"You won't be alone" is the one on your list which surprised me the most. At first I was annoyed by the obvious Terrence Malick-style voice over, but then I realized it was important for the story because every time she changes body, we can still hear her thoughts. Impressive cinematography, despite the limited budget. Also, the village and the costumes felt very real and lived in.

My number one for 2022 is unequivocally The Black Phone. It brought coming of age horror to a new level and just gave us an amazingly engrossing story. Plus, Madeline McGraw is phenomenal! She stole literally every scene she was in.
X is a close second. I've seen it seven times and can't get enough of it.

What I love about your videos is that you are always open about what you like regardless of what critics or fans love or hate.
I feel like a lot of people’s opinions are based on what is popular to say.
Feeling like you’re genuine and don’t follow the crowd is so fantastic and refreshing, thank you!

"You won't be alone" imo is one of the best films I've seen in a very long time, in so many ways. there was at least one part that had me in tears, its a very special movie, i love it so much!!!! im so glad it made your list (and almost in the top 3 :D ) also "Fresh" was soooo good!!! loved it so much!!

I love hearing you speak with such passion and enthusiasm. It makes me like all of these movies even more!
X, Barbarian, and You Won’t Be Alone are my standouts. And Mad God. Honorable mentions that actually scared me (besides Barbarian) are Incantation and Speak No Evil.
    Thanks for another spooky year!

  • @keep_walking_on_grass

Because of Fresh: Daisy Edgar Jones deserves an oscar for that scene when she is waking up after he drugged her. When his mask falls and she slowly realizes the situation. I could feel her increasing fear, the increasing levels of adrenaline in her blood, and her disappointment in him. With every second she gets closer to hyperventilating during these 3 minutes. Seriously - this is terrific acting.

turned into 20 (horrors and horror-adjacent thrillers):
      1. Nope
      2. You Are Not My Mother
      3. The Batman
      4. Banshees of Inisherin
      5. You Won't Be Alone
      6. The Wonder
      7. Prey
      8. Soft and Quiet
      9. The Apology
      10. Something in the Dirt
      11. Speak No Evil
      12. Resurrection
      13. Blood Relatives
      14. Saloum
      15. We're All Going To The World's Fair

    • @MadailinBurnhope

      honourable mentions (also loved!):
Lamb -- an incredibly poignant Icelandic folktale about a grieving farming couple who give birth to a literal lamb, to me a poignant metaphor about how we throw ourselves into our mundane everyday in order to cope with grief, find meaning in it, and life after it; an appropriate mix of the absurd and the emotional
Incantation -- a Taiwanese found-footage film foregrounding authentic belief around motherhood and generational curses; even as I write this description I'm hearing ghosts asking me why it didn't make the top 20
Hellraiser 22 -- Jamie Clayton, a trans woman, makes the best and most authentic Pinhead here, and the movie is visually dazzling; however (and I hate to be that girl, but) parts of it were little over-long, dull and a bit muddled
The Northman -- sorry Robert, I love you but just... not quite this time bro; Robert Eggers, one of my very favourite film directors, skillfully rights many of the wrongs of previous Viking content, but just doesn't go quite hard enough for me
The Last Thing Mary Saw -- technically a 2021 movie with a wide release this year, folk horror, can't remember much detail but the atmosphere was memorable, and Rory Culkin's in it; can't go wrong, bish bash bosh

When you commented that Gaspar Noe was one of your favourite directors I knew this channel mirrored my cinematic sensibilities. One of the highlights of 2022 was discovering Spooky Astronauts. I went to see Barbarian, Smile, and The Menu solely based on your recs for those movies. Absolutely loved the first two. Still need to catch up with a couple films, but my top 3 would definitely be the same as yours, probably 1) nope 2) Barbarian 3) X. All 3 of those films were so fun and brought something new to the horror genre. Bones & All was absolutely beautiful as well. And yes, please see “Waves”. It is a beautiful, fantastic flick. Cheers. Thank you for shining a light on horror & dark cinema. See you in 2023.

    10 - Smile
    9 - Barbarian
    8 - X
    7 - Nope
    6 - Pearl
5 - The Innocents (kinda toeing the line between being a 2021 or 2022 release, but it was only released in my country this year so I'm counting it)
4 - Hellraiser (absolutely surprised how much I loved this one)
    3 - Watcher
    2 - Speak no evil
1- Bones and All (absolutely blew me away and I haven't stopped thinking about it)

I remember hearing about the production of Barbarian and that it starred Bill Skarsgard and Justin Long, but it wasn't on my radar for the longest time. Then I saw your review before it premiered and immediately prioritized a viewing. Caught it in a Dolby theater on opening night and was blown away. It's rare that a horror film actually scares me and I fondly remember how fun it was to squirm in my seat as Georgina Campbell steps into that dark hallway. Thank you for directing me towards that experience!
And X is the ultimate slasher! I truly can't decide between X and Pearl. They're two sides of the perfect horror coin to me.

    • @fleshtaffy
      @fleshtaffy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

X and Pearl were trash. They haven't even written the ending to the story, clearly a cash grab with a strong female lead. They'll turn the story into whatever is trendy. 2022 things.

