Yeah it’s those things u do when you haven’t done any jobs at all , once u even got 3-5 under your belt, your good on super cheap jobs like that unless you really need it.
You easily became one of my top content creators. How you edit your vids makes them easy to understand and entertaining to watch. Those 21 min felt like 5 min
I learned to paint and how to weld by working for free for a few months. I weld professionally now, and that experience was definitely worth the time even though I wasn't making anything.
Great content bro! I have a 91 GMC Sierra stepside that I'm building up. I came across your video and gave me more confidence to spray my own truck. You got my sub and 👍
Just a word of encouragement, make more videos. You've got some skills, you obviously research and are willing to learn and get better. Garage diyers like myself absorb grassroots content like this where the creator is really grinding, trying to progress solidly along. There's 1000's of pros with booths, mega $ tools, and I watch them as well. But seeing competent dudes like yourself using HF and doing it in his backyard gives rooks like us hope to be able to do something very well. Good luck my man, and put out more content.
This is a Real one! Dude thank you so much, not only for the body work tips but for having such a great attitude and getting me back on track painting my dodge 1500 in my driveway. The haters had me doubting myself. After seeing another like minded individual doing what the talkers say you can't do, i'm once again ready to handle it. p.s. that shot of the wincheld with the (I think its a) registration sticker on 4 - 20 was i'll AF
Your content reminds me so much of how my experience in body and paint started. My brother in law and myself started out just like this. I eventually moved away from the industry, he still owns amd runs the shop we built together after starting off just like you.
Appreciate this video series my friend. I'm just now considering investing in a small side business doing just this same thing. I have painted two of my cars and the experience alone is worth it to me. It's not always dollars and cents. Knowledge is priceless. I've even set it up to where I'll be spraying a few cars for free. Friends and family members but still. Great video
Great video and best of luck with you side hustle Funnily enough I have been ‘filling and sanding’ today on my daughters old Land Rover that is now mine! Just completed the metal work now attempting to make it look ‘pretty’. Looking forwards to your next video you got a subscriber..
I’ve always wanted one of the SS454s since they came out with em but I was in the military at the time and they were out of my pay grade at the time and by time I got out and making good money, they weren’t in production anymore. Still hoping I can find one around one day but sure wish I coulda had a new one tho
This is exactly what I’m doing now I got all the body work just about done . Starting with no experience I can say I have patience to do this . After my truck is done I have my dads I want to do as well so maybe that’ll help me get my feet wet . Thanks for the video bro definitely a confidence booster for people like me wanting to start 💯
Great job. I am looking at painting my truck. I think we maybe around the corner. I recognize the gas station you stopped at in the part 2 video (Dixie Farm). Like the Texas Tech sign as well...✌️👆
eveything looks good man.... 2 big things to help you in your future... as you stated ... body filler is extremly porous...you should never ...ever apply filler to bare metal.. when you washed that truck .. the water can cause corrosion on the raw metal under the filler giving you problems in the future.... also I am gonna assume you applied a 2K primer on the truck over the bare metal... another big no no.. for the best long term paint job... epoxy prime all bare metal ... you will have a much better result.... keep up the good work ... 🤘
Funny thing is that back in the 70s & 80s we all were taught to strip the area down to bare metal and then do our mud work on the bare metal. There’s still a lot of cars running around and sitting in garages today with 80s paint jobs on them that still look decent today and there’s a lot more that have been crushed, mostly due to improper or lack of care and preventative maintenance, not whether filler was done on top of bare metal or epoxy. With the progression of time tho comes the change in materials we use. Back in the day we weren’t using epoxies for anything other than topcoats which was few and far between cause the stuff was expensive (Imron, it was a polyurethane enamel I believe and it was mainly used for semi-trucks & aircraft) almost all primer was lacquer primer back then and it did the job if you used it correctly but times have changed today. I guess the point I’m making here is that even tho I agree with you completely as far as spraying the truck in a good couple coats of epoxy before you do your mud work, if there’s one or two little spots that you need to work and break thru to the metal, don’t worry about it. Do your mud work and then prime & block then top coat and chances are extremely high that the repair will still outlive the useful life of the vehicle in todays times but if your doing a complete new respray, then go ahead and sand it down first, then spray the complete body in 2-3 good, wet coats of epoxy and then proceed to do your mud work on top of the epoxy for the best longevity. Try and get your primer coat as smooth as possible tho to cause it’s a bitch to sand if you get runs or orange peel. Anyways, sorry this got long, carry on brother!!
@@1982MCI a lot has changed since then... body shop classes were teaching to repair rust with fiber glass over metal.... 🤦♂️.. we now see how that works 🤣🤣🤣 time shows that these practices are not correct...
3m says on their website it's preferred to apply direct to metal. Also, a guy on TH-cam, can't remember his channel, did an adhesion test with bare metal vs over primer/paint with bondo as well, both were great.
@JaRuuizz 3m has had tons of issues with there platinum filler... adhesion is not the issue.. it's the corrosion that forms between filler and bare metal do to how porous the filler is. There are multiple people who have proven over the years that it is not good to apply over bare metal.
Brother, I'm so glad I found your channel! This is the style of video I've been searching for a long time. Are you on the east coast? I have 2 old school Impalas I wanted painted
Thanks for the follow bro!! Love to hear your starting the journey. You got this. One tip I would give you is to make sure you read the tds for every product you use. I made the mistake of following general steps online but every paint product has a specific tds and it shows you exactly how to use it. Tds stands for technical data sheet. You can Google this for any product. I hope this helps and good luck!!
Materials + indirect expenses + direct expenses + hourly charge + (insurance once you expand to make it into a business) x.70% (with the .70 it’ll give you a 30 percent profit on your overall job) and always have a minimum charge bro whether it takes you 5 minutes or and hour don’t shoot yourself on the foot. I run a small construction company and that’s the formula I use to make a living. Overall you did a good job bro I’m currently working on a 98 blazer that I’m bring in back to life. I’ve had that thing for almost 15 years.
What’s up bro. After I finished all of the body/filler work, I got a da sander and used 220 grit on the entire truck. That’s a good grit for high build primer.
You can sand the original paint down until you get to a good layer of paint. If you have any rust, I would sand just that area down to the metal. Hope this helps!
Good evening, are you taking on more jobs? If so, I've got an Evo 8 and wanting to rock "cosmic orange." Hope this message finds you well bud, take care.
What’s up bro! Thanks for watching. So primer is okay to shoot in the open because if you get debris in it while painting, you can sand it out. Your going to sand the entire truck after this step so it’s okay. Hope this helps and good luck!
Your honesty and dedication is obvious. You are teaching others to start

