Dodge Charger Ticking Noise In Engine (Common Lifter Problems With 3.6 Pentastar Engine)

  • Hey Good People!
    I had a 2014 Dodge Charger in the shop this week. My customer was concerned about the ticking/tapping from under the hood. I could tell right off the bat that it was the common lifter or rocker issue that these 3.6 Pentastars have.
    As I have mentioned in some of my other videos, these engines can be found in a number of Dodge and Chrysler products. The popular ones include the Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300, Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Durango to name a few.
    I make these videos because I love to share my knowledge with you guys, and I hope you learn something because that's always the goal.
    Your Favorite Mechanic,
    Alex

    I am so pleased that I came across your channel. I immediately subscribed I have a 2012 Dodge Charger R/T that I had a mechanic friend of mine rebuilt the engine. The heads were redone. I replaced the camshaft, the timing belt, the lifters, the rocker arms and oil pump. After all that I still have that ticking /tapping noise. It is louder when the car is in idle, but very noticeable even when driving. I did not use Mopar lifters which I have read is highly recommended. I live in Canton GA. What part of Georgia is your shop in. I am a teacher and not working this summer. I would love to get your assessment. After watching your videos, I'm very hopeful you can help me.
    I read through all the comments hoping I could find out what part of Georgia you're in. Morrow is not that far from Canton. I'll give you a call during business hours.

I have a 2009 charger 3.5 and making the same ticking/ knocking noise it sounds a bit louder once i turn the car on but after a few minutes when the engine is warmer noise seems to quite down. Just ordered rocker arm assembly hopefully that will fix the issue. Also looking into doing the job myself any advice or specific instructions that i would need to follow other than swapping out rocker assembly. Thanks. Keep up the good content. 👍

    Yes. Higher quality and thicker oil. My Manual cleary states 5w-30 for best fuel efficiency however 10 30 and 10 40 can also be used. I have a 2011 caprice ppv and used 5w30 amsoil and STILL had lifter failure. I switched to 10w 60 Redline full synthetic which is the same that BMW M series calls for. My L77 is loving that 10 60. 5w30 IMO maybe a little more efficient but not good enough protection.

    yeah I have this same issue on my 2016 dodge grand caravan 62k miles. Started off with a 302, cylinder mis fire code. Got the coils and plugs replaced (they replaced them with auto lights to!) code came back the next day. Took it to another shop, they said it was an internal problem and that it was going to cost 7k to fix. After researching this issue, it seems like its very common. I decided to go ahead and try to fix this myself. You helped me find a solution thanks

    It's a Chrysler issue since days long past. The 3.7 and 4.7 engines from the late 90ies til 2010 had it, more so in the first few years, the 3.5 and 4.0 had the rocker arm issues, the hemis have the famous tick mostly due to rocker arms, exhaust bolts braking off, the 3.6 from 2010 to 2015 had the issue. And even the old mitsubishis from the 80ies and 90ies, 1.6, 2.0 engines that came from the joint venture had the exact same problem, usually at 60 to 100 k miles ish. The roller issue started on the 3.6 and 5.7 engines in 2010, where the v8s like to eat up camshafts because of it. Supposedly they got it under control by 2013 or 2014 ish, but going Meyle or Melling is never wrong to avoid bad juju ;)

    • @Josh-bu4zx
      @Josh-bu4zx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 4.0 didn't have rocker arm issues, if you hear one ticking it's most likely due to the hydraulic lifters, they become worn out when oil is used that doesn't have the proper amount of zinc in it. Modern oils are not designed for old push rod motors, as a result a lot of these old motors will begin to make ticking sounds as the hydraulic lifters begin to wear. They will still keep running no problem, just with a bit of noise. The best way to avoid that is to just use Shell Rotella T5 diesel oil which has plenty of zinc in it.

  • @SethJayson
    @SethJayson 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Same engine is in the Town & Country and caravan minivans, and the Pacifica followups. Ours started ticking at 99.9k miles. Shop tried an oil treatment hoping it was a sticky roller or lifter, but of course it just kept ticking, so I asked them to just open it up and replace rockers and lifters. Not sure how long it was ticking. Don't know yet if we screwed up the camshafts as well or not. Wasn't so bad that it started losing power or throwing engine codes yet.

    Hello Alex, I have a 2010 3.5 Dodge charger and it has that same noise...but today out of the blue, i felt a vibration while i was driving it only lasted like ten seconds and went away...what do you think that is...

    Hello I would love a piece of advice ! My 2010 charger has a messed up timing chain. If my mechanic says he can fix it is it worth it? Or is it likely to break again

    • @AlexTheCarDoctor
      @AlexTheCarDoctor  ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the mileage, but if it’s done right with quality parts, it should last you a while without any issues from the timing chain.

    Car Doctor, I got a 2012 Dodge charger the 3.6 L Pinstar it’s having trouble starting. I have to turn the ignition on and off and crank it several times to get it to start and sometimes it starts sometimes it doesn’t When it starts it will idle fine and drives fine but when I try to accelerate fast, it spits and sputters and pops every time , I’ve replaced the crankshaft Possession sensor , fuel pumps, spark plugs and alternator all in one day I did check the coil for arc Marks and they looked good no arc marks i’m stumped on what to do next

    Hey Alex I’m having this exact same problem with my 2013 Dodge Chargers. I purchase it at the dealership they confirm that it was a police car it has 80,000 miles. I have a few friends who works at different dealership explain that it sounds like the lifters & another one stated it could be the Full Synthetic Oil I’ve been using maybe the weight of the oil is too light. Do you think that could be true?

    Hello Alex the Car Doctor, I just purchased a dodge 200 with the Pentastar 3.6 VVT. There is a slight ticking noise upon start up that goes away after 5-10 seconds. Then the engine runs strong with plenty of power. The engine has 23,000 miles. Do you think this will get worse and the engine will need to be repaired or is slight ticking on startup relatively normal? Please let me know what you think. Thank you