    1) Speak No Evil: I thought it was a rest commentary on our world, where acquiescing on increments of personal space/freedom can have disastrous results
    2) X: Brought back the classic slasher, and did it better. Mia Goth is a revelation. Great in Pearl too, but this was a much better movie
    3) Barbarian: Such a great, unexpected thriller. Love how both Justin Long and Bill Skarsgard each played against type.
    4) The Innocents: Kind of in the milieu Lord of the Flies, where children are given power over their environment to some disastrous results
    5) Fresh: Stylish, even sexy horror/dark comedy. Great looking people and settings offset by a very dark underbelly
    6) Those Who Walk Away: The most underrated, under-seen horror/drama done in all one shot style. Starts as a first date/love story, but finishes elsewhere.
    7) The Menu: Dark comedy about pretension and send-up of TV cooking shows. A tour de force for Ralph Fiennes. He should be up for some awards for this role. Taylor-Joy also excellent
    8) Hatching: Heavily metaphorical body horror about a girl caring for a quickly growing out of control baby bird as a stand-in for going through puberty
    9) Nope: For me, I used to have nightmares about large objects in the sky coming down to earth. Not aliens just large objects. It gave me chills.
    10) A Wounded Fawn: Kind of a fun, surreal serial killer revenge movie

First of all, definitely do the non-horror list. Second, a lot of people are in the X vs Pearl camp, and I gotta say...I'm definitely in the Pearl camp. What's hilarious is your feelings on Pearl are exactly how I feel about X. I liked X, but to me, it just felt like a really good slasher. Throughout the film, I just knew where it was going, for the most part, and just enjoyed the ride. Pearl, however, I had absolutely no idea where it was going. It also felt far more original and unique. I don't think I've ever seen another movie like it. Both were great though.
My other favorite horror movies were Smile, Barbarian, and The Black Phone.

To understand what makes Nope and Us so so good is to love finding all of the little details upon rewatch that just show that peele is one of us who appreciates the amazing classics of the past while bringing something fresh to the table. The gorgeous filmmaking. And the fact it comes from peele who I thought was just a big goof ball comedian before he’s mad 3 back to back near masterpieces. Just my opinion.

ohhhh I liked this ranking :) here's mine w/ a little feedback for each movie, sorry if it's long:
    1. Nope… yup, pretty much what Emma said. This movie is a full spectacle, and I can't believe I was worthy of watching it.
    2. Bodies Bodies Bodies. Loved the satire and the characters of this slasher
    3. The House. Didn't like the first story too much, but it has very good horror elements and a beautiful message when wrapped up.
    4. Shut In. Thriller Horror at its peak, over the top, a bit cheesy, and it has a cute message.
    5. X. The deaths are pretty good, I loved the transitions between scenes, and Mia Goth is incredible.
    6. Scream. One of the best theatre experiences in my life… and I screamed.
    7. The Black Phone: I got scared, but it made me laugh a lot for some reason.
    8. Beast. The definition of anxiety.
    9. The Menu. Solid ;)
    10. Fresh. Loved the chaotic Martyrs-esque essence and Daisy-Edgar Jones.

Of the films I've seen on this list, It's crazy how close I would place my numbers to yours. I would swap out FRESH though (and put PEARL in there somewhere). I thought it had a great idea and was into it for a while, but it actually way too middle of the road for me. I was disappointed such a crazy story was done so blandly. I really need to see BONES AND ALL and YOU WON'T BE ALONE - They both look terrific and I've been meaning to watch them for ages. Great list, It's nice to see someone who really digs deeper into horror films, and knows the difference between fun popcorn horror and the hard stuff (and still loves both).

I loved Barbarian and I knew it would be in the top 5 at least. The only problem with the movie I had came later. I´m not American and I searched about that neighborhood where the house is. I can´t understand why any of the two would rent a house in a place like that.

Just wanted to leave a comment to say I was so excited when I saw you posted this video! I agree on many of your opinons in general so it was an amazing video! (and I'd very much like to watch your non horror top 10), I'm relatively new to horror but I think my favorite is Nope, it's SO beautifully made. I only watched it once tho, so I'm curious now hahahah. Anyway, keep doing what you do cause it's so amazing, you always have interesting films to talk about (last film I watched was Soft and Quiet, cause you talked about it, and wow). Happy Holidays!

I forgot why I hated it and rewatched Halloween ends like last week. It's impressive how trash that movie is. At the very least, just commit to the idea that Michael is supernatural or not. And the patty cake love stories and a 20yr old being bullied by band nerds made my head explode 😂 I don't wanna see Danny McBride or any of these directors touch any other IPs I care for ever again. So saddening

No. Terrifier 2 had fun scenes but was bloated and far too long in the tooth. Halloween Ends was clearly not for everyone, but calling it the worst of the year really just says volumes about yourself.

@Hall king74 tbh I actually like Halloween Ends but I do understand why you're not a fan of the movie. But I'm gonna respectfully disagree with you're opinion the worst horror movie of this year easily goes too Jeeper creepers reborn.

Emma is like a National Treasure.
I watch things just because of how she reviews them. I find she takes the edge off the horror and makes it all sound interesting and artistic instead. I also find her so open and relatable. So many reviewers on ytube Just kinda turn you off like ugh, they seem to just speak with their head, Emma is just like “endearing “ lolz. I always find something worthwhile in her videos even if I don’t watch the movies. Thanks for all you share Emma.
