Any "watch enthusiast" who shits on a G-Shock is a poser, plain and simple. I turned 30 earlier this year, and my family gifted me a new Tudor Black Bay. It will be my heirloom, if I ever start a family of my own. I'm currently wearing a $400 G-shock as I type this, GWM-B5000, that I fell in love with after TGV at The Urban Gentry did a review on it. My next purchase is going to be the new Timex Navi XL automatic, when they get back in stock. I'd love a Rolex Submariner, if i could afford it. But I will never sneer a $300 watch from a reputable manufacturer, like say Orient.

That last "You gotta get buzzed in!" "OH GAWD!" killed me! lol
As a handyman I once did work for the MAERSK corporation. I did odd jobs at their main offices in denmark. At one point the secretary for the top CEO asked me to take a watch to the watchstore for repairs. I was allso given two pens that needed to be serviced. Expensive items.
Anyways, I made my way down to the fancy store in the expensive part of midtown and tried walking through the door but found it locked. Took me a while t relize there was a bell... Rang it... nothing happened. Rang it again... and then someone replied: what do you want' we don't selll to walkins and this is an expensive store.
I was like WTF?! buut managed just to say I was there to get a watch and some ink pens serviced...
She did't believe me and started questioning me about it.
Ultimately she let me inside, through what turned out to be like an airllock in space. close the door behind you before you can open the next. When I got in it was like being met by a wall of employees asking me where I got the stuff and basicly accusing me of stealing them...
I was like firstly I don't steal. secondly I am here to pay for them being fixed, not to sell stolen crap. Thirdly I have all reciepts from the owner, his goldcard, membership numbers and whatever else you might need, so cut your fucking crap and get working on it!
As soon as they realized what was actually going on they turned into superfriendly people doing everything they could to make it better...
I just had a helluva lot of fun being a longhaired metal dude who was actually able to put them in their place after they so obviously treated me as a dirty crook based on my looks... allthough my "elite powers" were only on lend from my employer, It was a lovely feeling seeing them scuffle!

@@addiegraves3 sometimes you just get unlucky and end up working with antisocial or clicky coworkers. The good news is getting too close with coworkers is risky and can lead to good or bad things. On top of that you may just be a good listener and many people are not. They just want to do all the talking and people that are willing to listen get taken advantage of. Being a good listener is a double edged sword because though it is appreciated by some and extremely helpful, it leads to being used as an emotional garbage can.
I just think the way this guy gets Joe to go from "whatever" to watch guy in a matter of minutes is great. Another awesome example of that is the very first episode that Steven Rinella came on. Steven was so good at explaining his position and advocating for hunting that he got me and Joe both (and I imagine others) at the same time to go from thinking hunting was just kind of unnecessary and maybe immoral at this point to hunting our own first deer within that year. Steven wasn't trying to force his views or convert anyone, he was simply talking passionately about the thing he loved most and defending it against Joe being kind of silly and challenging a little bit. Joe did a complete 180 and is now one hell of a bow hunter himself. It's also just a really great Rogan podcast episode. Steven and Joe are good friends and Steven has been on many times at this point but that was the beginning. Steven also has what I consider the only good hunting show which is on Netflix now called Meateater.

You don't even have to go all the way into "luxury" territory. The man who is well-dressed, and groomed will have advantages in society over the man who looks and smells like a hobo. A nice watch can be part of this overall package, but it can be something as simple as buying a half-decent suit.

Irony: guy who says he finds luxury distasteful as he exploits modern technology to express his contempt. Remember, yesteryear's luxuries are today's expectations. Taking time off work is a luxury; indoor plumbing, electricity and household appliances are all luxuries. That roof over your head is also a luxury. Condemning "luxury in general" is to misunderstand the entire mission of the common man and the broader marketplace: to minimize labor and maximize leisure, a "luxury" achieved through the optimization of production. www.paradocracy.com/2018/12/the-economics-of-vintage-luxury.html

Both sides had valid points. Yes it’s true someone with an expensive watch could be just owning it to show off and feel it makes them superior. It’s also true someone could love and appreciate having something of such precision and craftsmanship and feel good owning something of such high quality knowing it will last.
To Rogan’s credit once he learned more he was willing to open his mind up and appreciate why someone would love owning these watches. Also credit to the other gentleman for not being defensive but accepting that it was okay for someone else to not understand him yet and took the time to explain his views.

