL DO KIND....🙏🏼💖☮️💯🛐
I wonder what makes him a jazz singer in your opinion? Is it his background band? He sings pretty straight ballad melody, I don't see him as especially jazz vocalist anymore than, say, Sinatra or Nat Cole.
I manged Artists in Los Angeles and they were sensational vocalists but disrespected because they dared to sing standards and Jazz in an era of pop music that has forgotten how to sing, what to sing and how to add their own soul to the recording. Johnny Hartman was a giant and its a blessing that we have his music here and on record to learn from and be inspired by.
Oh my goodness ___ what a wonderful comment ____ so well said and TRUE ____ Johnny was and I so special. I don't think its right or proper to push one's taste on others ____ but goodness ___ isnt great ___ simply great ? I think so anyway
Hello Larry Glickman, do you still manage Balladeer type singers? I sing Johnny Hartman songs at local clubs here in NJ. A college music professor told me I sound like him. (Not exactly like him, but very close to his singing voice). Email: dayproducts@gmail.com
my God, how good is this, listen to it at night, its late and your alone, the rain is softly blowing on your window pane, you think about that girl from long ago, you let her go and you thought 'there'll be other chances but you didnt realise it was the only chance' dont know where that came from but thats what this music does to me.
Mr. Hartman, voice was just majestic, melody, sexxz! This man could hit any song out of the ball park. Such a shame they underrated him like they did. Because he was black and great! Excellent at it best.
I remember playing Johnny Hartman for my Dad, a music lover, and he absolutely flipped and could not understand how he never heard of him before. He was almost crying listening to him, as I am now.
What a guy's guy, what a crooner voice and what a way to caress a classic. Is there anyone who doesn't like this song, speak now or forever hold your peace!
We need to go back to music like this!! The kind of music that transports you to lovely memories!! Music that speaks to all your senses! Music that brings a beautiful sweet essence when you hear it!!
Another great Hoagy Carmichael song... Johnny Hartman was such a smooth and soulful singer. I love his CD with Coltrane, which might be the most romantic CD ever recorded.
So, true, caught his performance in East Orange, NJ and he was utterly amazing!! I am a big Authur Prysock fan, but. J H completely blew me away. Much Kudos for him. LB😎
This man is my favorite male jazz singer of all time. Forget about all the rest. As a jazz singer he puts Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Perry Como et al in the shade.
I like him, but he's working in a completely different musical genre. Comparing him with Sinatra, Como, Bennet, etc. is comparing apples to oranges. I'm talking jazz singers in the style these singers did. Jarreeau is a much more rock ballad influenced style.
Yes, I had already answered that same question from from Judith. I agree with you, Walter. I don't think either the man or the genre matches Hartman. Jarreau's stuff is pretty fluffy compared to Hartman and he doesn't have nearly the vocal equipment or musically expressive vocal chops.
This is my FAVORITE song of his!!! I pour myself some wine. .... sit out on the terrace to hear the ocean waves make rythm to his voice....... oh the love of romantics would be incomplete without TRUE TALENT as his. ....God Bless You Johhny*)
Perfect. What an incredible singer! This is music from a bygone era when quality mattered, now replaced by dreck. Johnny was total class as a singer and a man. Today, class is in extremely short supply. Johnny is gone but his music lives on, and for that we can all be grateful.
Johnny Hartman, mellow AS a cello, HIS voice of a LIFE well spent.....HIS SONGS are ageless, musical genuine at it's finest....PS CAN I GET A WITNESS......pps MUCHO GRACIAS AMIGO,SIP in the AFTERLIFE.....
I first heard Johnny Hartman sing this song in The Bridges of Madison County would Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep's and it was such a beautiful song I've been listening to it ever since I've heard other artist sang the song but not quite like Johnny Hartman just beautiful
I did not know! I had never heard of this dude. I just happen to be listening to Music Choice Jazz station and this came on. At first I thought it said Johnny Mathis. Then I took a double take. Love songs! I love discovering new music. Well, new to me.
One of my Mom's cousins who grew up in Harlem, NYC, introduced me to Johnny Hartman back around 1999 or 2000. Then I bought a Hartman and Coletrane CD. His voice is so compelling!
One of my Mom's cousins who grew up in Harlem, NYC, introduced me to Johnny Hartman back around 1999 or 2000. Then I bought a Hartman and Coletrane CD. His voice is so compelling!
