If you liked that, you can check out a video essay I did about how the Madden football video games completely disrespect the position: th-cam.com/video/NJvy525yp4I/w-d-xo.html
When you ask a genuine, intelligent question pertaining to the game of football, Bill is always more than happy to pull up a chair, slide the podium closer, and give you a good learnin'.
I still remembered that long hour TV interview he gave a few years ago while walking the Gigants Stadium before its convertion; he pulled out a few tears remembering his 12 years in that "Finest Organization" as he put it. He was telling all these stories about LT, Peppers, Parcells, etc, his life during those wonderful years as a defensive coordinator for the Gigants. I think for him those were his best years in football. Lots of memories, victories and championships working under Parcells, his mentor. Think he is trully a Gigants at heart.
Thanks Jim! Will keep that in mind as I take your advice to heart on all the rest of my commenting endeavors that are 11 months plus old. ❤️ have a good one bud!

@David Cop_a_feel So? They did something other teams were doing at the time. Bill Cowher among others openly say this and still defends Bill. It was wrong. If you think that’s solely why they won for two decades you’re mistaken. But your child-like naivety shows beyond the silly name calling. There’s lists of every team cheating and in that area the Pats were in the middle of the pack. Sorry your team probably got dominated for the best 20 years of your life.
Listen to the level of depth he has . He gave a history lesson spanning 50 years on one position. He mentioned rule changes, playing surfaces and in door stadiums. WTF great mind and memory.
Bill will always be a great coach on the defensive side of the football. In terms of a head coach he will always be overrated without the GOAT, which was proven last year, and will be proven again this year when Tampa repeats.
@@speakingtruths4215 you realize this has nothing to do with defensive football and that Belichick has coached much more than just defense, right? he has helped players at every position improve greatly, and there are countless examples of offensive and defensive players talking about it. Stop buying into the bullshit that entertainment hosts talk about on espn and fox sports.
@@speakingtruths4215 I would disagree. I can count on both hands how many quarterbacks were considered better than Brady skill wise and those players still exist. It’s coaching that puts you over the top. Patriots are completely rebuilding with a rookie quarterback. I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss Bill barely 2 years post Brady.
I love how he just knows this history of how a relatively minor part of football evolved over the past decades, down to which few teams did it first, off the top of his head.
As a Bengals fan who watched his team literally lose to the Steelers because the long-snapper was injured and our usually automatic kicker missed three field-goals due to snap, hold, kick exchanges, I can attest that this man speaks the truth.
Long snapping is so hard. People don’t realize that they have to have the ball have the same exact rotations over that distance every time give or take a quarter rotation one way or the other. Any time it’s not, you’re increasing the odds of the laces being in the wrong spot because the holder can only adjust the ball so much before the kicker is there to hit it. It’s amazing that guys can be so consistent with their snap
That missed extra point in week 1 turned the AFC Championship Game into an away game... I blame Zack going for it on 4th on previous drives instead of taking the points with a fg but still. ug.
@cocopuffgames You wrote, "...watched his team literally lose..." should be, "...watched his team lose..." Stop using the word, "literally". You are misusing it.
Bill seems stale when he’s asked stupidly redundant questions by moron reporters, but it’s very enjoyable to listen to this man speak when the man wants to speak
He said "that was a good question" about 3 times. Hint to reporters: he's saying stop asking me about bad blood and the way players "feel" and ask me about the mechanics football.
@davidstevenson9728 he would captivate his students so while they’d probably have to do a little more work for the grade, they’d be more motivated. Would his class be easier? I’d say yes and no
Amazing how eloquent and talkative he can be when you ask a pertinent and good question. They should give Bill his own TV show about the history about the NFL and how positions has changed and how the game has evolved or devolved.
