Great video, but one thing. Jacob's Ladder. He was NOT dead the whole time. Jacob was fatally wounded in Vietnam. The movie took place in his mind, it was fighting it, it was his mind trying to live out his life, but when he had the "attacks" he was seeing the doctors and nurses, trying to save his life. Only at the end when his son told him it was time and to come with him, that he finally gave up and accepted that his fate. It was then that his body gave out finally and he died. .
@@spookyastronauts Technical/military term is expectant. That is they are expected to die even with medical intervention but cannot/won't be declared dead until later. People still fighting and can't check on them etc.
You should definitely do the horror list btw… I would absolutely love that. I knew all of the ones on this list except for one, so I’m gonna go and check it out tonight 🤭 As for my little contribution, there’s a Norwegian film from 05 called “Naboer”, and sometimes “Next Door” in English advertising. It’s definitely not for the feigned of heart, but once I understood what was going on my jaw was on the floor !!! It’s criminally underrated…. I even saw that some idiots even gave it some bad reviews but believe me… As a long time fan of horror and a psychological thriller fanatic, this film was spectacular and you won’t forget it…
_Jacob's Ladder_ holds a special place for me. I saw it with someone who had been diagnosed with a fatal disease and was only weeks away from entering the hospital for the last time. We went to see a horror movie because we both liked them and saw them as a means of escape. But this film had the opposite effect. Usually we'd spend half the night talking about whatever we saw, picking it apart, teasing out the subtext. But after _Jacob's Ladder,_ we both sat in the car, in complete silence for a long time, before I finally started it up and drove her home. I think it was late the next day before we spoke to each other again. Yeah, its twist is an old trope, and I did suspect what it ended up being, but the emotional toll the film took put it on another level. I can't say how much of the effect on me personally was due to the personal circumstances, but I've never forgotten it.
If there's one horror film i'd recommend to any horror film it would always be Jacobs Ladder, if not for it we wouldnt have gotten Silent Hill. Such a sad and haunting movie.
4:40 I love how the screenwriter for one of Denis Villeneuve's best films is also the creator of the mind-bending genre-bending SF show Raised by Wolves!!! #RenewRaisedbyWolves

Great video, Emma! I just realized that a lot of my favorite movies does have disturbing twists. The orphanage, The skin I live in and Oldboy, for example. Also, thanks for the tip about Frailty. I had no idea Bill Paxton directed it and I love Bill Paxton!
This is very possibly my favourite spookyastronauts video to date! I LOVE that it's about how disturbing the twist is and that you used a more engaging structure to spare spoilering. I can tell a lot of thought and consideration went into this one. Masterful.
Orphanage is soooooo good! It’s one of the few horror movies that have ever made me cry, and possibly the only one of that small number that I rewatch ❤
On the Mist, I always thought the "crazy" religious lady ended up being right. Especially since the help arrived after he killed his son. Also, The Orphanage is the movie that got me into watching non American or non English language horror movies. I highly recommend people to watch it if they haven't. It's not really a horror movie but more of an underrated thriller, I always thought the movie The Skeleton Key had a great twist at the end.
Sleepaway Camp had a great twist, too, though it obviously wouldn't translate as well today. I think what was meant to shock people most was SPOILER ALERT! the aunt raising Angela as a girl against his/her/their will essentially.
Wow Emma! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this list!!! I have seen most of these, except for The Skin I Live In and Frailty. And being a weirdo and not worried about spoilers, I watched right til the end and it has made me want to see them EVEN MORE!!!! Fior me, that end twist in A Serbian Film was absolutely GUT-WRENCHING! I'm in the minority but it's such a well made film! You should deffo do a horror-twist video...there are so many! I love this video -- I've seen most of them and these twists are truly chilling. Thank you for reminding me why these films are all incredibly twisted and terrifying journeys!
The plot twist in The Mist profoundly impacted me. It’s something that has stayed with me ever since I first watched it. Every time the movie is mentioned, that twist is all I can think about. It truly changed something in me.
Thanks very much for this video, Emma. It was a great format and gave me the chance to select which explanations I wanted to hear. Most of the films I had seen, so it was fun to relive most of the twists. I chose to listen to one explanation to a film I know I probably can't sit through, and it was worth finding out, just to put it to rest. I've got a funny story to go with one of these films. Back in 2007, I went with a friend to see "The Mist". Now, I had read the Stephen King story, but my friend had not. I thought the film would be a good watch based on what I read. Well, the "twist ending" shocked us both and my friend really got upset with me. He wondered how I could have recommended a film with such a depressing ending. Well, I didn't know, and I had to explain that. He was upset with me for a short while, but it blew over.