I Adore the Music from this era!. This was when music Was Music!. The Lyrics has meaning, were sexy, soothing and comforting. Jonny Hartman was awesome.i Do Love a man , Black , White, or other can sing,..... and dance. Have Mercy 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯💯💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋. I'm His!!!
That rhythm section With great double bass And the trumpet with Harmon mute running all about Johnny's languid bass-baritone Make this tune a step above
This is truly great singing-so sensitive and sweet. I performed for four nights with Jimmy Scott in the 70's. Here Johnny Hartman's soulfulness and tender beauty reminds me so much of those nights with Jimmy Scott-This is simply fantastic!! Thank you, Johnny Hartman
Always loved Johnnie Hartman his collaboration with trane is legendary, His phrasing and diction are wonderful as John Coltrane once said of him there is just something about his voice and l agree 🥰
Listening to Johnny evokes all the romance any lyric could ever dream of enjoying. I have noted that jazz has become a universal language. As you listen to this track and the marvelous Harmon-muted trumpet stylings, consider this isn't Dizzy Gillespie or Freddy Hubbard, Miles Davis or Fats Navarro and not even Cannonball Adderly's brother Nat. No, this is Terumasa Hino - one of the finest jazz trumpeters in the world and a native of Japan. He now lives in New York City.
Simply the best! When walking out of the threater from the Bridges of Madison county all the patron were not discussing the film . They all wanted to know who was that singer on the radio scene. I was happy to tell them who it was.
One of my favorite singers I have all of his albums and now lucky to find most on Amazon. He may not of had the wide recognition of others, but jazz lovers revered him. Thankfully, in this age of digitalization, we will have the joy of listening to Johnny Hartman forever.
It took me 26 years for me to discover the wonders of this specific little genre of jazz and all of the wonderful artists and vocalists that gave us these sounds. Truly satisfying and fantastic music. So good.
Love this song and Johnny. Such an under-rated talent he was and the trumpet of Terumasa on this is just sublime. Play it with RainyMood in the background and a scotch in hand.
Walking on Hollywood Blvd and holding hands and heading for, Shelley's Manhole, on Caheunga! In New York, hitting all the Jazz clubs! Wonderful and Entertaining! Jazz, Baby!
Where have I been? I only "discovered" this man's heart-touching voice the other day.... Thanks to WPFW, 89.3. ..Oh my gosh, I feel like I have been a cave !!
I have loved this singer longer than many of his fans have been alive. One thing about the human voice that amazes me....there are millions and billions of people on Earth, yet when you here just a few notes sung by this man you know instantly who it is. And of course this is true for most singers--we can hear their distinctive voices. However, in my youth I spent time in Hong Kong, and one night in the hotel bar, I heard a young Chinese guy singing, and if would close my eyes I would swear he was Frank Sinatra. But I have not heard any Johnny Hartman imitators.
Such a shame young people today don't have a clue what great music is all about!! I feel sorry for them all - that they'll never appreciate the talent previous generations have known. Young people don't even recognize the names of the greats - this gentleman, Arthur Prysock, Freddie Cole, Brook Benton, ad infinitum!! What a tremendous loss for the younger generations.
AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow This CD combines together parts of two sessions recorded in Tokyo by the warm ballad singer Johnny Hartman. Although titled For Trane, the vocal recital only has three songs associated with John Coltrane ("My Favorite Things," "Violets for Your Furs," and "Nature Boy") and the majority of the selections are actually taken from an unrelated session in which Hartman was matched with trumpeter Terumasa Hino. The music alternates between ballads ("Violets for Your Furs" and "The Nearness of You" are high points) and swingers and, although Hartman does not really improvise, his voice (still in its prime at the time) is appealing. Considering his slim discography, Johnny Hartman's fans will definitely want this one.
I HAVE IT IT'S FANTASTIC! A FEW YEARS AGO I BOUGHT EVERYTHING HE EVER SANG! THEY SAID THE LITTLE BLUE EYES ASIANS PREMIERE FOR BREAKFAST! HE DIED UP IN HARLEM A TIRED JUNKIE WHICH MAKES ME I HATE THIS WORLD AND THE BUSINESS THAT I'M IN! BLESS YOUR HEART AND BLESS YOUR SOUL...
I just got John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman for $20 mint condition in stereo and Johnny Hartman I just dropped by to say hello for $15 also mint in mono.

