  • HOW the AUSTRALIAN MEDICARE system WORKS | Optometrist Explains
Medicare in Australia is not like any other public health care system. Australian residents with a medicare card have access to subsidised eye tests from both optometrist and ophthalmologist visits.

Thanks for the video. I’m a 2nd year optom student in qld, and just started working as an optical dispenser. All these medicare and health fund stuffs confuse me so much, especially when I didn’t grow up here in Australia. Could you do a private health fund video if you have the time?

Btw I found your channel because I’m transitioning to contacts right now, so all your how-to tips, dailies/monthlies contacts recommendation videos are super helpful to me. I’ve been binge watching your videos since yesterday😂 did you get free or discounted contacts as a uni student, or now as an optometrist?

The real value of Medicare rebates has declined greatly since introduction in 1975. Rebates are only available once every 3 years if under 65, or once a year if over 65, for routine preventative exams. Other items are available for patients with symptoms. Many practices now charge a “gap” because they just cannot survive only on the greatly reduced real Medicare rebates.

Hi I'm really interested in studying optometry in Australia. May I ask where are you currently working at? I've been wondering about the places where optometrist in Australia can work. Do optometrist in Australia or NZ work just in optical shops? Is there hospital or private clinics for optometrist?