Thank you for formatting the video in this way! I can skip the spoilers for movies I may want to watch unspoiled one day. Also yes please to the best horror twists video! In the same format that would be fabulous 😁
You should do more videos like this. I actually just saw the orphanage for the first time thanks your video and it was amazing. It broke me but I loved it. I'd heard of it many times but didn't check it out because it seemed light on the horror. But boy am I glad I took your recommendation. ❤ Thanks Emma!
Awesome video!!! I had watched most movies on the list, but I really wanted to know the twist for A Serbian Film without having to watch it. I hate spoilers for the most part, but I also hate wasting my time with barely good enough or mediocre movies, or good but too disturbing movies, so, I do enjoy getting them spoiled since I'm not going to watch them... Thanx, Emma!!!
Are movies like these even made anymore!? If so, please recommend! Also, I totally forgot about Frailty and now need to rewatch! Thanks for the Serbian film spoiler as I was never gonna watch it,because of its reputation, but was curious what it was about.
I haven't seen The Orphanage since it came out in the theatres. It was so awesome to see again! And such a great cast!! Love that most of these are early 2000 flicks!
The ending for The Mist is simply wonderful. I saw an interview with Stephen King and he said he liked it as well. In fact, he went so far to say he wished he had thought of ending it that way. It's just brilliant!
OK I'm finally watching Oldboy tonight as it's the only one I have yet to see! And I'm sure it's because of your recommendations. Great list. More lists with twists!! Thank you for your time in putting this together. Hoping you're doing ok.
great video and I like the list for the titles I know and even more for those I haven't watched yet. But Incendies (Villeneuve) had to be on this list 100%. Much more than Prisoner (which is a good movie in any case) and many other titles. Scarier and more disturbing twist than most horror movies. The sum scene. Those who know, know. Sleepaway camp is another one. Definitely not a masterpiece by any mean of the imagination, but the ending is unforgettable.
Hello Emma. I’m a longtime viewer and avid fan of your movie lists. A warm winter to you there in Oz. Sorry for your hacked IG account. Also condolence for your belated pooch. Went through the same thing last year. Keep up with the great work; you’re much appreciated here in the US (at least from my neck of California).🎥🎬🍿🎞️📽️
I just watched the Orphanage a few weeks back and loved it. I'm glad I bought it because it is one I'll definitely rewatch. That quick shot with the schoolmaster's broken jaw was pretty disturbing. I guess that's the only reasons for the R-rating? Not the scariest film or the most original, but definitely it has its moments of tension and I thought it was very well done. Beautiful atmosphere and quite haunting. Jacob's Ladder is one I need to see again. I found it really interesting. The scene where he is being moved through the hospital on stretcher and all that gore is all on floor, and just the insane, inhuman movements of the people inside and bizarre imagery really stuck with me. It probably does the best job of conveying what being a paranoid psychotic might be like of any film I have seen, and I can see how the visual imagery inspired video games like Silent Hill.
I love it when you explain the movies. I have seen every movie on this list, except or “A Serbian Film“. I love most of them as well. Three are in my top five favourite films of all time. But I think I’m going to give Serbian a miss. Forever.
How can you make a disturbung plot twists list without even mentioning Irreversible?! Its absolutely impossible to see coming and the point it makes makes the whole movie a masterpiece (aside from the insane artistic style itself). Also the plot twist in "Incendies" - Villeneuves best movie imho - is absolutely disturbing and the last scene is so beautifully written! The main character nit talking anymore yet finding the best words to describe why she does not talk anymore... Crazy.

I was a teen when I first saw Jacob's Ladder which was in the mid 90's. To me, it was like the saying: "your entire life flashes before your eyes at the moment you die" hence that's how I interpreted it was all about
I've seen Oldboy and two/thirds of the Vengeance Trilogy. Lady Vengeance is my favorite out of the three. I thought I knew the twist of Momento but I guess I only knew half of the twist. I still need to watch Jacob's ladder.
Those are a lot of great films, but I had to skip a few in the video that I still hadn't see. Prisoners is probably in my Top 10 favorites of all time as I had no idea what I was getting into when I saw it.
