    I started running this adventure in the 90s and it’s still one of the few physical possessions I’ve kept since the 90s. I don’t even have AD&D 2nd edition books anymore.

    Running this currently using 1st Ed. AD&D via Roll20.

      The first book has so many awesome hooks for an endless amount of sessions if you are willing to put in the work as a game master. Haranshire is an awesome place to explore and never get bored also a great place for their strongholds!

    I'm 3 sessions into dming this campaign. It is the most roleplaying I've ever done and the most I've ever had players do. This is not a bad thing lol. They just arrived in Thurmeister. Carl Sargent was a genius when he wrote this for the things he doesn't tell in the book. I did inform my players in session zero that classes such as paladins, cavaliers, lawful good priests would not be recommended I am also working on expanding the goblin enclave to be larger than originally written.

    • @RpgLoremaster
      @RpgLoremaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Carl Sargent has done indeed an amazing job. This is by far the most RP intensive adventure. So much rp opportunities for players. Have a blast with it. Got many years of fun in it for sure!

    • @adampender2482
      @adampender2482 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RpgLoremaster I'm not sure where to go after the goblins though. I'm going to estimate that everyone will be between 2-3 level. What did you do? And did you use Sargents recommendation of using the optional training rules?

    • @RpgLoremaster
      @RpgLoremaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tend to use the training rules from Player Options books, kinda homebrewed. I let them advance in levels with out trainers but their ''milestone levels'' 5-10-15-20 they have to find a mentor, that will expand their wisdom of their class to proceed, hence giving them mastery, grand mastery etc. Been using it for years so its infused to all my games even some of 5th edition ones. Gives the players reason to actively become better at their class, and of course spawn new rp hooks and opportunities.
      Regarding your choices after the goblins, I'd say if all of your players are 3rd level you can easily allow them to explore areas close to Broken Spire Keep, and add in the way a couple of interesting encounters. Having them watch an attempt of kidnap form the thugs of the keep for instance, that will send them seek them out, or intervening and trying to locate their base.
      With another group I had, I send them to the Pilgrims side quest first, so they had the encounter with Lord Parfrey and his son which can fill them in about the Broken Keep history and such, and also put them at the interesting spot of having to take the son with them for adventuring. Its a fun encounter to play with you players, My last group denied his request to join thme , but one of my players found a way to disguise him as a regular guard that they would had as an escort leading in a really fun encounter when they were attacked and realized that they have to kill the attackers AND save the Lord's son or else things would have been really bad for them.

    so ive watched this at least 5 times and im still a little confused what requirements should i put in place when my players make their characters. do they just have to have a reason to like harenshire?

  • @totesMagotes83
    @totesMagotes83 ปีที่แล้ว

    What if the players want to leave the Haranshire? Do you try really hard to keep them in the area, or do you let them adventure outside of it for a while? If so, how do you lure them back in?

  • @sumdude4281
    @sumdude4281 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've been running this in 5e. I had the players meet Jelenneth with Tauster when they went to Thurmaster. She has since travelled with the group as a NPC. I've skipped her abduction and the Hog Brook. They are heading to the New Mire now. I am also dropping in the adventure The Shattered Circle for which she will go along as well. THEN I will have her get kidnapped post Shattered Circle. As RGPL has hinted at, you need your players to care about her otherwise how far are they going to go find a girl they've never even met? Also dropping the wearbear I think and just go into the Orcs with them able to track them back to the Thornwood. Also, have Carl and others who are Dominated to have a hint of smell on them like fish and give them minor gills behind their jaw lines. Foreshadow. Just my thoughts thus far.
    Would love to here RPGL what changes you have made in a seperate video. A kind of how to run the game, lessons learned.

    • @RpgLoremaster
      @RpgLoremaster  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is brilliant! Your changes are exactly what I am talking about in the video. It might need some extra work to add em in but the results are soooo much better, the game becomes more organic in my opinion that way. When I will complete the series I will add last video with my main changes on the adventure, along with interesting unexpected turn of events. Those are the best one! Thanks for sharing, this is great help for the rest of us!

      @@RpgLoremaster Thanks RpgL! I'm also adding the Gates of Firestorm Peak at a later date as well. I look forward to more of your videos and I will update as we move along in my campaign as to what works for me and what doesn't :)
      Having Jelleneth as an NPC has allowed the party to get closer to her but also provided me a voice in the group to guide the party. It has worked out better than I expected. Once she goes missing it should be a big blow to the group. That's my theory.

      @@RpgLoremaster Yeah, Red Hand of Doom is how I found your channel.
      Something that I've been wanting to do is to make a free homage [discount] version of Red Hand of Doom for Basic Fantasy (its a free compiling, simplifying, and modernizing of moldvay basic with free formats to publish campaigns or supplements. My working tittle is "Against Banners Myriad" where the reframing is having the invasion force a bunch of different warbands joining forces under a Ring of Dark Highlords.
      I've been working on it off and on for a year (it's in a series) It's difficult to tow the line of drawing inspiration and making a faithful love-letter versus ripping off wholesale and just making a lesser product.
      I wanted to do this because of how hard it was to get a copy of the original Red Hand of Doom (Print on demand is finally covering RHoD, it didn'twhen I started the project.)
      Sorry idk why I just gushed

    Kuo-toans are fish-men, not lizard-men. Essentially, they're deep ones. In fact, I'll be using that section of the adventure for a deep one lair I'm putting in an upcoming campaign.

    I'm thinking of running this in Castles & Crusades someday. I'd want to tweak it a bit to make the narrative less colonial. Make the goblins less dumb, give the goblins a Cleric instead of a "tribal shaman", have the Aaracockra threatened by human poachers instead of Gnolls, or maybe it is Gnolls, but there's a friendly Gnoll village too, with its own unique problems/quests, maybe a Gnoll NPC mentor for one of the PC's? Could have an optional side-quest somewhere where you can help the Lizardfolk against human poachers that want to make them into leather... more ideas?
