  • Thank you so much to Fizz Fairy for sending me their True Lilac fragrance oil to try! I'm OBSESSED!

    - True Lilac Fragrance Oil
    Today I attempt something I wanted to do for a long time: make lilac soap. The scent of lilac is intoxicating and nostalgic to many, which is why items scented in lilac sell so well. However, lilac fragrance oils can be tricky to work with, so I offer my tips on how to set yourself up for success with using a fragrance oil reviewers have confirmed to be accelerators of cold process soap. I run into a few surprises along the way!

    When using these naughty behaving fragrances - I use more water & hand stir everything - the lye, colorant & fragrance - this give me a little longer before it starts to really thicken up. I have also learned to only use 1 color when doing fragrances that can seize your batch.

  • @teriosentoski3544

    I hand stir in my floral fragrances and add my color to the oils before adding my lye, blend the most minimal possible. I haven't had one totally seize, and I have had some pretty swirls with lilac

    I think maybe because you are used to doing large batches now, this one was somewhat overblended for the size. I would not have blended nearly as much with a small batch. Also, Kaolin clay speeds up trace as well. For small batches or with scents I know will speed trace fast, I hand blend colours and scents.

    Florals have a really particular order so that you can be successful with them. More liquid oils and water absolutely, no more than 20% coconut oil really helps. Soaping at 85 to 95 degrees can help and add the colorant (double the amount for that violet so it doesn't soap gray like that) to the oils and then only 'stir' in the lye solution. It's at that point only stick blend very very little. Spraying it with 99% rubbing alcohol will definitely help with soda ash too.
    Honestly, you may want to consider getting a different stick blender. Yours has a large bell shape that is keeping the mixing in one spot under the bell rather than mixing the batter back into the whole batch. Look for a stick blender that has the holes on the side of the head so it can mix the whole batter together.
    Hope that all makes sense and helps you. Best of luck!

      That's good advice about the bell shaped blender, I didn't even notice that or realize there are different shapes lol.

    Working in layers with difficult FO’s is a good idea and using more water also helps (I like 2:1 water: lye ratio. Lilac is one of my top sellers. Dark purples can turn grayish. It looks like you also got a partial gel.

    • @JerikaZimmerman

    Its a nice soap. When you used just one color. The color can you put in the liquid oils before you put the lye solution in your oils. This save you time with the stick blender. :)

    I soap at a low temp, like 75F, and blend to emulsion. I didn't increase my water, I kept it at 28%.I was able to do a four layer with activated charcoal in traditional rose FO with absolutely no issues. I was actually surprised by how easy it ended up being, and I think the biggest thing was working with smaller sections of the soap. I worked fast, mixed fast, poured fast and honestly...wasn't too bad.

    Just loved it! I’m new at soap making and I been having a lot of rising and seizing with no clue on what to do 😣 Another reason why my recipes are even more troublesome, is because I’m using goat milk. I have been trying to make the attempt of making your activated charcoal and lavender soap and I just ruin it all.

    I make Lilac soap a lot and have never had any trouble with it. Additional mica would have given you a lilac color and I have tried 2 different things that work if your soap is accelerating to fast. The first is to add just a little more water and the second is to add 1 teaspoon of powdered sugar to the mix. Both work for me.

  • @catalina8677

    Jerika! I just did this same Lilac Soap and it seized too! I tried to do colors…. 😄. It was plopped into my mold. It smells amazing tho! I also did Peony. And my swirls were plopped of color. Florals just do that. I also think that Olive Oil is NOT what it used to be. I really think they are cutting it with something…. Same old recipe, and seizing with every other fragrance. No joke. I am at a loss. I finally just blend to light emulsion and add colors & fragrance and work like a mad woman. Stress!

  • @meemawsangels
    @meemawsangels 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another thing to try if you are using just one color is to temper your fragrance oil with the oils when they are about 15 minutes away from the temp you want to use. Put your fragrance right in the oils before mixing. This has helped me in the past with some unusually finicky fragrances.

    Jerika, that looked like a false trace. When soaping cooler like 80 or below it happens. I just did lilac a week ago, put the clay in with the fragrance, stirred the fragrance in slowly as I blended and it was great. No problems. Got 2 colours. Fragrance was from Windy Point.

    I'm glad you said it was a sick grey color. I thought something went wrong with the color on my phone! I make Lilac soap all the time and never had it sieze, although it does speed up trace. I've never had my mica go weird colors like that. Especially a purple. I wonder if it's the fragrance (where you bought it from?)
    Jill

    • @Soul.7
      @Soul.7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it’s several things I think.
      Not enough mica powder used here (and not enough time to add more due to the thickening unfortunately); over stick blending for the fragrance sensitivity; and too much hard Oils (coconut/cacao). But it’s all good, good learning for all of us, a beautiful soap creation none the less. And I love the colour Jerika. Bless you sweetheart, keep doing your thing! 🤩
      My learning keynotes here are - spatula stirring more, stick blending less, adding more mica powder to the oil AND the fragrance to the oils and mixing them all up, BEFORE adding the Lye Solution. Thank you for including us in your soap kitchen adventure, seriously, gratitude gratitude gratitude. xxx
