    I thank you so much, I did order those belts off eBay and man were they shtt. My main complaint was that I was missing the right channel. I'm glad to see that it reappeared during your repair. It must've been a loose connection somewhere. I first thought it was something serious like an IC chip replacement. I trust your work more than myself, I'm good at reading schematics and repairing electronics but I just didn't have the time to repair this "cheap" 1984 cassette deck. It is beloved to me. I thank you very much for getting it running right

    Thanks for the video. I had a chance to repair a sharp vz3000 and a set of 3 original belts cost 60+ pounds plus shipping to the CIS. Cheap belts were not considered initially, so as not to disassemble a heavy device 5 times.

      I keep belts from every machine I scrap because real rubber belts will last forever. The eBay crap out there these days are terrible. Only good enough for demos or to get something going for someone that only wants it functional so they can flog it to someone else on eBay and wants to spend as little as possible and doesn't want to order in a belt that could end up costing 30.00 by the time it arrives. I have a regular customer that doesn't care how bad it sounds he just wants it fixed and he wants it fixed dirt cheap so that he can flog it. You have to remember that a lot of these old tape decks unless they are real high don't go for much. I have a regular customer that will show up and hand me a tape deck and say you can fix it for 40 bucks do it otherwise keep it. On those decks I'll put one of those thin belts as a demo video and usually get 40 bucks for it and he'll turn around and sell it for 50 or 60 and let the next person worry about the high flutter.

      @@12voltvids I've actually found one or two reliable ebay sellers for belts both flat and square and i've used them for numerous restorations. Reasonably priced and only a few dollars shipping no matter how many you order. They sell the belts as a single piece (not a cheap belt kit) and each belt package has the actual specs right on it......length, width, thickness for flat belts and length and cross section for square belts. . The belts are high quality in that they are not stretchy like the cheap belts which behave more like rubber bands. A lot of people don't realize that the elasticity of the belt is just as important as the correct size. Too stretchy and you'll get speed variations just as bad if not worse than an incorrectly sized belt as in this video.

    How long did it take for you to get to the point where you could adapt your skills to everything when you were hired for your first job? I ask because to someone like me alot of the machines are the same but can either have one part taken off to get at where the broken part is or like this you basically had to take to bits to get at it. I guess after a while there's only a few different ways that something comes apart. I remember seeing alot of these models when I was younger but most things all looked different unlike today where everything looks the same and has a touchscreen and a few bga chips and small surface mount chips that are completely unservicable without a 4000 dollar stereoscopic microscope and a decent flir camera to find a short amongst the aformentioned homogeneousness if you want to be on your level of technical proficiency with our modern, throwaway manufacturing process. Sorry for rambling.

    Nice work, especially the tape azimuth using the scope. Did you end up demagnetizing the head?.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Remember this is a 2 head deck. By putting into record the AC bias signal will demagnetize the head as soon as it goes into record. Only 3 head decks this is necessary for the play head and playback only machines. People think that the playback head becomes magnetized from the tape passing over it but that's not true because the signal recorded on the tape is alternating between polarity North and South so as the tape plays that alternating magnetic field will keep the head itself relatively neutral. What causes the heads to become magnetically charged is either people poking magnetically charged instruments near the head such as magnetized screwdrivers or believe it or not the Earth's magnetic field. The Earth's magnetic field is the number one contributor to heads slowly becoming magnetically charged and there's nothing you can do to stop it other than use your demagnetizing tool from time to time on the playback heads. Again the record heads and the erase head all you need to do is put the machine in record for a couple seconds and the heads are completely neutralized.

I know; not the best brand or even their best model, but the ONLY problem I've had with it is that after having it about a year or two I had to make a speed adjustment on the motor which was easier than I expected & it won't rewind a tape. But I'm perfectly fine with the rewind function not working as long as everything else works as it should. & it does sound pretty good.

    Yeah, bulk belts from eBay and Amazon can be hit and miss. I bought such belts for a couple of shelf system tape decks I've gotten up and running for my own use. I had to try different belts until I found some of the proper length that also would run smoothly to help ensure the capstan would run with minimum wow and flutter and at the right speed. I was lucky enough to find them, but ... ugh ... there were several belts that were totally useless because their cut was so rough.

    Hi everyone, I have a Technics RS-B58R that has auto reverse. Bought it in need of an overhaul and fixed all mechanisms from using parts from a junked RS-B57R. Took the entire thing apart and found what needed to be replaced as components of the mechanism were damaged and missing also. I got auto reverse working, ff and rewind and play mechanism but tape will not play due to capstan motor always running in reverse direction so that whatever tape is inside it will only play B side. I replaced motor which did nothing and I think it there is something wrong with circuit that powers motor to go forward, stop and reverse.
    Again: Everything works and everything I know of is up to date on maintenance (gear lubricant, belts, motors, swapped capstans, pinch rollers) but when powered on Capstan motor starts moving and runs reverse even when play is not engaged. I replaced motor and still same problem and now cannot figure out what is wrong.

