Best advice ever as regards the trowel size,I was in the trade over 20 years from 1977-1999 , mostly subbing with my brother who's older than me, I was the typical show off with the biggest trowel ,we also did rendering and pinking and I'd use a oversize hawk, now I've got tennis elbow in my right arm golfers elbow in my left and 2 knackered discs in my back ,and my brother who always used a small trowel is still in the trade and laying bricks, great vid mate, good luck

    • @michaelhall8993

Charlie Collison just a quick one how do you stop too much mortar falling down the cavity or is this just something you get used too the more you do this way

    • @CharlieCollison
      @CharlieCollison  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Michael Hall you lay it slightly different then the traditional way. You press the back down and roll the brick to the front which pushes most of the mortar out the front. Keep at it it takes a while to get it perfect your basically spreading the muck with the brick rather then the trowel so getting the amount of muck depending on what brick your laying is key.

Like you said it's all got to do with what your building as to how much you should be laying, 1800 laid, home eating dinner by 3pm not to shabby at all, it's your technique that suits a small trowel but I am still trying to pick it up as keep reverting when I am in the zone to long bed laying, good stuff Charlie right up there with your skillset👍

I started as a 15 year old Hod Carrier, six months was enough for me, putting out spots for muck along with the constant moving of spots, feeding the mixer, up and down ladders, the occasional hoist, pull the rope and the barrow went, then run up the the ladder to wheel the muck to the old boys from the hoist, so many memories, hard English blokes and even harder laboring Irishmen.
In the 60's we also did our own scaffolding. I was in a gang of 6 and always on price besides some fellas being on the lump. Old days... a great way to get a quid but bloody hard work.
So glad to see your video as to how things have changed from my time some 53 years ago

In my opinion if you tip up to work and just get stuck in or arse up head down so to speak then the quants soon mount up , I have said for years that you can have 10 trowels on a job and everyone does things different but the end result is the same !! I prefer not to profile corners and then go back to them , I profile all corners and start the back elevation first , racking out the gables 11 or 12 bricks , yes you’re forever lifting corner blocks but back goes up in 1 same with front thus leaving 2 gables of mass that have corners built !! Each to there own . Ps I also have a small trowel as it stops it getting nicked from the cabin when moneys in !!

I laboured for first two years and have now built for 20 years brick block but mainly stone. Labouring for two brickys was harder work imo. Keeping mortor(muck) right is the most difficult thing when building bricks or blocks. Winter sand is wet so little water more mortisezer. Summer its drier sand so more water less mortisezer. Too wet, blocks sink. Too stiff morter doesnt spread and wrist over 8 hours on a footing can get sore. A good bricky is only as good as his labourer.

Laying a brick every 28 seconds would get you 1000 bricks laid over 8 hours. (obviously in ideal conditions but the max in principal) I've watched you drop them in at less than 5 second intervals so at that rate you could lay 1,000 in 1 hour 23 minutes. If you had got the contract to build trumpfs wall you'd be a billionaire in not very long at all.

All depends on your setup really, if you have a good labourer loading out for the next day and not doing it in the morning and the runs you got. If your man to man on a box you should easy do a thou a day for four days of the week or the equivalent in block-work with one day left for sils ,lintels, scaffold lift and general bullshit we gotta put up with. I use my smaller trowel for cornering up and my 12’ to run it in.

Yeah, bad weather, too hot, too cold. Exactly different designs. Do you put washing up liq in your mix, muck
? Brickies are one of the hardest working trades on site. How many blocks do you lay a day. I miss working in construction !
Insulation ? Or are they thermal blocks ? O yeah I see the insulation. Brick ties. 👍 nice and tidy on your scaffolding ? And you have kept your hard hat on all day. 🤣
    👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤣🤣👍🤣💚🇬🇧

Martin I find them a lot more comfortable than the Marshall town trowels and totally agree with Charlie on the size of the trowel..also they last longer

Hey Charlie, I find you can get a decent run with a Marshalltown 19 / 12 up to hip high and then switch to a worn down same without suffering from any fatigue. That way the bigger trowel wears down to a point where it becomes the smaller one and keep replacing so on and so on. I'm surprised you're not using a profile called Blakes Profiles. I used them with great success when I was in the UK. Not sure whether you have heard about them but it might be worth a check. The above trowel info works for me ....37 yr vet . Great video and keep banging in the rocks :)

Totally agree about the trowel dude as a victim of the dreaded Tennis Elbow ...One thing for sure if you do get it you will be laying zero per day so good to see you are using your brain .

I think you must be confused John ! Are you sure you wasn’t picking potatoes with the hardest Irish gang ...you know 200 spuds per hour ....Give up ! every one who has ever worked in the game have spread the furthest, carried 80 brick in a hod, Laid over 1000 bricks a day , balanced 2 no 9” blocks on their head whilst singing swing low sweet chariot 😳Bla bla bla ....Boring.

John Bowkett The skill of bricklaying (A race)? You must be a millionaire by now John ,just think of all those bricks and blocks you have put down at record speeds and most before premix and telescopic loaders ! Did you work 3 x1 ....Three hods and speedy John. You must be a legend . The builders Ronnie Pickering .
