I'm having a really hard time with my watercolor paper! I've tried so many different brands, but they all warp and peel. Am I pressing too hard on the paper with my brush, or adding too much water? Send help! MEDIC! I'VE WATERBOARDED MY PAINTING!

For me, it looks great when the painting's still not finished but when it's done it looks terrible
Ugh I'm so frustrated. I cannot for the life of my get it to look like this at ALL! It's like my watercolor paper is just sucking up the water so fast no matter how much water I put on so despite working fast, I cant get the colors to blend because its drying so fast!

When you start doing the 2nd layer you add water, so does the first layer's paint does not mess up. How !?

You will see different stages of the painting throughout the painting process so feel free to pick one that you like the best! I wanted to have it rather dark than too light, so it's really up to you what you like! :)

Mako, can I still try this painting if I don’t have black watercolor? Can you mix other colors to get black?
Yes! You can just use a very dark blue or mix black by mixing 3 primaries. But I would be careful with that!

Makko Thankyou so much for showing me how to do the northern lights/aurora borealis pic but I still don’t know how to get a snowscape down below still a lake but a look of snow on the ground using opaque white looks too unrealistic for me is there any other way to get that look? You can use masking fluid or tape to cover up the area so you can paint around it without losing the white space!

I have one suggestion: you can use something (maybe paper) to cover the lower part of your drawing (everything except the sky) so that the paint you use for the stars doesn't fall anywhere else :) Btw, I really love the way you use tape for border. It makes everything soooooooo much more beautiful 💖

hi! i was wondering as to what watercolor i should get. Im only a starting beginner and im planning on getting white nights and putting them in a palette, but im not sure whether i should buy white nights + a palette combo or should i get a W&N Cotman? an answer would be very appreciated!
It depends on the price I guess! I would get the W&N cotman set with a few colors and the mixing palette as it's relatively cheap where I live and the colors are pretty transparent too!
@@Makoccino Thanks for the reply! I guess ill buy the white nights as they are about the same price (30 dollars for w&n and also the 12 tubes white nights) Ill just buy a pallette to store the paints which will cost me a bit more but i think its worth the investment.

I found it really helpful especially the things that you have mentioned about the struggles in painting. Just like in your other video. I'm a beginner at watercolor painting and sometimes feel bad at myself for not painting good enough as others. But I understood it much better since you have talked about the same experiences. 😊

I tried to do this twice. My paint wouldn’t blend like yours did and the paper dried too quickly. The more paint I added while the paper was wet would just take off the paint that I had already put down.
Could be a number of things. Sometimes certain watercolors have more filler and don't blend as easy. Could be the brush isn't holding enough water, either due to its size, or the type of bristles. Having a good quality of watercolor paper can also help, because it's better made to hold the water. Once the paper starts to dry you have to let it dry completely and give it another layer because the paint is at a different stage in it's dry time at that point, better to wait and add another layer, than risk reactivating the partially dry paint and lifting it back up. Keep trying! Don't give up. 😁

I love watercolors, because on start it look total terrible, but in end is it a master pice!
I am a beginner, but when I was just a beginning beginner, I did several bird pictures (or partials). I got discouraged and tossed them before finishing. Finally, I decided to finish one even if it stunk. When I did the eye (last because it was darkest) my painting transformed. It was so surprising.
When I don't like where a painting is going (happens a lot) I remind myself of how this medium transforms near the end of the work. I make sure to finish before deciding to toss things out.
Everytime, I need to get the idea from here only...I am really so fond of it!!
Amazing video and I love the the northern light painting. The transition from one color to another was really smooth and a treat to watch. Video covering small details like a painting can look bit odd than end result in early phases and people should not give up was a bonus besides all the information shared on northern lights painting itself. With all honesty the bookmarks were fabulous but the painting as whole was so amazing that I might have not cut it into pieces as it was so amazing. Another great video in terms of information and art quality which is going to be very helpful in laying foundation for upcoming artists in future. Keep up the great work Mako :D
