My advice to not only Audrey but anyone reading this: wait a year. No joke. Sometimes we feel like we want a trending item soley because our eye got so used to seeing it (through fashion videos, instagram, pinterest, you name it) we perceive it as pretty and wish to integrate it in our wardrobe. However, this can change into "I've seen enough of it and I'm tired of it". This then often causes a massive wardrobe declutter and contributed to unnessecary consumption. If you still love it in a year however, go for it. Had the same experience with loafers. They came in style as trending a few years ago (like 2?) and I thought it looked great. Got my first pair this year however and I do not regret it. However I am glad I didn't go for the sweater vest when it was trending last year because now I am so not into that look compared to last year when I was literally searching for the "perfect one".

Love this advice. I've been trying this recently. When getting something I have never owned before.. a certain shoe, a top, a coat I tend to go for second hand items. I can test it. If I like it, then I'm happy to look into getting an investment piece that will last for years.

I'm sure you can find lots of great pieces in your own closet. What I love to do sometimes is to take inspiration from Pinterest for example then go to my closet and create an outfit inspired by a look I saw on Pinterest. It's fun, makes you be creative and think outside the box and the results are amazing!!

Love hearing your thought process on this. A word of caution about 30-35" long pencil skirts: they look elegant when you're standing up but they're a bear to walk and sit in. Forget climbing steps. I have three long pencil skirts that beautifully evoke the 1930s - three, acquired over time, because I kept forgetting why I didn't wear the older ones. I almost never wear them because they're so restrictive. If you buy an ultralong pencil skirt without the chance to try it on first, I recommend versions with a long slit or a cluster of kick pleats. They'd provide at least some space for normal movement.

When I tried to go upstairs, I had to lift the skirt above my knees to do that..... I donated it after a few months.

I never stopped wearing wide legged pants. The skinny pants phase didn’t work for me, as many trends don’t. So I wear what looks best on me.
Finding wide legged pants was challenging in the past few years so I did look to vintage and thrift sources.
Glad I’ll be able to find a new pair now. My wish list also includes a perfect pair of tall boots in a perfect shade of tan, chunkier heel, but nothing extreme.

Just a thought on the black skirt regarding comfort and a slim but easy fit. Consider high quality knitwear. I just added a black "sweater" merino wool pencil skirt to my wardrobe in the proportion you describe. Because it's knit, it moves with my body. It's heavy enough so that it drapes well and doesn't ride up or bunch. I'll probably mostly wear it casually with loose fitting sweaters, but I could definately dress it up.

Hi Audrey, your video helped me in an unexpected way. Although I love leather jackets and riding boots etc. I've realised that I can't wear those items because it doesn't fit into my lifestyle at all. I feel good that I have acknowledged that I love the look of those things, but that doesn't mean I need to own them. I'm embracing minimalism more and more, and instead of feeling loss that I should or shouldn't own certain beautiful things, I'm feeling acceptance after watching your video.

What a fun video, sharing what you are on the lookout for. Good point about the jeans and just saving them until they come around again. I never wore skinny jeans. I thought they looked odd on women unless they were only 15 years old and under 68 lbs. And I so admire your patience in waiting years for certain items. Just wow! I decided I wanted a trench coat this year, in that beautiful cinnamon color that is so popular. I spent about an hour online searching all the sites I could think of. The closest I could get was one from Nordstroms that was too long. Well, okay, I can have it tailored if I want, but the much bigger problem was sizing. I am so unhappy that many, many manufacturers are making clothing that they claim fits two sizes, like 8-10, or 12-14. Now, the vast majority of us are ONE size, and I could not find one trench coat that was listed with single sizes. The advertised medium would be too small, the advertised large would be too big. I ordered it anyway, it has yet to arrive. We'll see what happens when it gets here. Do you have this same problem?

These have been on my wish list for 1-2 years, so I'm seriously considering investing in them this time around: quality ponte knit pants in a very matte black fabric (I'm eyeing the Emerson Fry version), because these would be easy to style in fall and winter with a variety of shoes and oversize sweaters; high-waist jeans in a straight, slightly narrow leg and in a darker color with minimal detailing, and a minimal black split-neck polo/ collared sweater in a light fabric, either a very light wool or a medium-weight cotton (something I can comfortable tuck in and wear loose). Wishing everyone else luck on their wish list items!

