Our interview guest on the Episode 28 of the Fruity Knitting Podcast is Monique Boonstra, better known as A Passion for Lace. Monique shares the story of how she came to specialize in lace knitting, and shows us the stunning work that she has produced. On Knitters of the World we meet Anneli from Hamburg, Germany. She shares her creations which have come from many years of modifying patterns to suit her own tastes and preferences. There’s also a tutorial looking at shaping while staying in pattern.

Dear Andrea and Andrew, hi from Hungary! I found your podcast when I searched through the TH-cam for something Shetland Lace related, and funny, but I found other lace/Shetland Lace related episodes first. I've got obsessed with Fruity Knitting really fast. Your podcast is such high quality, I really respect the effort you bring into this very fun, informative, useful and teaching work of yours. Thank you, I've learned so much from you by far! I enjoy the long iterviews, and Andrea's advanced advices. Your passion for knitting and yarns comes through the screen. This episode was the dearest to my heart's interest! I'm eagerly waiting for watching other episodes from the past and the future too!

Thank you for another wonderful episode. And thank you for having Monique as your knitter of the world. I have had the privilege of meeting Monique through Ravelry and email, and now to see her in person was incredible. She is a true artist of lace - a genius - and a talented and generous person. Thank you so much.

I met Monique in Shetland! We were on a tour of Unst and Yell together and while I didn't get to take her workshop, I did see her amazing work at Jamieson and Smith, she is a treasure indeed. I love our small but deep knitting world.

HI Andrea and Andrew, it's Valeria from Italy.
I would like to express my deep gratitude to you both for the effort and passion you share in your podcast.
I discovered you by chance, but by now I can easily count a fourthnight out of your previous issue, you made my calendar rythm.
Soon as I can, I'll join you as a patron.
    Please, just keep going.

I also wrote on your web page, but realize all the action seems to be here!
I wanted to mention that I love the 7 UP! series, and have seen all of them since I discovered them in college (when they were up to about 28 or so). But I wouldn't worry about your speed of knitting, Andrew--you seem to be doing a great job for a beginner.

Hi Tamara. Andrew here. I am satisfied with my speed at the moment - although the shawl does have some long rows right now.
Just regarding the comments - putting comments on the website also helps, so feel free to continue! It is funny having so many different ways to communicate...

I really enjoyed watching your conversation with Monique Boonstra. I finally saw someone knit the way I do too. Stitches close to the tips of the needles and very small movements of the hands. And the right needle fixed between the arm and the body. Thank you for this episode.

One shawl is more beautiful than the other. Monique is an artist. Best of all, you can find her patterns for these beauties on Ravelry. I've already knitted a few shawls according to her instructions and I had and still have a lot of fun with them. 😍

This has been such an inspiring episode for me! I have always loved lace, having had success with self-taught Estonian by using Nancy Bush's book. I accidentally bought an entire cone of cobweb Shetland lace a few years ago and have been attempting to learn from Sharon Miller's Heirloom Knitting book. I've become slightly exasperated...starting, ripping, re-starting, ripping. I learned to knit the Continental way, so I purchased a knitting belt a few months ago and have been retraining myself to knit English as that is how I have seen the lovely lace knitters work in the few videos I find online. I have to chuckle because I also ride a motorcycle....and as you can see my name is Monica!! Now if I could only get Monique to come to the Seattle area to teach. :) Thank you for your programs Andrew and Andrea!

I agree with Andrew. That Very Easy Vogue pattern is not very easy, Andrea did a great job because she is very good with details. Too bad it's too big, but the sewing turned out fabulous.
    I love Annalie's beautiful sweaters.
Monique's personality is so interesting, She might seem like a quiet little knitter, but then she jumps on her motor bike and takes to the road! I don't think I can ever achieve her level of lace knitting, but it has inspired me to try again on my lace tunic.
There seem to be more lace knitters these days, so maybe if I photograph where I stopped, I can find someone who can tell me what has me stumped.
    Thanks for another amazing episode!

I have a large appreciation for that interview with Monique. Many thanks for that.
    Two things:
First, just before the lockdown, I was given seven full hanks of Icelandic flax to do something with - and, as fate would allow, they were all tangled! It took so lonnnnng setting them correct, and proudly only about half a meter lay in waste! I’ve tried many techniques to figure how to work with it, originally thinking only weaving would work, but some knitting is starting to look good.
Second, I’ve worked in 2mm for over 10 yrs as my favourite needles. I finally found beading needles long enough to hold, but, THEY ARE IMPOSSIBLY THIN! There are 5 in the packet, and so thin that all held together are thinner than a mechanical pencil lead. Add to it, that all I had to test with was sewing thread, which has no give. My attempt failed and I haven’t yet gotten back to it.
Watching the interview provided here, I am quiet tempted to give it another 400 tries!!!
Wish me luck with BOTH the hyper-thin needles for one project, AND, the figuring-out what to do with the rough flax as another project.

And Andrea, as always I appreciate your insights into knitting and now sewing! I think your confidence while explaining that problems CAN be worked out if you just look closely and thoughtfully at what the end product should be is extremely helpful.
I haven't watched the interview, but your Knitter of the World (as all of them are) is also quite inspirational--and stylish! Thanks again for another amazing podcast. (It seems I have to cut my comment in two!)

