They should have kept the re-issue the same size as the original! I don't want a tank on my wrist.

If Lieutenant Frank Bullitt was working today, he’d wear the Hamilton Khaki automatic 38mm. That’s the closest modern relative of the vintage Benrus, with the red-tipped seconds hand and the polished bezel. But I don’t mind the Benrus reissue. Sure, it’s bigger - everything is these days. But it keeps all the basic 3061 elements and presents them in a reliable Swiss made package.
I think that's well spoken brother. Although, if I was "on the job" today, I'd be wearing the DW-5600 full tilt, around the clock, 3 spares on hand at all times and in all places with my backup piece. LOL. Cheers, D
Thanks for this video. I have the 50th Anniversary D-Day commemorative issue that I believe is the watch that the new Benrus should have been based on. The specs are much more in tune with your original being at about 34.5mm with 18mm lugs and having a ETA 2801 hand wind only movement. This watch is a joy to aware.

wouldn't 36mm been the "sweet spot " ?? These watches were meant to be small 36mm tops...Agree about the rally strap being no bueno ...
Hand winding is also preferred imo.... Great vid ..thanks..

Hey Kurt! Thank you for the kind words about my Dad's strap. I do love it though wouldn't buy a different one I figure. Tho the Hanhart bund straps are amazingly good, not a whole lot of cuff straps in this decade. I still think 38 would be great. My vintage one wears a bit small and for me lug to lug is the best indicator of general wearability. The crown on my vintage one is small too and will likely give out one day. Thankfully I've got this biggun on hand at all times to drop into the slot on Mustang day. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!! Best, D
Man I couldn’t agree more with you, I appreciate the thought behind the rally strap but it just doesn’t do it for me. Of course that can be replaced, but a green military strap wouldn’t be the first alternative to come to my mind… Besides, you’re still left with the moon sized dial. I was so excited when I first saw it announced but in my opinion the ‘modernised’ aesthetic takes away all the timeless charm of the original. Personally feel they should have took the same approach as Timex did with the Marlin. Anyway I digress, thanks for the video!

I have the old watch and I can say it is one of the best running watches I have owned. Now for its old age it doesn’t run fully on time. But it is a great watch

I got one of the reissues a year or so ago. I sent it back for all the reasons stated here. Mostly, it is just waaaaaaaaay to big.
If I had a bigger wrist I'd have loved it. I'm likely to keep this one tho. My vintage one has become a bit precious. LOL. Have a great weekend!!

Just a note. 39.5mm is not “gigantor”. Undersized watches are not better. The idea that everything in the 60s and 70s was better is straight up silly nonsense. 34mm is objectively too small for your wrist. It looks silly. The 39.5mm is much more proportional on your wrist. Maybe its lugs could be a mm shorter, but it is *proportional* on your wrist.

Subjectively, the og Benrus is a touch on the small side but I feel they dropped the ball on the reissue opportunity. 38 would have been just right. The 39 feels way too big but that is likely because it's sitting next to the other one. The strap has to go. Poor quality and no need for rally style on a field watch IMO.All that said, I'm glad they reissued this watch in a generally more approachable size for the masses and more people can get to experience the Bullitt watch. The originals are over 2k now and I could never go that high. Hope you had a great weekend! Best, D
I own a 39.5 mm Seiko SRPG „field watch" that I never wear because of its stupid Invicta size. Field watches have generally large, flat dials, slim bezels, long lugs, all of which make them wear huge. I even consider my 38 mm Mark XV too large for my near 18 cm wrist. While I do not think that minute vintage sizes look proper today, I see no reason why a retro military three-hander (or even a dress watch) should wear larger than a diver.

34mm isn't too small for anyones wrist, Hemingway wore it, so can you. Modern "proportions" are wrong, it'll take time for the pendulum to swing back, but no man should be wearing anything larger than 38mm unless it's strapped outside a diver's suit or spacesuit. Watches aren't jewelry, smaller is better.