I was the only one certified. the other guys could do minor things like change belts ECT but if it came to troubleshooting the circuit then they sent it to my bench I would fix the problem and send it back to them to reassemble. Actually that did that for the TV's and VCRs too. Take them apart I would fix and move on. I hated cassette decks, turntables and portable audio. No money on that. The money was tv, VCR and camcorder. In the last few years i was by myself in the shop as the other guys got get up with the nasty bastard that owned the shop and quit. Well obviously there's something wrong but without knowing a little bit more about what is happening I couldn't begin to tell you where to start checking.any experience repair tech will tell you that we use all of our senses when examining an item. How does it look do things look like they're operating correctly, how does it sound is it making unusual sounds do motors sound like they're running at the correct speed or are they running slow or fast, does it admit any smells, does it get hot? Without knowing more it's impossible to say even where to begin looking. It's very likely if it's an old Sony from the 80s or 90s that it's got the failed fish oil capacitor syndrome. These cameras quite often will admit smell of fish because the capacitors leak their fish oil contents onto the circuit board and damage the board. Does the drum motor spin up when you first install the tape and if it does does it sound like it's going the correct speed? Some failures were caused by connectors that failed edge connectors, and when you install the tape the drum will wind up to a very high speed then it will stop and kick the tape compartment open. There are so many things that can cause a failure on a camcorder but without more information it's impossible to even try to point you in the correct direction. Keep in mind that many of these camcorders cannot be repaired because of no parts available I because circuit boards get damaged by the corrosive electrolytic that leaked out of those bad caps of the day.

    Hi there,just inquiring,if I bought a cassette deck from USA on eBay and as I live in Ireland/Europe,will the tape deck work ok without any issues? I know you’ll need a voltage converter to change the voltage from 110 to 220 to power it up but will it work properly even if I did get a voltage converter,someone told me it still won’t play. Thanks.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It depends. First you need a step down transformer. Not just a cheap voltage converter. It must be a transformer type. They do make small transformer type that plug into an outlet. You can tell by the weight. Trabaformer type are heavy. It will also typically be rated 50 or 100 watts max. If it says 1500 watts that's a triac or resistor based that reduces current for heating devices and do not reduce voltage.
      Now it also depends on what type of motor is inside. If its a dc motor no problem, if its an ac induction motor, it will run slow on 50Hz and require a pulley change or wrapping it with dental floss and glue to make the diameter larger.

      Some VCRs had a switching power supply in them that would operate between 90 and 240 V. Had you plugged in AVCR that had a conventional power transformer in it you would have found out fairly quickly that it would stop working because the transformer would overheat and pop the thermal cut out built-in to the transformer or it might just blow the winding open completely. Tick decks and amplifiers on the other hand use a conventional linear power supply with a transformer and if you plug it into 240 V you will end up with double the power on the DC side which will blow the regulators blow the motor blow probably everything else on the circuit and burn the transformer out. Sony for example on their VHS VCRs used switching power supplies which could operate on anything the Beta max machines on the other hand used a linear power supply and if you plugged them into 240 you would have found out pretty quick that you just created yourself a doorstop. Devices that have switching power supplies usually on the label will say 90-240v. If it says 120, don't plug it in without a step down transformer.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't control them. Could be higher paying ads. Google places them and they do change. If a video is popular they could place more over time. Some advertisers pay a premium to get their ad placed and not others because they know that people click away if there's too many ads so they pay a premium to get their ad shown as only one or two ads on a video as opposed to four or five because the chances of their ad being shown is much greater. If you were an advertiser would you not pay a little bit more knowing that your ad was going to be served? And I'm sure that's the way Google sells them not that I know anything about how they market but I'm pretty sure that when they're auctioning off or selling ads the sales rep would have that option to give an advertiser exclusive access to a video as opposed to a chance that there I may not be seen because someone clicks away early. But hey what do I know I'm just a content producer I upload to youtube and they pay me every month. As long as the check rolls in every month I'm happy because this believe it a job. It's my second job which believe it or not I spend almost as much time working on as my full-time job. But this one is optional I don't have to do it if I don't want to if I've got something else better to do I do it if I've got nothing else better to do and there's work sitting in the shop to be done I make a video.

      It's an alloy that was devoloped for recording heads. Better electromagnetic properties than ferrite and harder then permalloy.

    The 3kHz tone on the scope looks pretty terrible, I would expect such phase shift on a 10 kHz tone, 3 kHz is typically much more stable. Maybe the pinch roller is damaged (you can get good replacements from fixyouraudio, same shop as for walkman belts) or maybe the transport itself is not really stable. You can't expect great audio quality with such a transport.

    It's such an ugly deck, I threw it onto the electro trash, saved some parts like trafo. Got it from people who wanted get rid of where I bought historical B&W speaker boxes and Yamaha M4.

    Ok, it going a little too far, with the Chinese attacks! Just because the one before bought a wrong belt, hasn't anything to do with the quality!!

      That's as bad as here in Canada. Ordered a 3.50 part from the USA. There was a 10.00 shipping fee, so now the 3.50 part is 13.50 . I marked that part up to 20 and quoted my customer 75 for the repair. Specifically instructed the seller to only ship by USPS and not to ship by ANY other means. Lazy ass seller just shipped by Fed Ex.
      Fed Ex added 52.62 in taxes and fees that arrived 3 weeks after the part was received.
      Needless to say the customer was not too happy about paying that extra 52.62. Told him he had 2 choices, pay me and get his equipment back or not pay me and I would sell it. Told him he could take the charges up with fed ex but it was not my problem it was his.
      So that voltage regulator ended up costing 66.12 by the time it arrived. Told him I wasn't going to eat the costs because the seller didn't follow instructions. Now my policy when any parts are required is I give the client the part number and the selling dealer in the USA and tell them they can bring me the part once they have it and I will install. When they bitch about it, I tell them this story and why I won't get do it, or I add an additional 40.00 to cover any broker charges.