To be honest, it was a good question only if we admit it was coming from someone covering football but knows nothing about football and has probably never played outside of maybe High School. Here’s the easy, basic answer to this question No, not consistently. Here’s one of the main issues. Even if a snapper could play both ways, if he’s practicing with let’s say the offense, he can’t be practicing with the kicker and punter all practice like they usually do and then your kicking and punting suffers. Also, if he gets hurt while practicing or playing in the line, you have to put someone else with less experience and your games could come down to a bad snap
@ SharkAcademy It was a Devils advocate type question. You are one of those people that when someone asks a question, you assume their opinion on the matter, simply because they asked a question. A horribly un-intellectual position to take. It’s called a discussion. Furthering knowledge is not a bad thing. Asking for someone else’s opinion, (In this case one of the premier experts in the topic) opinion does not reveal someone’s ignorance. The fact that you think it does reveals yours. The reporter knows why the position is specialized. He also no doubt knows that things have not always been that way. He was simply thinking about the topic and wanted a great football minds opinion on the topic. Obviously you know everything in the world there is to know but other people seem to expand their knowledge by asking experts. We can’t all be as smart and perfect as you. And by the way, as obvious as this all is to you now, things have not always been this way. Some of the greatest minds in football history, Lombardi, Landry, etc would consider dedicating a whole roster spot to long snapper stupid. This is not gospel. Such thinking had evolved over time. For most people at least. I’m sure if you were alive in the 50s and 60s you’d show those dummies Lombardi and Landry what’s what...
As someone who reported on sports events...I can tell you that he will get flack from his boss for not asking questions that would be controversial. People dont click on videos or sites to read a long story about the history of long snappers...they want the why did Kraft call you the biggest ahole of his life 😂
@@JP-wm1cc True, but I think most of the journalism companies who talk to BB know that he won't give you anything if you don't ask questions the right way. there was this time he was asked why the slot position as a corner is so hard, man his answer showed why hes the GOAT, whenever bill gets a smart question, he absolutely answers it
I have lost interest in football for the most part, but I wanted to say Mr. Belichick is a good man. He bought apples from my grandfather in Strongsville Oh when he was coaching the Browns and was unlike a lot of customers, very polite and treated a very old man on his last year of selling apples with respect!
@Daniel Selby My great-great-grand uncle told a different story. Belichick came to his farm after a loss to the Chiefs and when told they ran out of apple cider donuts he chopped down a bunch of trees in the orchard with his bare hands.
I only made it to 4.5 minutes in and realize this guy just simply knows everything about football. He's run all these situations over and over in his head and discussed with staff and owners and can maximize chances to win with whatever personnel he has at his disposal. Thinking about that, you can imagine how upset he must get when someone just doesn't get their job done after he has already done all this due diligence for decades.
Thats why the pats motto has been "do your job" for so long ... the pieces have been put together in such a way that if everyone does their job they will succeed
Think about how bad the talent on the Patriots is right now for them to not be doing good right now. Mac Jones must be really not good at all I think the Pat's will make a big move at QB soon
Dude can win games only running and barely running at all even when the other teams knows that’s exactly what they’re gonna do. That’s how you know you’re good
Yes, a conversation between Napoleon and Ney about the right wood for cart wheels, and the difference with the wood that was used for gun carriage wheels was legendary - and proved that Ney wasn't quite as dumb as he seemed ........
This is what a son's love and appreciation of their father can do. Bill is still, at almost 70yo, his father's son first and foremost. His passion for the sport is a direct extension of the love he has for his father.
I like that he still has his monotone media voice, but goes into real football-intellectual savant mode. I hope he does a podcast, NFL Films or broadcast after his coaching because he’s a treasure to the NFL no matter how things go rest of his time.
i second that! great fresh question, love when journalists ask thought provoking questions like this instead of the monotonous “what have you done to prepare for this weeks game?” or “how do you think you’re team will play this weekend?” those kinds of questions are boring for fans and especially for players and staff. keep up the good work mate! cheers
Haha i agree, he knows his stuff. He was interviewed in the NFL Films video Bill Belichick Unusual Press Conferences and explained how to get answers like this out of him: th-cam.com/video/veQQ95kbvUU/w-d-xo.html He comes on about halfway through.
Well. That's because readers have shown time and time again that they want the drama. They interact with controversy way more than anything else. So while you and I may hate the division all media has focused on, it's mainly the fault of the audience for having so many who only read, react or comment on stuff that 1) makes them mad 2) they Disagree with or 3)a good *controversy* story. Blah. It sucks..
