- Cats have been domesticated for about 4,000 years! Before that, they were one of the greatest hunters feared by numerous species.
- A group of kittens is often called a kindle; a group of adult cats is called a clowder. A female cat is referred to as a queen, and a male cat is known as a tom.
- Cats only meow at humans. With other animals, they hiss, spit, and purr - but never meow. They also tend to greet each other by touching noses.
- The problem of acne is pretty common among cats. They usually end up developing blackheads on their chins, which is widely known as feline acne.
- Most cats tend to spend about two-thirds of their day sleeping. So the average 9-year-old cat has been fully awake for only 3 years of its life! Cats also spend about one-third of their waking hours cleaning themselves up.
- One of the reasons why cats clean themselves so often is to lick your scent off! When your cat rubs against you from nose to tail, it wants to mark you as its own.
- Cats have rather sensitive stomachs, so you should be very careful about your furry friend's menu. Never give your cat onion, garlic, green tomatoes, chocolate, grapes, or raisins.
- Your cat always understands when you say its name…it just chooses to ignore you! Specialists believe this happens because, historically, cats haven't been domesticated to listen to people's orders - unlike dogs.
- A cat's whiskers aren't there to make them extra cute! They’re covered in numerous nerve cells and blood vessels.
- Cats have a special reflective layer in their eyes called the tapetum lucidum. This layer easily magnifies incoming light and allows cats to see around 6 times better than we do in the dark and low light.
- A cat's heart beats way faster than ours with about 110 to 140 beats every single minute.
- A cat's cerebral cortex contains 300 million neurons. Just for comparison, dogs have only around 160 million.
- It's a natural instinct for a kitten to cover its poop. If your cat doesn't do that, this is its way of showing you who's the true head of the house.
- Back in 2007, a calico cat named Tama became a station master and greeted passengers at Kishi Station.
- Cats can easily jump about 6 times their own length! This is all thanks to the powerful muscles in their back legs, which allow them to jump onto any surface they like.
- Biologically, a cat's brain is kinda similar to ours. We have almost identical brain regions that take care of our emotions, so there's a chance that you and your furry friend feel the same way sometimes.
- In the cat world, the concept of left- or right-handedness is a thing too! Most cats are actually left-pawed!

My cat is laying with her paws on my hand. I can move it and risk her biting it or I can stay still and risk her biting it. Fun game.
Will do that with mine ! Leave hand flat and tap her with finger ! Then when she gets annoyed she will bite top of hand! But other times if she kicks me with rear leg I know play time is over ! As for being scratched not once since 2012 ! She has stretched them out on me! The day she did to my ear was almost nervous ! Directly on the kneecap really hurts but has never left a mark !!

i am a converter myself as i didn’t like cats much before too but after i saved two newborn kittens and they died soon after, i couldn’t handle the feeling and adopt a kitten from a foster. she’s sleeping with me now
Thank goodness for a cat's heightened sense of smell. I was 11 years old when a cat saved my life by meowing at me to wake me up because the house was on fire. We all survived... including the cat. Another time my mom was napping in the afternoon because she was feeling sick and her cat wouldn't stop bothering her which wasn't normal behavior for him. My mom's cat continued to meow at her and nudge her face with his face over and over even after my mom repeatedly dismissed him until my mom realized there must be something wrong. She left her apartment and long story short there was a carbon monoxide leak.

Cats can sense when your in a bad mood, as well. When I broke up with my first girlfriend my body was very week at the time and I was very depressed at the time too. Around that time, my cat stayed with me...everywhere I went💯..Like everywhere. I live Cats man, they are truely a blessing from God💯
Trayvon Monden I agree that cats can sense how you feel. There have been times that I would come home from work exhausted or I’m feeling very upset over something going on in my family life, and my precious girl could tell I was in need of some company.

My dad always would tell me when I was younger that cats absorb all your stress and emotions, then lay in the sun for the sun to absorb it.

Cats can kiss to show love. We had a cat named Pong (who had a sister name Ping) who'd come running every morning, get up on mom's chest and kiss her good morning- yes, with his lips.
Fact 2:
Cats call their kittens with a sound which is a mix of purr and meow. And i hav even duplicated this sound and the kittens came running to me and bewildered.