Thank you so much, this was really helpful! I've been having a hard time with my fashions since I'm still in my early teens, so I'm a bit lost on what I should wear and what suits me. If I dress to basic and childish, it makes me feel horrible, but at the same time I cam't dress like too much of an adult with a lot of blazers and those type of stuff. I also don't have a huge selection of clothing and I find it hard to choose and buy pieces, because I'm still unsure of what I actually want. I also don't use my own money to buy clothes yet, so I can't get everything that I want and I have to really think about things before buying them. I'm also still growing so I wear through my things really quickly.

For me the leather trench is too reminiscent of the Matrix Movies/the 90's and will never lose that association. I would get sick of it or feel limited by it. The comment by Sasha is good-- to wait a year and see if you still want it. This is a bit extreme but Crocs came out when I was 10 or 11 years old and I absolutely did not want to wear them because I've always hated following the crowd/trends. In college, 10 years later, I bought my first pair (definitely not in style then) and fell in love with their comfort. My friends said they knew it was me from a 1/4 mile away bc they could see my maroon shoes... Now they're back in style💁‍♀

Great video! I'm so happy for the wider leg Silhouettes and jeans and pants these days. They are so much more comfortable in my opinion than skinny jeans. A few years ago I picked up my first trench coat in a silvery gray color that was water repellent. I was surprised how much I wore it. Then two years ago I thrifted a black one that was okay but not perfect and I only wore it for a year but I did get good use out of it instead of wearing a raincoat. This summer I thrifted a burgundy one and it's absolutely perfect for my body shape, coloring and height. It's such a joy to find that perfect piece that you can wear with confidence for many years to come. It's worth the search

🤩 Envious of your growing trench collection. 😉 Excellent observation about them. They're definitely not all water💧repellent. Got two wrap style trench coats from The Limited back in the 90s in navy & black that are perfect for my hourglass shape. They're lightweight enough that I can wear them almost year round 🔄. They still get mad compliments today. Neither are great in the rain🌧 , but luckily I live where that's not a big issue. Plus, there's always an umbrella☔️.
Was handed down two truly stunning ❄️ Winter weight trench coats〰️a long double breasted black Burberry & a vintage charcoal gray suede. They're so heavy (even without liners) that I can only wear a few times a year (unless 🧳traveling). 💯% worth the closet space.
Always on the 👀look out for another at local thrift shops, but something more suitable for my hot climate 🏜 & hot flashes🥵 .
      🤫Would adore one in burgandy🍷 , Barbie pink💗, or olive green🫒 .

Now I don't have to search for days to find a long length as the shorter style look current now. @@Julia29853 💐 That sorta thing is tricky for me too, esp. when you also consider the added dilemna of shoes. Although nude or skin toned sandals or slings would work.
😉I'm more confident in matchy match color mode, but am attempting to try monochromatic.
Also prefer more of a continuous column ↕️ of vertical color〰️ believing that it elongates my frame〰️but I do make exceptions.
🤔If your skirt is a mauve/cranberry tweed, see if you can match one of the color ways or "threads." If you go in the pink family, make sure the intensity of the tones in the top matches the bottom. For example, don't mix a warm (or dirty) pink tone with a cooler cranberry color tone. Otherwise, white, ecru, or dove gray would be a safe choice.

I already have baggy jeans, leather and knee high boots. The latter two are fall staples for me. My closet is full. I’m only filling gaps this year. And maybe getting one or two nice to haves.
On my wish list is a paisley shirt or blouse containing colours that will work with bottoms I already have.
I’m short of nice hoodies for wearing on walks. Since they’re often too long on me, I’ll be picking up a couple that end near the waist - short, not cropped, in navy or a lighter blue, and the highest quality I can find because I wear them so much.
I have turtlenecks in many colours and a couple of well-worn ones need to be replaced.
And I’m looking for a wider leather belt with an oval buckle in silver like I’ve seen on some of the fall runways. I usually buy belts secondhand but may splurge on a Sezane because I keep my belts forever.
I don’t need shoes this year but I’m considering getting a pair of Fluevogs. I wear so many neutrals and classics so it would be fun to have a pair of statement shoes.

Great ideas. I’m looking for a great pair of red trousers. I never really gravitate towards red but when I see them styled they look so classy and versatile…The brand The Office of Angela Scott has INCREDIBLE shoes; possibly the chunky ones you’re looking for. I love those masculine styles as well.
    Thanks and happy hunting!

I have already found a few things on my wish list. I got a camel colored sweater coat. It's nicely structured and light enough to wear in the desert. I also got a black leather jacket. Not a belted moto, but a slightly shaped one. I also got some cute brown leather booties (Western). I found a nice camel dupe for a Bottega Venetta clutch bag. I also got a Valentino dupe belt. I got a new little black dress and some cute black mule type heels. I am feeling very lucky this year and blessed.