I myself am a watch fan and I think what draws me to them more than anything else is the fact that it takes such a simple universal truth and encapsulates it in a compact, precise way. I’m a big fan of that general concept as it extends to many different forms of art - Newton’s Cradles, Bonsai Trees, Terrariums, etc. The reason why watches are so awesome to me is because there’s something very beautiful about being able to visualize time progressing slowly in such a smooth and direct fashion. Anyone who owns an expensive watch purely for the price or for status is a fucking idiot and probably doesn’t actually like watches. Similar to how lots of folks who drive Lambos don’t actually have an appreciation for the incredible details that go into those cars.

"Watches tells time and can't do much better"
"Cars take you from A to B and can't do much better."
It's not always about _what_ they do, sometimes what matters more is _how_ they do it.
New cars get better mileage, new watches have longer power reserve.
New sports car get faster, new watches get more accurate.
Cars get new functions (thinking of gps, auto pilot etc), watches get new functions as well like moon phase, leap years (even though that might have been around for a while I don't know actually), automated time zone changes etc
New cars get lighter, new watches get lighter. (A bit of a stretch but you get the point)
Even though watches do a quite simple task, there's always room for innovation and improvement :)

Funny thing...I bought a Casio recently...not a G-Shock...just an inexpensive WR 100M. Nice looking watch that I won't be sad if something happens to it. I work nights and wanted the watch for work. I just assumed that it would have a light. It doesn't. I was like WTF? And the hands barely glow. I mean I can hold it under a crazy bright light for 10 minutes and then take it into complete darkness and barely see the hands. It's basically worthless to me at this point for a work watch. So yeah...that light (or well illuminated hands) is definitely something many people take for granted on a watch...at least a utilitarian watch. Now if I'm spending $5k or $10k or even more on a watch...does it have a light will probably be way at the bottom of the list of things I'd look for in that watch. Of course I'll never be in a position to buy a watch like that. I did splurge however and ordered my first G-Shock and it was less than $300 and pained me a little to spend that on a watch. But I feel like it will be a watch that will last me many years.

They're not actually gonna physically do much more than a regular watch, its just that everything that goes into it is meant to be appreciated by the craftsmen/artists/connoisseurs. noth606 Grand Seikos are great watches. No doubt. You don’t need to sell us on a Grand Seiko. There are many of us who are watch connoisseurs who may even know more than you do. Btw no need to put down Swiss watches. We don’t have to all like the same things. If people like a Rolex or a Patek ....great! If people like a Grand Seiko....great! If we all liked the same things and wear the same things...this world would be boring. The whole point of Vic’s comment was that we wear “nice” watches because we appreciate the complications, the engineering, the beauty of such things.

tip #1 about collecting watches, don't settle for a cheaper alternative...save up and wait to get the watch you really want. I made the mistake of buying an alternative, it was still a very nice watch, but I was always wanting something else in the back of my head the entire time.

Some amazing entry level watches on the market at the moment that can help you take that dive. Check out Tudor Black Bay and the Omega Seasmaster 300- either the perfect first “nice watch”.

Grand Seiko took a lot of years to fully develop, and they are cool, and some say an advance. But the Spring Drive movement in a Grand Seiko requires a quartz crystal to function. In effect it is a quartz watch with an improvement in the movement - and costs more, much more than an ordinary $12.95 - $49.95 quartz watch from a big box store. The primary inventor worked on developing it for years without the quartz crystal, if I recall what I read correctly. When Spring Drive shows up in a Timex with the Indiglo feature, and at a price undder $50, then I might buy get one. But at current prices it is a luxury item for those who can afford luxury, not for people with a few thousand in savings but unable to afford a car payment and struggling to buy groceries.

Grand Seiko owner here. Watches get to be an addictive hobby no matter what price point you are looking at. Once you learn about the different mechanisms and uses on top of being able to wind it and hear it tick, it just becomes enamoring. I can appreciate someone wearing a Patek Phillipe that costs 100k or a Seiko that costs 50 bucks, it's all about loving what you have on your wrist and using it for telling the time as a function.

Agree. Bought myself a Orient Bambino V2 rose gold this year to celebrate a good year at work. I’m new to watches so wanted to get something highly functional but I was drawn to the beautiful look. It’s a HUGE jump in price but I’ve got my eyes set on a Grand Sieko in the next year or two depending on achieving a couple goals I have set.