Cats are somehow afraid of other kittens. They run away like being spooked.
Fact 4: mom cat always first feeds her babies just like human mother's. Maybe it's due to the similar-brain thing.
When I get home from work and my cat won't be quiet until I pick her up and kiss her nose. 90% of time when I say give me a kiss I will get a lick on the nose! It goes Meow - be quiet -meow - silence and on it goes until I pick her up. One night she was being louder than normal. So said to her one more peep out of you and I am taking you to the vet! I got a 2 meow response from her!! What are the chances your pet would get your making a joke and make it even funnier?

Never declaw a cat. The operation is actually removing the first knuckle of their fingers and toes, not just the nail. It changes how they walk and causes problems later in life.
It's inhumane and barbaric and it should be outlawed. There are vets who will not perform the procedure because of this. Some states have outlawed the practice and hopefully one day, it will be banned in all the states.
It never changed my cat's walk. In order to afford to keep a cat, people choose to declaw because they can't afford to replace household furniture etc. the rest of the cat's life. And no, scratching posts don't always work. My cat died at 17 years old. I had her 16.5 years. If I had not adopted her, she would have probaby been dead long ago. The declawing was a good idea. My husband was not upset at clawed up furniture and JoJo got to live at our house forever. Cat declawing is fine if you plan to take care of the cat forever.

It’s Ridiculous that you even justify how you think declaw your cat is a right decision. It’s utterly cruel, I have two very naughty ginger toms who love to claw my couch, and climb on me.I just trim their nails instead.
@Deb long Well your not the boss of everybody so mind your own business. All my cats since the late 70's that I owned always indoor only & were front declawed and lived long lives with no problems... My latest one last year @ 6mo stayed over night and when I brought her home, she was running around like nothing happened even. When she feels feisty, I no longer get cat scratch fever

Purring is also used as a medical aid. The purring helps heal them when they r sick or hurt. They can help heal humans by purring as well.
Its the purring that helps relieve stress, anxiety and depression. Its also been known that people in commas have woken up when a cat was sitting on their chest and purring. It also helps to take away pain.
A friends cat got thrown off a balcony 3 floors up and it broke its back legs and hips. It was purring all the time when i went to help it. It was in a lot of pain but carried on purring. Took a few months for it to get better but no matter how much pain it was in it just kept purring all the time to help get rid of the pain.

Makes you wish you could afford a huge piece of property; if you build it they will come. A cat person friend of mine must have a huge cat visible sign over her house because there are always cats in need showing up.
I don't own other species and I have had some unusual family members! Sometimes (not with cats cuz they always show up-they seem to know when you need them) you pay for the privilege of adding them to your family. I really do understand how you feel. If I have to go out for something, my world isn't right until I am back home with him.

When I saw #40, it Immediately made me remember the time we got a cat from an animal shelter. He meowed a lot, so we called him Lionheart. But, sadly he passed away barely a week in our house from something unknown. The next day, I was determined to get another one. So, I went back there and stayed away from the ginger cats( Because Lionheart was ginger ) and saw another litter of kittens. One was particularly cute with her little pink nose, so we got her. She now lives a happy life here shredding up our Couches and wrestling with our dog. I’m so glad I saved a life.

I don't have a cat, but I'm going to get one at the beginning of spring! And the thing that really bothers me is when people say that cats are "selfish" or "jerks", that just really bothers me. Mine showed up as a pregnant stray. That was a surprise a month later! That was summer of 2012. Went with Kimi I would guess you know why? 😀. Have not been scratched once in all that time! She still a fairly small cat with a broken purr switch that is stuck in the on position! It's working as I write this !

My oldest cat in the house is rlly scared/shy and I've been trying to domesticate her for a bit more than a month. I went from her hiding under a bed all day long to her coming out to eat, not getting scared if I go beside her while she is eating and I can pet her on her head only.

We adopted 2 kittens from the shelter, and both of them are Amazing! Penny, our little female, is colored Gorgeously! She’s just a little bit older than the little boy, Hector. I guess we’ve had them about a year, and our dogs love them too! I’ve Never met a cat like Hector! He follows me around like a puppy would. Just a “LoverBoy”!