“After seeing how the Chiefs coach got physical with a Browns player last week it really got me thinking, why waste salary on a coach, couldn’t we cross-train players to coach as well?” “Well you see back in 1942 when John ‘Quick Feet’ MacIntyre…”
Sorry but I love him. He just gave the entire, DETAILED history of long snapping. Knows the game of football from the history to the moment he is in. Genius
He loves special teams - there is what 15 to 20 special teams plays a game, he sees opportunities in those plays for an advantage, remember that Chargers team with No 1 Offense and No 1 Defense for the entire year that absolutely nothing because their special teams was trash....Pepperidge Farms Remembers
lets not forget...this entire answer was made on the fly and all the information was off the top of his head.... rumor has it, Google asks Bill Belichick when somebody types in a football question
akshually it's his life-long friend that's the real football encyclopedia. The "football operation expert" or whatever they call him in NE. That guy is a real actual savant (bill is just really, really smart). How cool is that, that you get to live your dream and have your best friend from highschool at your side ?
Impressive because there was no preparation ahead of time for this question. In general it’s hard to piece together any dialogue about any subject without forethought. I mean people could ramble on for six or seven minutes without content. He communicated his response in a very easy to understand manner.
I played 4 years of d2 football, mostly as an OT. Junior year I was asked to take over long snapping after our regular RG/snapper tore his Achilles. It was easily the most difficult single skill I was ever tasked with learning, in athletics at least. I compare it to tossing horseshoes while standing on your head.
His effortless expression of this seemingly obscure information shows he really has football flowing through him. Like Kraft called him an idiot savant. Well he got the savant part right.
I could see him messing up some pretty basic things that are not football related, or he probably gets through his offseason by framing his day-to-day through the lens of football. Some people's brains only work like that.
In the Belichick documentary from a decade ago or so, there was a clip of Bill struggling to reset the time in his Toyota Highlander when daylight savings time changed over
It's fluent, but not effortless. Belichick's dad Steve literally wrote the book on football scouting, and as a young boy Bill spent every free moment alongside his dad while he watched game film and compiled scouting reports. This is what he was born to do, and putting in the work is literally a labor of love.
I played football through high school and have watched it since I could remember. For a couple years I was an assistant defensive coach for a small high school team that won a championship in our second year. My focus was on the linebackers, of which we generally only ran 2. I consider my knowledge of football well above the average fan but compared to Bill I'm basically a graduate from a trade school compared to a guy with multiple doctorates.
Everyone talking about Bill in this clip but can we give some props to the man with the question? This is the first interesting question i have heard from a reporter. Very refreshing
This is the most I've ever heard Bill answer a question LOL. He usually gives one word answers and tries to end the conference LOL. You can see he really loves the fundamentals of the game. I actually hadn't thought about some of the points he brought up, like the amount of time specialists can spend practicing together vs 2 way position player.
Just incredible to listen to. I would love him to have a purely analytical and/or historical football show when he's done with coaching. It would be incredible to watch up until network heads and marketing people behind the scenes started making superficial changes to "spice things up"
If he had his own podcast whenever he's done being a head coach where he just talked about footballl, or invited other knowledgeable guests and they just chatted about strategy - that would be magnificent.
@David Cop_a_feel that doesn’t negate his ability as a coach, which is considerable. It just means that he may not have enough integrity to discern between legitimate competition and illegitimate measures used to compete. It is possible to be an asshole and still be brilliant in ones chosen field.
@David Cop_a_feel no, “common sense” doesn’t tell you that at all. His colleagues and others much closer to football than I agree that he’s a great coach. But being super-competitive means you are always looking for an edge, and he may have crossed a line or two looking for an edge. That doesn’t mean that most of his success is illegitimate. It most certainly is not. And if you think he’s the only coach who crossed lines to compete, that’s a very naive assumption.
Dude is a bank of historic knowledge. I haven’t heard Tom Tupa’s name since he played…and to break down the history of special teams and how it’s evolved, especially from other teams he didn’t coach is impressive
Two things: 1. You will not get anything about the game they just played, the game they are playing next, or any injured players. 2. He LOVES to talk football. Take those two things into account and he is a great interview.
Honestly this is probably one of the best questions I’ve heard from a reporter. Reporters ask so many basic questions and you often get “canned” responses. We need more questions like that and you will by default get more answers like this.
I have never seen him speak for so long. That was awesome. His knowledge of the History of the game is very detailed and thorough. I'm sure that it is why he was part of the 100 Greatest players in NFL history show on NFL Network.
