Great re-harmonization & great performance as expected! These guys are all virtuoso grade musicians in their prime so I would expect nothing less. As a pre boomer male from Chicago I remember when this song was 1st released. Although I was fortunate enough not to live it some of my friends weren't so lucky so I witnessed this deprivation on a daily basis in my youth. That's why I'm surprised that they sanitised this song by leaving out one of the most powerful and potent verses in the song. For me this reflects a lack of integrity on the part of everyone connected to the production including Stevie Wonder who must have had final approval. This song is a mini documentary of the conditions then and rapidly returning now! It's a song of protest to be heard and acted upon, not some happy little ditty! One of the 1st of its kind! For me this could have been killer if they would have fully embraced the gravity of the original work! That said it's still not too bad Ha Ha!
Couldn't have said it any better. The context of the lyrics matters and the musicality seems to matter more here. Should've just done an instrumental the whole way through or choose a different song to cover.
They left the entire story of what the song is about out! If they didn't want to do a song discussing racism, poverty. and the "justice" system, they should've picked another song.
@@HannahBanahah-zo8xs Wow! Someone that shares my concerns! Didn't expect validation of my views. Thanks or as I now say in the UK "Cheers"! They did. However, make a mini musical reference to "Signed sealed delivered". I wonder what they would have done with that little ditty, Ha Ha!?
So, Jeff my friend, here we go again. Amazing of course, seconding everything you said, but I was also so blown away by Jonah’s singing, his brilliance and respect to the original. It’s hard to find any singer doing a Stevie song this beautiful, and I’m sure Stevie will listen to it. One question, do you think they’ve asked Stevie Wonder for his blessing to do this? Or you could ask Jonah next time if they had any communication with him? In my mind, being as old as I am, Stevie Wonder has always been the best singer of all times, together with his songs. Anecdote: I jumped school in 1976 and began working in a record store in August, and soon after ”Songs in the key of life” came out. Still remember what an out of this world experience that album was. Hope you had the time to read the credits, the craziest so far, especially the schedule for celebrating Henrik’s 40:th birthday. Hilarious!

Your comment about learning their own cover to be able to do the video shoot and make it look perfect is the same thing that i have heard Audra, the lead voclist from First to Eleven talk about as well. They do the same thing for their videos. This song is sort of laid back, for being Dirty Loops, isn't it, or is it just so in my head? Nice form of laid back, indeed! It is so nice hearing you talk about Aron, Henrik, and Jonah! Thanks for expressing it so well!
Here we go again!!! I so love their take on classics of different styles their incredible musical knowledge which expresses itself in the reharmonization and all the rhythmic shenanigans they are able to pull off. To be frank (I´m an old bloke) this stuff and also their "Phoenix" project speaks more to me than the newest 2 songs "Run Away" and "When The Time Is right". There is too much happening on these ones for me, although masterly done, no question. When it comes to DL reviews, there is only one who I put on 1st place and that´s you Jeff! Btw - and this is linked to DL and MJ amongst many other artists that shaped my musical life - today I learned that the great Quincy Jones died today, Oct 4th with the age of 91... man what a titan he was!!! Rest In Peace. You lived your life to the absolute fullest devoting it to music and supporting so many people which chose their way to being artists.

I agree, it seems shooting the videos is the hardest part of the DL work flow. It's interesting to see how their music has developed over the years. It seems to me it started out as an earnest attempt at mainstream pop success, and over the years they have adapted to the fact that a large part of their fan base consists of musicians. Of course they haven't abandoned pop, but they do appear to play to their strengths - they know what type of bones to throw us. Thankfully it's a large enough target group. But I still think they nab their share of "civilians".
I love how they always mix the snare like +1.5dB from where you might expect... and he hits the drums pretty hard, so there's always a nice snappity thwack from the snare in their tunes...
No doubt you would have gone back to have a closer look at the credits Jeff? If so, you would be so amused as I was at the telling of events at Henrik's fortieth. Sounds like it would have been a hoot. 🎉🎉
09:12 Regarding their humble nature - I am thinking this is the Scandinavian upbringing. Generally Nordic people don’t like to boast, but prefer to let their work speak for itself.
Now here's the thing, I've looked at just about all the reactions to this amazing rendition by Dirty Loops (yours first of course Jeff 😋) and still no-one has queried the toilet roll at the front of Aaron's kit? What's that all about? 🤨
Hey Peter, I’m no drummer whatsoever, but the toilet paper roll could have to do with a quote from Funkadelic’s song ‘What Is Soul?’, where they mention something being rolled up in toiletpaper…. But then, also maybe not at all! ☺️ Also, some drummers (and they say, nothing works just quite like it) have used large amounts of toilet paper to dampen their sound. Here Dirty Loops are sitting in the same room (just for that vid), and Aron’s 🔥 playing most likely would be blowing Jonah’s and Henrik’s ears off, would he not muffle his drum sounds with copious amounts of toilet paper 🤣😂 Oh my god, these guys, honestly ;)
