The Vietnam War is arguably the most controversial military intervention in American history. It was objectively disastrous for everyone involved, and ever since, nearly every film about it has been at least somewhat critical of it. Even We Were Soldiers (2002), which offers a more nuanced view of the war, does well at portraying the futility of it. But while most films critical of it use drama to expose its moral quandaries (Platoon clip), one film stands out for often using humor instead (clip). Really dark humor. Here’s everything you need to know about the classic anti-war film, Full Metal Jacket.
Not only are there so many freaking war movies out there, but there’s A LOT of actually pretty good ones. Full Metal Jacket definitely stands out as a good one. Strangely, though, other Vietnam War films continue to get way more love from critics and just are more popular over all. And yet, while Full Metal Jacket seems to become increasingly overshadowed by other great war films in recent years, it has still had a long-lasting impact on how many people view not just war, but joining the military.
35 years later, we still laugh at this film…even though we might feel guilty laughing. Hartman’s rants, in particular, continue to provide countless opportunities for memes, despite being pretty offensive today. Full Metal Jacket, in fact, may be a big reason why we still accept the brutal nature of boot camp, strangely enough. There is even evidence the boot camp scenes may have even inspired more Marines to enlist. The line “Me love you long time. Me so horny.” ultimately became a catchphrase and was sampled in rap songs.
But we all still recognize that this is a serious film. Full Metal Jacket managed to not only raise awareness of the brutality of combat, but the harrowing nature of abuse recruits can endure. It doesn’t have a “happy ending.” There is not much of a resolution other than just being alive.
And while the film is technically an “anti-war” film, Kubrick never referred to it as such, and today it’s one of those rare war films that both pacifists and veterans respect. Indeed, it’s probably the best war film ever made to capture the collective doublethink we tell ourselves about war. War is evil and absurd. War is necessary and noble. It’s a constant contradiction that this scene in particular captures. (peace button clip) Simply put, no other film seems to have captured the absurdity of war quite like Full Metal Jacket.
Which film should I cover for this series next?
Not in the mainstream, but Roberto Benigni's war movies, The Tiger in the Snow and Life is Beautiful (a dark dramatic comedy about the Holocaust - is that OK to say?) would be interesting movies to cover.

My uncle who served during the Tet offensive said he couldn’t remember any of the names of the men in his platoon. He watched FMJ 3x in a row one time and it was the closest thing he ever saw that depicted his experience accurately while allowing him to jog his memory. A masterwork of cinema.
I don't have interest with the movie videos in this channel but watching this makes me want to see more of this.

I remember when I went through, basic training, I wanted it to be more like Full Metal Jacket. I also remember our Drill Sergeant making jokes involving full metal jacket, such as grabbing one of the recruits rifles and screaming six inches private Pyle!

This movie does a lot to get across the intangible values of Marine Recruit Training that continue to stick around no matter how the curriculum changes
It’s pretty much universally seen as accurate amongst Marines, and it’s hard for me to word exactly why
I went to boot camp in 2015, and my experience differs greatly from what’s shown in the first half of the film… and yet it also comes across to me as being the same exact thing
It’s not just a label applied to us, there’s definitely something in recruit training that specifically makes people into Marines; and it’s captured in Full Metal Jacket

Before FMJ, there was 'The Boys in Company C', ALSO starred R. Lee Ermey as a loud SALTY Drill Instructor. Very funny and Compelling as well. Very few acknowledge that, THANK YOU.
I love that movie. I remember watching it as a kid back in the 90's with my dad and loving it. Amazing performances, score, writing, and cinematography. One of my favorite films ever. ✌️
What other Kubrick movies do you like Mr Beat, if any? My favourite is A Clockwork Orange. I love the message: does forcing someone to not have a choice in being good or evil mean you have free will? Themes of good and evil also utilised in Full Metal Jacket among most of his movies in one way or another post The Killing. Great video!

Hey Mr.Beat! I think you said it best in the end on the video: this movie is about the absurdity of the war. Especially with the "comedic" parts which I think demonstrate further the stupidity of the war isntead of being just comedic relief.

*Spoilers* I remember the lack of resolution. Scenes don't linger or transition smoothly. The cut between scenes and tones in a snap. Like the killing of the sniper girl is suddenly cut to the soldiers singing about Micky Mouse while walking the battlefield. Sergeant's death is the only form of resolution, and really the only scene that lingers and waits. This makes it a unique film among the many greats.
Also, this is a good summary, especially the bit about how the dark comedy plays with the themes in ways I didn't consider before

I was in the Marine Corps from 1988 to 1992. I didn’t see this movie until after I went to boot camp.
I knew at a young age I wanted to serve in the military. There were two movies that influenced that decision. Patton, and Heartbreak Ridge.
My favorite anti war movie is Apocalypse Now.
If I could request a film to do a video on, to would be Groundhog Day. Especially since we’re less than a month from that day.

CORRECTION: There were NO soldiers featured in this movie!
Soldiers are usually just kids despite being of legal age. They went from their post-WWII American life of relative comfort to "fight for our freedom" but at the end of the day they really represented how silly it was for any of us to be there in the first place and how no matter what these were still just kids. I think that's partially what the movie is telling us. Dr. Strangelove was also a comedy but it's more about how silly the Cold War was. Both films also touch on how wars can have a profound impact on the psychological wellbeing of young men.
Dr. Strangelove is probably another film I will cover for this series, actually

I understand this is seen as an anti-war movie. That being said, when I saw it in the theater for the first time, I was a sworn pacifist. This movie, along with and starting with The Deer Hunter (on video - early in 1980s), then Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Hearts of Darkness, Casualties of War and later, We Were Soldiers (after reading the book... And, in my opinion, a good one) things began to change. After reading more books, articles, reports and watching documentaries, my view on war and my entire life view had changed. Not sure that war is necessary, but it seems to be inevitable (see current invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation and Putin - Slava Ukraini!) and must be prepared for AND paid for AND supported AND practiced (unfortunately...). Thanks for this timely (for me...), well-though out and worthwhile look at one of my favorite (is that OK to say?) war movies, Mr. Beat! And, thanks and R.I.P. to R. Lee Ermey...
