- ▼ LOTS OF INFO ▼ Two of my three cats need a prescription diet to keep them healthy, which means all three of my cats eat a different diet and need to be fed separately. How do I manage? Up until now, I've been playing "musical food bowls" with my cats trying to get each cat to only eat out of his own bowl before I put it back in the closet for next time. But that system was definitely not working, so I finally decided to splurge on these microchip activated SureFeed cat feeders. Have they made my life easier or do my cats hate the scary food robots? Though I'm a dog person, I love all pets really. I don't have any cats, but I really enjoyed your video and would love to see more on your cute kitties. It's just really interesting to see all of the technology they have these days for our animals. I love your fish videos for sure, but I also love it when you do other types of videos like this one, your art, your reptiles, etc. it just gives your channel variety. :)

this may solve our problem of the dog eating our cats food while at work
The second the dog hears the bowl open he'll run for it and probably break the mechanism haha. Why not just put the bowl high up on a cat tree or shelf.
I think this was originally invented to keep a dog out of the cat's food bowl.
Although the price is quite high, I wonder if this would’ve worked years ago when I had an 85lb dog and a 12lb cat.
At that time, I installed a pet flap door in my bathroom door and fed my cat in the bathroom but, I had to also put the cat’s litter box in there, sadly, because my dog also enjoyed used cat litter!🤢
Loved this! As someone with multiple cats as well, this is huge! Thank you for sharing. One of our cats badly needs to go on a diet, but as you know it's nearly impossible to do with multiple cats, so I'm going to look into these. Also, I'd love to see more cat videos! Your's are absolutely adorable. We're actually about to work on building a new stand for a bigger fish tank too, which I hope our cats will enjoy.

Ingenious device but I can see a cat sitting there making it open and close until the batteries run out just to watch it.
After seeing so many videos online of cats flushing toilets over and over just for the fun of it... yes I can definitely see that happening!

This is the first time I have watched you. You stated this was your first time portraying your cats. Well, I loved it. As a cat lover it's always nice to see someone give great tips and helpful hints about their cats and you did it in such a lovely manner.

I feel the same about plastic feeders, I 100% prefer stainless steel or ceramic, but I'm sure buying these feeders since I also have 3 cats with different diets. Tks for this video. It was the best review of this product I've seen so far.

This looks great! Both my cats have the same dietary needs right now so I'm lucky, but I've often wondered how I would manage if I needed to feed different foods. They both want what the other is having!
They’re brilliant. I have a domestic shorthair senior and a Maine Coon kitten so obviously they have very different dietary requirements. These pet feeders have solved the problem of them eating each other’s food straight away.

Great video Jennifer, I just got a Sure Feed for one of my two cats who has different dietary needs. I still have a few things to figure out in regards to the "training function" and I also found a Sure Feed instructional video on an additional function NOT listed on their manual, i.e.: the "intruder cat" function. This basically will override the open position WHILE an approved cat might be eating, if a "non-approved" microchip is sensed. I will have to see if I am going to need this, because Nina (the non-approved), is far more "food motivated" (as you call it) than her sister Pixie, and quite aggressive too. The only thing about this that could be a problem is it could potentially put off the approved cat when the lid would close on them while they eat, until "intruder" has moved away... Some videos show "sneaky" cats, accessing food from the back or the side WHILE another cat is eating, and presumably the "intruder function" would solve this problem. Have you looked into this function yet? I will check back to report additional info and see how you are doing with it, if you post more videos, etc. I love you fish, but I mostly subscribed because of the cats. =^^=

this is so cool, I've got two cats and possibly getting a third. two eat the same food but one eats different food, and my dog is notorious for eating the cat food. gonna have to look into getting these or something like it and the microchip cat door is great my guys need this so I don't have random animals in my house lol
Haha, Roger is great! He may be food motivated, but he is intelligent and determined ( nonetheless :-/ ). Seems like these microchip readers have great potential; much like the microchip doors for cats/dogs. I would say they need a tolerance setting for once the chip is detected that it will stay open if undetected. It seems like once your cat moved its head away then the door closed. I feel it could be adjusted for a few seconds+!

I’ve just bought these and found,like you mentioned, the sensor sensitivity is not great at finding microchip, I’d recommend, as I have, to put the microchip tag for each feeder on each cats collar as it does pick that up much faster to open food, whether because it’s not under their skin to scan. I’m on Day 2 getting my car used to it. It’s fab tho, such a relief not to guard cat food all the time! Lol

thank you for this. i'm looking for this type of set up for my three cats. expensive, indeed, but two years now and i am very tired of hiding bowls, separating cats, feeding at different times. the three-year warranty is fantastic...for this price it should be. this will also help with the messiness. thanks again.

