Yeah! And how is Pyle killing the drill instructor is the only part of him thats "human"? The whole video claims that becoming a killer is when you lose individuality and humanity. Very good video but a bit confused at some points.

I believe it's still a proper analysis in terms of Jokers hesitation. Hartmann trained them to keep their shit wired tight at all times and at the moment of truth he failed. Instead of clearing the jam he fumbled around and dropped his weapon, looking inept and untrained. His instincts weren't sharp. It should have been instinctual "shit, jammed" wham bam clear it and hose her. Especially if he's approaching the hostile position I would have made sure I was locked and loaded ready to fire.
Ahmet Ertuğrul Akyol The point of the video is highlighting the conflicts within the characters. Pyles new killer instinct and his last semblance of humanity clash and culminate in the murder of Hartmann. He loathes Hartmann because of the abuse of his psyche, or humanity, and his instincts motivate him to squeeze the trigger. Pyle was defending his own humanity from being lost forever in a void of abuse, but upon the act of murder, he realizes he lost it and in that moment decides to kill himself. There's more to it then him simply going crazy or else he would have triggered joker too. Granted joker helped him but he also participated in the act of abuse that pushed Pyle over the edge, the soap scene.
Failure to perform SPORTS.
A simple yet discrete detail I liked was that "born to kill" was written on his helmet and the peace symbol was over his heart. Shows how Hartman hijacked his brain but Joker retained his heart.

Creating the duality upon his individuality.
Ironically, or intentionally, Hartman was the man who showed the least amount of heart.
This movie really comes to show that ultimately we create our own demons and that we ultimately become what we hate. My uncle served in Vietnam and I know nothing about his time there. All that my dad told me was that his brother left for Vietnam and someone else came back.

The horror, the horror.
Sub Zero my great uncle served there too. He was 18 or a little above it, and he returned a changed man. Somehow he is one of the funniest guys I’ve ever known, but PTSD still sticks with him to this day.
That happened to a lot. They were drafted, made it through the severe behavior modification of basic/boot camp, then exposed to the horrors of war. They may be in one piece physically, but don’t expect to see that same individual again. PTSD and a TBI did a number on me as well.
And you have this movie review youtuber telling otherwise.
The scene where the marines sneak out of bed as they prepare to beat Pyle is arguably the most sinister for me. They look like a pack of wild animals before they hunt their prey. Very poetic when considering the dehumanization factor.
That scene made me so furious. It is such a disgusting Display of bullying I’ve ever seen
I've always hated that scene. I know Pyle messed up quite a bit but he didn't deserve that. Pretty inhumane.
when it comes to survival and instinct, humans are no different than wild beasts, regardless of gender, race, or religion. and regardless of how "moral" or "evolved'' they are
Bullying is one thing, but in a combat situation you want to be sure that the guy who holds your life in his hands can stand up to the pressure. Pyle couldn't. The problem is that he wasn't discharged from bootcamp.

Yes! Joker has a novice level awareness and understanding of Jung. The Colonel's rebuttal, "Who's side are you on?" suggests the Colonel is fully aware and understanding of "the Jungian thing" but has no time or inclination to discuss it. He expects obedience. Period.

@@rohandalvi6476 Yes, indeed as Krishna spoke to Prince Arjuna about the need for war and the role of the leader. What I think is so clever by Kubrick is the reference of the quote for the soldiers and war machine that don't understand the deeper meaning of the quote.
Ironically it's people like Joker who actually make the best soldiers.
The military doesn’t want robots a mindless drone is good for following orders but a mindless drone needs instruction. The scene when joker is made squad leader is a good example any answer will be wrong and he will be punished more if he reverts himself. By sticking to his principles he shows the ability to think and stick to his guns a leadership trait.

