Hi Roz.. My tip for solid butter is to cut sufficient off the block then stand a fork in hot water for a minute and quickly mash the butter with it. the hot fork very quickly makes the butter spreadable. I am 84 and have been camping, youth hosteling and occasionaly caravaning since I was13. Keep up the good work. Walter.

I agree with everything said about butter so far and will add that if you need to soften butter, you can use a microwave on defrost (low power) for ten or twenty seconds. Alternatively, you can set it in a bowl of warm/hot water and cover the bowl, leaving it in a tiny butter steam room. How long to leave it depends on the temperature of the water, the ambient temperature, and the amount of butter.

You display the wonderful surroundings in an engaging way that makes me want to keep watching. I find myself wishing I had done more of this in my life and chosen a better work life balance whilst I was working. I have shared adventures with my soulmate since we met that we will never forget and feel sure that even the most challenging (or not) of times will have great meaning for you, especially enhancing Winston's life and providing such a wonderful habitat for him. 2 ways I would suggest for your butter. 1. peel it off with a potato peeler and spread it that way or 2. I see you have an electric jug (kettle), cut off as much butter as you need and put it in a small plastic container and sit it on top of your jug while you set it to boil. It should soften your butter enough to spread it :)

14:54 You don't have to keep butter in the fridge. It will last longer in the fridge, but at the rate any normal person would use butter, it's not an issue. Salted butter will take several weeks to go sour out of the fridge, just keep it out of direct sunlight, and below about 20C. Also if you heat 2 slices of bread in the microwave for 10s, they come out slightly warm, and then hard butter will soften more as you spread. Putting slightly dry bread in the microwave for 10s also freshens it up, for some reason. But I do remember you saying you didn't have a microwave in the pod. I've nearly finished watching all your videos :(

I was thinking of buying a Go Pod but was put of by the price also at six foot one standing up would be difficult plus with my vehicle it would be like an elephant towing a mouse.
Your comment about aqua planing yes the condition of your tyres is one factor but another is people don't drive for the conditions excessive speed is a major cause keep your speed down, if you do start to slide steer into it keep off the brakes (don't rush anything) and stay calm things I was taught when learning to drive.

Thanks for the tips! Yes, Go-Pods ate not cheap; the carry a premium due to their size, but there are other caravans out there that will give you more for your money. My problem is that my van is only small and has a small towing capacity, so wouldn't be able to tow the bigger caravans. And I love my little van, so not ready to change her yet. Hence, I ended up with a Go Pod.

Yes, at those ambient temperatures, it's ok to leave the butter out of the fridge. Also, if you freeze the bread, it's much easier to spread hard butter without tearing it. At 23° ambient, it will soon thaw. If the butter is too soft, the cold bread will harden it up nicely. Enjoy!

Loved your piece about the mine, interesting since I worked in two mines in the 1980s; one, the "Black Angel Mine" in NW Greenland, was a lead/zinc mine. Most likely, there is more ore in the ground, but with such a small mine, it cannot be economically viable. I guess they had a small tramway, now gone, from the mine, and then the big rusty shute is the crusher, making the ore block smaller. Likely there were some rails from the crusher over the tressels to the treatment plant (a grinder, I guess), making a powder of ore then shipped elsewhere for separation. A really fun "report" of an old mining site, thanks

Great vlog. Regarding butter, all my life we’ve had block butter, doesn’t need to be in fridge, mines kept in the cupboard, in winter months I leave it on worktop as sun gets in and softens it a bit, cooler months it’s a lot firmer, for a bit to use, scrape it up on knife and spread it over the block then scrape it up again and repeat, that then softens that bit, spread it on bread and repeat until covered. Sounds painful but not to bad, better than margarine!

I don't know why, but the site of that butter has made me laugh so much, I choked on my sleepy tea! I have a couple of single burner gas heaters, like two, single bar gas fires. The problem is that you do need a certain amount of air circulation, a window ajar or the door the same. It seems self defeating. But they dry out the air and sometimes the reason we feel colder is beacuse of the moisture in the air. They take a single small can of gas, they're about £1 - £2. each. On a lower setting they last a coupe of hours each. In a pod that size, i'd imagine they would warm it up in no time, if the electricity was ever a problem.

Hi Roseanne. I've just found your channel and subscribed as I'm a fellow Go-Pod owner. My wife and I stayed at that beautiful site last June. I wanted to do Wainwright's route up Skiddaw before I was 70 next year and made it, albeit a struggle. We canoed on Derwentwater, which was great.
Like you, we walked Barrow fell ( I was a lot more out of breath than you! ).
If we are staying more than one night, I always put the air awning up, which gives us lots of extra space, although in the winds that you encountered, that wouldn't have been possible. I've found that a couple of lightweight axle stands under the front of the chassis stops all of the rocking in windy weather.
I look forward to following your vlogs. Stay safe.😊

May I make a suggestion on the caravan and the butter. For the caravan keep the heater on 24 7 even when out, we are going away for Christmas and what we do is just let the heater run. When it comes to butter just do as thin a strip and you can add to the bread and leave do not spread. After a minute or two you should be able spread as normal. We know what you mean about people wanting to look at the caravan we have a German Hymer nova gl590 caravan and it always gets looks being a good looking German caravan as a lot can look very odd on the outside.
