    Ive been a bricklayer for 30 years, I don’t think theres a right or wrong way to lay bricks , as long as you find a technique that suits you and the end result is neat. Interesting video anyway 👍

    Hi Charlie I’m a retired brickie wish I’d known about this method when I was younger. It’s certainly a lot faster than old traditional method. Well done for putting it out for other brickies to learn or decide which method they prefer. I know which one I’d use. Cheers well done.

    You made that pick and dip look smooth. I can lay brick faster spreading the mud first. The pick and dip is awkward to me. Then again, I have been doing it the normal way for 26 years. I also use an 11" trowel (London pattern)and my wrist never gets sore. My technique puts little strain on my wrist. I don't roll my mortar, I cut a sliver out of the pile on the board with the back of my trowel, scoop it and swing in to the wall and spread it. I try to always look for ways to do things that make it easier on my body as well. Cool video.

    Pick and dip, used to be called the “pull on” method years ago and we would always use this method when building jack walls in 9 or 13.5 brickwork. Great stuff mate

    Dyou know what Charlie your the first person I’ve seen explain and show the difference in long spread or pick and dip , I’ve heard about this method but the man who taught me used the traditional method so that’s what I’ve stuck with for 15 years , however I’m gonna give this pick and dip a go as I think it looks more fluid and easier. I’d imagine it’s gonna be hard to change my style but I’m gonna give it a go 👍🏻

    I have an interesting comment to throw into the mix. Me and my mate have been laying for 25 years each, we have worked together for 5 years, he uses the pick and dip method with small trowel and is efficient at it, I use the traditional method with an 11 inch trowel efficiently. Now he would be the first to admit that on average I get down more, only slightly but more all the same. I put it down to being ultra efficient using the least amount of movement as possible to get the wall up. Must add there is no difference in the cleanness between us.
    So to end my comment isn’t a exact science just a observation that I thought would fit this upload.
    Keep up the good work mucker👍

      Nes Storms I can do both as fast as each other if I want to... I find it much more stress on my body though doing traditional method. Pic and dip is just a more relaxed easy method for me personally. But each to there own what ever makes you happy 👌🏼

    Saw this method 30 years ago in Germany used with a square trowel and the mud is taken from large open buckets easy to keep clean and you can move them about when half full all the facework was raked out so full perps wasn't really needed because a team of jointers came and pointed up the whole house in about 2 days !!

    Little tip charlie. When u scrape the muck off the freshly laid brick, don't throw it back on the board. Use it to perp the next brick. This way u combine the english with the continental system, and it is as fast.

    Depends on the muck and brick. We lay mostly dry cored 3x10 bricks in Canada, long spreads on cool damp days, Pick and dip when it’s warm and the mud is shite. Bricklaying is about adapting and producing the most in a certain situation .
    I’ve gotten other guys on shorter spreads years ago because I hate hearing hammers banging on fresh bricks, but most brick layers suck and don’t care to produce.

    Pick N Dip is also used in the United States a lot. I've used both methods and both methods are quite popular here depending on what part of the country your in. It also depends on what your building and the type of brick. I do a lot of chimney work so it's a bit different than laying on a wall but I'm in the northeast part of the country in Massachusetts aka New England. Here the union brickys are taught the pick n dip method in school. It's definitely more efficient and way less trips back and fourth to the bricks n boards And it's also easier on the wrists with the smaller trowels. One trip equals 1 brick. Grab mud and brick at the same time and stay in the same spot. Your not back and fourth taking multiple trips running up and down the wall that being said I've seen masons do both really well and I can do both fast but the so called 'traditional method" takes a lot more energy and I have to hustle more to get the same amount of out put. . Also, dry brick is way easier to lay with this method. The weather here is radical from 0 degrees Fahrenheit in winter to 100. Degrees Fahrenheit i the summer. So pick n dip is much more useful on those hot days when spreading mud. Just the other day it was only a few degrees above freezing ( 37'F )when I left for work at 5:30 am and at lunch it was 80 degrees Fahrenheit and we were sweating our butts off and getting sunburned with our shirts off lol

    Bricky I served my time with did something similar. When he got his next brick he would butter the end of it before taking a trowel of mud, spread the trowel and then lay the brick. Had a full perp each time and he only went to the spot board once per brick. I could match him on speed or better him by one brick spreading a different way to traditional but I would effectively use more energy. This way of laying in the video is great because your body is going to last a lot longer, have less aches and pains at the end of the day. Cheers 👍

    Good, worthwhile experiment. Especially with that kind of brick (with the frog up, or that scooped-out top of brick.? whatever you Brits call it?), the dip and sip works clearly better than traditional. And I think it most likely works better with the traditional 3-hole brick used in America, 'working at an average pace'. But for breaking speed records, got to do it the traditional way, Fast.. That's how the world record was set in 1987 or 1988 it was, in Michigan.? There's TH-cam videos of it.. But very good experiment.

    • @R16CKX
      @R16CKX 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mate, they keep changing their minds over frog up or frog down. In the NW of the UK it was changed to frog down because they reckoned that the wetter colder weather was holding in the bricks easier and causing more problems and damage!