Your dad had an awesome taste for good Music
A time treasure memory of your dad, very Beautiful moment❤
None better than Hartman and Coltrane...my, my, my
And thery have great material to work with!
One of the most under rated artist in music history.

Totally agree.

I agree 100 %
Much better than Sinatra that's, for me, the most overated singer in musical history.
Sho you right.
The vocal purity, the diction, the beauty in sound and delivery is so smooth that it floors me. He has always been one of my favorite male singers
Yes. A true master. Plus the phrasing, the gentleness, the detailed attention to the meaning of the words: the truthfulness.
As I grow older I have a deeper appreciation for my uncles music. Loving it!
He possessed one the richest, warm voices ever.
Danielle, same hear. I find myself drawn to the songs my father loved.
He's the greatest - amazing voice, articulation, doesn't get better than him!
You and me both
Of course, he's a Genius X
I think Johnny Hartman is the greatest male jazz vocalist of all time!
I agree.
And one of the most unknowned.
I agree
I wonder what makes him a jazz singer in your opinion? Is it his background band?
He sings pretty straight ballad melody, I don't see him as especially jazz vocalist anymore than, say, Sinatra or Nat Cole.

AMEN to that. What a tremendous voice.
Please visit my page. I am looking forward to more recordings this fall.

Billy, I certainly understand.
Who is playing that trumpet? Someone tell me please!
Johnny was off the charts.
@@NNYTube I am sir
One of the greatest male voices in Jazz. Crying shame he didn't get the notice many lesser talents did.
Beautiful smooth as soft silk voice that will have you imagining your in a smoky jazz club slow dancing with someone you love. Pure perfection....
This man had a voice that can't be replaced, he was one of a kind
Mr. Hartman, voice was just majestic, melody, sexxz! This man could hit any song out of the ball park. Such a shame they underrated him like they did. Because he was black and great! Excellent at it best.
Keep this up otherwise the current and future generations will never know what good music is like.
The most underrated jazz vocalist of all time.
If I could have the voice of any man who ever lived, it would be the voice of this man.
What a voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Butter is rough compared to Johnny's silky smooth voice. Good God, Almighty!
he makes Nat King Cole sound like Hilda Ogden.
A cold December morning in Iceland, listening to Johnny Hartman and preparing for Christmas.
sounds perfect
A cold snowy night, a fire in the fireplace, a drink, and a nice lady to share it with and of course this music.
Doesn't get any better than that!
I remember playing Johnny Hartman for my Dad, a music lover, and he absolutely flipped and could not understand how he never heard of him before. He was almost crying listening to him, as I am now.
This type of music isn't performed much anymore..... and what a loss.
Please visit my page. I'm trying to change that!!! More recordings to come!
J'Aime sa Voix ses chansons quel DOUCEUR a l'écoute 🌹
What a guy's guy, what a crooner voice and what a way to caress a classic. Is there anyone who doesn't like this song, speak now or forever hold your peace!
We need to go back to music like this!! The kind of music that transports you to lovely memories!! Music that speaks to all your senses! Music that brings a beautiful sweet essence when you hear it!!
Yes I agree. A sensational singer totally underrated and perhaps unheard of in some jazz circles.
Another great Hoagy Carmichael song... Johnny Hartman was such a smooth and soulful singer. I love his CD with Coltrane, which might be the most romantic CD ever recorded.
Definitely the most romantic CD ever recorded!
+yug08 +1
ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT QUESTION 🙏🏼💖☮️💯🛐
So, true, caught his performance in East Orange, NJ and he was utterly amazing!! I am a big Authur Prysock fan, but. J H completely blew me away. Much Kudos for him. LB😎
I agree. What a voice.. he was just getting started again. He died too soon, sadly. That voice and amazing delivery.. 🌹❤️
I just discovered him! OMG! He is awesome!!! What a voice!
My God, what a voice. What a song. What a music !
This man is my favorite male jazz singer of all time. Forget about all the rest. As a jazz singer he puts Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Perry Como et al in the shade.

