I've been doing small engine work for over 25 years. Learned a lot from repair manuals and started working on friends and neighbors mowers and trimmers making a little extra money on side. I love this kind of work. Its challenging to me. I love your videos and sometimes I learn something new or different.

Liked your video immensely, great point on block of wood! Mine’s a little more complicated because I have a blade stop on mine. Sure would like a video for that type of mower.
When you were talking about when you have to change the blade which way to tilt the lawn mower, the one I come up with is to always point the spark plug up in the air that way the oil won't ever run out the exhaust or into the carburetor and the opposite of the spark plug is always the flat part of the engine or the dipstick usually goes in. Cuz in my younger years of working on small engines I had no idea that the oil would run into the carburetor or out the exhaust so lesson learned. Something else I have always done is put just a little high temperature grease or anti-seize on the end of my finger and smeared it on the inside of the blade adapter that way if you ever have to take it off again it comes off easy. Anyways, I enjoy your videos like always.
I have used a block of wood a couple times but usually just try to hold on tight. I imagine that you see many messed up blades and so forth in your business. I always take the time to police up the yard first. Thanks for this video as it showed me how much easier it would be if I had a table to work from.
Thanks for all your insight, I have worked on all kinds of mowers, and my weed eater (McCulloch mac 60 1980 model) thanks to you it is running strong again. You most likely think why waste your time on that! My father in-law gave it to me in 1985 and he is now gone but this weed trimmer I call Grandpa. I had a problem with the ignition coil and you showed me the business card method and I'm so glad that I checked the spark with a large gap (.060 v8 plug) it jumped it and nice blue spark! gapped and installed the correct spark plug and away we go so thank you for helping me with Grandpa means a lot to me. This means you can teach an old dog new tricks! Your Great!
Great presenter - while knowledgeable and experienced in small engine repairs, doesn’t come off as typical know-it-all. Enjoy hearing explanations about how parts function and which common fail points to look for. As none of my lawn equipment is less than 20 years old (my Trac-Vac was built in 1978 and our “new” snowblower is from 1995) appreciate maintenance tips. Don’t believe modern stuff being made better (except for B/O stuff perhaps), keeping old stuff running good ecological choice.

I truly love the removing the spark plug completely. That is an amazing idea!!! I'm going to instruct people that way from now on. Thanks for a great safety tip. I have actually had mowers come in that wouldn't run because the key had sheared in the blade adapter. Replace the blade and adapter and everything was right as rain. Gotta love the super light aluminum flywheels on some engines.
Too much chance of debris getting in the combustion chamber. Just take the wire off to disable the engine.
@@davidmorse8432 you would have to try pretty hard to get something into the combustion chamber like that. I just pull the wire but for some people I like the idea of telling them to pull the plug then there is no chance of an issue. I would rather risk the tiny chance of something getting into the cylinder that would likely blow through on start up where it's a four stroke not a two stroke, than have someone get injured
Your right ! A friend of my pull only the cable, on an old machine, the cable return to the plug and don't get aware of that, the thing start, loss a finger.

Well now that was a interesting video and what a very useful tip just pull the lawn mower straight back handles down with a weight on them. I never thought of that for some reason good to know.
I'm from Australia but her tips & expertise are probably still pertinent. That apart I happen to run a USA mower because my wife is from SLC & she brought it across with her. Apart from that she is clearly a smart cookie & knows how to teach.

Just a quick note of thanks for your recommendation of the trimmer head 400 it's a 1000 times better than the stihl head . Also echoes black diamond 105 trimmer line is the best I've found. Congrats on 20 grand. Thank you again!!!

After 30+ years of teaching small engine repair and seeing literally 100’s of mowers, I can definitely say that the #1 place to apply never seize is the pto end of the crankshaft along with the threads on the bolt that holds the blade to the adapter. The acid from the grass along with the moisture are drawn into the hole in the blade adapter by capillary action and in most cases will freeze the blade adapter to the crankshaft so tight that heat from an oxy acetylene torch and a gear puller will be required to remove it. ALWAYS assemble small engine parts with anti seize.

Anti seize that stuff! And that 1/2" impact will tear that UP! 3/8ths is the biggest thing you should touch the mower with.