To me, one of the most disturbing - and heartbreaking - plot twists ever is in another Villeneuve film, Incendies. Oh Lord... whyyy (masterpiece alert)
Serbian Film is definitely the most disturbing movie with the most diaturbing ending of all time. The twist in Oldboy is probably the best disturbing twist ever made, the impact is next level. Another disturbing twist is in Chinatown when it is revealed the woman was SA'd by her own biological father, gave birth to her own sister, and, at the end of the movie, she is killed and her daughter sister is taken from her by her father to underage SA her and make her give birth to another daughter to SA from birth, who will be his own daughter, granddaughter, and great granddaughter all at the exact same time, whilst Jake can only watch on helplessly as his view of humanity is shattered before his very eyes as he bears witness to the sheer depths of depravity man is capable of and gives a haunting broken look of despair as the film fades to black and the credits roll. Brr, gives me a chill down my spine thinking about it, truly nasty plot twist.
I have been refusing to watch "A Serbian film" because of "that scene". The first time I tried I got to that part and I was so disgusted I stop right there. But now you told about a twist in the ending and I am totally eager to know what that is. I think I will rewatch and just skip "that scene".
I did a video on it, and its my most ever converted sub video, meaning it brought more people to my channel than any other video as subscribers. I think thats so interesting, shows people here want to discuss things they feel like they cant, i mean we can all condemn it but still have the conversation.
I saw The Skin i Live in in school. My spanish teacher figured it was a good movie to show her class. Let's sat it was a controversial choice among both students and parents. But then again my english teacher (i'm from Brasil) showed us the ring when i was in middle school, so i don't really know wtf my school was thinking...
Old boy is a fascinating film, because technically the antagonist is the main character, so you’re looking through the eyes of the protagonist, but actually it should be the other way round for the film to make more sense.
A big plot point you didn’t mention in regards to A Serbian Film, is that when filming the scenes in the snuff film he takes drugs of some kind that makes him loose all inhibitions and makes him a sexual berserker. Which is how he is able to do all the things.
I mean I didn’t mention a lot about the film! I didn’t even talk about his brother. There’s so many details of all of them I’d end up explaining the whole film so I had to just keep it moving
@@_SunscreenQueen_ all I remember is that he's on drugs. Not necessarily how he takes them. Wasn't it a requirement from the director? It was a long time ago that I watched it so...
100% going to check out every one but a Serbian film. I just can’t even support it by watching it. I love some of the most disturbing films but that’s just too exploitative for me. But that’s the great things about horror. We all have our own boundaries based on personal experiences/morals so no judgement to anyone who has different boundaries than me
@@undetected2088 yup...the metal grids, frame-skip monster movements, dirty hospitals, disfigured nurses/doctors, weird shapes...the movie is a bloody masterpiece. Same as some of the SH games

I appreciate someone talking about a Serbian film as a real film and not just trashing it and dismissing the whole story because of one scene
I did a video on it, and its my most ever converted sub video, meaning it brought more people to my channel than any other video as subscribers. I think thats so interesting, shows people here want to discuss things they feel like they cant, i mean we can all condemn it but still have the conversation.
Totally agree....the "scene" wasn't necessary....but, brilliant film.
Have you seen “Daddy’s little girl”? It’s not what you think (he actually loves his daughter in a good way) but it is so sad and really brutal.
You've got great taste
Bloody Reunion is one of my favorites
what about martyrs have you seen this film, if you have, opinions, what does the ending mean?
I’ve done a whole stream on this! It’s hard to say it’s a twist more of a shocking ending
I would recommend "The Treatment" (2014 ) as a candidate for a future list. The novel it is based on is equally disturbing, upsetting and well done.
ooo thank you!
Ending of Devil was good. That elevator scene!
Prisoners, The Orphanage are my some of my favorites of all time
I saw The Skin i Live in in school.
I totally get what you mean but with his sisterrr I don’t think I like that haha
@@spookyastronauts it’s something that makes it even more twisted the fact that he’s having an intimate relationship with his sister
A big plot point you didn’t mention in regards to A Serbian Film, is that when filming the scenes in the snuff film he takes drugs of some kind that makes him loose all inhibitions and makes him a sexual berserker. Which is how he is able to do all the things.
Isn’t he drugged? So he didn’t actively choose to take them
I mean I didn’t mention a lot about the film!
We all have our own boundaries based on personal experiences/morals so no judgement to anyone who has different boundaries than me
You KNOW the movie is great when it inspired a lot of Silent Hill monsters and aesthetics in general
Jacob’s Ladder ?
Hell yeah 🤛
@@undetected2088 yup...the metal grids, frame-skip monster movements, dirty hospitals, disfigured nurses/doctors, weird shapes...the movie is a bloody masterpiece. Same as some of the SH games
The Skin I Live In was soooooo good.
Its more of a doc but the twist in Dear Zachary is one of the most gut wrenching ever. You think it cant get worse...but it does.
That was heart wrenching and the fact it’s a documentary makes it more horrific :(
More please!!! 😁💙
