If you hear a lifter tick that means the lifter roller is worn and the cam is getting scored. If you have a misfire and you want to determine if it's a bad cam. i try to never let my hemi idle for very long due to this exact reason, i always try to keep the oil pressure around 50-60 lbs, its only got 10k miles on it now so wish me luck! thanks for going into detail on this subject.
I heard the lifter tick/cam problem really isn't a problem unless you let the car idle all the time. Sucks if you are a police force and have a whole fleet of Hemi Chargers idling for 10 hours a day.
@@3pAcsJs You'll be ok it's a bullet proof engine otherwise. The best thing you can do is change your oil every 3k and don't listen to the people who say if you use synthetic you can go 5k or 6k. It's still every 3k regardless of the oil.
I’m not a mechanic but I work a lot around cars and I always hear a tick in a dodge v8. Doesn’t matter if it has 1000 miles or 100000 miles they all tick and during a cold start they all have a piston slap noise.
The recycled E-class chassis (LH) was one of the few good things to come out of the DaimlerChrysler merger. The trans is an NAG 1 (Neu Automatik Getrieb) 5-speed... pretty reliable. This major restyle (LD) version of the platform included an upgrade to rack and pinion steering... the earlier models had sloppy feeling recirc ball from MB. The early LD vintage looks much better than the earlier years too, while the most recent have an overdone, look-at-me apperance (IMHO). The HEMI tic gets ample attention on TH-cam. Some think it is an early warning of cam lobe wear from inadequate lube flow to the cam and lifter valley... some think it is an early warning of dreaded dropped valve seat failure. Both camps think cylinder deactivation in more recent model years increases the likelyhood either expensive failure. At nearly 200K, that Charger looks damn good.
I had a 2010 charger with the v6 I bought from my dads work (old company car) with 220k on it. I sold it with 266k and it was still rock solid. The guy I sold it to still has it and has about 300k on it now. Love these cars
I'm driving a friend's 08 daytona with the hemi while I'm waiting for my Saab's parts to ship and the thing is running great at 206k miles. I thought these engines weren't reliable. Owner has had it since new, said the only engine issue has been overheating once in a while. Never misfires, or runs rough. Great engine, but even with cylinder deactivation I'm getting 17.Xmpg on mostly rural roads
Work on the police version of this all the time. The hemi tick turns into a small chirp which is a lifter getting stuck and the end result is a camshaft being eaten. Seen this at as low as 44,000 miles. Extended idling will cause this due to not enough oil flow to the cam. The one in the video has not had this due to it not idling long periods of time. Keep in mind this has its own version of afm just like gm. Great video tho wizard
You remind me so much of the mechanic I have used for over 25 yrs. I am fortunate to also consider him a friend and never hesitate to refer him to others. Always be a man of your word and the business will always come. Great job.
What I appreciate even more than your considerable knowledge and experience is your honesty. That's the number one thing I look for in mechanics and repairmen, and physicians. Kudos!
My 2006 R/T has less miles than that. Reseated the valve seats so they don't drop, changed the lifters to non MDS and removed & capped the solenoids. Did a tune with doablotech to shut off any mds codes. Installed a 6.1 cam and it runs smooth with stock exhaust. Don't want it too loud or you won't hear anything when there is a problem.
It’s from Oklahoma not Nebraska ;) up north we have the infamous rust monster eating vehicles less than 5 years old. if you don’t get the salt flushed off at a car wash between ice and snow storms it happens fast
Our 2012 Charger R/T is very similar to this one, except for it being black with leather interior. I'm a proponent of the late-model Chrysler hemis - I've owned three, had others for company trucks and all of them have been rock-solid and dependable. We still own my '04 Ram 4x4 hemi that I bought new; it's pushing 200k miles as well and has been silly reliable and solid. We've also owned an '06 Charger R/T, which was traded in on the 2012 when it was new. They're a lot of fun for the money, very comfortable and the aftermarket is strong, too. Yes, that oil pressure switch is a common replacement item on them; I just replaced the one on the 2012 after the dreaded "99psi" issue and don't let Wizard fool you - that mother is a bear to get to, especially if you have large man-hands like me. You wind up having to get under the car and temporarily removing the alternator to access it... As for the "tick", I've only witnessed it in my Ram and only when it's cold; it dissipates fairly quickly once it's been running a minute. Relax about the tick, people - as Wizard says, it's not a big deal. I keep the oil changed in all our hemi vehicles and I only use Mobil1 in them, along with good Hastings filters. I'd rather spend the money on oil changes now than engine rebuilds later. Oh, and even the "base" hemi 5.7 (370hp) is a quick animal, too - our 2012 ran a 13.94 stock when new; I took it down the track just for the fun of it and it surprised me a little. Not bad for a 4000+ pound full dresser car - and on long trips, the car is in the high 20's on fuel economy, too. I'm pleased Wizard agrees with me on these - they're good engines, always have been. -Ed on the Ridge