I am "frozen so tight... etc." IF i choose to put the torch to it; please advise on this: do I heat just the adapter, if possible, then try to freeze it, or just wrestle the hot adapter off? Any clue? Why bother? To try to straighten the shaft and to put on a new adapter. Old side of the road
B & S. never should have started, but into it so deep now, I'm interested in HOW to get the adapter off.
@@DScottDay I always heated the adapter, but before starting the torch have your puller adjusted to fit from the adapter to whatever you are using in the end of the crankshaft ( bolt, piece of shafting, or etc.). It would help greatly if you center drilled or at least put a dimple in the end of whatever you are using to pull the adapter over as most pullers have some sort of projection to fit in center drilled holes used in production of shaft type items. Whatever you are using remember that the adapter must slide over it. You can assemble this puller setup and put tension on it before starting the torch so you are not fumbling around with hot metal parts, but try and keep heat away from the puller jaws. Use a big torch tip. A small rosebud tip would be ideal. The idea is to get as much heat possible around the hole in the adapter as quickly as possible. Secure the engine or have another person hold it down. Easiest to work at eye level. Do not heat the exposed crank shaft. That would cause it to expand. You want to heat only the adapter to get it’s hole and thus grip on the crankshaft to expand. You may have to get the adapter pretty hot to loosen its grip on the crankshaft. And for God’s sake wear eye protection and gloves and have no carb or gas tank in sight. Watch for the slightest movement (for your mental well being at the time). Some adapters let go relatively soon, and others need to remain heated until they are almost completely off. I never tried cooling (thermal shocking) any of them off. The reason being you are dealing with the end of an iron casting (the crankshaft) which is very susceptible to cracking under such circumstances. I know, I know the journal surfaces are hardened before grinding at the factory, but that is a form of induction hardening and more or less just forms a hard case which they then grind. Stay with it, I never ever had an adapter that didn’t come off, and I removed hundreds. Let me know when you are successful, and do not get so excited to have it off that you pound the sump cover over the rust on the exposed portion of the crankshaft without sanding to prevent scoring the sump bearing surface or it will leak oil there forever more once reassembled!!
I just changed the blade on my mower that I bought last year, and it was installed backwards at the factory! I have thick grass, so I thought the jams in the chute were because of that. After I orientated the blade correctly, it handles grass much better.

Very Good- using a heavy object to hold down handle when changing blade. I learned that a long time ago. All these Part Time Mechanics suggested left side or right side. I noticed smoke would come out of muffler. You have a New Subsciber now :)

Great stuff! My father in lay has a troybuilt crab style mower and that thing constantly throws sticks on other objects up and causes the drive belt to jump and ruin it before he can even get the engine shut down. Be has a twin sister and that has thee identical mower and it is the same way. I just installed him a new belt and he mowed over the 4th holiday. He is going to sell it and get a cub cadet crab style and be rid of it. I'd by it but his yard is really nice compared to mh hill of rocks and sticks here south of Benton Arkansas. I'm afraid it would be worse here. My 20 year old craftsman ayp type hydro keeps on chugging and I've got to where I can fix about everything on it. Great video! Keep them coming!

My mower has those on adapter, I thought man those are tiny they should make those bigger. Didn’t think they are like that to save engine if obstruction is hit. That’s a good thing!

Things are much cleaner now than in times past. Even with my own mower, its never an issue of oil leaking or other slime to deal with. In this video, the OHV cover leaks oil and once its sealed up, not dirty at all.. I used to repair heavy equipment and farm machinery, some of the machines were nothing but a grease pit caked up with all types of gunk.
If the plug isn't 5/8 or 11/16, try a 3/4. I changed hundreds of Champion CJ-8 plugs on flat head mower engines. I actually have a 3/4 inch spark plug socket. A video on checking for bent blades would help a lot. I used to have people bring in blades damn near tied in a knot, wanting to know if they could be straightened! Proper oil type and weight would be another. Great job!

For those not willing to do all that or if you like in a rustbelt like me and don't feel like cutting the adaptor off you can just put the blade on with 2 regular 3/8 washers and drill out the adaptor for 2 1/4" bolts were the pins were. This is how most of the old mowers had there blade put on.
Hey there Chickanic... wanted to report on the "nipples" count in the video. 1st, you have a great style of presentation with your relaxed outfits, flip flops, and like the many of us, working in your backyard or where ever our stuff breaks down. Thank you for keeping it real. I counted nine occurrences however, one sounded singular "nipple" and not "nipples". Don't know if the give away is still offered, but the challenge mentioned in the oil seal replacement inspired me to watch and count even though I'm familiar with changing blades. Funny you mentioned about blade orientation. The dude I bought one of my deere mowers from used selling point that blades were new. At quick glance, the cutting edge looked new. The mower was filthy and when I removed the deck to service and put gator blades on, discovered they were on upside down and as a result, almost ruined the star because the washer size and the curvature of the mounting part of the blade, allowed the blades to move(a disaster in the making). I managed to secure new blades on (correctly) without replacing spindles. Thanks again.