It almost brings a tear to my eye when Bill gets a question he likes. Those are special moments. Plus the fact that they happen as often as say Christmas.
As I’ve grown older I’ve started to care less about MY specific team that I root for (GB Packers) and more about the strategy, mindset and leadership styles of the different coaches around the league. Bill is such an interesting guy and he really loves the game and makes it enjoyably for all of us to watch. He’s a brilliant guy and extremely professional. You have to give credit where it’s due.
after hearing my friends, father, uncles, coworkers, cousins etc. talk out of their ass about football, it's refreshing and enjoyable to listen to someone that actually understands the game
I love when Bill gives a real answer because it’s like a football nuke going off. Bill will answer questions but he will never provide fuel for a media fire- which is often what the sports writers are (understandably) looking for. I really hope someday that he writes a book or memoirs or something like that.
If you ask a real football question to Bill (not the WWE drama crap), he is dying to answer and breakdown the history. He is an NFL history nerd and loves talking about that.
As a Jets fan I'm honored he mentioned Amendola who had to punt and kick for the Jets in the first game Jets-Pats game this season....thank you Bill for allowing us Jets fans to be the gum on the bottom of your shoes.
This was a great answer to a great question. No drama which many reporters are hoping for. Just like money, experience only matters if you don't have any. Bill is rich.
This man has a football knowledge library in his brain... who woulda guessed a question so seemingly uninteresting would unlock such an interesting answer... good on you reporter and thank you BB, we cant take for granted how much of a legend he is
Bill offers one of two things for every question asked: It's either a Master Class in football like this one is, or it's a cleverly crafted elusive reply. both of which come with the stone face, which is why I call him "The Great Sphinx".
This has to be the most impressive & detailed response from any NFL coach in history of our game. Wow! Thank you Coach! I'll be studying this clip for years to come.
@@p51abc - The other issue, as the OP said, is that actually revealing the game plan and preparations would freely give away crucial knowledge that he doesn't want to reveal during the season.
I’ve rooted against Bill almost every game he’s coached. Almost always I was disappointed. This dudes a legend, and truly loves the sport. You can’t love football and hate this dude.

Bill will always be a great coach on the defensive side of the football. In terms of a head coach he will always be overrated without the GOAT, which was proven last year, and will be proven again this year when Tampa repeats.
@@speakingtruths4215 We shall see , said the blind man !
That's why he gets the big bucks
We're on to Cincinnati
Long snapping is so hard. People don’t realize that they have to have the ball have the same exact rotations over that distance every time give or take a quarter rotation one way or the other. Any time it’s not, you’re increasing the odds of the laces being in the wrong spot because the holder can only adjust the ball so much before the kicker is there to hit it. It’s amazing that guys can be so consistent with their snap
That missed extra point in week 1 turned the AFC Championship Game into an away game...

Ben Volin is the beat reporter who asked the question.
To be honest, it was a good question only if we admit it was coming from someone covering football but knows nothing about football and has probably never played outside of maybe High School. Here’s the easy, basic answer to this question
No, not consistently.
@ SharkAcademy
It was a Devils advocate type question.

You do something at his level every day for half a century and you’ll become an expert at it.
It's fluent, but not effortless. Just like a good general, he knows how that specific element of battle evolved and all the history behind it.

This was a great answer to a great question. No drama which many reporters are hoping for. Just like money, experience only matters if you don't have any. Bill is rich.
The smile on Bill's face after someone finally asked him a great question, not just looking for a reaction.
This man has a football knowledge library in his brain... who woulda guessed a question so seemingly uninteresting would unlock such an interesting answer... good on you reporter and thank you BB, we cant take for granted how much of a legend he is
Bill offers one of two things for every question asked: It's either a Master Class in football like this one is, or it's a cleverly crafted elusive reply. both of which come with the stone face, which is why I call him "The Great Sphinx".
lol +1 for that nickname
This has to be the most impressive & detailed response from any NFL coach in history of our game. Wow! Thank you Coach! I'll be studying this clip for years to come.
Imagine if he got to speak openly and honestly about his teams defensive preparations and concepts that went into the previous game.
The issue is that most of the journalists questions are fishing for controversial soundbites and drama, they aren't asking good questions.
Unless you hate cheaters

Bill smiled, thanked him AND told him it was a great question. Twice.