Something I never asked myself until my third viewing of the film is, “why exactly does Lawrence (Gomer Pyle) snap at this particular part in the movie?”
The last few scenes leading up to this point show a significant improvement in his performance compared to the first scenes with Pyle. He had graduated and as Joker said, it was their last night on Parris Island. He didn’t have to put up with most of the bullying/demeaning anymore. Sure he would have no grand time in Vietnam but if he kept performing like the last few scenes with him in Boot Camp showed, then there would be very little reason for others to demean him like Hartman had done for the past few weeks. The DI is staying in Parris Island to continue training new recruits right? Pyle only had to deal with the source of most of his turmoil for the past few weeks (Hartman) for one more night. An easy task considering he’d shaped up. Sure, Pyle was bitter about his treatment for the past few weeks but in 1 night his life was about to improve compared to how it had been lately…. Okay maybe improve isn’t the right word… he’s still being sent off to Vietnam but it seemed like he was on the right track to becoming the perfect marine, even if it did cost him is individuality, sanity, and a beating or two. Perhaps not having to deal with Hartman wasn’t enough and he felt he had to kill him. Killing Hartman was retribution for his treatment but also serves as payback for drastically turning him into what Pyle deep down really isn’t; a killer.
Regardless, there’s another theory that makes the timing of his snapping point make a bit more sense: Clearly, Lawrence was drafted. There’s no way he would have volunteered. He obviously doesn’t want to be there so he figures the best way to avoid being sent to Vietnam is to fake being unfit for service. Maybe, just maybe, his plan will work… the verbal and physical abuse he endured will be worth it if he gets sent home or reassigned. What if the real reason he snapped was because of his realization that his plan of playing a fool to get him discharged failed, he endured weeks of verbal and physical abuse all for nothing, he is still being sent off to Vietnam and most likely will die. Notice how he executes the rifle exercise flawlessly in this scene and how his performance has improved overall leading up to this scene, just as if he had dropped the act or something. I don’t know, an “if I’m going sent off to die I might as well die on my own terms and might as well take Hartman with me as payback” kind of thing
I just wanted to share this theory that kind of blew my mind (pun intended) that makes the timing of Pyle’s breakdown make more sense.
Pyle is clearly a victim of the US program "Mcnamara's Morons" were the govt lowered the standards of individuals for draft (even those with low I.Qs) in order to increase US troops reinforcements in Vietnam.
I feel like if it was his plan all along, he wouldn't have seemingly improved over time as we see in the film. It seems to take him a few days to rapidly get better, but if he was trying to be discharged you'd think he'd keep the act up until the last possible moment. but it is an interesting theory
When you achieve the goals you had set, then what? It doesn't matter if you are homeless or a CEO, then what?
He transformed into what they wanted a killer. So he killed. No going up or down the chain of life, he just remained what he became. I think it's like that because he and Joker could have been friends, but instead Joker maintained his heart, and Pyle lost his.
This whole theory ignores an entire chunk of the movie where Lawrence is inspired by famous criminal assassins and dedicates his practice to the rifle, all with the intention - over days or weeks - to kill Hartman

Despite Joker joining in heavily on the abuse, Leonard spared him. That shows heart.
He's portrayed as very sinister, but I dont know who wouldnt want to shoot Hartman after a month of what he put him through. The marines just set an example for him.
Its also fitting that Kubrick's films can be watched at face value by casual moviegoers as a normal films (the shining as a horror story, full metal jacket as a war movie, etc ) or they can be completely analyzed like this and still not make any outrageous stretches...the duality of man. Amazing video, great work!

I can definitely agree with that about Kubrick films, but that analogy works for any film that could be called ‘a work of art’ (Kubrick films, No Country For Old Men, Apocalypse Now, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Taxi Driver). Great stories with hidden meanings, symbolism, all that good stuff in it as well. Unfortunately we haven’t had too many of those in the last decade, at least in my opinion.

The first time I watched Full Metal Jacket I thought it was a comedy because the boot camp scenes were hilarious to me right up until the scene where Gomer Pyle gets beaten with soap bars in socks.
Very well done. As a veteran this explains why this movie is such a big part of military culture and a favorite amongst those who serve. We are broken down into the cogs of the big military machine from day one.

You are told you fight for freedom and democracy, yet lose all individually and agency. The military is one of the biggest scams.
The military is a sacrifice.
They make you the most efficient group machine you can possibly be to defend those ideals for civilians.
But in the pursuit of that efficiency you have to sacrifice those things yourself.

The military haircut....also known as the "the great equalizer". Humans are visual creatures. Removing our hair removed a huge amount of of our individuality and made us look all the more alike.
I remember a friend and I was watching this move for the first time and in the movie. Both of us was laughing at Private Pyle until the part he committed suicide...after that we remained quiet the whole rest of the movie...realizing how boot camp can affect some people not ready for the military.

If you rewatch the movie, Rafterman starts as a photographer that gets spooked by combat. As he progresses further into film, he goes from carrying photography equipment to holding both a camera and an M16 and spouting the life as an ideal solider. Before Joker shoots the sniper, look at Rafterman's face; it's nearly identical to the face of Pvt. Pyle's and his sanity before he shoots the drill sergeant as he is the only one smiling in that situation.
issue is the 1st act starts and finishes an arc like a standalone film.
the protagonist shifts from 2 to 1, location changes, wardrobes change, characters change so relations change, situation changes means conflict changes.

