    They could've easily just mapped the C buttons to the D-pad. Or just let you remap the damn buttons.

    • @RandomPerson964
      @RandomPerson964 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Or even keep the control scheme they used for the Gamecube controller. Which has fewer buttons than the Switch Pro controller. And use the time they spent remapping the controls on properly mapping analog stick values.

      They didn't seem to want to do game-to-game binding, so that was out of the question. But also, there's a lot of times you want to move and hit c buttons simultaneously, something that would require some truly fantastic piano grips in this situation.
      The layout's main problem is that it's designed to be inflexible. It assumes you can't rebind anything. So it ignores L3 and R3, it makes sure controls are possible for every button prompt, and it sets the shoulders in such a way that Z, L, and R are always accessible. The face c buttons are the ones that were closest to A and B, which are set as they are so that new players don't get confused by prompts, but are also among the most useful (they're all you need for starfox 64, they're two item recalls in ocarina and majora, etc). The ability to use a stick for c buttons, the ability to use a modifier key to turn your face buttons into c buttons, and the layout of the shoulders are all compromises for this. Having the controls change contextually would "make sense", but the goal wasn't to make sense. The goal was to present a product that was functionally plug-and-play, such that controls never needed rebinding. Problem is, people /want/ to rebind, people want to change settings and use things how they want. This is a... passable... default, but not being able to change c buttons or modifiers is the killer. Whoever high up in design insisted that the platform be inflexibly functional should be fired alongside whatever legal executives think taking down scans of a 25 year old book does anything for them but tank their stock.

      I don't know why they didn't just NOT do that (the Switch has more than enough buttons), and let you remap buttons on your own for each game.
      I would have made the defaults be:
      A -> A
      B -> B
      X -> C-Right
      Y -> C-Left
      R -> C-Down
      L -> C-Up
      ZR -> R (Shield)
      ZL -> Z
      D-Pad -> D-Pad (I think this just toggles the minimap? If N64 L is the minimap, put that on D-Pad Up.)
      Plus -> Start/Pause
      Minus -> Save State Menu
      L (or D Pad) going unmapped is fine.

    tbh i think the graininess on the motion blur effect is actually accurate and was just simply unnoticeable for years due to a. the n64's low resolution, and b. prior emulators both by nintendo and by fans failing to emulate it properly. GlideN64 has the effect too.

    NSO has an annoying vibrating glitch with second and third party controllers and the controller just constantly vibrates.

    • @qactustick
      @qactustick 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does he use an unofficial GameCube controller? It'd be funny if it was a Nintendo-made one and it still had that vibrating issue!

    • @paigelove2666
      @paigelove2666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@qactustick The NSO app has that problem even with official gamecube controllers, because those official gamecube controllers still have to go through adapters, and that problem persists even with the first-party adapter, because that adapter and that controller don't have HD Rumble. I think it's a problem with the way that N64 app handles the problem of emulating the rumble pak. What I assume they do is use HD rumble, with the signal that "it exists" being used to confirm to the games that the rumble pak is inserted. However, the app itself just sends an hd rumble signal of "zero rumble" to the controller, so that it can then modulate it into a higher rumble when a signal in game calls for it. Anything without HD rumble, when it gets that "zero rumble" hd rumble signal, just interprets it as a "rumble" signal, and just starts going nuts. And that happens when you connect to the app at all. As such, the only things that work with the app initially were joycons, pro controllers, and the n64 controller which seems to have been specially designed to interpret those signals in a unique way.
      That's my best layman guess for what's happening, and I would assume 3rd party controllers that have managed to fix that issue have managed to create some sort of firmware fix that makes them ignore an HD rumble signal of zero, probably similarly to how the n64 controller itself does it (I wouldn't be surprised if they ripped apart the NSO N64 controller and looked into its firmware just to figure that out).

    • @LilacMonarch
      @LilacMonarch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    "MM on the original NSO release is really bad"? Huh? As the first guy to get MM to boot on NSO... It was quite good. As usual, you are overly critical of switch/NSO.
    To be accurate though, there were stutters. That's probably what you were thinking of as being "really bad", as there is little doubt that when NSO first came out everyone was grasping to find things to dump on and exaggerate. The stutters are fixed in the official release, purely because NERD provided pre-compiled shader cache. The stutters happened when trying to generate the shaders in real time as called. It happens to all custom added games.
    Anyway, as for OoT and if it was specifically worked on or just happens to work from MM's work. No. Evidence is, it was specifically worked on. There were changes to the config file. That water temple texture issue itself was manually fixed. The blue warps would require the same fix, but they just missed it. Your water temple critique was used front and center in all the articles about the app release. So they were well aware of that and had to fix it. The blue warp, not so much.
    And FYI... yes. The control mapping is atrocious! Dump away on that! Even hacking the files, I haven't been able to fix that yet. Addressing the control mapping really should be their #1 issue.

      I can guarantee my knowledge and what I have said. But my purpose isn't to come here throwing my weight or cred around willy-nilly. I'm just casually commenting on a YT video to correct false and exaggerated information. I'm a big ZFG fan, since around 2015. But... he likes to get overly negative with things like this at times, and people see him as an authority of info. So its frustrating when he spreads bad info and baseless negativity. Even when he admits he doesn't know something completely, as he did in this video, people still take his word to the extreme and as gospel simply because of his history and knowledge alone. There has been an incredible amount of negativity for the sake of being negative and seeming superior from others about the emulator, and a lot of it cites ZFG. It has it's issues. Sure. There is plenty to complain about. Just not everything that people do or cite as reasons. In reality, the emu is quite competent with few truly major issues that effect the average user.
      As for you not getting the service? Oh noes! Some random idiot in a YT comment doesn't want to support Nintendo in something I have no stake in! What am I going to do? How am I going to sleep at night!?! But seriously, for how I am effected... its win/win. One less idiot I will have to deal with.

    • @Kj-so7zd
      @Kj-so7zd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My issue is, most people in this comment section and ZFG himself is looking at this version of OOT in comparison to literally the best versions of the game that are the best versions to speedrun, not just a good version to casually play. These fixes only matter to speedrunners, there's only so much you can fix where the casual player will actually notice

    • @DarkAkuma
      @DarkAkuma 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kj-so7zd Exactly. It gets lost that ZFG's major critiques are of it in a speed-running sense. Where as an average casual gamer is completely different. Minor input lag over other versions and a bunch of nit picking texture issues like blue warp and bomb effect... in trade for a high res, easily available version of the game that runs on a portable device?
      Don't think for a second that if the switch version was found to have some sort of significant time save for speedrunning, that ZFG and others would switch in a second, adapt to the control issues and forget about the textures very quickly. And in the case of MM, last I heard... I think thats happening.

People who are playing the game for the first time wouldn't notice how bad it was, but if that's the best thing you can say about your *premium* emulation service then it should not be being sold at all, especially not for a pricetag like NSO. The main issue wasn't that it was 'unplayable', it's that Nintendo goes out of their way to shut down ROM sharing and unofficial emulation and then fails to provide an adequate alternative. The NSO 1.0 state of OOT was absolutely pathetic, it ruined the atmosphere of the game and had *noticable* input lag even to casual players. That is not acceptable.
      Edit: Forgot to mention, *Nintendo can't even compete with their own (decade old!!!) emulation service.* What the fuck is your excuse for their laziness?