My cat nearly always purred when I was around him. When he died one of the last things I did was the touching nose thing. I miss him sometimes and sometimes I feel depressed. But I try and hold my head up high because maybe one day I’ll see him again. ❤️💖🧡

I took my cats to the vet not too long ago, and for the first time since I got my second cat, they were in separate carriers. They meowed to each other the whole way to the vet.😭 I used the bigger carrier on the way home so they could be together, and my girl cat smothered my boy cat like the whole way home.😂 My boy cat and I were like, "Ma'am, PLEASE-"😂 They are so ridiculous. Mostly ignore each other at home, but when something "scary" was happening, they needed each other.😭

Birgit Bauhaus So true! I’ve had cats all my life and have rescued many, finding some of them good homes. Some I have kept. One look at their little faces and their paws 🐾 are wrapped around my heart. I currently live with 5 cats, 4 are rescues. They are wonderful roommates! :)
whenever im sad or stressed my cat tobi either head buds me or he puts his paw on my hand while staring at me. then i'd tell him I love him countless of times and he always replies with this cute soft sounding meow

Sometimes I come home from school depressed and done with life, so i curl up on a comfy chair in my pajamas and watch TH-cam feeling empty, numb, sad, and lonely. Then my cat Tika comes over to me, meows, and good onto my lap purring. She always makes me so feel better and be happy no matter how I'm feeling. I'm grateful to have such a good kitty. She is the only one I know for sure loves me. She doesn't care about my grades, what I'm wearing, how i cut my hair, or whether or not I cared enough to shower. She just purrs and nose boops me and makes me feel better, never giving me a reason to doubt if she loves me.
"depressed and done with life" do you know why drug companies don't sell kitties as antidepressants ? because the cats would knock all the bottles of pills off the pharmacy shelves! They tried it in the CVS near my home OH what a mess.

Had Iris for only 9 years and she helped me through a rough time. I'd take a nap on the couch and she would jump up and sleep on my chest. Certainly the best naps.

There are two things that were wrong in this video; 1: Cats don't just purr when they are happy, they also purr when they are frustrated or as a healing factor. CAT FACT: Did you know that cats purr at the same frequency that bones heal? That means they can purr to sort-of heal themselves, or just as a means of comfort. The other thing that was wrong was when you said that cats don't like when you touch the base of their tail. I can tell you with 100% certainty that my cat (Murray) absolutely LOVES it when I scratch him there, and he can never get enough. Now, I don't mean to come across as rude or disrespectful, I just couldn't help but share my obsessive cat knowledge! :D Great video though!

Wear your cat out with play before bed and they'll sleep through the night.
I know when my cat goes to sleep with his paws over his eyes it’s definitely past my bed time. Mine usually only stays up until 2 or so after his nightly burst of energy.

All four of my cats loved being scratched at the base of their tails. They just have to get used to you doing it. The same for belly rubs.
Several of our in heat females DEMAND a scratch there...
The tux in my pic just loves belly rubs. Actually she loves being petted everywhere and she jumps in my arms when she sees me. She's a total sweetheart!
Purring has a frequency associated with healing. Also, the cat's reaction to petting depends on how early and well it was socialized as a kitten.
barbara brooks my persian cat was abused and neglected as a kitty so she acts weirdly to petting, never ever purs and rarely meows but she’s extremely attached to me, refuses to eat unless I’m sticking to her side, and she leads me everywhere she wants to go asking me to tag along, lol she just sits on her hind legs and keeps looking at mr till I get up and follow her, she’s polite and weird and I love her.

Cats are too small to do much damage, lot of dog breeds out there were made to take down bears or to defend their owners against things several times their size so a dog is much more capable of mauling a human than a small cat.
Ive heard about cats suffocating people in their sleep though... and dogs onky attack people of trained to, or were treated badly. While cats do it on accident because they just like how warm it is.

It's crazy how their back legs work. Like they have amazing springs, they can jump, from being at rest, up onto a window sill, a table top etc. It would be like one of us jumping on to the roof of our house with no difficulty!