This is crazy and I really appreciate it. I've got a 70K '05 Hemi Magnum, and it's got both the tick, which I was sure was an exhaust manifold leak but I could never find; and it periodically throws a wrong oil weight code. Guess it's time for sensors!
My 1988 Chrysler LeBaron Convertible had 2.2L inline 4. The motor really was not that bad. We put near 300K on it. The sound was not really annoying, but made me take pause every once in a while. That was cam slap. You could hear the OHC slapping away at idle.
I’ve had my 14’ Hemi Charger for about 4 years and it’s been a phenomenal car. It’s also close to 200k and aside from some suspension that just started creaking, it’s been mechanically perfect.
Cool. I have a 14' Charger R/T Myself, and other than front facing lower control arm replacement, runs like a top. Got 100,000 miles now, and I take meticulas care of it. It had 59,000 miles when I bought it. I always use Mobil 1 5w 20, and change it every 5,000 miles.
Funny enough, if you are always pushing high rpms it means those parts get properly oiled and no hemi tick can form. Idle her too long and you got a tick though so its really a catch 22

My 09 RT had the tick. No big deal I drove it to 250k miles with no issues. General maintenance items. Front suspension was shot when I sold it. My modified 96 neon has a similar tick. I love driving that car though. 33mpg average, it's fast and handles beautifully.
I love my 2017 Ram! It’s got that loose manifold bolt problem, Hemi tick, and I feel a clunk in the rear end coming to or leaving from a stop. Other than the bump everything else I can live with. The bumps harsh sometimes. Brought it in and they kept saying it was the way I was driving or they’d say they’d plug in a scanner and reset the transmission. The first generation of that platform was in 2005. I bought and still own one, a Dodge Magnum RT. It is rated to tow 3800lbs if it has the tow package that consisted of a larger radiator and special load leveling shocks on the rear. It came with a 2" receiver hidden hitch. I installed a Drawtite 1 1/4" hitch on mine that has the 3500lb rating. Yes the car can tow 3500lbs. My Hemi doesn't tick. It sounds like a sewing machine. But the 2005 thru 2008 Hemis didn't have variable cam timing.
My '07 300C with the Hemi has just cracked the metric equivalent of 100,000 miles, and it's still extremely quiet. I don't know if this is down to my religious oil change schedule, the quality of oil and filters I use, or just dumb luck, but that engine has been extremely reliable in the 4 years I've had the car. My oil pressure sensor went out at almost exactly 10 years of age too - Seems to be a common time for the OEM sensor to fail.