Robert Wendell A little late to comment, but personally I think that Arthur Prysock comes closest..
Steadfast I don't personally find Prysock to be in the same class. He doesn't have nearly the expressive and musical depth as Hartman.
Ohhhhh myyyy.... This song and his voice... just makes me fuzzy all over.... the Ultimate LOVE song... it's IntoXicatinG
This is my FAVORITE song of his!!! I pour myself some wine. .... sit out on the terrace to hear the ocean waves make rythm to his voice....... oh the love of romantics would be incomplete without TRUE TALENT as his. ....God Bless You Johhny*)

You're so truely right! Even without the terrace... :)
This is great. But my favourite is My One And Only Love.
The most beautiful, romantic voice, ever.... thank you Johnny Hartman!
I love this jazzy version sung by Johnny Hartman, well done, makes me feel like sitting in a cafe drinking my Latte enjoying the music.
This man could sing
Thanks one of the true greatest voices in music. My dad always said he was one of the greatest 😊😊😊
Perfect. What an incredible singer! This is music from a bygone era when quality mattered, now replaced by dreck. Johnny was total class as a singer and a man. Today, class is in extremely short supply. Johnny is gone but his music lives on, and for that we can all be grateful.
yes!!!!!
I really enjoy how his voice gets to my heart Each and every single song he sings. What a talent
The last balladeer what a tremendous voice
Coltrane said there is just something about his voice
Johnny Hartman, mellow AS a cello, HIS voice of a LIFE well spent.....HIS SONGS are ageless, musical genuine at it's finest....PS CAN I GET A WITNESS......pps MUCHO GRACIAS AMIGO,SIP in the AFTERLIFE.....
The great Johnny Harman on the best Album with "Johnny" Coltrane..
One of the most recognisable male jazz singers ....no mistaking him lovely growling baritone lines ❤❤
The essence of a time gone by, a softer time, a romantic time, lost forever. The time time of times. In my opinion: Bill Konrad
A real velvet voice. Love this jazzy man. 🥀❤️
I first heard Johnny Hartman sing this song in The Bridges of Madison County would Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep's and it was such a beautiful song I've been listening to it ever since I've heard other artist sang the song but not quite like Johnny Hartman just beautiful

Beautiful jazz singing. One of the great old songs too.
Lawd, the things that man could do with his voice! Swoon to the Crooner!!
That rhythm section
With great double bass
And the trumpet with Harmon mute running all about
Johnny's languid bass-baritone
Make this tune a step above
I did not know this singer existed, I put it by chance and it marked my soul, so much elegance, he is already my favorite, what a great singer.
sorely missed .. what a wonderful voice!
Most love songs are empty because there's no love, but this guy fills it to the brim and then some. JH is a unique voice and the only rival to NKC.
Splendid baritone
Wonderful warm voice of a baritone. Great Johnny...

Just saw the ‘Bridges of Madison County’. Again. Great film. Great book by Waller. Great Hartman music.
Again also loving Elvin's brush playing! Magic!
Man his vibrato is so satisfying.

Johnny Hartman, Fantastic ! Great interpretation. This is music !!!!
The most underrated male singer --- Johnny Adams also both we're great

Absolutely lovely. Only discovered Johnny Hartman a handful of years ago - and so happy I did...
Simply stunning! • Always takes me to “The Bridges of Madison County”
If this could'nt win a lovely lady, nothing would.

Mr. B & Red Prysok, you nailed it.
And maybe Joe Williams and Kevin Mahogany as well. I lime them all, but Johnny is my fave.
You and I both... I have just literally found about great vocalist few minutes ago searching for EASY LIVIN.... I am already hooked.
You have a great enjoyable task ahead of you discovering Johnny's great songbook!
Sam Fletcher was another great vocalist who use to perform at the Parisian Room on Washington & La Brea in LA back in the day....
Just beautiful!
Thanks. Very nice. This is one of my favorite songs. Mmmmmmmm
Take your good time Johnny.
This is the kind of music I want to sing. Great guy to follow. He is one of the best!