Hi Tamara. Andrew here. That is an interesting comment about the tutorial. I think Andrea has the idea that if you master a new skill, it opens up the world a little more and you can do more interesting and exciting things, and, as you say, that these are skills that can be learnt. Thanks for writing! Andrew.

Love your podcast, your knitting knowledge is impressive and I thank you for sharing. Regarding your sewing, I found it funny that your knowledge about choosing the right yarn for the knitted garment did not cross over to choosing the right fabric for the sewn garment. LOL! I will have to check out the Utube tutorial you referred to. The ideal thing the experts ( I am not one ) say to do is to make a "sloper" and use that for the pattern. I have a couple Craftsy classes on that, I would like to branch out into more garment sewing. Right now, I quilt, make purses and started knitting a few years ago. You have inspired me to try fair isle. Love watching you both.

Such good information on maintaining cables/pattern. Andrea, as you find your "perfect" princess bodice or whatever portion, keep a master pattern for it. You can duplicate the pieces in parchment paper, mark what it is on the outside of a LARGE plastic bag, and then keep those pieces for future. Eventually you will have pattern basics which are custom for you and you can construct what styles you want.

Hello, I only watch your podcast occasionally until now, but I think I have to watch you more! I so enjoyed this episode, also I think because I am not only a knitter but also sews! Also I am (I think) in a similar situation as you. I am swedish but I live in Vienna, Austria since 15 almost 16 years:) Now as my children are growing up - my youngest is actually about to do his Matura, which is the same thing as Abitur, here in Austria - I will have even more time for my crafts I hope!

Hi Karin. I think the demands on the kids here is very high - we will all be incredibly relieved once it is over. I can imagine it is similar in Austria. And even after living here for a long time, the system is still foreign to us, which makes it just a little bit harder. But it's all good really, and Madeleine is doing fine. So Butterwick, McCall, Kwik, and VOgue all belong under the McCall umbrella.
Now I disagree with choosing the smaller of two sizes because if you have a larger bust or larger some other measurements its easier to take the clothes in than to realize you cut out too literal material. The important thing is to try on your garment while making it so if you made just the front of the bodice you hold it to you to see if the seams are where they are suppose to be and if they aren't take it in. The other thing is to make a muslin and pin the seams but not sew it and make adjustments as needed so you have a cloth version of a pattern with adjustments

The Lacework by Monique is exquisite, wish I could knit shawls, but I have a friend on Ise of Wight, Christine R who I commission to knit shawls for my friends. Her work is also exquisite. Perhaps you'd like to see her work, on Wrapped in Colour website. Christine is on Ravelry as well. I really enjoyed your Podcast its a pity its over so quickly. i am always glued to every word. I know you like knitting garments, so do I, there is something really satisfying finishing a garment and actually wearing it or selling my work. I love Fair Isle colourwork its such a challenge. Anyway I hope your arms get better soon so you can continue knitting your really beautiful garments.

The yarn on the cone is a 1ply.
I think it is worsit spun.
Most of the time I spin single plies myself. I need more practice for a 2 ply. I did manage to spin 711m 2ply with 50gr BFL last January.

As always, such a joy to watch you both. Sorry you are still unable to knit, Andrea. There is a book that is currently a pre sale called Ergo I Knit, that address how to avoid stress injuries while knitting. It's kind of pricey but may have invaluable information. www.ergoiknit.com/knitting-comfortably/

What a treat to hear this podcast. It is really humbling to listen to your guests (both excellent). I do think that Monique is something of a knitting savant. I'd love to crawl inside her brain! And of course, Andrea and Andrew are so interesting in all that they say.I used to teach pattern design at SF State University and another college - both flat pattern design and French draping techniques. With flat pattern design, the first thing we do is to create what is called a "sloper" which is a very fitted muslin garment something like this:www.bing.com/images/search?q=butterick+pattern+suitable+of+sloper&qpvt=butterick+pattern+suitable+of+sloper&qpvt=butterick+pattern+suitable+of+sloper&qpvt=butterick+pattern+suitable+of+sloper&FORM=IGREOnce the fit is perfected, you cut the muslin garment apart and transfer the pieces to cardboard. After that, you really don't need to use commercial patterns if you know how to manipulate your sloper pieces. We do the same thing for pants. Andrea your tips for measuring for commercial patterns are right on point. BTW, I love your latest sewing projects. Hard to believe that you can wiggle into that first one without a zipper. Both dresses are lovely in print and style. You look so pretty in all your podcasts. Andrew is adorable too.Hugs from Kimmy

Thanks Kimmy, what you say about a 'sloper' is very interesting.

I've never heard the term "sloper" before, but it may be similar to what my mum called "blocks". She trained as a dressmaker and pattern cutter in Melbourne in the 1930s. She kept a bag full of heavy brown paper pattern "blocks" for all sorts of standard pattern types - bodices, collars, sleeves etc in several sizes which she used as the basis for drafting her own patterns for herself or her clients. For really special jobs she would cut out a full size calico garment, fit that on the client and then cut the actual fabric. Some fabrics are so precious you can't make a single alteration or the stitching marks will show. I so wish I'd learned more from her, but I didn't have much interest.