Wizard, but thank you for all the information and time you take out of your day to keep us well informed.
The issue with the Hemi 5.7l V8's tick is because the angle of the lifter bores is almost flat and the camshaft is much higher than the old 5.7l Hemi, from 2003 - 2008. This flat planed design gave better valvetrain geometry and increased power quite a bit. However due to this design, the oil would not sufficiently lubricate the valvetrain well, especially if it was idled a lot, when the RPM'S are generally below 950. What FCA failed to do was put in a higher volume, higher pressure oil pump and they hardened a lobe on the front camshaft lobe, which would have pumped the oil at greater rate during idle or low speeds and prevented such a catastrophe and the hardened cam lobe was harder on the lifters. While this issue is less than 5% of all Hemis, the next statement will help. There is a You Tuber by the name of Reignited and he is a Mopar Guru, especially when it comes to the 5.7l v8 hemis. He is the one who found that by putting a Hellcat oil pump in these 5.7l v8, which operates at a higher volume, that this issue was solved. The Hellcat engine oil pump is approximately between $700 - $1000 for the part and that is much cheaper than spending $5000 on rebuilding the top end of this engine. th-cam.com/video/jkNOXWGXADM/w-d-xo.html As far as FCA/ Stellantis is concerned, and this is coming from a Mopar guy, most of FCA's vehicles are junk. The few reliable vehicles they make are the Grand Caravan and Town and Country, (2015 onwards, the 2008-2014 minivans had major electrical fuse box issues), 300, Challenger and Charger, Viper (2009 - 2017), Durango and the Ram 1500 with gas engines. They are not as reliable as Toyotas ( then again, which manufacture is? ) but these vehicles that I mentioned will last you a long time with minor repairs as long as you maintain them very well. Percentage wise, from a reliability standpoint, these vehicles are lemons approximately less than 5% of the time, thus it is generally speaking, very good buys. The new Pacifica, I haven't heard much about its reliability yet. It is still a recent vehicle. Their problematic vehicles are: the entire Jeep line up; all their Fiat vehicles; Journey, 200C and the 2012-16 Dart. These junk vehicles that I mentioned have a failure rate of between 10-30%. The 30% is for Fiat, Jeeps are 20-25% and the Dodges are between 10-20%. By failure, I mean it has given owners consistent headaches in a short period of time. These good and bad ratings are for all FCA / Stellantis vehicles from 2009 onwards.
Finally someone with real answers and knowledge. Swap the oil pump and you're good. I'd still disable mds and delete the mds plugs swap the lifters and camshaft, springs.
Great video! I feel these cars get underrated by people. I have one and I have a family member with a 300 which has a ton of miles. They have been very reliable and they get decent highway MPG. In town mileage is not so great but for a big motor full size car it’s good. This car should get more love then it does.
In January we inherited a 2012 5.7L Ram with the Hemi tick upon start up. The tick quickly goes away. The exhaust manifold tick is a fairly easy repair, the roller/cam tick would be an expensive repair. The truck is very fun to drive, probably the most fun truck we have ever owned. At 138,000 miles we’re a bit apprehensive about keeping it. The body and frame are in mint (California truck) condition so even if the engine fails, it would be worth the money to repair it.
I'm really really surprised Wizard said he likes these Hemis. I figured he'd say different. I work for a used dealership and we get tons of hemi-powered cars and truck rolling through here. It's about 50-50 if it has the hemi tick in varying degrees of loudness. As you might expect most customers don't want to buy a vehicle that ticks right off the bat so we do have to fix a lot of them.
Hey @Car Wizard, I don't have a hemi powered vehicle. I do have a 2005 GMC Canyon, with 3.5L five cylinder engine. I notice it has a slight tick when running, more noticed after warmed up. You mentioned it as normal, part of the valve train on the hemi. Would you or anybody you know have experience with my vehicle's engine, and know if that is normal to have a slight tick on it, too? Thank you for everything you do, we learn a lot of new things every time we watch your videos!

Seriously all the direct injection motors tick off the lot because the cam driven fuel pumps damn near touching the hood and firewall are thrustin' away. It's fun that they try to insulate them with some foam condoms and underhood diaper but the real solution would be to not put it on top of the engine!
@@emotionz3 the real solution to direct injection period is to go back to port-only or include a dual setup. these DI-only engines are fucking nightmares long term and its only in the US they are widespread as other countries get the dual setup making long term ownership cost needlessly more expensive for US customers
Finally, the truth about the infamous hemi tick. I’ve seen several TH-cam videos and read many articles about this. And while it’s not a good thing and the noise is not particularly pleasant, it’s not the end of the world either. And it’s more common than you think. Mid to late 70s General Motors 350 cu in engines, the workhorse engine of General Motors,, had valve train tick. My mother had it in her 1977 Olds Cutlass. My 1975 Pontiac Firebird had it. The injectors tick very loud even more so starting 2011.they put noise insulation over the rails to help. The lifter rollers wear out and wipe out the cam lobes. That happens because they moved the cam higher in the block for better valve train geometry. Now the cam does not get constantly bathed in as much oil and there is no oil gally feed to the lifter bores for lubrication. It gets whatever washes over the lifters. If you hear a lifter tick that means the lifter roller is worn and the cam is getting scored. If you have a misfire and you want to determine if it's a bad cam. Do 4 or 5 Accelerations to the redline. Then the engine will start to misfire bad
Let it idle and it will smooth out. When the ramp on the cam lobe is damaged it causes the lifter to collapse on hard acceleration. Even if you don't hear a tick it can still be a bad cam.
i try to never let my hemi idle for very long due to this exact reason, i always try to keep the oil pressure around 50-60 lbs, its only got 10k miles on it now so wish me luck! thanks for going into detail on this subject.
I heard the lifter tick/cam problem really isn't a problem unless you let the car idle all the time. Sucks if you are a police force and have a whole fleet of Hemi Chargers idling for 10 hours a day.
@@AaronSmith-kr5yf A lot of fleets switched over to V6 models because of cam problems with the Hemi
Huge thanks for the quick explanation of the Hemi tick I have been scratching my head to troubleshoot it. Thanks more annoying than anything
I had a 2010 charger with the v6 I bought from my dads work (old company car) with 220k on it. I sold it with 266k and it was still rock solid. The guy I sold it to still has it and has about 300k on it now. Love these cars
WOW!!
These cars were built to last !
I love Mrs Wizard's comments in the background.
I would imagine using a good oil with frequent oil changes would help

