few translation things to note, first of all, "drawing" as in drawing a card from the deck was a concept that was created in roughly the 14th century, since that was around when playing cards (IE to play Poker and such, though Poker itself wasn't till much later) were invented, Japan on the other-hand didn't start dabbling with playing cards until about 200 years later, and when they did they often used 引く which is often translated as "to pull" to represent the act of drawing, cuz they didn't have a word for it, eventually they just took the word we used "draw" spelled ドロー and pronounced "duh-row" to make the distinction clearer, but 引く is still used fairly frequently, they're essentially synonyms (though technically one's a noun and one's a verb) next, Pot of Greed was never erratad in the OCG to be called a "spell" card, in the OCG to this day they're still referred to as magic cards, or 魔法 cards. Finally you got the one part backwards where you said it went from saying "the deck" to "your deck", it used to say 自分のデッキ "your deck" and now it just sais デッキ "deck"
The old wording of OCG cards is just fascinating. They are either vague or extremely literal in what the card does. I still don't know the first effect, but at least I now know the second effect. Thanks for the video Cap!
1st effect is: pull 2 cards from the deck _then fusion Summon 1 fusion monster that mentions "fallen of albaz" as material from your extra deck, using 2 monsters from your hand, deck, or field as fusion material. you cannot special summon monsters from the extra deck, except fusion monsters, the turn you activate this card_
My weird bit of Pot of Greed trivia is that, while it appears in the anime all the time, in the original manga by Kazuki Takahashi, its first appearance is in the Battle City semi-finals (Kaiba vs Yugi). There are only three duels left after that one, and I'm not sure if it appears in any of those duels either (for reference those are Yugi vs Marik, Yugi vs Bakura, and Yugi vs Atem).
I think they used and abused pot of greed because some plays of the manga needed more cards to be made in the actual cards, so they said "and now they draw pot of greed"
Yeah, it's only used once in the manga where Yugi activates it in response to Kaiba's attack in his battle phase (every spell acted like quick play in battle city rules) to increase Osiris' attack. Interesting thing is that Pot of Greed actually precedes the manga appearance by about 2 years. It debuted Dark Duel Stories in 13 July 2000 while manga chapter released on Shonen Jump in 11 March 2002. To this day I don't know if Pot of Greed is a Kazuki Takahashi creation or Konami.
@@onparalelkenarag Making Pot Of Greed a quickplay that only lets you draw cards if your opponent attacks your monster might have made it fine when it was released and the game was slower. It would still be overpowered today, but I could see it being fine to use for a few years at least before being banished to the forbidden list forever.
4:50 There was a different video that explained when the OCG first launched it had two different rule sets, one of them being basically the junior rules but with one major difference... any spell/trap card acted like a continuous card unless specified otherwise. Stuff like Pot of Greed and I think Reinforcements had the same "destroy this card" at the end of their text. This lasted until around early 2000s when they dropped that alternate rule set entirely.
Pot of greed is such an iconic yugioh icon and in pop culture as well even being banned for so many years (and actually being playable in rush duels) and all the different variations that joke or make it less unfair like duality extravagance etc.
I think the pot of greed was short printed and the intension was to rip it up when it resolved, because it was too powerful. Like literally destroy it.
while yes ひく (hiku) or rather actually spelled 引く when you include Kanji does mean "pull", it does not relate to searching cards from the deck but just is the "pure" japanese word for drawing a cardas you generally pull it towards yourself. the Term that YGO in Japan uses for "draw" as in drawing cards later on is basically just the english word draw but written in Katakana. I mean most people likely know "Draw! Monster Card"" and in fact when for example looking at japanese pokemon cards even brand new ones use 引く and while we are on the fact of using actual japanese words rather than just transcribing english, Many TCGs also use the Term 山札 (yamafuda) to refer to the deck, which basically translates to "mountain of cards"
Yeah, this is basically akin to how early searchers would tell you to shuffle your deck afterwards. It's hilarious looking back to pre-PST era cards and seeing some of the listed effects. Man, there we some growing pains.
I love that there are a series of cards printed throughout the years that tell a story that involves the pot of greed and the goblin. More cards like these!
Use to just crack packs to collect sets(enjoyed the art) and occasionally would piece together similar cards and what was playing out through the art. Nowhere near the level of detail you have put in and I thankyou for the effort. Very entertaining
I would like to pull 2 cards too. At least it Said from deck. Otherwise it would be more powerful. In magic it would getting 2 cards from outside of game.
The Spirit of Greed is also referenced in the interaction animation for the Pot of Greed mate in Master Duel, where it pops out of the pot briefly to look around.
I’ve figured out how to use Pot of Greed: Upon activation of “Pot of Greed” you may take the top two cards of your deck and add them to your hand in any order you choose. After that effect resolves you are to send “Pot of Greed” from your field to the GY. You can only use a “Pot of Greed” card up to 3 times per turn.
@@themiddleman3060 i havent played too much outside the tag force series so i cant really tell for sure. But maaan tag duels are so fun and chaotic. AIs can either big brain and win you the duel or be a total dumbass and lose the duel and i love it
I had an idea for a "Pot" card. "Pot Potato" You can reveal this card, this card's name becomes "Pot of Greed" until the End Phase. Both players toss a six-sided die back and forth, the player who fails to catch the die or tosses it outside the Field takes double damage equal to the number rolled on the die x200 while the other player draws 2 cards.
"Draw 2 cards, then, you can Special Summon 1 "Number C1000: Numerounius" from the Extra Deck that becomes 10,000 ATK/1000 DEF, and if you do, attach this card to it as material. You can only activate 1 "Pot of Greed" per turn."
I rememeber pulling Avatar of the Pot, first card from a Dark Revelation 2 or 3 pack. I was thinking to myself "I need a way to always see this card with Pot of Greed so I can draw 3 cards". Good times.
They should add a animation to the pot greed mate in master duel where if you activate a pot of greed counterpart it produces to little yugioh cards from the pot and just pulls them back in after a few seconds
Fun fact: while Marik could read the ancient Egyptian writings on The Wind Dragon of Ra, he did never understand what Pot of Greed actually do. Even the top scientist at Kaiba corp who has invested time travel and creating 3D holographic beings from cardboard that sometimes affect the physical world is still studying what Pot of Greed actually do
Of course Pot of Greed has 2 effects. It's first effect is drawing 1 card. Then the second effect is drawing one more card. Pot of Greed allows you to draw *two* cards.