Another good tip when sanding flat panels is to take a pencil and mark over the filler. When you sand after marking it will reveal any high spots.

Actually really like the music and camera work here,
So you do the bodywork with 180 grit then sand the entire truck with 220 grit right and after it’s ready for primer?
Depends on your tds. I use 220 personally because that’s what my primer calls for
Another question why do you use the block with 180 grit for sanding can you use the da too? Or do you use the block for sanding bondo only?
The block is your best bet. I seen pros use the da but I’m no pro.
Bro you have Skills 👍 you only going to get better. 💯

I was told that it’s not good to bondo over painted area because of future bonding issues?
You sand it before applying the bondo so that it can properly adhere. You don't just put bondo over unsanded paint but that's not what he did here
That paint mixer looks like it probably paid for itself on the first job
Your close to Houston. Paint my truck! Please
Conmadre!!!
Hey man, I have a question. Why didn’t you close off your paint booth? Wouldn’t that cause dirt and debris to get in there with the wind?
You don’t have to close the booth when shooting primer. If you get dirt or debris in it, you will eventually sand it out in the next step.
What’s up bro! Thanks for watching. So primer is okay to shoot in the open because if you get debris in it while painting, you can sand it out. Your going to sand the entire truck after this step so it’s okay. Hope this helps and good luck!