Our 2012 Charger R/T is very similar to this one, except for it being black with leather interior.
I'm a proponent of the late-model Chrysler hemis - I've owned three, had others for company trucks
and all of them have been rock-solid and dependable.
We still own my '04 Ram 4x4 hemi that I bought new; it's pushing 200k miles as well and has been
silly reliable and solid. We've also owned an '06 Charger R/T, which was traded in on the 2012 when
it was new. They're a lot of fun for the money, very comfortable and the aftermarket is strong, too.
Yes, that oil pressure switch is a common replacement item on them; I just replaced the one on
the 2012 after the dreaded "99psi" issue and don't let Wizard fool you - that mother is a bear to
get to, especially if you have large man-hands like me.
You wind up having to get under the car and temporarily removing the alternator to access it...
As for the "tick", I've only witnessed it in my Ram and only when it's cold; it dissipates fairly quickly
once it's been running a minute. Relax about the tick, people - as Wizard says, it's not a big deal.
I keep the oil changed in all our hemi vehicles and I only use Mobil1 in them, along with good
Hastings filters. I'd rather spend the money on oil changes now than engine rebuilds later.
Oh, and even the "base" hemi 5.7 (370hp) is a quick animal, too - our 2012 ran a 13.94 stock when
new; I took it down the track just for the fun of it and it surprised me a little. Not bad for a 4000+
pound full dresser car - and on long trips, the car is in the high 20's on fuel economy, too.
I'm pleased Wizard agrees with me on these - they're good engines, always have been.

The Hellcat engine oil pump is approximately between $700 - $1000 for the part and that is much cheaper than spending $5000 on rebuilding the top end of this engine. th-cam.com/video/jkNOXWGXADM/w-d-xo.html
As far as FCA/ Stellantis is concerned, and this is coming from a Mopar guy, most of FCA's vehicles are junk.
I have a 2020 charger rt 5.7, is the hellcat oil pump plug and play? What else is needed?
Great video! I feel these cars get underrated by people. I have one and I have a family member with a 300 which has a ton of miles. They have been very reliable and they get decent highway MPG. @@Zark-Muckerberg and saving fuel ?
In January we inherited a 2012 5.7L Ram with the Hemi tick upon start up. The tick quickly goes away. The exhaust manifold tick is a fairly easy repair, the roller/cam tick would be an expensive repair. The truck is very fun to drive, probably the most fun truck we have ever owned. At 138,000 miles we’re a bit apprehensive about keeping it. The body and frame are in mint (California truck) condition so even if the engine fails, it would be worth the money to repair it.
If you have a quickly disappearing tick, most likely a less serious problem as opposed to a persistent one.
I'm really really surprised Wizard said he likes these Hemis. I figured he'd say different. I work for a used dealership and we get tons of hemi-powered cars and truck rolling through here. It's about 50-50 if it has the hemi tick in varying degrees of loudness.

Here’s what the shop foreman said at the local Chevy shop. ‘Don’t worry about it.’
'80 and early Ford power steering pumps. Seemed like every one of those things growled.
My 1979 f100 had that stupid growl, never had a problem with the power steering.