2nd effect is being handsome
Handsome Pot of Greed.
This got me thinking of a possible video: the controversy of MST and the meme: "Does MST negate?"
I guess The Pot exploding in the anime does make more sense now
You forgot how it's implied the spirit might be able to possess other things like the fish in moray of greed
Totally not confused by the random Mass Effect pictures.

That "pull" portion is not correct tho, the word 引くwhile mean pulling generally, when use in card or tabletop game context it also mean draw a card.

I love the whole lore explained with card art
Delinquent Duo demons, Sangan, and Graceful Charity angel got arrested for smuggling a Pot of Greed lmao
I would like to know all sorts of things about the "pot" family of cards, especially the 2-in-1s.
Of course the Goblin of Greed had nothing but bad luck after stealing Pot of Greed. He basically stole a living explosive.

Even after this video i think 99% of us still dont know what Pot of Greed does.
They got arrested because cops found pot (of greed) in their vehicle. Never consent to a vehicle search.
Damn pot of greed really flexing
The secret effect is that it lets you draw 2 cards from the top of your Deck, isn’t it?
Makes me laugh how long this card has been banned and yet how Konami is so allergic it thanks to all its iterations made!

pot of greed doesnt only let you draw 2 THISCANNOTBEREAL

That is a mistranslation. It's not pull, it is draw in this context.

I don’t know about that one
