Franz Josef & Fox Glacier | South Island, New Zealand Vlog 5/5

  • In this final South Island road trip vlog, we made our way from Wanaka over to Glacier Country in hopes of seeing Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier. The drive there was super awesome as it was raining so gushing waterfalls were in full force all along our route.
Our Airbnb was a private room in Takoha and Simon's home located in Franz Josef Glacier. It's a very short drive to Franz Josef Glacier from their accommodation as well as restaurants, a convenience store and some other local attractions. It's also only a 30 min drive to Fox Glacier too placing it in a great location. Warm, friendly hosts and shared spaces to enjoy with other guests in their lovely home too.
    Takoha & Simon's Airbnb
    www.airbnb.co.nz/rooms/17424866
Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier are two of the most accessible glaciers around but sadly because of climate change and global warming, they have retreated significantly over the years making it much more difficult to see these incredible natural wonders.
There are still a few ways to see Franz Josef and Fox Glacier though. From Heli-hikes that take you on scenic flights to the glaciers and land on them so you can actually walk on them, to ice-climbs even. These activities are pretty pricey (although special once-in-a-lifetime kind of awesomeness we're sure) but if you don't have the funds to splash out, there are a few free options to see the glaciers too, which is what we did.
Beware the weather can be quite temperamental so it can be sunny then raining the very next moment! It happened to us a few times but thankfully we were able to visit both Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier too over the 3 days we stayed there.
A fantastic spot to see Fox Glacier from a distance that we highly recommend (and was recommended to us) is Peak Viewpoint near Gillespies Beach Rd (a turn from Cook Flat Rd). We had a brilliantly clear day to admire Fox Glacier from afar.
We also did a short walk at Lake Matheson called Jetty Lookout before we went to do the Fox Glacier Valley Walk. On a very still day you can get a brilliant reflection of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman on the glacial lake but unfortunately we didn't have that during the time we visited!
The Fox Glacier Valley walk was a much quicker hike than expected but we preferred the "peak viewpoint" overall.
We hope you've enjoyed our 5 part South Island, New Zealand road trip vlogs and got some ideas for things to see and do in the South Island of NZ.

Ohhhhh, my home!! You guys are funny, great video I enjoyed it. Rain, rain, rain, rain... you're in a rainforest, that's what happens. The weather is unpredictable, the thunderstorms and lightening are spectacular! But when we get our summer, it gets pretty hot and we all head for the lake. Or some of us brave the meltwater of the glacier and jump in the waiho!!

Ooo wow did you grow up here? That must have been amazing. Such a unique part of New Zealand 🇳🇿 I think the rain made the drive over the most jaw droppingly beautiful drive we've ever done. I can totally relate to the emotions you felt about the glaciers. I first saw them in 2006 then again in 2015. It broke my heart to see the dramatic change. We hear about climate change all the time, but seeing real evidence of it was a bit of a wake up call. It affected me so much that I've since dramatically changed my lifestyle and my diet. I've also quit being a dentist to study environmental science. My hope is that my children will still get to see the glaciers 💪💚 Thank you for the brilliant content as always. I love your energy, your videos always bring a smile to my face 😊

Lil by lil hopefully it all builds up and makes significant changes 🤞

Where's the closest glacier for you Chandy? It's good for more people to see it and realise how much they've melted and at such an alarmingly fast rate that they can't replenish themselves. Maybe then it'll motivate more and more people to make a change coz even individual effort on a big scale can make a difference ❤️🌏

That sucks that the weather wasn't on your side on Day 2.. and the start of Day 3 looks ok (so far). Peak Point was so stunning, and love that thing you use to line up the mountains. They have a similar one at the Minarets in Mammoth Lakes. It's really cool. The moss all around is really pretty, and we agree your first vantage point was really great!! Airbnb is si cute, cabin style! so awesome, and breakfast included? That is a treat.
Walking to the glacier a bit more. Yes, all the glaciers are melting at a rapid tie, we were happy to know there was 1 glacier in Alaska that is one of the only ones that aren't melting, and instead, gaining space.

Melting so fast they can't replenish themselves and considering the roles they play for our planet it's quite the startling realisation that we just all have to do better and play our parts in reducing our carbon footprints but so do businesses too 🤞🌏

Wow, I'm surprised at how far back the glaciers are now. I saw them in 1988, when they were relatively easy to see on a rare rainless day (the West Coast gets around 10m of rain per annum - that's 10,000mm, or for those still using feet: 32' 9" (393") Of. Rain. Every. Year.

    • @PeterandYen
      @PeterandYen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Peter and Yen!! That's so awesome you guys are checking out this Glacier area.. and WOW... the water falls all around you!! So amazing and intense. Love your AirBnB today. That's cool you got a room at this place. So cute. Nice that breakfast is included at $50 USD/night is definitely affordable. That really sucks that the glacier has retreated a lot. Global warming IS a real thing, and it's so important that everyone reduce their carbon footprint.

Yea good value Airbnb with lovely friendly hosts too 🙂 it does suck ay the glaciers melting so fast globally. It's a very confronting reality seeing what they use to be like and what they are today. Considering their role of what they do for the planet, hopefully we can turn things around 🤞🌏

Hey awesome peoples 😎 !. Great video as always and typical west coast weather ! Try doing it on a motorbike ..lol...I discovered a new meaning of wet. Glaciers melting away...share your feelings of sadness and if you have time check out the song by Oceanlab...'Miracle'. Great meaning in this song and even though released in 2008 they knew exactly what the future holds. Wifey and I just finished an epic Abel tasman trip including kayaking...beautiful part of the country ❤. Stay awesome out there guys 👦 👧. Kia kaha Mototoboy x x x.

Hey mo totoboy! 😁👋 Oh man that must've been an insane ride doing it on a motorbike!! Would've been pretty dangerous too I imagine since the roads are wet and windy! Cheers for the recommendation, we'll check it out! And yes we hope that by showing how much and how alarmingly fast the glaciers have melted it'll help people to realise we gotta make a change and every small bit counts. Individual changes on a large scale can make a difference but we also need the big corporations to do their part too and be more environmentally responsible. Change like this is exceptionally slow but hope it'll snowball (excuse the pun!) And gain a momentum that'll make a difference in not destroying our planet ❤️🌏 Abel Tasman and kayaking nice! Glad you had a wonderful time 🙂👍👍 take care and have an awesome weekend! Thanks for always watching and supporting our channel 😁👋

In 2008-2009, my brother lived in Wanaka for just over 6 months to learn how to fly helicopters (apparently, it was cheaper to live in NZ for 6 months and learn how to fly there than to take the same lessons here in Europe, but really he did it to get a good taste of New Zealand). He flew us very close to one of the glaciers there (don't ask me which one). Very impressive to see them from up close.
Then again, it feels kind of silly to use a CO2-spewing device to have a closer look at a glacier that is melting because of global warming...
Here's to hoping electric planes and helicopters quickly become usable!
Anyway, thanks again for the lovely video! Love it!

    • @PeterandYen

Wow must be really expensive for lessons in Europe! 😮 What an amazing experience it must've been to fly close to the glaciers though! We've seen photos and videos of people on the glaciers too, it does look incredible 🙂 Electric planes and helicopters would be brilliant.. with electric cars, busses and bikes already here's hoping for a cleaner future soon 🤞 Btw congrats again on your wedding soon Bert!!
