I've been a professional drummer for 46 years. I've played ALL styles of music both live and in the studio. But I have to say that in all of my musical life, in all the bands I've been blessed to play and collaborate with, this "Follow the Light" track has just completely blown me away. The amazing "pocket" that these folks were able to establish is like NOTHING I've ever experienced. Especially given the fact that I understand that they didn't even record this video in the same studio with each other. Dirty Loops was home in Sweden, and Cory Wong (who plays with such funky precision) was in Minneapolis with his horns. They are all completely outstanding musicians, but that BASS!! THE BASS!! I hope he was standing near a bucket because the FUNK was just dripping off his hands. The triplet-slaps at the end of some of his phrases slayed me. His solo was on another planet. Him and the drummer (I've seen his solo in "Work Shit Out" and he's completely GOLDEN) are joined at the hip! I've watched this video about 11 times, and it drains me each time. MASTERPIECE!
Completely agree! I've been fanatical about certain fusion bands and drummers over the years, but this track, oh my god is just sooooo satisfying. I'm hearing new things in there all the time , the production is also insanely good
I think we need a new name for that display of skill … I’mma call them Trippillions from now on…cos I heard millions of things comin out of his right hand ha ha ha

Cory and Henrik talked about this album on Cory’s podcast. The craziest part about this is it was filmed in different locations, dirty loops was filmed and recorded in Sweden, and Cory and the horns replicated the sound stage and filmed/recorded their parts in the states.
That's the universal reaction to that intro: nodding in approval of the pretty chords, okay here comes the drum fill, and here c-- WTF just happened?!"
I had the amazing privilege of seeing dirty loops play live at a 200 person venue in Vegas a bunch of years ago and it was basically 90 straight minutes of me making that exact same face you were making. They we so ridiculously tight and they were still a 3 piece in those days. Easily one one the most jaw dropping feats of musicianship I’ve ever witnessed.

[Dirty Loops fan re-watching this reaction 8 mos later] I have stumbled across your comment & "sweet fecking Osmodeus" from this point forward is my new favorite descriptor! (But I had to look it up, lol!)
Check out Turbo. The baritone sax is off the charts. Now the fun: this was recorded in Minnesota and Sweden. Cory and Aron coordinated the camera placements the similar backgrounds; besides being the main writers. Go back through that horn section (all players) many played with Prince. Grace Kelly is a wind instrument wormhole in and of herself. The horns play with Cory, Vulfpeck , Fearless Flyers etc. Just watch Cory’s podcast with Henrik, Cory explains the whole process, the backing tracks they created, and coordination with Aron.
Henrik Linder has a great explanation for his slapping triplet technique on the Scott's Bass Lessons YT channel. Two hammer ons and then a slap which is usually followed by the same with a pop to create a sextuplet. Pretty similar to Victor Wooten technique and Tosin Abasi selective picking.
I saw you got tears in your eyes when Henrik dropped his lick with the pedal, then went to his slappy style ! This bass player is OUT of this world. Great review by the way, love your work
I've only recently gotten into Cory Wong and Dirty Loops because of my love for funky rhythmic guitar playing... and yes... monsters all the way around. This track made me look up Henrik Linder's name (Bass) as well!!! Keep up the great vids Michael!!!
@@Guitargate Have you seen Fearless Flyers? Cory and the same Brass section with Joe Dart, Mark Lettieri (Michael's playing his signature guitar) and Nate Smith. So funky, so fast, so tight.

Welcome to the ocean of genius that is The Dirty Loops! Man, you've got a lot of brain-melting TH-cam videos of these guys that, if you're anything like the rest of the internet, are going to leave your jaw welded to the floor. First - thanks for your reaction of this song. Loved it! My face fell just like yours so many times through that one. The whole album is amazing. Even more - the two bands were video'd on two different continents. According to the Wongs Notes podcast, they geeked out and matched camera models, heights, light types (Cory had to rent some from Cali) and more all to make it look like they taped it in the same room. Great stuff, though. Thanks for all that you do, Michael.
