This is it! Today the weather looks good to go do some heli-hiking on Franz Josef Glacier!
We get geared up at the Franz Josef Glacier Guides base then a quick walk through the rainforest brings us to the heli pad for our Franz Josef Glacier Heli-Hike! We get inside the helicopter at Franz Josef and away we go to the Franz Josef Glacier!
We get incredible views of the Franz Josef Glacier Valley before landing on the Franz Josef Glacier itself. Here, our guide is going to take us over, under and through the Franz Josef Glacier.
The Franz Josef Glacier Tour allows us to walk along crevasses and through narrow ice corridors all while learning so much about the Franz Josef Glacier which is one of the most accessible glaciers in the world.
Franz Josef Glacier is ever-changing so the heli-hike tours are always going to be different with our guide having to create new and safe paths for each tour group.

I wanna do this! it's on the bucket list. You know 30 years ago, when I was a kid, the glaciers (franz and fox) went all the way down to the bottom of the mountain. You didn't have to take a helicopter to walk on them.
Wow! Well after seeing all the signs on the Fox Glacier Valley Hike th-cam.com/video/p4OAltgdxrQ/w-d-xo.html showing how fast the glaciers retreated, we are not surprised! It's insane!

We may do this. We are going to have our 7 year old with us though, so I'll have to check into age restrictions
Right! Otherwise there are quite a few awesome hikes around and even an awesome kayaking tour (see our video on Kayaking in Lake Mapourika)
We plan on doing lots of hiking (we'll bring along plenty of candy bribes for the 7 year old!). I hope to get out kayaking too, we'll have to see what the trip brings.

Which Heli-Hike is more interesting? Fox-Glacier or Franz-Josef?

Thanks Ronalyn :) We visited it around September, but you can heli-hike on the glaciers year-round (weather permitting, of course). What else do you have planned for your trip in NZ?
I did a hike on the Franz Josef Glacier in 2007 but it was not the heli-hike and it took closer to maybe 6-7 hours to complete. Is the heli-hike the only option now? I'm wondering if it's because of how much the glacier has retreated over the years. :(
Yep Robin did this tour as well back in the days. Sadly this is not an option anymore, the Heli-hike is your only choice :( Fun views though!
May I know where did you guys park your campervan while you are at the hike?
The company has a parking available for travellers, we parked at the holiday park where we were staying and just walked to the tour office which was about 3min walk :)

Hi, may i know how long does it take to do the hike?
It really depends on the route, you will be on the ice for about 1.5-2hours
Ohhh no you should of walked it all not taken the helicopter. I did it about 8 years ago and never ever regretted hiking it.
With the glacier's retreat, hiking is not an option anymore :( I miss it too!