I’m on a hunt for warm jacket that is slightly oversized and has shirt kind of cut. I also want to find a collarless long coat that’s made out of nylon with padding. I already have wool and cashmere coats, so will be nice to have something else for rainy weather.
I think I’ve already found some options, but will need to order them to try on and find the right size. Online shopping is a bumpy road. Also, it’s a bit harder for me because of my size. I’m very petite and have to shop at kids section, my usual fit is anything that’s sized between 10 and 12 years old (or between 140 and 152 cm height).

So about the shoes. I bought a pair of Solovair shoes like the one you have on your wishlist, and I absolutely love them. Exactly for what you were saying - they are a bit more masculine (in fact it's a unisex model), bit chunkier but still have that classic polished looked. Bought them roughly 1,5 year ago and for now it has been my most worn shoe, super comfortable, super practical, and fits with both dresses and pants, love them.
When it comes to the leather trenchoat tho... I mean, it looks amazing, trendy and all, but it's one of those trends I am afraid will go away. It's very 90s. So I would think about it a bit more, it's quite an expensive piece, are people really gonna wear them ones they won't be on trend?

I'm excited for the shoe trends this fall partly because I already own a lot of things that fit. I have a pair of men's Wolverine 1000 miler boots and a pair of Redwing Iron Rangers--I also have a number of oxfords including a pair of grey Sorel oxfords with a chunkier sole so altogether that helps me hit the chunky menswear inspired style without going full on trendy platform boot/shoes. I'm usually a skinny pant/jean person but I have been leaning into the slightly looser silhouette this fall. I already had a pair of Everlane cheeky jeans and added a pair of madewell perfect vintage jeans. This lets me change up the silhouettes of my outfits without again leaning too hard into wide leg styles that I don't like on myself. I already had a couple of pairs of looser trousers including Banana Republic joggers and pleated plaid pants. I'm expanding my fall color palette to include more grey and taupe that I can carry into spring. I've purchased 2 blazers (a Ralph Lauren herringbone and a Theory that has shots of color subtly woven in), 2 pairs of jeans, 2 purses and a pair of adidas sneakers. I'm still on the hunt for more perfectly taupe pieces.

I own 3 silk skirts in classy, muted prints. I am contemplating adding one or two more in solid colors to wear with beautiful chunky sweaters this season. Additionally, I am looking to add chunky, mid-heeled pumps. Unsure of my color choices at this point. Black Chelsea Booties (New from Clarks $40 - sale)

I am planning my trip wardrobe to the UK and Ireland in mid October. I have two slim turtlenecks and my black cashmere pullover and my longer Heather cashmere cardi. I got a black trench at M&S online. It is lovely and well made. It is knee length and I had a shorter light beige trench but it was shorter than I wanted for fall. I did baggy jeans in my past so not for me. Too 80’s. Good idea about the shoes. I can’t do fun sunnies as I need my prescription. I have my Maui Jim’s with prescription and they are too cool. So I have my limits. Liked the video! As always.

I’m also on the hunt for the perfect camel sweater and camel dress pants (similar issues) and a navy pinstripe button-down. I have an emerald sweater that needs to be retired so a replacement for that. Finally at the bottom of my list is a quilted vest that doesn’t add bulk, in either black or olive.

I really only have two items on my AW 22/23 wishlist- that's a pair of tall, oversized/"loose shaft" riding boots... one in black & one in either cognac or oxblood/burgundy leather. Unfortunately I have struck out twice, trying to order them online- it's difficult to tell how something is going to fit my calf, as my build is essentially the antithesis of the ladies modeling the boots, online. 😕 But trying to buy anything in person at department stores or boutiques has been VERY difficult, in my area... little-to-no stock is being carried on site.

Maybe because I am an older Gen Z, but there will always be trends that make me shudder when I look at them, namely the small oval glasses + leather trench coats (even wearing them separately), and anything resembling the 2000s in shapes and colors. i also had an embarrassing experience where I tried on the oval glasses in a mall, and my sister loudly claiming I looked blind - back then any “functional-only” glasses did not have any interesting or fashionable shapes to them. I always needed glasses even when I was a young kid. So you can imagine how mortified i was as a kid. “Oh no will this be me one day” and “oh no I am mocking actually blind ppl” were all I could think of while I held back tears. Oh, children could be so cruel 😅

It helps if you have more shoes to rotate. Some of my shoes that I wore multiple times per week have worn out in a season or a pair of Sorel boots I loved in 2 years. If you can rotate between more than one pair that helps them last longer. I do think goodyear welt boots are worth it but I definitely understand that's not always an option.