Oh my god this is amazing! I need this for my dogs so bad. My 12 year old chihuahua has to stay on puppy food but all my others dogs eat regular food and it's frustrating. I wish they weren't so expensive:/
This was helpful to me! Thanks. Have you tried a metal bowl in the bowl? I was thinking thought that there might be some interference with the chip reader and maybe that's why they went with plastic. I expect if you could heat the bowl up for cleaning maybe that would eliminate the bacteria? Could you put a metal bowl in there and try that?
I've thought about this for my 2 cats who can't have each other's food, either. But my cat is susceptible to acne so I'll have to wait until they offer ceramic or metal bowls. 🐱 This was cute!

that's a really good way to handle the situation! are there more than one bowl per package? in case you would want to change for wet food for certain times of the day. also too bad that they are made out of plastic... well can't have everything, but maybe they will do that sometime later. also your cat trying to get into the other foodbowl that's hilarious 😂

On your problems with the feeders:
given the way the sensor works you can't get a sensitivity adjustment. One may consider adding a joint on the base to pivot the white band where the chip reader, but this will make it awkward for the cat since they will consider it intrusive. I suspect that the bowls are plastic to avoid interference with the reader. I would suggest to put some aluminum foil in the bowl and put the food in it as a work-around.
This is so cool! I probably will be buying one when I adopt a cat in the Fall so my dog can't get his or her food.

I have the same thing my cat loves it! We have 2 other cats and the kept on eating her food and she wasn’t getting enough so we got her this and it solved all the problems for us she didn’t have any problems with the door since we have a microchip litter box as my other 2 cats were using it and she was scared and pooping on the floor. In general I highly recommend any microchip cat products they work perfectly for a ton of uses though they are more expensive it’s worth it.

It’s a good idea to wash the bowls first to lessen the smell of the plastic.
I think this is awesome! It would be really great for people who had a cat and a dog. It makes me want to try them but that would be pretty pointless since both of my dogs eat their food in about 15 seconds (maybe up to a minute with their slow feeder bowls).
We just ordered one of these and our cat does get acne with plastic bowls so we were a little worried but it seems they have come out with a stainless steel bowl option that they sell on the sureflap website. So we were pretty happy about that!

Thanks for sharing!!..wish i had seen this prior to buying the collar activated one we bought for our bengal. Mostly bought it because he eats very little at a time and our other 2 cats will eat all his food as well as theirs....Sad to say, it didn't work. He just got freaked out by the noise it made with the lid went up or down, plus he hates collars.
I have Minnie on a food bin feeder.. She never ate as a kitten. I mean like bites at a time so I totally get the cat food war thing. This was fun.

Actually, my cat's microchip also quit working so she had to be reshipped. We also have these Sure Flap feeders and they were an amazing help when the cats got old and had to be on separate meds. Also let us verify how much each was eating.
Just watched a review of the Wonder Bowl, and compared to that, this SureFeed feeder seems WAY better, and worth the price! Apparently the Wonder Bowl has problems with closing on pets' heads, because of the pet moving or the tag turning.
A few questions for you, since this was posted in 2017:
1. How are the feeders working now? Do they still hold up to scrutiny 2 years later?
2. How long do the batteries last? Is there a way to plug them in?
3. Did you ever find metal bowls that would fit?
What a great idea. By the way, you are gorgeous! I love your hair. Fear not, just an old lady making an observation. I had cars that needed separate diets at one time. Only I had 9 at one time. It was insane. But this would be good to have so my dog would leave the food alone. I only have one kitty now.

ugh, prescription food is such a pain. literally the bane of my existence as a pet nutritionist who believes in holistic/natural foods as being the best for animals. that's a cool feeder though! definitely something i'll tell my clients about

Love the idea of cat videos :) Any reason why they are being fed dry food as opposed to wet/raw? From what I know, dry food isn't super great since cats have a low thirst drive. Looking forward to more videos!
If you feed a dry food, cats will increase their water consumption. If you feed a wet food, they will drink less water. They flex their water intake depending upon what they're getting from their diet. It's true that cats naturally have a low thirst drive and thus it can be good for them to have a high moisture content food. I choose to feed dry food for convenience and because it costs less. I also found that my cats wasted SO much wet food (even when I bought the small cans) because once its been opened and refrigerated, they're not interested anymore. Picky cats!