Gomer Pyle isn't the worst of the bunch. He most likely got drafted and in the opening scene, he seems to be gentle and innocent which brings him into conflict with Hartman who chokes Pyle simply for having a smile on his face. Pyle goes on to become a great marksman. I view the ending in which the marines sing the mickey mouse song as a metaphor of the military-industrial complex's cultural Amercanisation of South East Asia.

@@troyweatherford2428 Stanley Kubrick was VERY precise and deliberate in what he chose to present in a film. Granted, the song is just a song, but it's inclusion at the end of this film is undoubtedly purposeful. Views may vary on what Kubrick's intent was, and indeed they do.

The woman Joker failed to kill was not an innocent child but a ruthless sniper who had to be taken care of.
Well, nobody said she was innocent. She was a ruthless sniper, she had to be taken care of. Agreed. But she was also a woman and a child and this contrasts Joker's earlier views in the film. Thanks for commenting Christian!
A Matter of Film I think in a way the sniper represented who joker kinda was on the inside. The fact that it was a child trained to kill, showed the death of innocence as children are a symbolism of purity or kind innocence. By killing her, in a way it only showed even more that joker was changed forever because she was a representation of the last piece of him. He was a man who lost all innocence by killing her. I don’t think the fact that it was a moral conflict that made it hard for him, or at the very least a simple moral conflict like it was just a child but actually I think it was the fact that he saw himself in her. He saw the dead eyes that shined with the fire burning around her. And the final scenes of the soldiers marching through this fire singing a children’s song even pushes the idea further showing that it was every bit of innocence burning away. She may have been a ruthless killer but also in the same situation as joker where she was forced to become a cog in the system, and the only thing left was her adolescence, ultimately destroyed by war. But that’s just my thoughts on it.

I love the ending. It shows the mask that the soldiers have to put on at the end. When you’re in war your goal is to survive and to not dwell on the horrors you may have had to perform. Singing the Mickey Mouse club theme song separates the soldiers from Vietnam to a more innocent time. It’s pretty dark and genius that Kubrick decided to end it that way

In the novel on which this movie is based - "The Short-Timers" by Gustav Hasford - the drill instructor tells Pyle he's proud of him after getting shot. Hardcore.
Great work! Reminded me of the film analysis I wrote in gen ed class on this movie focusing a lot on what you talked about. A lot of cool symbolism and parallels with the what's going in the plot and what the viewers see/hear

Simply Outstanding sir Thank you very much, you Flawlessly Presented an immaculate review of a "DOCUMENTARY" type of Vietnam War Movie.
I can't begin to express to you how Important this Film is to me and the type of VALIDATION it gives me. NOBODY not even my own Parents, Believed me when I told them about what I saw at Parris Island. Shortly after I showed this Film to the both of them they Immediately started to understand why I still wake up at 04:00 every night and freak the hell out.

Hey! I first watched these movie 4 years ago more or less. I had only the opportunity to watch the first part and really enjoyed it. Yesterday, I watched the whole movie and it was really really interesting. Such an experience. I would like to share something that I've noticed. In the scene where Joker kills the sniper, in the beginning on the shot you can see the word kill on his helmet and the peace sign. However, slowly the peace sign starts dissapearing to the point where we cannot see it and it is at that moment, at that shot, when you can only see the word "kill" and not the peace sign when he shoots her.

This is my kind of video essay! Awesome job. I'm glad you take a critical look at Joker, who is all too often neglected in discussions on Full Metal Jacket. If I had one piece of constructive criticism, it's that the editing when you show the impact of Hartman's psychological torture on Pyle, though technically impressive, didn't really work for me. Minor point and very much a personal thing, but all the same I thought I'd give you a criticism to work with. Outside of that little nitpick, the editing here is really outstanding. The whole thing just flows beautifully.

Thanks for the video. Great film with many memorable scenes. I went through Army basic 35 years ago then served a few years in Europe. The whole thing seemed like an out of body experience that was happening to someone else. I always felt like part of me died. The innocent child in me died. Years later I had a friend who had been a Marine drill instructor. He said there was a saying. Paris Island, the jewel of the South, where little boys go to die and become resurrected as men.