    As a comment below, seen this in Germany in the early 90's. 3 polish guys versed us Brits. We were all using traditional method, they used this pic and dip method. Absolutley smasehed us all of us in our early 20's at the time. However I never got to grips with it, I still have to perp a brick. Old dogs and new tricks n'ole dogs and all that.

  • @highgatehandyman6479
    @highgatehandyman6479 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Liking the technique. Cant see much reason to knock it.
    I would say however, that if were building my own house, I would butter every brick with a few scrapes of the trowel. Especially on stocks. Just for piece of mind re bonding adhesion. If were tiling a kitchen splash back, I would spread the wall and stick the tiles on directly. But if tiling a shower floor, I would back butter each tile. Butter the floor then spread the mortar to guarantee maximum coverage and adhesion. But I do see this fast and easy laying style as smart system for saving time on certain viable bricks. And for certain situations. Great videos btw.

I’ll try that on the next house I brick. The method I use is similar but different. I kinda combines the two. I do it for speed reasons as it is only myself and a helper and I try to get 2000 in the wall a day that way. Love the fact that you show that the head joint gets 80 percent full with the pic n dip and the other 20 is filled with the next course of mud. Loved the video. Keep up the good work and looking forward to more in the future!

    Great video .. in Denmark we only do pick n dip. Most people do it reverse though, and the trowel is more ergonomic. It is designed so that the balance is better with mug on, and it dosn’t put so much strain on your wrist. Look up the word “Opmurering” and you will see what i mean. Thank you for posting .. oh and another thing In my mind it’s crazy that there hasn’t been invented any helping aids, machinery etc. that feeds you the brick or spreads the mortar. Food for thought .. why not seperate the spreading mortar part from the actually brick work part... the bricky is the skilled and costly labour, he should only lay bricks wihout turning or putting mortar on .. It would be great to see this theori tested
    Thanks again

    Great video Charlie and a lot of lessons to be learned by everyone. Just a thought, when you are working 'forwards' I noticed that instead of buttering the end of the brick furthest away, you twisted your wrist and buttered the end of the brick closest to you. Do you think that you could be straining your wrist in the future? Maybe a few hundred thousand times doing that motion, could lead to a repetitive strain injury. Sorry to sound like I'm nagging, but as a 6ft 19st bloke pushing fifty with a dodgy back, I don't want to see a first class builder have problems. All the best mate.

    I’m an English bricky that lives in Norway. Pick and dip must be used here. Regulations are against spreading more than one brick at time due to mud drying out and you can’t furrow either because they will be voids. It is paramount here that you put your joint on the brick though to ensure full perps. It’s obviously more effective to do it you way but you could see they were holes all over your wall before you jointed.

    I can see that you personally like “pic n dip” or prefer it to long bed👍🏻, in South Africa i prefer long bed (but not that long), weather does not permit it basically....mix will to dry by the time you get to the sixth brick and to heavy on the shoulder at +13 coarses

  • @demoe5676

    This is the way the Dutch are doing it. Also, they use a round shape trowel and scrape the mortar back 10 mm whereas a grouter comes to finish it of with a (lime-sand) mix hence the brick will last longer period and face of the brick will survive the frost in winters

    It's no doubt you lay a good brick both ways. You're a skilled bricky.
    I only expressed a concern in a previous video that brought a lot of attention that there's a ton of mud coming out the back of the bed that cannot be cleaned out on cavity veneer walls; leaving it there to soak up water or fall behind the wall potentially blocking weepers. You explained shortly after that you can angle the brick to minimize this potential hazard of mud coming out the bed. In this particular example you are easily able to clean the back of the wall which is no problem at all. I just happen to see a potential flaw with that the "pick and dip method" when it comes to cavity veneer walls in particular.
    I've never tried this style personally. but am going to give a try. I'm sure it's a fine method if many parts of the world do it and continute to do so. No hate mate, was just voicing what's noticeable. Keep up the vids. Perhaps doing a video on the trick of angling the brick to minimize the mud out the back without having tilted out of plumb bricks would be a goody. Cheers.

      @@KevinColt you are quite right, and i entirely agree, life moves on and professions change. But somebody who dives a car does NOT call himself a 'horse-rider, So if all you can do is stick up profiles and run in, call yourself a semi-skilled laborer, and not a 'bricklayer'. as you saying that trade no longer exists. .

    • @tonyjones7372
      @tonyjones7372 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      and as somebody (retired bricklayer also) said to me yesterday, after I had replied: A co-pilot is called a 'co-pilot' because he cannot yet take off and land, he can only do the easy bit in the middle. Charlie, my original comment was only an observation from a retired bricklayer, but as kevin's reply seem to imply I was 'stupid' for being able to build a corner faster than it takes to put up a profile, I thought he should be informed that I am quite aware the world moves on.

  • @gromkiller7611

    My opinion is that the pick n dip would create more opportunities for holes if not done correctly. Also untill the pick n dip is mastered I believe alot of mud would be wasted , but to each his own . No right or wrong way to lay brick as long as the end result is plumb and true

People can stick to their old ways but this will be classed as "traditional" in the rest of Europe and works well for them! Also I've found some box section gauged profiles, would u recommend them?
